We report two new heteroleptic polypyridyl ruthenium complexes, coded C101 and C102, with high molar extinction coefficients by extending the pi-conjugation of spectator ligands, with a motivation to enhance the optical absorptivity of mesoporous titania film and charge collection yield in a dye-sensitized solar cell. On the basis of this C101 sensitizer, several DSC benchmarks measured under the air mass 1.5 global sunlight have been reached.

Nanocrystalline TiO2 deposited on conducting glass plates is shown to be an excellent material for preconcentration of silver and mercury, via photochemical reaction, prior to their detection by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). During the first stage of growth in the photoreduction of silver or mercury, 3D nuclei are formed on the TiO2 film. As the deposition proceeds micrometer size agglomerates grow on the surface. The conical morphology of the silver nuclei grown on a (110) rutile single crystal in the initial stages of growth suggests that there is a preferential deposition of silver at the centre of the growing nuclei. When the nuclei size reach a critical value (ca. 400 nm diameter, 40 nm height) the morphology changes to a globular shape without any preferential site for deposition on the surface of the silver nucleus. It was observed that micromolar concentrations of silver or mercury can be detected by anodic stripping voltammetry and relatively large amounts of these metals (micrometer scale nuclei) can be loaded on the nanocrystalline TiO2 film surface. The latter opens the possibility of analytical applications of nanocrystalline TiO2 electrodes for the selective detection of silver or mercury via photochemical anodic stripping voltammetry.

Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes a range of skin disorders as well as affecting vision and the immune system. It also inhibits development of plants and animals. UV radiation monitoring is used routinely in some locations in order to alert the population to harmful solar radiation levels. There is ongoing research to develop UV-selective-sensors [1–3]. A personal, inexpensive and simple UV-selective-sensor would be desirable to measure UV intensity exposure. A prototype of such a detector has been developed and evaluated in our laboratory. It comprises a sealed two-electrode photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) based on nanocrystalline TiO2. This abundant semiconducting oxide, which is innocuous and very sta-ble, is the subject of intense study at present due to its application in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) [4]. Since TiO2 has a wide band gap (EG = 3.0 eV for rutile and EG = 3.2 eV for anatase), it is inher-ently UV-selective, so that UV filters are not required. This further reduces the cost of the proposed photodetector in comparison with conventional silicon detectors. The PEC is a semiconductor–electrolyte device that generates a photovoltage when it is illuminated and a corresponding photocur-rent if the external circuit is closed. The device does not require external bias, and the short circuit current is generally a linear function of illumination intensity. This greatly simplifies the elec-trical circuit needed when using the PEC as a photodetector. DSSC technology, which is based on a PEC containing nanocrystalline TiO2 sensitized with a ruthenium dye, holds out the promise of solar cells that are significantly cheaper than traditional silicon solar cells. The UV-sensor proposed in this paper relies on the cre-ation of electron–hole pairs in the TiO2 by UV radiation, so that it would be even cheaper than a DSSC since no sensitizer dye is needed. Although TiO2 has been reported as a suitable material for UV sensing [3], to the best of our knowledge, the PEC configuration described in the present paper is a new approach. In the present study, a novel double-layer TiO2 structure has been investigated. Fabrication is based on a simple and inexpensive technique for nanostructured TiO2 deposition using microwave-activated chemical bath deposition (MW-CBD) that has been reported recently [5]. The highly transparent TiO2 (anatase) films obtained are densely packed, and they adhere very well to the transparent oxide (TCO) substrate [6]. These compact layers have been studied as contacting layers in double-layer TiO2 structures for DSSC since improvement of electron extraction at the TiO2–TCO interface is expected [7]. Here we compare devices incorporating a single mesoporous nanocrystalline TiO2 structure with devices based on a double structure in which a MW-CBD film is situated between the TCO and the mesoporous nanocrystalline TiO2 layer. Besides improving electron extraction, this film could also help to block recombination of electrons transferred to the TCO with oxidized species in the electrolyte, as has been reported in the case of DSSC for compact TiO2 films obtained by other deposition tech-niques [8,9]. The two types of UV-selective sensors were characterized in detail. The current voltage characteristics, spectral response, inten-sity dependence of short circuit current and response times were measured and analyzed in order to evaluate the potential of sealed mesoporous TiO2-based photoelectrochemical cells (PEC) as low cost personal UV-photodetectors.

Nanocrystalline TiO2 films have been synthesized on glass and silicon substrates by sol-gel technique. The films have been characterized with optical reflectance/transmittance in the wavelength range 300-1000nm and the optical constants (n, k) were estimated by using envelope technique as well as spectroscopic ellipsometry. Morphological studies have been carried Out using atomic force microscope (AFM). Metal-Oxide-Silicon (MOS) capacitor was fabricated using conducting coating on TiO2 film deposited on silicon. The C-V measurements show that the film annealed at 300 degrees C has a dielectric constant of 19.80. The high percentage of transmittance, low surface roughness and high dielectric constant suggests that it can be used as an efficient anti-reflection coating on silicon and other optical coating applications and also as a MOS capacitor.

