The control of the spread of dengue fever by introduction of the intracellular parasitic bacterium Wolbachia in populations of the vector Aedes aegypti, is presently one of the most promising tools for eliminating dengue, in the absence of an efficient vaccine. The success of this operation requires locally careful planning to determine the adequate number of mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia parasite that need to be introduced into the natural population. The latter are expected to eventually replace the Wolbachia-free population and guarantee permanent protection against the transmission of dengue to human. In this paper, we propose and analyze a model describing the fundamental aspects of the competition between mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia and mosquitoes free of the parasite. We then introduce a simple feedback control law to synthesize an introduction protocol, and prove that the population is guaranteed to converge to a stable equilibrium where the totality of mosquitoes carry Wolbachia. The techniques are based on the theory of monotone control systems, as developed after Angeli and Sontag. Due to bistability, the considered input-output system has multivalued static characteristics, but the existing results are unable to prove almost-global stabilization, and ad hoc analysis has to be conducted.

A complete and monotonically-ordered fuzzy rule base is necessary to maintain the monotonicity property of a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS). In this paper, a new monotone fuzzy rule relabeling technique to relabel a non-monotone fuzzy rule base provided by domain experts is proposed. Even though the Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based monotone fuzzy rule relabeling technique has been investigated in our previous work [7], the optimality of the approach could not be guaranteed. The new fuzzy rule relabeling technique adopts a simple brute force search, and it can produce an optimal result. We also formulate a new two-stage framework that encompasses a GA-based rule selection scheme, the optimization based-Similarity Reasoning (SR) scheme, and the proposed monotone fuzzy rule relabeling technique for preserving the monotonicity property of the FIS model. Applicability of the two-stage framework to a real world problem, i.e., failure mode and effect analysis, is further demonstrated. The results clearly demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed framework.

Sufficient conditions are given for the L2-stability of a class of feedback systems consisting of a linear operator G and a nonlinear gain function, either odd monotone or restricted by a power-law, in cascade, in a negative feedback loop. The criterion takes the form of a frequency-domain inequality, Re[1 + Z(jω)] G(jω) δ > 0 ω ε (−∞, +∞), where Z(jω) is given by, Z(jω) = β[Y1(jω) + Y2(jω)] + (1 − β)[Y3(jω) − Y3(−jω)], with 0 β 1 and the functions y1(·), y2(·) and y3(·) satisfying the time-domain inequalities, ∝−∞+∞¦y1(t) + y2(t)¦ dt 1 − ε, y1(·) = 0, t < 0, y2(·) = 0, t > 0 and ε > 0, and , c2 being a constant depending on the order of the power-law restricting the nonlinear function. The criterion is derived using Zames' passive operator theory and is shown to be more general than the existing criteria

We develop an optimal, distributed, and low feedback timer-based selection scheme to enable next generation rate-adaptive wireless systems to exploit multi-user diversity. In our scheme, each user sets a timer depending on its signal to noise ratio (SNR) and transmits a small packet to identify itself when its timer expires. When the SNR-to-timer mapping is monotone non-decreasing, timers of users with better SNRs expire earlier. Thus, the base station (BS) simply selects the first user whose timer expiry it can detect, and transmits data to it at as high a rate as reliably possible. However, timers that expire too close to one another cannot be detected by the BS due to collisions. We characterize in detail the structure of the SNR-to-timer mapping that optimally handles these collisions to maximize the average data rate. We prove that the optimal timer values take only a discrete set of values, and that the rate adaptation policy strongly influences the optimal scheme's structure. The optimal average rate is very close to that of ideal selection in which the BS always selects highest rate user, and is much higher than that of the popular, but ad hoc, timer schemes considered in the literature.

