A total of 797 specimens of wild adult triatomines, belonging to six species from the entomological collections of the Costa Rican National Biodiversity Institute, was studied from the standpoint of their relative abundance, as reflected by light traps, distribution in the country, seasonal variations and climatic and altitudinal preferences. Triatoma dimidiata was the most abundant species (32.9% of the total specimens), with a very extensive distribution in different ecological zones, being more common between 100 to 400 m above sea level mainly at the end of the dry season. T. dispar was the third in frequency (21.5%), with narrower distribution, more abundant between 600 to 800 m and scarce during the dry season. Panstrongylus geniculatus and P. rufotuberculatus, second and fourth in frequency (22.1% and 15.1%, respectively), were widely distributed on both the Pacific and Caribbean basins, the former being more common between 80 to 270 m all year round and the latter below 800 m mainly during the first semester. Eratyrus cuspidatus which represented only 4.9% of the insects, was also present on both basins mainly below 200 m with a tendency to be scarce during certain months of the year, and was found in all types of ecological zones. Finally, Rhodnius pallescens, the least abundant species (3.6%) was restricted to very humid areas below 20 m, on the north side and Caribbean basin. With the exception of R. pallescens, males were more commonly found than females. Some epidemiological implications related to the six species are discussed.

Networks are known to improve performance and create synergies. A research network can provide a significant advantage for all parties involved in research in surgery by systematically tracking the outcome of a huge number of patients over a long period of time. The aim of the present study was to investigate the experiences of surgeons with respect to research activities, to evaluate the opinions of surgeons with regard to the development of a national network for research in the field of surgery in Switzerland and to obtain data on how such a network should be designed.

In recent years, the Portuguese economy has gone through a severe adjustment process, which aected almost every sector of the economy. Therefore, it is important to study how the structure of the economy changed during this period. To that end, using data on the annual output by industry and product from National Accounts, we developed a network of industries for the years 2010 and 2013. By comparing the Minimal Spanning Trees and a set of topological coecients for the years considered, we evaluate the structural evolution of the economy. In order to get a long term view, we extended the analysis to the period between 1995 and 2010. We found that the industries linked to trade activities maintained their centrality, although they decreased their importance over time. Together with construction activities, they were among the most severely aected industries.
Online teaching of inflammatory skin pathology by a French-speaking international university network

