Techniques that employ (15)N have proved to be an important tool in many areas of the agronomic and biomedical sciences. Nevertheless, their use is limited by methodological difficulties and by the price of compounds in the international market. Nitric compounds ((15)NO(3)(-)) have attracted the interest of researchers. However, these compounds are not currently produced in Brazil. Thus, in the present work H(15)NO(3) was obtained from the oxidation of anhydrous (15)NH(3). The method we used differs from the industrial process in that the absorption tower is replaced with a polytetrafluoroethylene-lined, stainless-steel hydration reactor. The process output was evaluated based on the following parameters: reaction temperature; ratio of reagents; pressure and flow of (15)NH(3(g)) through the catalyst (Pt/Rh). The results showed that, at the best conditions (500 degrees C; 50% excess O(2); 0.4 MPa; and 3.39 g. min(-1) of (15)NH(3)), a conversion percentage (N-(15)NH(3) to N-(15)NO(3)(-)) of 62.2%, an overall nitrogen balance (N-(15)NH(3) + N-(15)NO(3)(-)) of 86.8%, and purity higher than 99% could be obtained.

For the first time, vertical column measurements of (HNO3) above the Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Observatory (AStrO) at Eureka (80N, 86W), Canada, have been made during polar night using lunar spectra recorded with a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, from October 2001 to March 2002. AStrO is part of the primary Arctic station of the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC). These measurements were compared with FTIR measurements at two other NDSC Arctic sites: Thule, Greenland (76.5N, 68.8W) and Kiruna, Sweden (67.8N, 20.4E). The measurements were also compared with two atmospheric models: the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (CMAM) and SLIMCAT. This is the first time that CMAM HNO3 columns have been compared with observations in the Arctic. Eureka lunar measurements are in good agreement with solar ones made with the same instrument. Eureka and Thule HNO3 columns are consistent within measurement error. Differences among HNO3 columns measured at Kiruna and those measured at Eureka and Thule can be explained on the basis of the available sunlight hours and the polar vortex location. The comparison of CMAM HNO3 columns with Eureka and Kiruna data shows good agreement, considering CMAM small inter-annual variability. The warm 2001/02 winter with almost no Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs) makes the comparison of the warm climate version of CMAM with these observations a good test for CMAM under no PSC conditions. SLIMCAT captures the magnitude of HNO3 columns at Eureka, and the day-to-day variability, but generally reports higher HNO3 columns than the CMAM climatological mean columns.

Microwave-assisted sample preparation using diluted nitric acid solutions is an alternative procedure for digesting organic samples. The efficiency of this procedure depends on the chemical properties of the samples and in this work it was evaluated by the determination of crude protein amount. fat and original carbon. Soybeans grains, bovine blood. bovine muscle and bovine viscera were digested in a cavity-microwave oven using oxidant mixtures in different acid concentrations. The digestion efficiency was evaluated based on the determination of residual carbon content and element recoveries using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). In order to determine the main residual organic compounds, the digests were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H NMR). Subsequently, studies concerning separation of nitrobenzoic acid isomers were performed by ion pair reversed phase liquid chromatography using a C18 stationary phase, water:acetonitrile:methanol (75:20:5, v/v/v) +0.05% (v/v) TFA as mobile phase and ultraviolet detection at 254 nm. Sample preparation based on diluted acids proved to be feasible and a recommendable alternative for organic sample digestion, reducing both the reagent volumes and the variability of the residues as a result of the process of decomposition. It was shown that biological matt-ices containing amino acids, proteins and lipids in their composition produced nitrobenzoic acid isomers and other organic compounds after cleavage of chemical bonds. The rapid synthesis of Mn3O4 powders by a two-step process of pyro-synthesis of ethylene glycol-metal nitrate precursor assisted by nitric acid is reported. A new strategy that accelerates the synthesis and allows obtaining highly pure crystalline Mn3O4 is discussed. The structural and morphological characteristics of the Mn3O4 powders are presented and discussed. The mechanism of formation of the Mn3O4 is also discussed. In comparison with other synthesis methods, the present method shows that the proposed route of synthesis has the main advantage of high production of the powder material in a very short time.

The stoichiometry of the polyanions formed by the action of nitric acid on sodium tungstate (< 0.01M) has been studied by means of electrometric techniques involving pH-potentiometric and conductometric titrations. The well defined inflections and breaks in the titration curves provide evidence for the existence of the polyanions, para-W12O41(10-) and meta-W12O39(6-) corresponding to the ratio of H+:WO4(2-) as 7:6 and 9:6 in the pH ranges 5.7-6.0 and 3.6-4.1, respectively. The interaction of lanthanum nitrate with sodium tungstate solutions, at specific pH levels 8.0, 5.9 and 4.0 was also studied by pH and conductometric titrations, in aqueous and alcoholic media, with each of the reagents alternatively used as titrant. The electrometric experiments provide definite evidence of the formation of normal-La2O3.3WO3, para-5La2O3.36WO3 and meta-La2O3.12WO3 tungstates in the vicinity of pH 6.3, 5.0 and 4.2, respectively. Analytical investigations on the precipitates formed confirm the results of the electrometric study.
