Here the computation would be done on the cardiac MR images to quantify the extent of damage inflicted by myocardial infarction on the cardiac muscle (myocardium) using Interpolation

Introduction: Hydrogen peroxide tooth bleaching is claimed to cause alterations in dental tissue structures. This study investigated the influence of the number of bleaching sessions on pulp tissue in rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats were studied in 5 groups (groups 1S-5S) of 10 each, which differed by the number (1-5) of bleaching sessions. In each session, the animals were anesthetized, and 35% hydrogen peroxide gel was applied to 3 upper right molars. Two days after the experimental period, the animals were killed, and their jaws were processed for light microscope evaluation. Pulp tissue reactions were scored as follows: 1, no or few inflammatory cells and no reaction; 2, <25 cells and a mild reaction; 3, between 25 and 125 cells and a moderate reaction; and 4, 125 or more cells and a severe reaction. Results from each experimental group were compared between groups and within groups to the corresponding unbleached upper left molars and analyzed for significant differences using the Kruskal-Wallis test (P < .05). Results: All tissue sections showed significant bleaching-induced changes in the dental pulp. After 1 bleaching session, necrotic tissue in the pulp horns and underlying inflammatory changes were observed. The extent and intensity of these changes increased with the number of bleaching sessions. After 5 sessions, the changes included necrotic areas in the pulp tissue involving the second third of the radicular pulp and intense inflammation in the apical third. Conclusions: The number of bleaching sessions directly influenced the extent of pulp damage. © 2013 American Association of Endodontists.

Experimental evidence suggests that somatostatin analogues may have a role to play in the management of lung tumours. We evaluated membrane preparations of nine small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cell lines and of tumour samples from 3 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 1 patient with an atypical carcinoid and another with a bronchial carcinoid for the presence of specific binding sites for RC-160, a potent growth inhibitory octapeptide analogue of somatostatin. Specific binding was noted on six of nine SCLC lines. Radio-receptor assay on the cell line NCI H 69 showed evidence of two specific binding sites for RC-160, one with high affinity and the other with low affinity. Binding sites were also found on all five tumour samples. Scatchard analysis indicated the presence of a single class of receptors with high affinity in each case. Histological assessment of the resected specimens before binding assay showed them to be comprised of tumour cells and necrotic tissue, stroma and/or inflammatory cells. Therefore, the specific binding of RC-160 may be to tissues other than the tumour cells. In 3 patients, from whom the tumour samples were obtained, radiolabelled somatostatin analogue scintigraphy using [111In] pentetreotide was performed prior to surgery. In all cases, the radiolabel localised the disease. This study demonstrates the presence of specific binding sites for RC-160 in SCLC. Furthermore, the detection of specific binding in vitro and in vivo in NSCLC and intrapulmonary carcinoids demonstrates that these tumours contain cells which express specific binding sites for somatostatin. These results suggest that RC-160 may have a role toplay as a therapeutic agent in lung cancer.

This thesis is a study of the x-ray scattering properties of tissues and tumours of the breast. Clinical radiography is based on the absorption of the x-rays when passing right through the human body and gives information about the densities of the tissues. Besides being absorbed, x-rays may change their direction within the tissues due to elastic scattering or even to refraction. The phenomenon of scattering is a nuisance to radiography in general, and to mammography in particular, because it reduces the quality of the images. However, scattered x-rays bear very useful information about the structure of the tissues at the supra-molecular level. Some pathologies, like breast cancer, produce alterations to the structures of the tissues, being especially evident in collagen-rich tissues. On the other hand, the change of direction due to refraction of the x-rays on the tissue boundaries can be mapped. The diffraction enhanced imaging (DEI) technique uses a perfect crystal to convert the angular deviations of the x-rays into intensity variations, which can be recorded as images. This technique is of especial interest in the cases were the densities of the tissues are very similar (like in mammography) and the absorption images do not offer enough contrast. This thesis explores the structural differences existing in healthy and pathological collagen in breast tissue samples by the small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) technique and compares these differences with the morphological information found in the DEI images and the histo-pathology of the same samples. Several breast tissue samples were studied by SAXS technique in the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. Scattering patterns of the different tissues of the breast were acquired and compared with the histology of the samples. The scattering signals from adipose tissue (fat), connective tissue (collagen) and necrotic tissue were identified. Moreover, a clear distinction could be done between the scattering signals from healthy collagen and from collagen from an invasive tumour. Scattering from collagen is very characteristic. It includes several scattering peaks and scattering features that carry information about the size and the spacing of the collagen fibrils in the tissues. It was found that the collagen fibrils in invaded tumours were thinner and had a d-spacing length 0,7% longer that fibrils from healthy tumours. The scattering signals from the breast tissues were compared with the histology by building colour-coded maps across the samples. They were also imaged with the DEI technique. There was a total agreement between the scattering maps, the morphological features seen in the images and the information of the histo- pathological examination. The thesis demonstrates that the x-ray scattering signal can be used to characterize tissues and that it carries important information about the pathological state of the breast tissues, thus showing the potential of the SAXS technique as a possible diagnostic tool for breast cancer.

