In this work, the effect of incorporation of recycled glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP) waste materials, obtained by means of shredding and milling processes, on mechanical behavior of polyester polymer mortar (PM) materials was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of GFRP recyclates (between 4% up to 12% in mass), were incorporated into polyester PM materials as sand aggregates and filler replacements. The effect of silane coupling agent addition to resin binder was also evaluated. Applied waste material was proceeding from the shredding of the leftovers resultant from the cutting and assembly processes of GFRP pultrusion profiles. Currently, these leftovers, jointly with unfinished products and scrap resulting from pultrusion manufacturing process, are landfilled, with supplementary added costs. Thus, besides the evident environmental benefits, a viable and feasible solution for these wastes would also conduct to significant economic advantages. Design of experiments and data treatment were accomplish by means of full factorial design approach and analysis of variance ANOVA. Experimental results were promising toward the recyclability of GFRP waste materials as aggregates and reinforcement for PM materials, with significant improvements on mechanical properties with regard to non-modified formulations.

Glass fibre-reinforced plastics (GFRP), nowadays commonly used in the construction, transportation and automobile sectors, have been considered inherently difficult to recycle due to both: cross-linked nature of thermoset resins, which cannot be remolded, and complex composition of the composite itself, which includes glass fibres, matrix and different types of inorganic fillers. Presently, most of the GFRP waste is landfilled leading to negative environmental impacts and supplementary added costs. With an increasing awareness of environmental matters and the subsequent desire to save resources, recycling would convert an expensive waste disposal into a profitable reusable material. There are several methods to recycle GFR thermostable materials: (a) incineration, with partial energy recovery due to the heat generated during organic part combustion; (b) thermal and/or chemical recycling, such as solvolysis, pyrolisis and similar thermal decomposition processes, with glass fibre recovering; and (c) mechanical recycling or size reduction, in which the material is subjected to a milling process in order to obtain a specific grain size that makes the material suitable as reinforcement in new formulations. This last method has important advantages over the previous ones: there is no atmospheric pollution by gas emission, a much simpler equipment is required as compared with ovens necessary for thermal recycling processes, and does not require the use of chemical solvents with subsequent environmental impacts. In this study the effect of incorporation of recycled GFRP waste materials, obtained by means of milling processes, on mechanical behavior of polyester polymer mortars was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of recycled GFRP waste materials, with distinct size gradings, were incorporated into polyester polymer mortars as sand aggregates and filler replacements. The effect of GFRP waste treatment with silane coupling agent was also assessed. Design of experiments and data treatment were accomplish by means of factorial design and analysis of variance ANOVA. The use of factorial experiment design, instead of the one factor at-a-time method is efficient at allowing the evaluation of the effects and possible interactions of the different material factors involved. Experimental results were promising toward the recyclability of GFRP waste materials as polymer mortar aggregates, without significant loss of mechanical properties with regard to non-modified polymer mortars.

The micellization of a homologous series of zwitterionic surfactants, a group of sulfobetaines, was studied using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) in the temperature range from 15 to 65 °C. The increase in both temperature and the alkyl chain length leads to more negative values of ΔGmic(0) , favoring the micellization. The entropic term (ΔSmic(0)) is predominant at lower temperatures, and above ca. 55-65 °C, the enthalpic term (ΔHmic(0)) becomes prevalent, figuring a jointly driven process as the temperature increases. The interaction of these sulfobetaines with different polymers was also studied by ITC. Among the polymers studied, only two induced the formation of micellar aggregates at lower surfactant concentration: poly(acrylic acid), PAA, probably due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the carboxylic group of the polymer and the sulfonate group of the surfactant, and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate), PSS, probably due to the incorporation of the hydrophobic styrene group into the micelles. The prevalence of the hydrophobic and not the electrostatic contributions to the interaction between sulfobetaine and PSS was confirmed by an increased interaction enthalpy in the presence of electrolytes (NaCl) and by the observation of a significant temperature dependence, the latter consistent with the proposed removal of hydrophobic groups from water.

The electrocatalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with a ruthenium oxide hexacyanoferrate (RuOHCF) was investigated using rotating disc electrode (RDE) voltammetry aiming to improve the performance of the sensor for hydrogen peroxide detection. The influence of parameters such as rotation speed, film thickness and hydrogen peroxide concentration indicated that the rate of the cross-chemical reaction between Ru(II) centres immobilized into the film and hydrogen peroxide controls the overall process. The kinetic regime could be classified as LSk mechanism, according to the diagnostic table proposed by Albery and Hillman, and the kinetic constant of the mediated process was found to be 706 mol(-1) cm(3) s(-1). In the LSk case the reaction layer is located at a finite layer close to the modifier layer/solution interface

