Selective oxidation reactions are challenging when carried out on an industrial scale. Many traditional methods are undesirable from an environmental or safety point of view. There is a need to develop sustainable catalytic approaches that use molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant. This review will discuss the use of stable radicals (primarily nitroxyl radicals) in aerobic oxidation catalysis. We will discuss the important advances that have occurred in recent years, highlighting the catalytic performance, mechanistic insights and the expanding synthetic utility of these catalytic systems.

This thesis work has been carried out during the Erasmus exchange period at the “Université Paris 6 – Pierre et Marie Curie”, in the “Edifices PolyMétalliques – EPOM” team, leaded by Prof. Anna Proust, belonging to the “Institut Parisien de Chimie Moléculaire”, under the supervision of Dr. Guillaume Izzet and Dr. Geoffroy Guillemot. The redox properties of functionalized Keggin and Dawson POMs have been exploited in photochemical, catalytic and reactivity tests. For the photochemical purposes, the selected POMs have been functionalized with different photoactive FGs, and the resulting products have been characterized by CV analyses, luminescence tests and UV-Vis analyses. In future, these materials will be tested for hydrogen photoproduction and polymerization of photoactive films. For the catalytic purposes, POMs have been firstly functionalized with silanol moieties, to obtain original coordination sites, and then post-functionalized with TMs such as V, Ti and Zr in their highest oxidation states. In this way, the catalytic properties of TMs were coupled to the redox properties of POM frameworks. The redox behavior of some of these hybrids has been studied by spectro-electrochemical and EPR methods. Catalytic epoxidation tests have been carried out on allylic alcohols and n-olefins, employing different catalysts and variable amounts of them. The performances of POM-V hybrids have been compared to those of VO(iPrO)3. Finally, reactivity of POM-VIII hybrids has been studied, using styrene oxide and ethyl-2-diazoacetate as substrates. All the obtained products have been analyzed via NMR techniques. Cyclovoltammetric analyses have been carried out in order to determine the redox behavior of selected hybrids.

One of the key hindrances on development of solid catalysts containing cobalt species for partial oxidation of organic molecules at mild conditions in conventional liquid phase is the severe metal leaching. The leached soluble Co species with a higher degree of freedom always out-performs those of solid supported Co species in oxidation catalysis. However, the homogeneous Co species concomitantly introduces separation problems. We have recently reponed for the first time, a new oxidation catalyst system for the oxidation of organic molecules in supercritical CO2 using the principle of micellar catalysis. [CF3(CF2)(8)COO](2)Co.xH(2)O (the fluorinated anionic moiety forms aqueous reverse micelles carrying water-soluble Co2+ cations in scCO(2)) was previously shown to be extremely active for the oxidation of toluene in the presence of sodium bromide in water-CO2 mixture, giving 98% conversion and 99% selectivity to benzoic acid at 120 degreesC. In this study, we show that the effects of varying the type of surfactant counterions and the length of the surfactant chains on catalysis. It is found that the use of [CF3(CF2)(8)COO](2)Mg.yH(2)O/Co(II) acetate is as effective as the [CF3(CF2)(8)COO](2)Co.xH(2)O and the fluorinated chain length used has a subtle effect on the catalytic rate measured. It is also demonstrated that this new type of micellar catalyst in scCO(2) can be easily separated via CO2 depressurisation and be reused without noticeable deactivation. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Late-transition-metal-doped Pt clusters are prevalent in CO oxidation catalysis, as they exhibit better catalytic activity than pure Pt, while reducing the effective cost and poisoning However, completely eliminating the critical problem of Pt poisoning still poses a big challenge. Here, we report for the first time that, among the bimetallic clusters ((Pt3M where M = Co, Ni, and Cu)/MgO(100)), the CO adsorption site inverts for Pt3Co/MgO(100) from Pt to Co, due to the complete uptake of Pt d-states by lattice oxygen. While this resolves the problem of Pt poisoning, good reaction kinetics are predicted through low barriers for Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars van Krevelen (MvK) mechanisms of CO oxidation for Pt3Co/MgO(100) and Li-doped MgO(100), respectively. Li doping in MgO(100) compensates for the charge imbalance caused by a spontaneous oxygen vacancy formation. Pt-3 Co/Li-doped MgO(100) stands out as an exceptional CO oxidation catalyst, giving an MvK reaction barrier as low as 0.11 eV. We thereby propose a novel design strategy of d-band center inversion for CO oxidation catalysts with no Pt poisoning and excellent reaction kinetics.

Since the discovery of a series of Au-based catalysts by Haruta et al. considerable progress has been made in understanding the active role of Au in CO oxidation catalysis. This review provides a summary of recent theoretical work performed in this field; in particular it addresses DFT studies of CO oxidation catalysis over free and supported gold nanoparticles. Several properties of the Au particles have been found to contribute to their unique catalytic activity. Of these properties, the low-coordination state of the Au atoms is arguably the most pertinent, although other properties of the Au cluster atoms, such as electronic charge, cannot be ignored. The current consensuses regarding the mechanism for CO oxidation over Au-based catalysts is also discussed. Finally, water-enhanced catalysis of CO oxidation on Au clusters is summarized.