A bifunctionalized TiO2 film containing a dye-sensitized zone and a catalysis zone is designed for visible-light photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to chemicals continuously. Charge separation can be accomplished with electron transferring to catalysis zone and positive charge transforming to anode. Highly efficient conversion of CO2 to formic acid, formaldehyde, and methanol is achieved through the transferring electrons on conduction bands (CB) of TiO2. Reduction of CO2 and O2 evolution take place in separated solutions on different catalysts. The separated solution carried out in this photo-reactor system can avoid CO2 reduction products being oxidized by anode. The yields of reduction products were enhanced remarkably by external electrical power. This study provides not only a new photocatalytic system but also a potential of renewable energy source via carbon dioxide.

The novelty of this study resides in the fabrication of a bio-sensing device, based on the surface acoustic wave (SAW) on a nanocrystalline ZnO film. The ZnO film was deposited using an rf magnetron sputtering at room temperature on silicon. The deposited films showed the c-axisoriented crystallite with grain size of ∼40 nm. The immunosensing device was fabricated using photolithographic protocols on the film. As a model biomolecular recognition and immunosensing, biospecific interaction between a 6-(2,4-dinitrophenyl) aminohexanoic acid (DNP) antigen and its antibody was employed, demonstrating the shifts of resonant frequencies on SAW immunosensing device. The device exhibited a linearity as a function of the antibody concentration in the range of 20∼20,000 ng/ml. © 2009 American Scientific Publishers. All rights reserved.

Au nanoparticles, which were photoreduced by a Nd:YAG laser in HAuCl4 solution containing TiO2 colloid and accompanied by the TiO2 particles, were deposited on the substrate surface. The film consisting of Au/TiO2 particles was characterized by the absorption spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The adhesion between the film and substrate was evaluated by using adhesive tape test. It was found that the presence of TiO2 dramatically enhanced the adhesion strength between the film and the substrate, as well as the deposition rate of film. The mechanism for the deposition of Au/TiO2 film was also discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The well known 'crystal seed' theory is first applied in this work to prepare TiO2 film: a high refractive index rutile TiO2 film is grown by electron beam evaporation on the rutile seed formed by 1100 degrees C annealing. The average n is larger than 2.4, by far the highest in all the authors' TiO2 films. The films are characterised by optical properties, microstructure and surface morphologies. It is found that the refractive index shows positive relation with the crystal structure, grain size, and packing density and roughness of the film. The film has lower density of granularity and nodule defects on the surface than those of the film deposited by magnetron sputtering. The result shows attractive application in complex filter and laser coatings.

The thin films of TiO2 doped by Mn non-uniformly were prepared by sol-gel method under process control. In our preceding study, we investigated in detail, the effect of doping mode on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 films showing that Mn non-uniform doping can greatly enhance the activity. In this study we looked at the effect of doping concentration on the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 films. In this paper, the thin films were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer and electrochemical workstation. The activity of the photocatalyst was also evaluated by photocatalytic degradation rate of aqueous methyl orange under UV radiation. The results illustrate that the TiO2 thin film doped by Mn non-uniformly at the optimal dopant concentration (0.7 at %) is of the highest activity, and on the contrary, the activity of those doped uniformly is decreased. As a comparison, in 80 min, the degradation rate of methyl orange is 62 %, 12 % and 34 % for Mn non-uniform doping film (0.7 at %), the uniform doping film (0.7 at %) and pure titanium dioxide film, respectively. We have seen that, for the doping and the pure TiO2 films, the stronger signals of open circuit potential and transient photocurrent, the better photocatalytic activity. We also discusse the effect of dopant concentration on the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 films in terms of effective separation of the photon-generated carriers in the semiconductor. Transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) has been used to study the interfacial electron-transfer reaction between photogenerated electrons in nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) films and molecular oxygen. TiO2 films from three different starting materials (TiO2 anatase colloidal paste and commercial anatase/rutile powders Degussa TiO2 P25 and VP TiO2 P90) have been investigated in the presence of ethanol as a hole scavenger. Separate investigations on the photocatalytic oxygen consumption by the films have also been performed with an oxygen membrane polarographic detector. Results show that a correlation exists between the electron dynamics of oxygen consumption observed by TAS and the rate of oxygen consumption through the photocatalytic process. The highest activity and the fastest oxygen reduction dynamics were observed with films fabricated from anatase TiO2 colloidal paste. The use of TAS as a tool for the prediction of the photocatalytic activities of the materials is discussed. TAS studies indicate that the rate of reduction of molecular oxygen is limited by interfacial electron-transfer kinetics rather than by the electron trapping/detrapping dynamics within the TiO2 particles.