This paper establishes a global contraction property for networks of phase-coupled oscillators characterized by a monotone coupling function. The contraction measure is a total variation distance. The contraction property determines the asymptotic behavior of the network, which is either finite-time synchronization or asymptotic convergence to a splay state. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt Restartautomaten und Erweiterungen von Restartautomaten. Restartautomaten sind ein Werkzeug zum Erkennen formaler Sprachen. Sie sind motiviert durch die linguistische Methode der Analyse durch Reduktion und wurden 1995 von Jancar, Mráz, Plátek und Vogel eingeführt. Restartautomaten bestehen aus einer endlichen Kontrolle, einem Lese/Schreibfenster fester Größe und einem flexiblen Band. Anfänglich enthält dieses sowohl die Eingabe als auch Bandbegrenzungssymbole. Die Berechnung eines Restartautomaten läuft in so genannten Zyklen ab. Diese beginnen am linken Rand im Startzustand, in ihnen wird eine lokale Ersetzung auf dem Band durchgeführt und sie enden mit einem Neustart, bei dem das Lese/Schreibfenster wieder an den linken Rand bewegt wird und der Startzustand wieder eingenommen wird. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich hauptsächlich mit zwei Erweiterungen der Restartautomaten: CD-Systeme von Restartautomaten und nichtvergessende Restartautomaten. Nichtvergessende Restartautomaten können einen Zyklus in einem beliebigen Zustand beenden und CD-Systeme von Restartautomaten bestehen aus einer Menge von Restartautomaten, die zusammen die Eingabe verarbeiten. Dabei wird ihre Zusammenarbeit durch einen Operationsmodus, ähnlich wie bei CD-Grammatik Systemen, geregelt. Für beide Erweiterungen zeigt sich, dass die deterministischen Modelle mächtiger sind als deterministische Standardrestartautomaten. Es wird gezeigt, dass CD-Systeme von Restartautomaten in vielen Fällen durch nichtvergessende Restartautomaten simuliert werden können und andererseits lassen sich auch nichtvergessende Restartautomaten durch CD-Systeme von Restartautomaten simulieren. Des Weiteren werden Restartautomaten und nichtvergessende Restartautomaten untersucht, die nichtdeterministisch sind, aber keine Fehler machen. Es zeigt sich, dass diese Automaten durch deterministische (nichtvergessende) Restartautomaten simuliert werden können, wenn sie direkt nach der Ersetzung einen neuen Zyklus beginnen, oder ihr Fenster nach links und rechts bewegen können. Außerdem gilt, dass alle (nichtvergessenden) Restartautomaten, die zwar Fehler machen dürfen, diese aber nach endlich vielen Zyklen erkennen, durch (nichtvergessende) Restartautomaten simuliert werden können, die keine Fehler machen. Ein weiteres wichtiges Resultat besagt, dass die deterministischen monotonen nichtvergessenden Restartautomaten mit Hilfssymbolen, die direkt nach dem Ersetzungsschritt den Zyklus beenden, genau die deterministischen kontextfreien Sprachen erkennen, wohingegen die deterministischen monotonen nichtvergessenden Restartautomaten mit Hilfssymbolen ohne diese Einschränkung echt mehr, nämlich die links-rechts regulären Sprachen, erkennen. Damit werden zum ersten Mal Restartautomaten mit Hilfssymbolen, die direkt nach dem Ersetzungsschritt ihren Zyklus beenden, von Restartautomaten desselben Typs ohne diese Einschränkung getrennt. Besonders erwähnenswert ist hierbei, dass beide Automatentypen wohlbekannte Sprachklassen beschreiben.

We introduce a new mode of operation for CD-systems of restarting automata by providing explicit enable and disable conditions in the form of regular constraints. We show that, for each CD-system M of restarting automata and each mode m of operation considered by Messerschmidt and Otto, there exists a CD-system M' of restarting automata of the same type as M that, working in the new mode ed, accepts the language that M accepts in mode m. Further, we prove that in mode ed, a locally deterministic CD-system of restarting automata of type RR(W)(W) can be simulated by a locally deterministic CD-system of restarting automata of the more restricted type R(W)(W). This is the first time that a non-monotone type of R-automaton without auxiliary symbols is shown to be as expressive as the corresponding type of RR-automaton.

The need for monotone approximation of scattered data often arises in many problems of regression, when the monotonicity is semantically important. One such domain is fuzzy set theory, where membership functions and aggregation operators are order preserving. Least squares polynomial splines provide great flexbility when modeling non-linear functions, but may fail to be monotone. Linear restrictions on spline coefficients provide necessary and sufficient conditions for spline monotonicity. The basis for splines is selected in such a way that these restrictions take an especially simple form. The resulting non-negative least squares problem can be solved by a variety of standard proven techniques. Additional interpolation requirements can also be imposed in the same framework. The method is applied to fuzzy systems, where membership functions and aggregation operators are constructed from empirical data.

In this paper, a new online updating framework for constructing monotonicity-preserving Fuzzy Inference Systems (FISs) is proposed. The framework encompasses an optimization-based Similarity Reasoning (SR) scheme and a new monotone fuzzy rule relabeling technique. A complete and monotonically-ordered fuzzy rule base is necessary to maintain the monotonicity property of an FIS model. The proposed framework attempts to allow a monotonicity-preserving FIS model to be constructed when the fuzzy rules are incomplete and not monotonically-ordered. An online feature is introduced to allow the FIS model to be updated from time to time. We further investigate three useful measures, i.e., the belief, plausibility, and evidential mass measures, which are inspired from the Dempster- Shafer theory of evidence, to analyze the proposed framework and to give an insight for the inferred outcomes from the FIS model.

A search in the literature reveals that mathematical conditions (usually sufficient conditions) for the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) models to satisfy the monotonicity property have been developed. A monotonically-ordered fuzzy rule base is important to maintain the monotonicity property of an FIS. However, it may difficult to obtain a monotonically-ordered fuzzy rule base in practice. We have previously introduced the idea of fuzzy rule relabeling to tackle this problem. In this paper, we further propose a monotonicity index for the FIS system, which serves as a metric to indicate the degree of a fuzzy rule base fulfilling the monotonicity property. The index is useful to provide an indication whether a fuzzy rule base should (or should not) be used in practice, even with fuzzy rule relabeling. To illustrate the idea, the zero-order Sugeno FIS model is exemplified. We add noise as errors into the fuzzy rule base to formulate a set of non-monotone fuzzy rules. As such, the metric also acts as a measure of noise in the fuzzy rule base. The results show that the proposed metric is useful to indicate the degree of a fuzzy rule base fulfilling the monotonicity property.

A vector field in n-space determines a competitive (or cooperative) system of differential equations provided all of the off-diagonal terms of its Jacobian matrix are nonpositive (or nonnegative). The main results in this article are the following. A cooperative system cannot have nonconstant attracting periodic solutions. In a cooperative system whose Jacobian matrices are irreducible the forward orbit converges for almost every point having compact forward orbit closure. In a cooperative system in 2 dimensions, every solution is eventually monotone.  Applications are made to generalizations of positive feedback loops.
