[Ru(HL)(PPh3)(2)Cl]Cl complexes have been obtained in which HL = N(4)-ortho (complex 1), N(4)-meta (complex 2) and N(4) pctratolyl 2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone (complex 3). NMR and electrochemical studies indicate that both cis and trans isomers exist in solution, and that the cis isomers are converted into the trans isomers with time. Crystal structure determination of (1) reveals that the traps isomer is formed in the solid state. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Six-membered C,N] cyclopalladated sym N,N',N `'-tri(4-tolyl)guanidines, (ArNH)(2)C=NAr] (sym = symmetrical; Ar = 4-MeC6H4; LH24-tolyl) of the types (C,N)Pd(mu-OC(O)R)](2) (1 and 2), (C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (3), cis-(C,N)PdLBr] (4-7), and (C,N)Pd(acac)] (8) were prepared in high yield by established methods with a view aimed at understanding the influence of the 4-tolyl substituent of the guanidine moiety upon the solution behaviour of 1-8. The composition of 1-8 was confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of 1-6 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Palladacycles 1-3 exist as a dimer in transoid conformation in the solid state while 4-6 exist as a monomer with cis configuration around the palladium atom as the Lewis base is placed cis to the Pd-C bond due to antisymbiosis. The NMR spectra of 1-8 revealed the presence of a single isomer in solution and this spectral feature is ascribed to the rapid inversion of the six-membered ``C,N]Pd'' ring due to the presence of sterically less hindered and more symmetrical 4-tolyl substituent in the =NAr unit of the guanidine moiety. An ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) was functionalized with an iso cyanate-bearing unsaturated monomer, allyl(3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate (TAI), with dicumyl peroxide as an initiator in a xylene solution. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to confirm the formation of EPM-g-TAI. The peak at 2273 cm(-1), characteristic of -NCO groups in EPM-g-TAI, revealed evidence of grafting. The grafting degree was determined with both chemical titration and FTIR. The grafting degree could be adjusted, and the maximum was over 6 wt % without any gelation. The molar mass distribution of EPM-g-TAI was narrower than that of EPM. The rheological behavior of both EPM-g-TAI and EPM was investigated with a rotational rheometer. The apparent viscosity of EPM-g-TAI was higher than that of EPM and increased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. Surface analysis by contact-angle measurements showed that contact angles of EPM-g-TAI samples to a given polar liquid decreased with an increasing grafting degree of TAI. We also obtained the dispersion component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), the polar component of the surface free energy (gamma(S)(d)), and the total surface free energy (gamma(S) = gamma(S)(d) + gamma(S)(p)) of the grafted EPM. These parameters increased with the enhancement of the grafting degree, which gave us a quantitative estimation of the polar contribution of the grafted TAI to the total surface free energy of EPM-g-TAI.

Three copper(II) complexes of salicylaldehyde N(4)-phenyl thiosemicarbazone (H2L1) and two copper(II) complexes of N(4)-cyclohexyl thiosemicarbazone (H2L2) have been synthesized and characterized by different physicochemical techniques like magnetic studies and electronic, infrared and EPR spectral studies. The complexes View the MathML source and [(CuL2)2] (4) having dimeric structure. The thiosemicarbazones bind to the metal as dianionic ONS donor ligand in all the complexes, except in the complex [Cu(HL1)2] · H2O (2). In complex 2, the ligand moieties are coordinated as monoanionic (HL−) ones. Two of the complexes [CuL1dmbipy] · H2O (3) and [CuL2dmbipy] (5) have been found to possess the stoichiometry [CuLB], where B = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine (dmbipy). The coordination geometry around copper(II) in 5 is trigonal bipyramidal distorted square based pyramidal (TBDSBP), as obtained by X-ray diffraction studies.

Thiosemicarbazones have recently attracted considerable attention due to their ability to form tridentate chelates with transition metal ions through either two nitrogen and sulfur atoms, N–N–S or oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur atoms, O–N–S. Considerable interest in thiosemicarbazones and their transition metal complexes has also grown in the areas of biology and chemistry due to biological activities such as antitumoral, fungicidal, bactericidal, antiviral and nonlinear optical properties. They have been used for metal analyses, for device applications related to telecommunications, optical computing, storage and information processing. The versatile applications of metal complexes of thiosemicarbazones in various fields prompted us to synthesize the tridentate NNS-donor thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes. As a part of our studies on transition metal complexes with these ligands, the researcher undertook the current work with the following objectives. 1. To synthesize and physico-chemically characterize the following thiosemicarbazone ligands: a. Di-2-pyridyl ketone-N(4)-methyl thiosemicarbazone (HDpyMeTsc) b. Di-2-pyridyl ketone-N(4)-ethyl thiosemicarbazone (HDpyETsc) 2. To synthesize oxovanadium(IV), manganese(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes using the synthesized thiosemicarbazones as principal ligands and some anionic coligands. 3. To study the coordination modes of the ligands in metal complexes by using different physicochemical methods like partial elemental analysis, thermogravimetry and by different spectroscopic techniques. 4. To establish the structure of compounds by single crystal XRD studies

