Fonthill Literary Journal, Fonthill Grammar School Lyceum, n.d.

The Fonthill Grammar School was established in 1856. The school closed in 1876 when it failed to receive community support for a new building. The editors of the journal were two individuals with the last names Ray, and Wiggins, unfortunately their first names are not included in any of the submissions to the journal.

Se comenta la visita realizada, e1 1 de diciembre de 2008, al IES Selgas de Cudillero por el profesor Hans Smit del centro Hofstad Lyceum de La Haya. Se exponen las características de este centro holandés, que participa en un proyecto Comenius con el centro asturiano, y se muestran las primeras impresiones y los temas que en el futuro se desarrollarán tras el inicio en este curso del trabajo colaborativo entre ambos centros.

Comparison of the antidiabetic activity of Berberis lyceum root extract and berberine in alloxan-induced diabetic rats

Berberine has been shown to have hypoglycaemic activity in several in vitro and in vivo models, although the mechanism of action is not fully known. Berberis lyceum Royle root produces high concentrations of berberine, and in traditional medicine, the whole extract of this plant is used widely to treat diabetes. The antidiabetic activity of the ethanol root extract of Berberis lyceum was compared with pure berberine in normal and alloxan-diabetic rats using similar doses of each. The concentration of berberine in the extract was determined to be 80% dry weight with only trace amounts of other alkaloids present. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of berberine and a whole extract of Berberis lyceum on blood glucose and other parameters associated with diabetes, to compare the effects of the crude extract with those of pure berberine and thus validate its use as a therapeutic agent, and finally to identify any contribution of the other components of the extract to these effects. Oral administration of 50 mg/kg of Berberis extract and berberine to normal and experimental diabetic rats produced a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in blood glucose levels from days 3-7 days of treatment. Significant effects were also observed on the glucose tolerance, glycosylated haemoglobin, serum lipid profiles and body weight of experimental animals. Berberis extract and berberine demonstrated similar effects on all parameters measured, and although the extract was comparable in efficacy to berberine, it did not produce any effects additional to those shown by pure berberine. The results support the use of the extract in traditional medicine, and demonstrate that apart from being a highly cost-effective means of treating with berberine, the total extract does not appear to confer any additional benefits or disadvantages compared with the pure compound. Attityder till betygsättning i ordning och uppförande : En studie bland lärare och elever i Ålands lyceum

Syftet med den här uppsatsen har varit att ta reda på hur lärare och elever i Ålands lyceum förhåller sig till ordnings- och uppförandekriterier i betygsättningen. Vi har sett på skillnader mellan kön och också mellan olika ämnen och vi har också jämfört vårt resultat med tidigare undersökningar som gjorts i Sverige. Vår undersökning har gjorts bland 104 elever i årskurs två på gymnasiet och åtta lärare i ämnena matematik, historia, svenska och idrott. Undersökningen bland eleverna gjordes genom enkäter och bland lärarna genom intervjuer.Resultatet visar att lärarna tycker att ordning och uppförande ska vägas in i ämnesbetyget, precis som det görs nu i Ålands lyceum. Det har visat sig att en majoritet av eleverna vill ha ett separat betyg eller omdöme i ordning och uppförande. Flickorna är klart positivare till ett separat betyg i ordning och uppförande. De tycker också att ordnings- och uppförandekriterier ska vägas in mera i betygen. Det som vi också kommit fram till är att lärarna följer läroplanen i stor utsträckning, vilket till stor del beror på att de fått göra den själva. Resultaten mellan vår undersökning och tidigare undersökningar gjorda i Sverige skiljer sig inte så mycket, trots att lärarna på Åland ska ta hänsyn till ordning och uppförande i betygsättningen, medan lärarna i Sverige inte ska det.