Introduction: Developments in technology, webbased teaching and whole slide imaging have broadened the teaching horizon in anatomic pathology. Creating online learning material including many types of media like radiologic images, videos, clinical and macroscopic photographs and whole slides imaging is now accessible to almost every university. Unfortunately, a major limiting factor to maintain and update the learning material is the amount of work, time and resources needed. In this perspective, a French national university network was initiated in 2011 to build mutualised online teaching pathology modules with clinical cases and tests. This network has been extended to an international level in 2012-2014 (Quebec, Switzerland and Ivory Coast). Method: One of the first steps of the international project was to build a learning module on inflammatory skin pathology intended for interns and residents of pathology and dermatology. A pathology resident from Quebec spent 6 weeks in France and Switzerland to develop the contents and build the module on an e-learning Moodle platform (http: //moodle.sorbonne-paris-cite.fr) under the supervision of two dermatopathologists (BV, MB). The learning module contains text, interactive clinical cases, tests with feedback, whole slides images (WSI), images and clinical photographs. For that module, the virtual slides are decentralized in 2 universities (Bordeaux and Paris 7). Each university is responsible of its own slide scanning, image storage and online display with virtual slide viewers. Results: The module on inflammatory skin pathology includes more than 50 web pages with French original content, tests and clinical cases, links to over 45 WSI and more than 50 micro and clinical photographs. The whole learning module is currently being revised by four dermatopathologists and two senior pathologists. It will be accessible to interns and residents in spring 2014. The experience and knowledge gained from that work will be transferred to the next international fellowship intern whose work will be aimed at creating lung and breast pathology learning modules. Conclusion: The challenges of sustaining a project of this scope are numerous. The technical aspect of whole-slide imaging and storage needs to be developed by each university or group. The content needs to be regularly updated, completed and its use and existence needs to be promoted by the different actors in pathology. Of the great benefits of that kind of project are the international partnerships and connections that have been established between numerous Frenchspeaking universities and pathologists with the common goals of promoting education in pathology and the use of technology including whole slide imaging. * The Moodle website is hosted by PRES Sorbonne Paris Cité, and financial supports for hardware have been obtained from UNF3S (http://www.unf3s.org/) and PRES Sorbonne Paris Cité. Mit der Verwirklichung ,Ökologischer Netzwerke‘ werden Hoffnungen zum Stopp des Verlustes der biologischen Vielfalt verknüpft. Sowohl auf gesamteuropäischer Ebene (Pan-European Ecological Network - PEEN) als auch in den einzelnen Staaten entstehen Pläne zum Aufbau von Verbundsystemen. Im föderalen Deutschland werden kleinmaßstäbliche Biotopverbundplanungen auf Landesebene aufgestellt; zum nationalen Biotopverbund bestehen erste Konzepte. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist auf diese überörtlichen, strategisch vorbereitenden Planungsebenen ausgerichtet. Ziele des Verbunds sind der Erhalt von Populationen insbesondere der gefährdeten Arten sowie die Ermöglichung von Ausbreitung und Wanderung. Aufgrund fehlender Datengrundlagen zu den Arten und Populationen ist es nicht ohne weiteres möglich, die Konzepte und Modelle der Populationsökologie in die überörtlichen Planungsebenen zu übertragen. Gemäß der o.g. Zielstellungen sollte sich aber die Planung von Verbundsystemen an den Ansprüchen der auf Verbund angewiesenen Arten orientieren. Ziel der Arbeit war die Entwicklung einer praktikablen GIS-gestützten Planungshilfe zur größtmöglichen Integration ökologischen Wissens unter der Bedingung eingeschränkter Informationsverfügbarkeit. Als Grundlagen dazu werden in Übersichtsform zunächst die globalen, europäisch-internationalen und nationalen Rahmenbedingungen und Anforderungen bezüglich des Aufbaus von Verbundsystemen zusammengestellt. Hier sind die Strategien zum PEEN hervorzuheben, die eine Integration ökologischer Inhalte insbesondere durch die Berücksichtigung räumlich-funktionaler Beziehungen fordern. Eine umfassende Analyse der landesweiten Biotopverbundplanungen der BRD zeigte die teilweise erheblichen Unterschiede zwischen den Länderplanungen auf, die es aktuell nicht ermöglichen, ein schlüssiges nationales Konzept zusammenzufügen. Nicht alle Länder haben landesweite Biotopverbundplanungen und Landeskonzepte, bei denen dem geplanten Verbund die Ansprüche von Arten zugrunde gelegt werden, gibt es nur ansatzweise. Weiterhin wurde eine zielgerichtete Eignungsprüfung bestehender GIS-basierter Modelle und Konzepte zum Verbund unter Berücksichtigung der regelmäßig in Deutschland verfügbaren Datengrundlagen durchgeführt. Da keine integrativen regelorientierten Ansätze vorhanden waren, wurde der vektorbasierte Algorithmus HABITAT-NET entwickelt. Er arbeitet mit ,Anspruchstypen‘ hinsichtlich des Habitatverbunds, die stellvertretend für unterschiedliche ökologische Gruppen von (Ziel-) Arten mit terrestrischer Ausbreitung stehen. Kombiniert wird die Fähigkeit zur Ausbreitung mit einer Grobtypisierung der Biotopbindung. Die wichtigsten Grundlagendaten bilden die jeweiligen (potenziellen) Habitate von Arten eines Anspruchstyps sowie die umgebende Landnutzung. Bei der Bildung von ,Lebensraumnetzwerken‘ (Teil I) werden gestufte ,Funktions- und Verbindungsräume‘ generiert, die zu einem räumlichen System verknüpft sind. Anschließend kann die aktuelle Zerschneidung der Netzwerke durch Verkehrstrassen aufgezeigt werden, um darauf aufbauend prioritäre Abschnitte zur Wiedervernetzung zu ermitteln (Teil II). Begleitend wird das Konzept der unzerschnittenen Funktionsräume (UFR) entworfen, mit dem die Indikation von Habitatzerschneidung auf Landschaftsebene möglich ist. Diskutiert werden schließlich die Eignung der Ergebnisse als kleinmaßstäblicher Zielrahmen, Tests zur Validierung, Vergleiche mit Verbundplanungen und verschiedene Setzungen im GIS-Algorithmus. Erläuterungen zu den Einsatzmöglichkeiten erfolgen beispielsweise für die Bereiche Biotopverbund- und Landschaftsplanung, Raumordnung, Strategische Umweltprüfung, Verkehrswegeplanung, Unterstützung des Konzeptes der Lebensraumkorridore, Kohärenz im Schutzgebietssystem NATURA 2000 und Aufbau von Umweltinformationssystemen. Schließlich wird ein Rück- und Ausblick mit der Formulierung des weiteren Forschungsbedarfs verknüpft.

Background. Leopards Panthera pardus show genetically determined colour variation. Erythristic (strawberry) morphs, where individuals are paler and black pigment in the coat is replaced by a red-brown colour, are exceptionally rare in the wild. Historically, few records exist, with only five putative records from India known. Objectives. To record the presence of erythristic leopards in our study site (Thabo Thalo Wilderness Reserve, Mpumalanga), and to collate records from across South Africa. Method. A network of camera traps was used to record individual leopards at Thabo Thalo. We also surveyed local experts, searched the popular South African press and used social media to request observations. Results. Two out of 27 individual leopards (7.1%) recorded in our study site over three years were of this colour morph. We obtained records of five other erythristic leopards in the Waterberg and Mpumalanga region, with no reports outside of this population. Conclusions. Erythristic leopards are widely dispersed across north-west South Africa, predominantly in the Lydenburg region. The presence of this rare colour morph may reflect the consequences of population fragmentation.