Six Ru(II) complexes of formula [Ru(L)(2)(PPh3)(2)] have been prepared where LH = 4-(aryl)thiosemicarbazones of thiophen-2-carbaldehyde. X-ray crystal structures of five of the complexes are reported. In all the complexes ruthenium is six coordinate with a distorted octahedral cis-P-2, cis-N-2, trans-S-2 donor environment, and each of the two thiosemicarbazone ligands are coordinated in a bidentate fashion forming a four membered chelate ring. The complexes undergo a one-electron oxidation at similar to 0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The EPR spectrum of the electrochemically oxidized solution at 100 K shows a rhombic signal, with transitions at g(1) = 2.27, g(2) = 2.00 and g(3) = 1.80. DFT calculations on one of the complexes suggest that there is 35% ruthenium and 17% sulfur orbital contribution to the HOMO. These results suggest that the assignment of metal atom oxidation states in these compounds is not unambiguous. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aqua complex ions of metals must have existed since the appearance of water on the earth, and the subsequent appearance of life depended on, and may even have resulted from the interaction of metal ions with organic molecules. Studies on the coordinating ability of metal ions with other molecules and anions culminated in the theories of/\lfred Werner. Thereon the progress in the studies of metal complex chemistry was rapid. Many factors, like the utility and economic importance of metal chemistry, the intrinsic interest _in many of the compounds and the intellectual challenge of the structural problems to be solved, have contributed to this rapid progress. X—ray diffraction studies further accelerated the progress. The work cited in this thesis was carried out by the author in the Department of Applied Chemistry during 2001-2004. The primary aim of these investigations was to synthesise and characterize some transition metal complexes of 2-benzoylpyridine N(4)-substituted thiosemicarbazones and to study the antimicrobial activities of the ligands and their metal complexes. The work is divided into eight chapters

Two sets of graft copolymers were prepared by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) or ally] (3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate (TAI) onto ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer (EPDM) in an internal mixer. These graft copolymers were used as the compatibilizer to prepare the thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) containing 50 wt%, of poly(butylene terephthalate), PBT, 30 wt% of compatibilizer, and 20 wt% of nitrile-butadiene rubber, NBR. The indirect, two-step mixer process was chosen for dynamic curing.

Styrene-b-(ethylene-co-1-butene)-b-styrene (SEBS) triblock copolymer functionalized with epsilon-caprolactam blocked allyl (3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate (SEBS-g-BTAI) was used to toughen polyamide 6 (PA6) via reactive blending. Compared to the PA6/SEBS blends, mechanical properties such as tensile strength, Young's modulus, especially Izod notched strength of PA6/SEBS-g-BTAI blends were improved distinctly. Both theological and FTIR results indicated a new copolymer formed by the reaction of end groups of PA6 and isocyanate group regenerated in the backbone of SEBS-g-BTAI. Smaller dispersed particle sizes with narrower distribution were found in PA6/SEBS-g-BTAI blends, via field emitted scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The core-shell structures with PS core and PEB shell were also observed in the PA6/SEBS-g-BTAI blends via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which might improve the toughening ability of the rubber particles.

The epsilon-caprolactam was used to block the isocyanate group to enhance the storage stability of allyl (3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate. The spectra of FTIR and NMR showed that blocked allyl (3-isocyanate-4-tolyl) carbamate (BTAI) possesses two chemical functions, an 1-olefin double bond and a blocked isocyanate group. The FTIR spectrum showed BTAI could regenerate isocyanate group at elevated temperature. DSC and TG/DTA indicated the minimal dissociation temperature was about 135 degrees C and the maximal dissociation rate appeared at 226 degrees C. Then the styrene-b-(ethylene-co-1-butene)-b-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS) was functionalized by BTAI via melt free radical grafting. The effect of temperature, monomer and initiator concentrations on the grafting degree and grafting efficiency was evaluated. The highest grafting degree was obtained at 200 degrees C. The grafting degree and grafting efficiency increased with the enhanced concentration of BTAI or initiator.
