This work examines traditional and new routes for removal of H2S and other sulfur compounds from spent sufidic caustic (SSC). SH- (hydrogenosulfide) and S2- (sulfide) ions were quantitatively oxidized at 25 ºC using H2O2, NaOCl or a spent sulfochromic mixture. SH-/S2- ions were also removed via reaction with freshly prepared iron or manganese hydroxides, or after passing the SSC through strong basic anion exchange resins (OH- form). The treated caustic solution, as well as iron/manganese hydroxides, removed H2S from diesel samples at 25 ºC. SSC treatment via strong basic anion-exchange resins produced the treated caustic solution with the highest free alkalinity.

Strategies that enhance fat degradation or reduce caloricfood intake could be considered therapeutic interventions to reduce notonly obesity, but also its associated disorders. The enzyme carnitinepalmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1) is the critical rate-determining regulatorof fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and might play a key role in increasingenergy expenditure and controlling food intake. Our group has shownthat mice overexpressing CPT1 in liver are protected from weight gain,the development of obesity and insulin resistance. Regarding foodintake control, we observed that the pharmacological inhibition ofCPT1 in rat hypothalamus decreased food intake and body weight.This suggests that modulation of CPT1 activity and the oxidation offatty acids in various tissues can be crucial for the potential treatmentof obesity and associated pathologies.

Treatments for Chagas disease have been administered since the first attempts by Mayer & Rocha Lima (1912, 1914) and up to the drugs currently in use (nifurtimox and benznidazole), along with potential drugs such as allopurinol and first, second and third-generation antifungal agents (imidazoles and triazoles), in separate form. Several diseases such as tuberculosis, leprosy and AIDS only came under control after they were treated with associations of drugs with different mechanisms of action. This not only boosts the action of the different compounds, but also may avoid the development of parasite resistance .To this end, over the short term, we propose experimental studies on laboratory animals and clinical trials with the following associations: (i) nifurtimox (8 mg/kg/day) + benznidazole (5 mg/kg/day) x 60 consecutive days; (ii) nifurtimox (8 mg/kg/day) or benznidazole (5 mg/kg/day) + allopurinol (8-10 mg/kg/day) x 60 days and (iii) nifurtimox (8 mg/kg/day) or benznidazole (5 mg/kg/day) + ketoconazole, fluconazole or itraconazole (5-6 mg/kg/day) x 60 consecutive days. The doses of the drugs and the treatment schedules for the clinical trials must be adapted according to the side effects. From these, other double or triple associations could be made, using drugs with different mechanisms of action. This proposal does not exclude investigations on new drugs over the median and long terms, targeting other aspects of the metabolism of Trypanosoma cruzi. Until such time as the ideal drug for specific treatment of Chagas disease might be discovered, we need to develop new strategies for achieving greater efficacy with the old drugs in associations and to develop rational experimentation with new drugs.

Le rétinoblastome représente 11% de tous les cancers apparaissant pendant la première année de vie. Pour éviter les effets secondaires de la chimiothérapie systémique ou de la radiothérapie externe, de nouveaux médicaments et de nouvelles techniques de traitement focalisé ont été développés. Des voies d'administration telles la voie périoculaire (topotécan) ou la voie artérielle ophtalmique directe (carboplatine) sont utilisées aujourd'hui dans certains cas résistants. La radiothérapie actuelle, appliquée exclusivement en deuxième intention, fait appel également à des techniques ciblées, permettant d'éviter les tissus sains et de réduire le risque de cancers radio-induits non oculaires. La radiothérapie stéréotaxique conformationnelle ou conformale et la proton-thérapie font ainsi partie du nouvel arsenal thérapeutique du rétinoblastome. Retinoblastoma represents 11% of all cancers during the first year of life. New drugs and focal treatments have been developed in order to avoid the side effects of systemic chemotherapy and external radiotherapy. New targeted and local administration strategies such as periocular chemotherapy (topotecan) or direct ophthalmic artery delivery (carboplatin), are already used today in selected resistant cases. Radiotherapy, presently indicated only as a second-line treatment, is also subject to new techniques, targeting tumors more closely to avoid involving healthy tissue and reduce the risk of radio-induced nonocular tumors. Stereotactic conformal radiotherapy and proton therapy may thus be included in the new range of treatment methods in retinoblastoma

