The Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) toolbox OpenFOAM is used to assess the applicability of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solvers to the simulation of Oscillating Wave Surge Converters (OWSC) in significant waves. Simulation of these flap type devices requires the solution of the equations of motion and the representation of the OWSC’s motion in a moving mesh. A new way to simulate the sea floor inside a section of the moving mesh with a moving dissipation zone is presented. To assess the accuracy of the new solver, experiments are conducted in regular and irregular wave traces for a full three dimensional model. Results of acceleration and flow features are presented for numerical and experimental data. It is found that the new numerical model reproduces experimental results within the bounds of experimental accuracy.

Os parques de estacionamento cobertos estão obrigados por legislação a terem sistemas de desenfumagem. Assim, nesta dissertação desenvolve-se um procedimento computacional para a analise e verificação de funcionamento de sistemas de desenfumagem com ventiladores de impulso para parques de estacionamento, recorrendo ao software de mecânica dos fluidos computacional OpenFOAM. Actualmente nos sistemas de desenfumagem de parques de estacionamento estão a ser aplicados ventiladores de impulso. Este tipo de ventiladores não estão contemplados pela legislação em vigor. Assim, para serem utilizados é necessário verificar se estes podem substituir as redes de condutas. A verificação do funcionamento de sistemas de desenfumagem com ventiladores de impulso e efectuada com recurso a programas de simulação de mecânica dos fluidos computacional. O software OpenFOAM não tem tutoriais para ventiladores de impulso. Assim, foi executado um procedimento para validação dos ventiladores de impulso. A validação consistiu em reproduzir-se uma experiência executada por Giesen et al. (2011). Executaram-se várias simulações com diferentes modelos de turbulência, verificando-se que o programa buoyantpimplefoam do software OpenFOAM ao utilizar o modelo de turbulência k -ɛ simulou quase na perfeição os ventiladores de impulso. O desenvolvimento do procedimento computacional foi executado para um parque de estacionamento com uma geometria bastante complexa. O parque de estacionamento foi criado com um software em 3D e posteriormente inserido numa malha j a criada com as dimensões exteriores do parque. Foram estipuladas as condições de fronteira e executou-se uma simulação de seiscentos segundos com parâmetros determinados previamente. O processamento da simulação teve a duração de aproximadamente oito dias. Dos resultados obtidos concluiu-se que o procedimento computacional apresentado simula adequadamente sistemas de desenfumagem em parques de estacionamento.

Il presente lavoro si prefigge come scopo la validazione e successiva taratura dei modelli di cavitazione di Merkle e Kunz, basati sulla modellazione del trasferimento di massa, implementati nel software OpenFOAM. Lo studio riguarda la fluidodinamica computazionale. L'operazione di taratura e condotta dall'utente variando i parametri liberi dei vari modelli, con lo scopo di avvicinare il risultato computazionale a quello sperimentale.

Numerical simulations of flow surrounding a synthetic jet actuating device are presented. By modifying a dynamic mesh technique available in OpenFoam-a well-documented open-source solver for fluid dynamics, detailed computations of the sinusoidal motion of the synthetic jet diaphragm were possible. Numerical solutions were obtained by solving the two dimensional incompressible viscous N-S equations, with the use of a second order implicit time marching scheme and a central finite volume method for spatial discretization in both streamwise and crossflow directions. A systematic parametric study is reported here, in which the external Reynolds number, the diaphragm amplitude and frequency, and the slot dimensions are varied.

Le prestazioni dei motori a combustione interna sono fortemente influenzate dalla formazione di un film fluido, a seguito dell'impatto di uno spray con una parete. Nell'ottica di favorire la formazione della miscela e di ridurre le emissioni, lo studio approfondito di tale fenomeno deve essere supportato da un processo di simulazione assistita dal calcolatore. Pertanto, la Fluidodinamica Computazionale (Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD) ed i modelli ad essa associati rappresentano al giorno d'oggi uno strumento vantaggioso e sempre più utilizzato. In questo ambito si colloca il presente lavoro di tesi, che si propone di validare il modello di film fluido implementato nel software OpenFOAM-2.3.0, confrontando i risultati ottenuti, in termini di altezza del film fluido, con quelli del caso sperimentale di Le Coz et al.

Confined supersonic mixing layer is explored through model-free simulations. Both two- and three-dimensional spatio-temporal simulations were carried out employing higher order finite difference scheme as well as finite volume scheme based on open source software (OpenFOAM) to understand the effect of three-dimensionality on the development of mixing layer. It is observed that although the instantaneous structures exhibit three-dimensional features, the average pressure and velocities are predominantly two-dimensional. The computed wall pressures match well with experimental results fairly well, although three-dimensional simulation underpredicts the wall pressure in the downstream direction. The self-similarity of the velocity profiles is obtained within the duct length for all the simulations. Although the mixing layer thicknesses differ among different simulations, their growth rate is nearly the same. Significant differences are observed for species and temperature distribution between two- and three-dimensional calculations, and two-dimensional calculations do not match the experimental observation of smooth variations in species mass fraction profiles as reported in literature. Reynolds stress distribution for three-dimensional calculations show profiles with less peak values compared to two-dimensional calculations; while normal stress anisotropy is higher for three-dimensional case.

