The binuclear complex [NBu4n](4)[Cr-2(ox)(5)]. 2CHCl(3) has been prepared by an ion-exchange procedure employing Dowex 50WX2 cation-exchange resin in the n-butylammonium form and potassium tris(oxalato)chromate(III). The dimeric complex was characterised by a crystal structure determination: monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 29.241(7), b = 15.192(2), c = 22.026(5) Angstrom, beta = 94.07(1)degrees, Z = 4. The magnetic susceptibility (300-4.2 K) indicated that the chromium(III) sites were antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.1 cm(-1)).

Reaction of K-3[Cr(ox)(3)] (ox = oxalate) with nickel(II) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) in aqueous solution resulted in isolation of the bimetallic assembly [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O. The polymeric complex {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) has been prepared by reaction of nickel(II) perchlorate and tren in aqueous solution. From the same reaction mixture the complex [Ni-2(tren)(2)(aepd)][ClO4](4). 2H(2)O (aepd = N-(2-aminoethyl)pyrrolidine-3,4-diamine), in which a bridging tren ligand contains a carbon-carbon bond between two arms forming a substituted pyrrolidine, has been isolated. The complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic susceptibility (300-4.2 K) and magnetization data (2, 4 K, H = 0-5 T) for {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) (300 K , 4.23 mu(B)) exhibit evidence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling and zero field splitting (2J = -1.8 cm(-1); \ D\ = 2 cm(-1)) at low temperature. For [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O the susceptibility data at 300 K are indicative of uncoupled nickel(II) and chromium(III) sites with zero-field splitting and intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling predicted at low temperature.

Oxidative low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) is a key risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis, and it can stimulate the expression of a variety of inflammatory signals. As a new and highly sensitive inflammation index, OX40L may be a key to understanding the mechanisms that regulate interactions between cells within the vessel wall and inflammatory mediators during the development of atherosclerosis. To investigate whether Ox-LDL regulates OX40L expression through an oxidized LDL-1 receptor (LOX-1)-mediated mechanism, we investigated the effect of different concentrations of Ox-LDL (50, 100, 150 µg/mL) on endothelial cell proliferation and apoptosis. Stimulation with Ox-LDL increased OX40L protein 1.44-fold and mRNA 4.0-fold in endothelial cells, and these effects were inhibited by blocking LOX-1. These results indicate that LOX-1 plays an important role in the chronic inflammatory process in blood vessel walls. Inhibiting LOX-1 may reduce blood vessel inflammation and provide a therapeutic option to limit atherosclerosis progression.

We have used high energy transfer (HET) inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy to measure the vibrational modes in the spectra of hydroxyapatite, bone and brushite to confirm our earlier work that only a fraction of the hydroxyl groups in bone mineral are substituted. The HET spectra are better observed due to the higher scattering cross section of hydrogen compared with the other elements in the calcium phosphate compounds. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Recent studies of Michael Oakeshott have stressed the mutually constitutive importance of Hobbes to Oakeshott, arguing in part that Oakeshott’s Hobbes largely reflected his own concerns and broader philosophical project. This paper does not dispute this, but proposes a complementary account: Oakeshott’s interpretation of Hobbes was also formed in large measure by both his sympathy for Leo Strauss’s account and by his perception of it as the principal rival to his own. To demonstrate the existence of such a formative engagement, a close reading of Oakeshott’s essay The moral life in the writings of Thomas Hobbes is undertaken. Not only is Oakeshott found to have absorbed much of Strauss’s interpretation (surprisingly including Strauss’s distinction between esoteric and exoteric doctrines), the key impetus of the essay is shown to be a refutation of Strauss’s characterization of Hobbes as a ‘moralist of the common good’.

The performance and emissions behavior of a Rover 1S/60 turboshaft engine when operated with several blends of aviation kerosene and ox tallow ethyl-ester are shown in this article. The tests were performed with a compressor shaft coupled to an hydraulic dynamometer where data of power and mass fuel flow were collected to determine the brake specific fuel consumption. A flue gas analyzer was positioned at the exhaust duct to collect oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxides. An increase in the specific fuel consumption was observed due to the lesser lower heating value of the most oxygenated blends. However, reductions of CO, CO2 and NO (x) have been observed and no-significant ill effects have occurred in the turbine operation.

Luminescence and energy transfer in [Zn1-xRux(bpy)3][NaAl1-yCry(ox)3] (x ≈ 0.01, y = 0.006 − 0.22; bpy = 2,2‘-bipyridine, ox = C2O42-) and [Zn1-x-yRuxOsy(bpy)3][NaAl(ox)3] (x ≈ 0.01, y = 0.012) are presented and discussed. Surprisingly, the luminescence of the isolated luminophores [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and [Os(bpy)3]2+ in [Zn(bpy)3][NaAl(ox)3] is hardly quenched at room temperature. Steady-state luminescence spectra and decay curves show that energy transfer occurs between [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and [Cr(ox)3]3- and between [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and [Os(bpy)3]2+ in [Zn1-xRux(bpy)3][NaAl1-yCry(ox)3] and [Zn1-x-yRuxOsy(bpy)3] [NaAl(ox)3], respectively. For a quantitative investigation of the energy transfer, a shell type model is developed, using a Monte Carlo procedure and the structural parameters of the systems. A good description of the experimental data is obtained assuming electric dipole−electric dipole interaction between donors and acceptors, with a critical distance Rc for [Ru(bpy)3]2+ to [Cr(ox)3]3- energy transfer of 15 Å and for [Ru(bpy)3]2+ to [Os(bpy)3]2+ energy transfer of 33 Å. These values are in good agreement with those derived using the Förster−Dexter theory.
