This chapter draws from an Australian semi-structured interview project with seventy-eight culturally, sexually and geographically diverse women, aged nineteen to sixty-five, who were in monogamous, open and polyamorous marital and de facto relationships with bisexual men, abbreviated as MOREs (mixed-orientation relationships).
For the purposes of this chapter, I will provide an overview of the shifting subjectivities, agency and resistance of those women and their male partners who stated that, without coercion or repression, they undertook processes of ‘designing’ their long-term MOREs.
I wiIl explore what every woman stated as being an essential component of consensually and creatively entering or being in a relationship with a bisexual man: designing, negotiating and maintaining some “ground rules” and “boundaries”.
There appear to be three overall groups of ‘rules’ within which specific ‘designs’ are created:
1. ‘Old Rules’: Monogamy is considered the only workable or desirable rule, and a partner’s inability to adhere to monogamy would mean the end of the relationship.
2. ‘New Rules’: A range of negotiations and design-specifications establish non-monogamous boundaries and operational strategies.
3. ‘Our Rules or His and Her Rules’: Decisions are made regarding to what extent the rules will be equitable to both, or there are separate regulations for each partner.

The edge-to-edge matching model has been further developed along with the Cu/Cr system as an example. The conditions for zigzag atom rows to be matching directions are included and the critical value of interatomic spacing misfit along matching directions and the critical value of d-value mismatch between matching planes are proposed in the new version of the model. Cubic GaN/GaAs(0 0 1) epilayers and hexagonal inclusions are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The X-ray {0 0 0 2} and (1 0 (1) over bar 0) pole figures show that the orientation relationships between cubic GaN and hexagonal inclusions are (1 1 1)//(0 0 0 1), <1 1 2 >//<1 0 (1) over bar 0 >. The distribution of hexagonal inclusions mainly results from the interfacial bonding disorder in the grain boundaries parallel to hexagonal <0 0 0 1 > directions and the lattice mismatch in <0 0 0 1 > directions on {1 0 (1) over bar 0} planes. In order to reduce the energy increase in cubic epilayers, hexagonal lamellas with smaller sizes in <0 0 0 1 > directions often nucleate inside the buffer layer or near the interface between the buffer layer and the epitaxial layer, and penetrate through the whole epitaxial layer with this orientation relationship. In this work, some of our recent results in microstructure, texture and orientation relationship resulting from the application of an external high magnetic field during diffusional and non-diffusional phase transformation in both steel and functional metallic materials have been summarized. A 12-T magnetic field was applied to the diffusional decomposition of austenite in 0.81C-Fe alloy and martensitic transformation of a Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloy. For the 0.81C-Fe alloy, it was found that the magnetic field induces the formation of proeutectoid ferrite and slightly enhances the <001> fiber component in ferrite in the transverse field direction. The magnetic dipolar interaction between Fe atoms in the transverse field direction accounts for this phenomenon. The magnetic field favors the formation of pearlite with Pitsch-Petch 2 (P-P 2) and Isaichev (IS) orientation relationships (OR) between the lamellar ferrite and cementite. For the Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloy, the magnetic field makes the martensite lamellas to grow in some specific directions with their c-axes [001] orientated to the field direction and transverse field direction.

A new approach is presented for calculating the parent orientation from sets of variants of orientations produced by phase transformation. The parent austenite orientation is determined using the orientations of bainite variants that transformed from a single parent austenite grain. In this approach, the five known orientation relationships are used to back transform each observed bainite variant to all their potential face-centered-cubic (f.c.c.) parent orientations. A set of potential f.c.c. orientations has one representative from each bainite variant, and each set is assembled on the basis of minimum mutual misorientation. The set of back-transformed orientations with the minimum summation of mutual misorientation angle (SMMA) is selected as the most probable parent (austenite) orientation. The availability of multiple sets permits a confidence index to be calculated from the best and next best fits to a parent orientation. The results show good agreement between the measured parent austenite orientation and the calculated parent orientation having minimum SMMA.

High-quality epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films were achieved by a modified off-axis sputtering technique with high deposition rates (3.3 nm/min). The film quality and the deposition rate depended crucially on the target-to-substrate separation. Epitaxial YBCO/NdGaO3(NGO)/YBCO trilayers were successfully grown onto SrTiO3, Y-ZrO2, and LaAlO3 substrates by dc and rf sputtering. The epitaxial relations were found to be [001] YBCO//[001]NGO, [100]YBCO, or [010] YBCO//[110]NGO and [001]YBCO//[110] NGO, [100]YBCO, or [010]YBCO//[001] NGO, where the latter orientation relationship was dominating. Subsequent top YBCO layers grew c axis oriented independently of the two epitaxial orientations of the NGO. The orientation relationships between YBCO and NGO were the same. Auger electron depth profiles and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the interdiffusion at the interface between the YBCO and NGO layers was not strong even at 740°C. The superconducting transition temperatures of the top and bottom YBCO layers were about the same as that of YBCO single layers, i.e., 87-90 K. Scanning electron microscopy of the surface morphologies of the YBCO and the NGO showed that a smaller substrate-target distance resulted in smoother films.