Os receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos estão presentes em inúmeras células que participam do processo de reparo como fibroblastos, queratinócitos, células inflamatórias e células endoteliais. Diversos trabalhos demonstram que estes receptores modulam o processo de reparo tecidual. Entretanto, nenhum trabalho demonstrou se o bloqueio destes receptores compromete o reparo de úlceras de pressão. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do bloqueio dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos no reparo de úlceras de pressão em camundongos, para isto utilizamos um modelo não invasivo de lesão por isquemia e reperfusão. No presente estudo, utilizamos animais que foram tratados por gavagem com propranolol (um antagonista não seletivo dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos). A administração do antagonista teve início um dia antes do início dos ciclos de isquemia e reperfusão e se manteve diariamente até a eutanásia. Para desenvolver a úlcera de pressão, um par de magnetos foi aplicado no dorso dos animais previamente depilado. O período de permanência do magneto é caracterizado como período de isquemia, enquanto sua retirada é caracterizada como período de reperfusão. Os ciclos de isquemia e reperfusão foram repetidos duas vezes, e ao final do último ciclo, duas úlceras circulares foram criadas no dorso dos animais. Os animais foram mortos 3, 7, 14 e 21 dias após a lesão. Após o último ciclo de isquemia, o fluxo sanguíneo da área comprimida foi nulo, 7 horas após a compressão o fluxo sanguíneo estava elevado, com níveis superiores ao da pele normal. Após 24 e 48 horas, o fluxo sanguíneo estava reduzido e abaixo dos níveis da pele normal. O bloqueio dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos aumentou os níveis de peróxidos lipídicos 3 dias após a lesão, comprometeu a migração dos queratinócitos, levando a um aumento da proliferação epitelial, resultando em uma re-epitelização atrasada. O retardo na formação da neo-epiderme induzido pelo bloqueio destes receptores prejudicou a remoção do tecido necrótico. O bloqueio dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos aumentou o número de células inflamatórias (neutrófilos e macrófagos), os níveis proteicos de elastase neutrofílica 3 dias após a lesão e reduziu os níveis proteicos de MCP-1 3 dias após a lesão e os níveis proteicos de MMP-12 7 dias após a lesão. O bloqueio dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos aumentou a proliferação celular e apoptose no tecido conjuntivo 7 dias após a lesão e aumentou a densidade de vasos sanguíneos 14 e 21 dias após a lesão. O bloqueio dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos retardou a diferenciação miofibroblástica e reduziu os níveis proteicos de TGF-β 1/2/3 3 dias após a lesão e a contração da lesão. Vinte e um dias após a lesão, o bloqueio dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos aumentou a espessura da neo-epiderme e a expressão de tenascina-C em fibroblastos e reduziu a deposição de colágeno. Em conclusão, o bloqueio dos receptores β1- e β2-adrenérgicos atrasa o reparo tecidual em úlceras de pressão.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a dissolução do tecido pulpar pelo NaOCl contendo em sua composição agentes redutores da tensão superfical (Chlor-Xtra) quando comparados ao NaOCl convencional. Com esta finalidade 44 dentes unirradiculares humanos com tecido pulpar preservado em solução de formol a 10% foram agrupados em 22 pares de acordo com a semelhança de sua anatomia interna previamente avaliada por radiografias. Os canais foram instrumentados com sistema Protaper Universal e todo o processo de irrigação teve, além do tempo, seu volume e fluxo controlado por meio automatizado por meio do sistema Vatea Endodontic Iirrigation Device. Após cada canal que compunha um par ter sido instrumentado empregando-se uma das diferentes soluções testadas, as quais foram previamente avaliadas quanto a sua tensão superficial, ambos foram devidamente preparados e enviados para processamento e análise histológica. Cortes a 0,5, 1,2,3 e 4mm do ápice foram realizados, corados e fotografados. As imagens foram analisadas por meio do programa AxioVision a fim de estabelecer o percentual de tecido remanescente em relação à área total do canal nos segmentos estudados. As análises referentes a tensão superficial revelaram que o Chlor-Xtra demonstrou possuir significativamente menor tensão superficial quando comparado ao NaOCL convencional (p>0,05). A análise estatística por meio do test T student das áreas dos canais, demonstrou que o pareamento das amostras foi eficiente entre os grupo NaOCl e Chlor-Xtra (p>0,05). Em relação ao Percentual de Tecido Remanescente (PTR), os resultados revelaram por meio de análise feita pelo teste Kruskal-Wallis e o teste de correlação de Spearman que o nível de corte influencia significantemente o PTR (P<0,05).Por fim, o teste de Mann-Whitney indicou que o PTR não é influenciado pela solução irrigadora utilizada (P>0,05). A partir da análise dos resultados foi possível concluir que quanto mais apicalmente foi o nível de corte histológico dos canais estudados, maior foi o percentual de tecido pulpar remanescente independentemente da solução utilizada, portanto.não houve diferença significativa na qualidade do debridamento produzido pelas duas soluções testadas, desta forma indicando que a presença de agentes modificadores da tensão adicionados ao NaOCl não foi capaz de superar os resultados obtidos por soluções de NaOCl convencionais.