Transplantation of mobilized peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) for rescue of bone marrow function after high-dose chemo-/radiotherapy is widely used in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. Mobilization of stem cells to the peripheral blood can be achieved by cytokine treatment of the patients. The main advantage of autologous PBSC transplantation over bone marrow transplantation is the faster recovery of neutrophil and platelet counts. The threshold number of PBSC required for adequate rescue of bone marrow is thought to be about 2 x 106 CD34+ cells/kg, if the stem cells are collected by leukapheresis and subsequently cryopreserved. We show that this critical number could be further reduced to as few as 0.2 x 106 cells/kg. In 30 patients with multiple myeloma and 25 patients with bad risk lymphoma 1 liter of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-mobilized unprocessed whole blood (stored at 4oC for 1-3 days) was used for transplantation. Compared to a historical control group, a significant reduction in the duration of neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and the length of hospital stay was documented. Furthermore, the effect of stem cell support was reflected by a lower need for platelet and red cell transfusions and a reduced antibiotic use. Considering the data as a whole, a cost saving of about 50% was achieved. To date, this easy to perform method of transplantation is only feasible following high-dose therapies that are completed within 72 h, since longer storage of unprocessed blood is accompanied by a substantial loss of progenitor cell function. BACKGROUND Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents is the standard of care for treatment of native coronary artery stenoses, but optimum treatment strategies for bare metal stent and drug-eluting stent in-stent restenosis (ISR) have not been established. We aimed to compare and rank percutaneous treatment strategies for ISR. METHODS We did a network meta-analysis to synthesise both direct and indirect evidence from relevant trials. We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase for randomised controlled trials published up to Oct 31, 2014, of different PCI strategies for treatment of any type of coronary ISR. The primary outcome was percent diameter stenosis at angiographic follow-up. This study is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42014014191. FINDINGS We deemed 27 trials eligible, including 5923 patients, with follow-up ranging from 6 months to 60 months after the index intervention. Angiographic follow-up was available for 4975 (84%) of 5923 patients 6-12 months after the intervention. PCI with everolimus-eluting stents was the most effective treatment for percent diameter stenosis, with a difference of -9·0% (95% CI -15·8 to -2·2) versus drug-coated balloons (DCB), -9·4% (-17·4 to -1·4) versus sirolimus-eluting stents, -10·2% (-18·4 to -2·0) versus paclitaxel-eluting stents, -19·2% (-28·2 to -10·4) versus vascular brachytherapy, -23·4% (-36·2 to -10·8) versus bare metal stents, -24·2% (-32·2 to -16·4) versus balloon angioplasty, and -31·8% (-44·8 to -18·6) versus rotablation. DCB were ranked as the second most effective treatment, but without significant differences from sirolimus-eluting (-0·2% [95% CI -6·2 to 5·6]) or paclitaxel-eluting (-1·2% [-6·4 to 4·2]) stents. INTERPRETATION These findings suggest that two strategies should be considered for treatment of any type of coronary ISR: PCI with everolimus-eluting stents because of the best angiographic and clinical outcomes, and DCB because of its ability to provide favourable results without adding a new stent layer. Systematics is the study of diversity of the organisms and their relationships comprising classification, nomenclature and identification. The term classification or taxonomy means the arrangement of the organisms in groups (rate) and the nomenclature is the attribution of correct international scientific names to organisms and identification is the inclusion of unknown strains in groups derived from classification. Therefore, classification for a stable nomenclature and a perfect identification are required previously. The beginning of the new bacterial systematics era can be remembered by the introduction and application of new taxonomic concepts and techniques, from the 50’s and 60’s. Important progress were achieved using numerical taxonomy and molecular taxonomy. Molecular taxonomy, brought into effect after the emergence of the Molecular Biology resources, provided knowledge that comprises systematics of bacteria, in which occurs great evolutionary interest, or where is observed the necessity of eliminating any environmental interference. When you study the composition and disposition of nucleotides in certain portions of the genetic material, you study searching their genome, much less susceptible to environmental alterations than proteins, codified based on it. In the molecular taxonomy, you can research both DNA and RNA, and the main techniques that have been used in the systematics comprise the build of restriction maps, DNA-DNA hybridization, DNA-RNA hybridization, sequencing of DNA sequencing of sub-units 16S and 23S of rRNA, RAPD, RFLP, PFGE etc. Techniques such as base sequencing, though they are extremely sensible and greatly precise, are relatively onerous and impracticable to the great majority of the bacterial taxonomy laboratories. Several specialized techniques have been applied to taxonomic studies of microorganisms. In the last years, these have included preliminary electrophoretic analysis of soluble proteins and isoenzymes, and subsequently determination of deoxyribonucleic acid base composition and assessment of base sequence homology by means of DNA-RNA hybrid experiments beside others. These various techniques, as expected, have generally indicated a lack of taxonomic information in microbial systematics. There are numberless techniques and methodologies that make bacteria identification and classification study possible, part of them described here, allowing establish different degrees of subspecific and interspecific similarity through phenetic-genetic polymorphism analysis. However, was pointed out the necessity of using more than one technique for better establish similarity degrees within microorganisms. Obtaining data resulting from application of a sole technique isolatedly may not provide significant information from Bacterial Systematics viewpoint