We report the formation of a primitive icosahedral quasicrystal with increased stability in Al Mn-Be alloys close to the compound Al15Mn13Be2, by melt spinning and injection casting. The crystal structure of this compound was unknown. We show that in as-cast as well as heat treated condition the intermetallic phase H1 has a hexagonal structure with lattice parameters a = 1.2295 run and c = 2.4634 nm. The space group is P6(3)/mmc In the injection-cast samples, the quasicrystal coexists with another closely related hexagonal phase H2 with a = 1.2295 nm and c = 1.2317 nm with a possible space group of P6/mmm. This phase exhibits specific orientation relationships with the icosahedral quasicrystal given by [0001](hex)//2f(QC) and [01 (1) over bar0](hex)//5f(QC) where 2f(QC) and 5f(QC) represent twofold and fivefold axes respectively. Electron diffraction patterns from both phases exhibit a close resemblance to the quasicrystalline phase. It is shown that the H1 phase is closely related to mu-Al4Mn with the same e parameter while the a parameter is reduced by tau. Following Kreiner and Franzen, it is postulated that both structures (H1 and H2) can be understood by a simple hexagonal packing of I13 clusters.

Epitaxial wurtzite InN thin films have been grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on (1 1 1) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. Interestingly, twin domain epitaxy induced by the surface reconstruction of STO is observed with the in-plane orientation relationships of [(1) over bar 1 0 0]InN parallel to [<(1)over bar > 1 0]STO and [2 <(1 1)over bar > 0]InN parallel to[<(1)over bar > 1 0]STO, which is helpful to release the strain. The InN films on STO substrates exhibit a strong photoluminescence emission around 0.78 eV. Particularly, using STO substrates opens up a possibility to integrate InN with the functional oxides. A refined version of the edge-to-edge matching model is described here. In the original model, the matching directions were obtained from the planes with all the atomic centers that were exactly in the plane, or the distance from the atomic center to the plane which was less than the atomic radius. The direction-matching pairs were the match of straight rows-straight rows and zigzag rows-zigzag rows. In the refined model, the matching directions were obtained from the planes with all the atomic centers that were exactly in the plane.

In the present work, the edge-to-edge matching model has been introduced to predict the orientation relationships (OR) between the MgZn2 phase which has hexagonal close packed (HCP) structure and the HCP a-Mg matrix. Based on the crystal structures and lattice parameters only, the model has predicted the two most preferred ORs and they are: (1) [1 1 2 3](alpha-Mg) vertical bar vertical bar]1 1 2 3](alpha-Mg), (0 0 0 1)(alpha-Mg) 0.27 degrees from (0 0 0 1)(MgZn2), (1 0 1 1)(alpha-Mg) 26.18 degrees from (1 1 2 2)(MgZn2), (2) [1 0 1 0](alpha-Mg),vertical bar vertical bar[1 1 2 0](MgZn2), (0 0 0 1)(alpha-Mg) vertical bar vertical bar(0 0 0 1)(MgZn2), (1 0 1 1)(alpha-Mg) 3.28 degrees from ( 1 1 2 2)(MgZn2). Four experimental ORs have been reported in the alpha-Mg/MgZn2 system, and the most frequently reported one is ideally the OR (2). The other three experimental ORs are near versions of the OR (2). The habit plane of the OR (2) has been predicted and it agrees well with the experimental results.

In order to study the oriented (epitaxial) crystallization of thermoplastic polymers on oriented polymer substrates, generally the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used. With this instrument, the crystallized material can easily be resolved and orientation relationships can be monitored by electron diffraction. Disadvantages are the time consuming sample preparations and difficulties in the in-situ observations of the crystallization events, because of the radiation sensitivity of the polymer crystals. It is demonstrated that these disadvantages of the TEM can be eleminated by the use of different methods of light optical contrasts under specific preparation conditions of the samples and that the optical microscopy being a supplementary method to the TEM for investigations of epitaxial crystallization.

The data is from an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) study of the microstructure of high carbon ‘Wootz’ steel. The objective of the study is to infer an unknown thermomechanical history from observation and analysis of the final microstructure in various ancient artefacts (swords and tools), and then compare the findings with heat treatments of the ancient artefacts and modern attempts at duplication of the structure. Electron backscatter data reveals the orientation relationships between various phases in the material, particularly cementite and ferrite.

The martensitic transformation crystallography in two Ni 53Mn25Ga22 (at. %) ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) was investigated by means of misorientation calculation and pole figure analysis based on the orientation of the martensitic lamellae obtained from electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) measurements. In the alloy that was first annealed at 1073K for 4h, and then cooled to 473K at ~4K/min and held for 30min, followed by cooling to room temperature at ~10K/min, there are only two kinds of differently orientated martensitic lamellae with a misorientation angle of ~82° distributed alternatively in each initial austenite grain. There is a compound twinning orientation relationship between the two lamellae. The prevalent orientation relationship between austenite and martensite is Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) relationship with (111)A//(10I)M, [1-10]a//[11-1]m. In the alloy that was annealed at 1173K for 4h followed by furnace cooling, nanoscale twins inside the martensitic lamellae were observed and the orientation relationships both between the nanotwins within one lamella and between the nanotwins in two neighboring lamellae were determined. The results presented in this paper will enrich the crystallographic data of the FSMAs and offer useful information for the development of novel FSMAs with optimal performances.
