This paper discusses identification of parameters of generalized ordered weighted averaging (GOWA) operators from empirical data. Similarly to ordinary OWA operators, GOWA are characterized by a vector of weights, as well as the power to which the arguments are raised. We develop optimization techniques which allow one to fit such operators to the observed data. We also generalize these methods for functional defined GOWA and generalized Choquet integral based aggregation operators.

This paper investigates the problem of obtaining the weights of the ordered weighted aggregation (OWA) operators from observations. The problem is formulated as a restricted least squares and uniform approximation problems. We take full advantage of the linearity of the problem. In the former case, a well known technique of non-negative least squares is used. In a case of uniform approximation, we employ a recently developed cutting angle method of global optimisation. Both presented methods give results superior to earlier approaches, and do not require complicated nonlinear constructions. Additional restrictions, such as degree of orness of the operator, can be easily introduced

The OWA operators gained interest among researchers as they provide a continuum of aggregation operators able to cover the whole range of compensation between the minimum and the maximum. In some circumstances, it is useful to consider a wider range of values, extending below the minimum and over the maximum. ST-OWA are able to surpass the boundaries of variation of ordinary compensatory operators. Their application requires identification of the weighting vector, the t-norm, and the t-conorm. This task can be accomplished by considering both the desired analytical properties and empirical data.

We consider the use of Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) in linear regression. Our goal is to replace the traditional least squares, least absolute deviation, and maximum likelihood criteria with an OWA function of the residuals. We obtain several high breakdown robust regression methods as special cases (least median, least trimmed squares, trimmed likelihood methods). We also present new formulations of regression problem. OWA-based regression is particularly useful in the presence of outliers.

We consider an application of fuzzy logic connectives to statistical regression. We replace the standard least squares, least absolute deviation, and maximum likelihood criteria with an ordered weighted averaging (OWA) function of the residuals. Depending on the choice of the weights, we obtain the standard regression problems, high-breakdown robust methods (least median, least trimmed squares, and trimmed likelihood methods), as well as new formulations. We present various approaches to numerical solution of such regression problems. OWA-based regression is particularly useful in the presence of outliers, and we illustrate the performance of the new methods on several instances of linear regression problems with multiple outliers.

The ordered weighted averaging (OWA) determination method with stress function was proposed by Yager, and it makes the OWA operator elements scatter in the shape of the stress function. In this paper, we extend the OWA determination with the stress function method using an optimization model. The proposed method transforms the OWA optimal solution elements into the interpolation points of the stress function. The proposed method extends the basic form of the stress function method with both scale and vertical shift transformations. We also explore a number of properties of this optimization-based stress function method. The OWA operator optimal solution elements can distribute as the shape of the given stress function in a parameterized way, in which case, the solution always possesses the arithmetic average operator as a special case.

This paper contributes to extend the minimax disparity to determine the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) model based on linear programming. It introduces the minimax disparity approach between any distinct pairs of the weights and uses the duality of linear programming to prove the feasibility of the extended OWA operator weights model. The paper finishes with an open problem. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In practical term any result obtained using an ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator heavily depends upon the method to determine the weighting vector. Several approaches for obtaining the associated weights have been suggested in the literature, in which none of them took into account the preference of alternatives. This paper presents a method for determining the OWA weights when the preferences of alternatives across all the criteria are considered. An example is given to illustrate this method and an application in internet search engine shows the use of this new OWA operator.

The concept of ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator weights arises in uncertain decision making problems, however some weights may have a specific relationship with other. This information about the weights can be obtained from decision makers (DMs). This paper intends to introduce a theory of weight restrictions into the existing OWA operator weight models. Based on the DMs' value judgment the obtained OWA operator weights could be more realistic.

This paper explores the use of the optimization procedures in SAS/OR software with application to the ordered weight averaging (OWA) operators of decision-making units (DMUs). OWA was originally introduced by Yager (IEEE Trans Syst Man Cybern 18(1):183-190, 1988) has gained much interest among researchers, hence many applications such as in the areas of decision making, expert systems, data mining, approximate reasoning, fuzzy system and control have been proposed. On the other hand, the SAS is powerful software and it is capable of running various optimization tools such as linear and non-linear programming with all type of constraints. To facilitate the use of OWA operator by SAS users, a code was implemented. The SAS macro developed in this paper selects the criteria and alternatives from a SAS dataset and calculates a set of OWA weights. An example is given to illustrate the features of SAS/OWA software. © Springer-Verlag 2009.

Determining the Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operator weights is important in decision making applications. Several approaches have been proposed in the literature to obtain the associated weights. This paper provides an alternative disparity model to identify the OWA operator weights. The proposed mathematical model extends the existing disparity approaches by minimizing the sum of the deviation between two distinct OWA weights. The proposed disparity model can be used for a preference ranking aggregation. A numerical example in preference ranking and an application in search engines prove the usefulness of the generated OWA weights.

In this paper, we propose a new similarity measure to compute the pair-wise similarity of text-based documents based on patterns of the words in the documents. First we develop a kappa measure for pair-wise comparison of documents then we use ordered weighting averaging operator to define a document similarity measure for a set of documents.