AbstractINTRODUCTION: The use of the Self-Image Form (SIF) expands the identification of active leprosy cases to neighbors of index cases.METHODS: The SIF was used to screen two groups: case (neighbors of index cases of leprosy) and control (individuals residing next to houses without leprosy) group. A specialist investigated suspected leprosy cases for disease confirmation.RESULTS: New cases of leprosy were diagnosed in the case group (n = 7, 8.6%), but not the control group.CONCLUSIONS: The new surveillance strategy is inexpensive, efficient, and feasible within a primary health strategy. Future studies can help improve the use of the SIF.

Although the number of available antiviral drugs for hepatitis B infection (VHB) today is higher than ever, treatment of chronic VHB infection is still often managed by specialists because of the complex natural history of this viral infection and of the risk of selecting viral strains that are resistant to therapy. Different clinical and virological aspects need to be considered to establish a correct indication for therapy. Once antiviral therapy has been started, patients need close monitoring to guarantee adequate compliance and to detect promptly the selection of viral variants resisting to therapy.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), both hospital-acquired and community-acquired, is a dangerous pathogen that is involved in an increasing number of serious infections with high risk for morbidity and mortality. Community-acquired MRSA strains have epidemic potential and can be particularly virulent. Vancomycin has been the standard hospital treatment for the past 40 years, but vancomycin-resistant isolates of S. aureus have emerged in the USA, and vancomycin-intermediate isolates are increasingly being reported worldwide. New antimicrobial agents with activity against multidrug-resistant S. aureus and other resistant pathogens are urgently needed. Despite great strides, further advances in our understanding of the molecular and biochemical mechanisms responsible for antimicrobial resistance are still required. Several agents have been recently approved for the treatment of serious Gram-positive infections, including linezolid, daptomycin, and tigecycline. The novel investigational cephalosporin, ceftobiprole, is one of the first penicillinase-resistant agents to target penicillin-binding protein 2a (or PBP2a), an acquired PBP with low beta-lactam-affinity that confers intrinsic beta-lactam resistance to S. aureus and other staphylococci. This mechanism of PBP binding, including inhibition of PBP2a, confers broad-spectrum activity against clinically important Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens, including MRSA. Phase III clinical trials comparing ceftobiprole with vancomycin alone and in combination with ceftazidime for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections showed ceftobiprole to have efficacy similar to the efficacy of these comparators as evidenced by non-inferior clinical cure and microbiological eradication rates.

Södgren's syndrome treatment has essentially been based on symptomatic approach and has been of limited efficacy. Novel biological therapies targeting B cells, a key player in the pathophysiology of the syndrome, have recently been tested in controlled clinical trials and raise the hope of improving glandular and extraglandular manifestations of Söigren's syndrome.