In this paper we present a massively parallel open source solver for Richards equation, named the RichardsFOAM solver. This solver has been developed in the framework of the open source generalist computational fluid dynamics tool box OpenFOAM (R) and is capable to deal with large scale problems in both space and time. The source code for RichardsFOAM may be downloaded from the CPC program library website. It exhibits good parallel performances (up to similar to 90% parallel efficiency with 1024 processors both in strong and weak scaling), and the conditions required for obtaining such performances are analysed and discussed. These performances enable the mechanistic modelling of water fluxes at the scale of experimental watersheds (up to few square kilometres of surface area), and on time scales of decades to a century. Such a solver can be useful in various applications, such as environmental engineering for long term transport of pollutants in soils, water engineering for assessing the impact of land settlement on water resources, or in the study of weathering processes on the watersheds. An important first step in spray combustion simulation is an accurate determination of the fuel properties which affects the modelling of spray formation and reaction. In a practical combustion simulation, the implementation of a multicomponent model is important in capturing the relative volatility of different fuel components. A Discrete Multicomponent (DM) model is deemed to be an appropriate candidate to model a composite fuel like biodiesel which consists of four components of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). In this paper, the DM model is compared with the traditional Continuous Thermodynamics (CTM) model for both diesel and biodiesel. The CTM model is formulated based on mixing rules that incorporate the physical and thermophysical properties of pure components into a single continuous surrogate for the composite fuel. The models are implemented within the open-source CFD code OpenFOAM, and a semi-quantitative comparison is made between the predicted spray-combustion characteristics and optical measurements of a swirl-stabilised flame of diesel and biodiesel. The DM model performs better than the CTM model in predicting a higher magnitude of heat release rate in the top flame brush region of the biodiesel flame compared to that of the diesel flame. Using both the DM and CTM models, the simulation successfully reproduces the droplet size, volume flux, and droplet density profiles of diesel and biodiesel. The DM model predicts a longer spray penetration length for biodiesel compared to that of diesel, as seen in the experimental data. Also, the DM model reproduces a segregated biodiesel fuel vapour field and spray in which the most abundant FAME component has the longest vapour penetration. In the biodiesel flame, the relative abundance of each fuel component is found to dominate over the relative volatility in terms of the vapour species distribution and vice versa in the liquid species distribution. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Simulations of the global atmosphere for weather and climate forecasting require fast and accurate solutions and so operational models use high-order finite differences on regular structured grids. This precludes the use of local refinement; techniques allowing local refinement are either expensive (eg. high-order finite element techniques) or have reduced accuracy at changes in resolution (eg. unstructured finite-volume with linear differencing). We present solutions of the shallow-water equations for westerly flow over a mid-latitude mountain from a finite-volume model written using OpenFOAM. A second/third-order accurate differencing scheme is applied on arbitrarily unstructured meshes made up of various shapes and refinement patterns. The results are as accurate as equivalent resolution spectral methods. Using lower order differencing reduces accuracy at a refinement pattern which allows errors from refinement of the mountain to accumulate and reduces the global accuracy over a 15 day simulation. We have therefore introduced a scheme which fits a 2D cubic polynomial approximately on a stencil around each cell. Using this scheme means that refinement of the mountain improves the accuracy after a 15 day simulation. This is a more severe test of local mesh refinement for global simulations than has been presented but a realistic test if these techniques are to be used operationally. These efficient, high-order schemes may make it possible for local mesh refinement to be used by weather and climate forecast models.

A three-dimensional time-dependent hydrodynamic and heat transport model of Lake Binaba, a shallow and small dam reservoir in Ghana, emphasizing the simulation of dynamics and thermal structure has been developed. Most numerical studies of temperature dynamics in reservoirs are based on one- or two-dimensional models. These models are not applicable for reservoirs characterized with complex flow pattern and unsteady heat exchange between the atmosphere and water surface. Continuity, momentum and temperature transport equations have been solved. Proper assignment of boundary conditions, especially surface heat fluxes, has been found crucial in simulating the lake’s hydrothermal dynamics. This model is based on the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes equations, using a Boussinesq approach, with a standard k − ε turbulence closure to solve the flow field. The thermal model includes a heat source term, which takes into account the short wave radiation and also heat convection at the free surface, which is function of air temperatures, wind velocity and stability conditions of atmospheric boundary layer over the water surface. The governing equations of the model have been solved by OpenFOAM; an open source, freely available CFD toolbox. As its core, OpenFOAM has a set of efficient C++ modules that are used to build solvers. It uses collocated, polyhedral numerics that can be applied on unstructured meshes and can be easily extended to run in parallel. A new solver has been developed to solve the hydrothermal model of lake. The simulated temperature was compared against a 15 days field data set. Simulated and measured temperature profiles in the probe locations show reasonable agreement. The model might be able to compute total heat storage of water bodies to estimate evaporation from water surface.