Photodynamic therapy involves delivery of a photosensitising drug that is activated by light of a specific wavelength, resulting in generation of highly reactive radicals. This activated species can cause destruction of targeted cells. Application of this process for treatment of microbial infections has been termed "photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy" (PACT). In the treatment of chronic wounds, the delivery of photosensitising agents is often impeded by the presence of a thick hyperkeratotic/necrotic tissue layer, reducing their therapeutic efficacy. Microneedles (MNs) are an emerging drug delivery technology that have been demonstrated to successfully penetrate the outer layers of the skin, whilst minimising damage to skin barrier function. Delivering photosensitising drugs using this platform has been demonstrated to have several advantages over conventional photodynamic therapy, such as, painless application, reduced erythema, enhanced cosmetic results and improved intradermal delivery. The aim of this study was to physically characterise dissolving MNs loaded with the photosensitising agent, methylene blue and assess their photodynamic antimicrobial activity. Dissolving MNs were fabricated from aqueous blends of Gantrez(®) AN-139 co-polymer containing varying loadings of methylene blue. A height reduction of 29.8% was observed for MNs prepared from blends containing 0.5% w/w methylene blue following application of a total force of 70.56 N/array. A previously validated insertion test was used to assess the effect of drug loading on MN insertion into a wound model. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans biofilms were incubated with various methylene blue concentrations within the range delivered by MNs in vitro (0.1-2.5 mg/mL) and either irradiated at 635 nm using a Paterson Lamp or subjected to a dark period. Microbial susceptibility to PACT was determined by assessing the total viable count. Kill rates of >96%, were achieved for S. aureus and >99% for E. coli and C. albicans with the combination of PACT and methylene blue concentrations between 0.1 and 2.5 mg/mL. A reduction in the colony count was also observed when incorporating the photosensitiser without irradiation, this reduction was more notable in S. aureus and E. coli strains than in C. albicans.

A cavidade oral é o quarto local mais afetado por neoplasias em cães e gatos, representando 3% em gatos e 6% em cães, podendo ser benignas ou malignas e de origem dental ou extradental. O objetivo do trabalho foi relatar o tratamento cirúrgico por hemi-maxilectomia parcial num cão de 10 anos de idade, da raça pastor alemão, atendido no Hospital Veterinário diagnosticado histopatologicamente por fibroma oral. Durante o exame físico foi observado um aumento de volume do tipo tumoral, no palato duro, estendendo-se desde o canino esquerdo até o primeiro molar, com tecido necrosado. Foram realizados hemograma, bioquímica sérica, urinálise, radiografia do tórax e biopsia. O tratamento cirúrgico instituído foi eficaz, pois após um ano não se observou qualquer sinal de recidiva tumoral.

Although many tropical insects carry infectious diseases, cutaneous injury can occur by other mechanisms, for example erucism (envenomation by caterpillars) or lepidopterism (dermatitis from moths). Pararama is a unique form of erucism seen in workers in contact with rubber trees in the Amazon, and it is caused by Premolis larvae, resulting in progressive periarticular fibrosis, ankylosis, and the loss of articulation. Ants and aquatic insects of the Belostomatidae family can cause painful bites and stings. Anaphylactic shock and death can result from the venom of bees and wasps. Beetles can cause vesicular dermatitis via cantharidin or paederin. Myiasis results from fly larvae (maggots) feeding on live or necrotic tissue of humans or other hosts, while New World screwworm fly larvae feed only on living tissue and burrow (ie, screw) more deeply when attempts are made to remove them. Tungiasis is characterized by very pruritic and painful papules and ulcers resulting from a Tunga flea penetrating the host's skin. Dermatologists should be able to diagnose and treat the cutaneous manifestations of these tropical insects and educate their patients on prevention. (J Am Acad Dermatol 2012; 67:339.e1-14.)