A Cu(I)/9-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-3-one N-oxyl (ketoABNO) aerobic catalyst system is highly effective for the oxidation of secondary alcohols, including unactivated aliphatic substrates. The effects of pressure and gas composition on catalyst performance are examined. The radical can be employed at low loadings and is also amenable to immobilisation on to solid supports.

N,O-ligated Pd(II) complexes show considerable promise for the oxidation of challenging secondary aliphatic alcohols. The crystal structures of the highly active complexes containing the 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid (HCA) and 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-sulfonic acid (HSA) ligands have been obtained. The (HSA)Pd(OAc)2 system can effectively oxidise a range of secondary alcohols, including unactivated alcohols, within 4–6 h using loadings of 0.5 mol%, while lower loadings (0.2 mol%) can be employed with extended reaction times. The influence of reaction conditions on catalyst degradation was also examined in these studies.

The [Ru(3)O(H(3)CCO(2))(6)(py)(2)(L)]PF(6) clusters, where L=methanol or dimethyl sulfoxide, can be activated by peroxide or oxygen donor species, such as tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) or iodosylbenzene (PhIO), respectively, generating reactive intermediates of the type [Ru(3)(IV,IV,III)=0](+). In this way, they catalyse the oxidation of cyclohexane or cyclohexene by TBHP and PhIO, via oxygen atom transfer, rather than by the alternative oxygen radical mechanism characteristic of this type of complexes. In addition to their ability to perform efficient olefin epoxydation catalysis, these clusters also promote the cleavage of the C-H bond in hydrocarbons, resembling the oxidation catalysis by metal porphyrins. Ultrathin alumina monolayers grafted onto an ordered mesoporous SBA-15 silica framework afford a composite catalyst support with unique structural properties and surface chemistry. Palladium nanoparticles deposited onto Al-SBA-15 via wet impregnation exhibit the high dispersion and surface oxidation characteristic of pure aluminas, in conjunction with the high active site densities characteristic of thermally stable, high-area mesoporous silicas. This combination confers significant rate enhancements in the aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of cinnamyl alcohol over Pd/Al-SBA-15 compared to mesoporous alumina or silica supports. Operando, liquid-phase XAS highlights the interplay between dissolved oxygen and the oxidation state of palladium nanoparticles dispersed over Al-SBA-15 towards on-stream reduction: ambient pressures of flowing oxygen are sufficient to hinder palladium oxide reduction to metal, enabling a high selox activity to be maintained, whereas rapid PdO reduction and concomitant catalyst deactivation occurs under static oxygen. Selectivity to the desired cinnamaldehyde product mirrors these trends in activity, with flowing oxygen minimising CO cleavage of the cinnamyl alcohol reactant to trans-β-methylstyrene, and of cinnamaldehyde decarbonylation to styrene. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Zeolite Y-encapsulated ruthenium(III) complexes of Schiff bases derived from 3-hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde and 1,2- phenylenediamine, 2-aminophenol, or 2-aminobenzimidazole (RuYqpd, RuYqap and RuYqab, respectively) and the Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehyde and 1,2-phenylenediamine, 2-aminophenol, or 2-aminobenzimidazole (RuYsalpd, RuYsalap and RuYsalab, respectively) have been prepared and characterized. These complexes, except RuYqpd, catalyze catechol oxidation by H2O2 selectively to 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene. RuYqpd is inactive. A comparative study of the initial rates and percentage conversion of the reaction was done in all cases. Turn over frequency of the catalysts was also calculated. The catalytic activity of the complexes is in the order RuYqap > RuYqab for quinoxaline-based complexes and RuYsalap > RuYsalpd > RuYsalab for salicylidene-based complexes. The reaction is believed to proceed through the formation of a Ru(V) species.

The yeast 20S proteasome is subject to sulfhydryl redox alterations, such as the oxidation of cysteine residues (Cys-SH) into cysteine sulfenic acid (Cys-SOH), followed by S-glutathionylation (Cys-S-SG). Proteasome S-glutathionylation promotes partial loss of chymotrypsin-like activity and post-acidic cleavage without alteration of the trypsin-like proteasomal activity. Here we show that the 20S proteasome purified from stationary-phase cells was natively S-glutathionylated. Moreover, recombinant glutaredoxin 2 removes glutathione from natively or in vitro S-glutathionylated 20S proteasome, allowing the recovery of chymotrypsin-like activity and post-acidic cleavage. Glutaredoxin 2 deglutathionylase activity was dependent on its entry into the core particle, as demonstrated by stimulating S-glutathionylated proteasome opening. Under these conditions, deglutathionylation of the 20S proteasome and glutaredoxin 2 degradation were increased when compared to non-stimulated samples. Glutaredoxin 2 fragmentation by the 20S proteasome was evaluated by SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry, and S-glutathionylation was evaluated by either western blot analyses with anti-glutathione IgG or by spectrophotometry with the thiol reactant 7-chloro-4-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole. It was also observed in vivo that glutaredoxin 2 was ubiquitinated in cellular extracts of yeast cells grown in glucose-containing medium. Other cytoplasmic oxido-reductases, namely thioredoxins 1 and 2, were also active in 20S proteasome deglutathionylation by a similar mechanism. These results indicate for the first time that 20S proteasome cysteinyl redox modification is a regulated mechanism coupled to enzymatic deglutathionylase activity.