The technique based on sol-gel approach was used to generate silica matrices derivatives by hydrolysis of silane compounds. The present work evaluates a hybrid matrix obtained with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on the immobilization yield of lipase from Pseudomonas fluorescens. The resulting polysiloxane-polyvinyl alcohol (POS-PVA) matrix combines the property of PVA as a suitable polymer to retain proteins with an excellent optical, thermal and chemical stability of the host silicon oxide matrix. Aiming to render adequate functional groups to the covalent binding with the enzyme the POS-PVA matrix was chemically modified using epichlorohydrin. The results were compared with immobilized derivative on POS-PVA activated with glutaraldehyde. Immobilization yield based on the recovered lipase activity depended on the activating agent and the highest efficiency (32%) was attained when lipase was immobilized on POS-PVA activated with epichlorohydrin, which, probably, provided more linkage points for the covalent bind of the enzyme on the support. This was confirmed by determining the morphological properties using different techniques as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Comparative studies were carried out to attain optimal activities for free lipase and immobilized systems. For this purpose, a central composite experimental design with different combinations of pH and temperature was performed. Enzymatic hydrolysis with the immobilized enzyme in the framework of the Michaelis-Menten mechanism was also reported. Under optimum conditions, the immobilized derivative on POS-PVA activated with epichlorohydrin showed to have more affinity for the substrate in the hydrolysis of olive oil, with a Michaelis-Menten constant value (K-m) of 293 mM, compared to the value of 401 mM obtained for the immobilized lipase on support activated with glutaraldehyde. Data generated by DSC showed that both immobilized derivatives have similar thermal stabilities. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Several composites based on high-density polyethylene (PE), organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymer (EMAA) were prepared by melt compounding. Three Na(+)-montmorillonites (MMT) of different precedence were modified with hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride in order to change their nature from hydrophilic to organophilic. The composites morphology was examined by XRD, SEM and TEM. Mechanical properties were evaluated under static conditions. A slight reinforcement was achieved only when OMMT was added to PE. When EMAA was added to the composites, it negatively interacted with OMMT, diminishing the interlayer distance of OMMT, changing the composite morphology, as if OMMT was not present in composites, and deteriorating their mechanical properties. This work investigates the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cystamine and cystamine-glutaraldehyde on a screen-printed electrode, and the immobilization of the Tc85 protein (from Trypanosoma cruzi) on these monolayers. The methods used included infrared techniques, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrochemical studies were performed at pH 6.9 in 0.1 mol L(-1) phosphate buffer solution containing Fe(CN)(6)(-3/-4) redox species. The surface coverage (0) of the electrode was 0.10 (cystamine), 0.35 (cystamine-glutaraldehyde) and 0.84 (Tc85). Interpretation of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results was based on a charge-transfer reaction involving Fe(CN)(6)(-3/-4) species at high frequencies, followed by a diffusion through the monolayers at lower frequencies. Estimates of the electrode surface coverage, active site radius, and distance between two adjacent sites assumed that charge transfer occurred at the active sites, and that there was a planar diffusion of redox species to these sites. Grafts of biological tissues have been used since the 1960s as an alternative to the mechanical heart prostheses. Nowadays, the most consolidated treatment to bovine pericardial (BP) bioprostheses is the crosslinking with glutaraldehyde (GA), although GA may induce calcification in vivo. In previous work, our group demonstrated that electron beam irradiation applied to lyophilized BP in the absence of oxygen promoted crosslinks among collagen fibers of BP tissue. In this work, the incorporation of silk fibroin (SF) and chitosan (CHIT) in the BP not treated with GA was studied. The samples were irradiated and then analyzed for their cytotoxicity and the ability of adhesion and growth of endothelial cells. Initially, all samples showed cytotoxicity. However, after a few washing cycles, the cytotoxicity due to acetic acid and ethanol residues was removed from the biomaterial making it suitable for the biofunctional test. The samples modified with SF/CHIT and electron beam irradiated favored the adhesion and growth of endothelial cells throughout the tissue.

This study focused on the development of a sensitive enzymatic biosensor for the determination of pirimicarb pesticide based on the immobilization of laccase on composite carbon paste electrodes. Multi- walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)paste electrode modified by dispersion of laccase(3%,w/w) within the optimum composite matrix(60:40%,w/w,MWCNTs and paraffin binder)showed the best performance, with excellent electron transfer kinetic and catalytic effects related to the redox process of the substrate4- aminophenol. No metal or anti-interference membrane was added. Based on the inhibition of laccase activity, pirimicarb can be determined in the range 9.90 ×10- 7 to 1.15 ×10- 5 molL 1 using 4- aminophenol as substrate at the optimum pH of 5.0, with acceptable repeatability and reproducibility (relative standard deviations lower than 5%).The limit of detection obtained was 1.8 × 10-7 molL 1 (0.04 mgkg 1 on a fresh weight vegetable basis). The high activity and catalytic properties of the laccase- based biosensor are retained during ca. one month. The optimized electroanalytical protocol coupled to the QuEChERS methodology were applied to tomato and lettuce samples spiked at three levels; recoveries ranging from 91.0±0.1% to 101.0 ± 0.3% were attained. No significant effects in the pirimicarb electro- analysis were observed by the presence of pro-vitamin A, vitamins B1 and C,and glucose in the vegetable extracts. The proposed biosensor- based pesticide residue methodology fulfills all requisites to be used in implementation of food safety programs.

In this study the effect of incorporation of recycled glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) waste materials, obtained by means of milling processes, on mechanical behaviour of polyester polymer mortars was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of recycled GFRP waste powder and fibres, with distinct size gradings, were incorporated into polyester based mortars as sand aggregates and filler replacements. Flexural and compressive loading capacities were evaluated and found better than unmodified polymer mortars. GFRP modified polyester based mortars also show a less brittle behaviour, with retention of some loading capacity after peak load. Obtained results highlight the high potential of recycled GFRP waste materials as efficient and sustainable reinforcement and admixture for polymer concrete and mortars composites, constituting an emergent waste management solution.
