Histoplasmose residual dos pulmões e linfonodos broncopulmonares em necropsias realizadas em Uberaba, MG

Foram estudados pulmões e linfonodos broncopulmonares de 121 necrópsias seqüenciadas de adultos em Uberaba (MG), no período de 1992/1993, identificando-se nódulos e/ou linfonodos calcificados em 39 (30. 7%) casos. Na intimidade destas estruturas calcificadas detectaram-se fungos com morfologia compatível com Histoplasma capsulatum em 27 (69,2%) das 39 necrópsias; a pesquisa de bacilo-álcool- ácido-resistente através da técnica de Fite-Faraco foi negativa em todos os casos. Concluiu-se que em Uberaba a maioria dos nódulos e/ou linfonodos pulmonares calcificados encontrados em necrópsias está relacionada à infecção por Histoplasma capsulatum, levantando a possibilidade de tratar-se de uma área endêmica de histoplasmose, informação importante para o diagnóstico desta micose sistêmica em imunodeprímidos.

Linfonodo pulmonar na paracoccidioidomicose aguda infantil (relato de um caso).

The primary complex like Ghon was observed in a child's clinical roentgenographic study. C.S., white, male, 6 years old, was born in Curitiba (PR), Brazil and living in Guaratingueta (SP), Brazil, developed common cold, bimodal diary fever, chills, shake and sweats. Dyspnea, cough with general lymphadenopathy. Foot and right shoulder arthralgias. Six months ago visited a cave, equitation practice, dog and cat contacts and no transfusion, frontal sweats, fever (38.4 degrees C). T.A. was 8/6, tachycardia in generalized lymphadenopathy. Cardiopulmonary system was normal, mesogastric tumoral mass, hepatosplenomegaly and no ascites. Bone marrow with eosinophilia; nodule demonstrated presence of P. brasiliensis, hypoalbuminemia; hyperglobulinemia; anemia; leukocytosis with eosinophilia. Immunodiffusion with exoantigen 43 kd of P. brasiliensis was 1/32. Primary complex like Ghon was observed in interstitial pneumonia followed by mediastinal and mesogastric mass (35 to 40 days). Clavicular osteolytic lesions (45 to 60 days) appeared during paracoccidioidomycosis therapy. Recovery was observed 2 months after treatment of acute infantile paracoccidioidomycosis.

The relationship between exchange rate exposure, currency risk management and performance of international equity funds

This paper assesses the currency risk management policies for a sample of Australian international equity trusts. The relevance of currency risk management is considered in the context of exchange rate exposure and performance measures. The study incorporates differing economic climates and particular emphasis is given to the Asian crisis in mid-1997. Our results indicate that a good proportion of funds do implement specific currency risk management policies. Furthermore, we find that for those funds managing currency risk, there is some evidence of a favourable impact on currency exposure and fund performance.

Conditional performance evaluation and the relevance of money flows for Australian international equity funds

This paper assesses the importance of fund flows in the performance evaluation of Australian international equity funds. Two concepts of fund flows are considered in the context of a conditional asset pricing model. The first measure is net fund flow relative to fund size and the second is net fund flow relative to sector flows. We find that incorporating a fund flow measure relative to the sector flow results in a reduction of measured perverse market timing. The results indicate that, at the individual fund level, cash flows are relevant in assessing management outcomes.
