A new glass-forming organic semiconductor material was synthesized using a known electron transport material, perylene diimide, and attaching it to a molecular glass in order to allow the material to be solution processed. Devices were made using a simple metal-semiconductor-metal structure and electrodes were selected to produce Schottky diodes. Experiments were carried out to characterize this new molecular glass perylene diimide. The new material shows evidence of traps, hysteresis, and other behaviours that are explored in this thesis. The material shows some potential as an electron transport layer with possibilities of memory storage behaviour.

Surface patterning that occurs spontaneously during the formation of a thin film is a powerful tool for controlling film morphology at the nanoscale level because it avoids the need for further processing. However, one must first learn under which conditions these patterning phenomena occur or not, and how to achieve control over the surface morphologies that are generated. Mexylaminotriazine-based molecular glasses are small molecules that can readily form amorphous thin films. It was discovered that this class of materials can either form smooth films, or films exhibiting either dome or pore patterns. Depending on the conditions, these patterns can be selectively obtained during film deposition by spin-coating. It was determined that this behavior is controlled by the presence of water or, more generally, of a solvent in which the compounds are insoluble, and that the relative amount and volatility of this poor solvent determines which type of surface relief is obtained. Moreover, AFM and FT-IR spectroscopy have revealed that the thin films are amorphous independently of surface morphology, and no difference was observed at the molecular or supramolecular level. These findings make this class of materials and this patterning approach in general extremely appealing for the control of surface morphology with organic nanostructures.

Thermodynamics, equilibrium structure, and dynamics of glass-forming liquids Ca(NO(3))(2)center dot nH(2)O, n=4, 6, and 8, have been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A polarizable model was considered for H(2)O and NO(3)- on the basis of previous fluctuating charge models for pure water and the molten salt 2Ca(NO(3))(2)center dot 3KNO(3). Similar thermodynamic properties have been obtained with nonpolarizable and polarizable models. The glass transition temperature, T(g), estimated from MD simulations was dependent on polarization, in particular the dependence of T(g) with electrolyte concentration. Significant polarization effects on equilibrium structure were observed in cation-cation, cation-anion, and water-water structures. Polarization increases the diffusion coefficient of H(2)O, but does not change significantly the diffusion coefficients of ions. Viscosity decreases upon inclusion of polarization, but the conductivity calculated with the polarizable model is smaller than the nonpolarizable model because polarization enhances anion-cation interactions.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of LiCl center dot 6H(2)O Showed that the diffusion coefficient D, and also I lie structural relaxation time , follow a power law at high temperatures, D(-1) proportional to (T - T(0))(-mu), with the same experimental parameters for viscosity (T(0) = 207 K, mu = 2.08). Decoupling between D and occurs at T(x) similar to 1.1 T(0). High frequency acoustic excitations for the LiCl center dot 6H(2)O model were obtained by the calculation of time correlation functions of mass current fluctuations. The temperature dependence of the instantaneous shear modulus, G,(T), was considered in the shoving model for supercooled liquids [J.C. Dyre, T. Christensen, N.B. Olsen, J. Non-Cryst. Solids 352 (2006) 4635] resulting in a linear relationship log (D(-1)) vs. G root T. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The pressure dependence of the glass-transition temperature, T(g)(P), of the ionic glass-former 2Ca(NO(3))(2) center dot 3KNO(3), CKN, has been obtained by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations The liquid-glass difference of thermal expansivity, Delta alpha, heat capacity, Delta C(p), and isothermal compressibility, Delta kappa, have been calculated as a function of pressure. It has been found that the Ehrenfest relation dT(g)/dP = TV Delta alpha/Delta C(p) predicts the pressure dependence of T, but the other Ehrenfest relation, dT(g)/dP = Delta kappa/Delta alpha, does not. Consequently, the Prigogine-Defay ratio, Pi = Delta C(p)Delta kappa/TV Delta alpha(2), is Pi similar to 1.2 at low pressures, but increases 1 order of magnitude at high pressures. The pressure dependence of the Prigogine-Defay ratio is interpreted in light of recent explanations for the finding Pi > 1.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the oligonucleotide duplex d(CGCGCG)2 in aqueous solution are used to investigate the glass transition phenomenon. The simulations were performed at temperatures in the 20 K to 340 K range. The mean square atomic fluctuations showed that the behavior of the oligonucleotide duplex was harmonic at low temperatures. A glass transition temperature at 223 K to 234 K was inferred for the oligonucleotide duplex, which is in agreement with experimental observations. The largest number of hydrogen bounds between the polar atoms of the oligonucleotide duplex and the water molecules was obtained at the glass transition temperature. With increasing temperature we observed a decrease in the average lifetime of the hydrogen bonds to water molecules.

Molecular dynamics (MD) has been used to identify the relative distribution of dysprosium in the phosphate glass DyAl0.30P3.05O9.62. The MD model has been compared directly with experimental data obtained from neutron diffraction to enable a detailed comparison beyond the total structure factor level. The MD simulation gives Dy ... Dy correlations at 3.80(5) and 6.40(5) angstrom with relative coordination numbers of 0.8(1) and 7.3(5), thus providing evidence of minority rare-earth clustering within these glasses. The nearest neighbour Dy-O peak occurs at 2.30 angstrom with each Dy atom having on average 5.8 nearest neighbour oxygen atoms. The MD simulation is consistent with the phosphate network model based on interlinked PO4 tetrahedra where the addition of network modifiers Dy3+ depolymerizes the phosphate network through the breakage of P-(O)-P bonds whilst leaving the tetrahedral units intact. The role of aluminium within the network has been taken into explicit account, and A1 is found to be predominantly (78 tetrahedrally coordinated. In fact all four A1 bonds are found to be to P (via an oxygen atom) with negligible amounts of Al-O-Dy bonds present. This provides an important insight into the role of Al additives in improving the mechanical properties of these glasses.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the glass-forming liquid 2Ca(NO(3))(2)center dot 3KNO(3) (CKN) were performed from high temperature liquid states down to low temperature glassy states at six different pressures from 10(-4) to 5.0 GPa. The temperature dependence of the structural relaxation time indicates that the fragility of liquid CKN changes with pressure. In line with recent proposal [Scopigno , Science 302, 849 (2003)], the change on liquid fragility is followed by a proportional change of the nonergodicity factor of the corresponding glass at low temperature. Changes in molecular motion in blends of PEO-PVPh have been studied using measurements of C-13 T-1 rho relaxation times. C-13 T-1 rho relaxation has been confirmed as arising from spin-lattice interactions by observation of the variation in T-1 rho with rf field strength and temperature. In the pure homopolymers a minimum in T-1 rho is observed at ca. 50 K above the glass transition temperatures detected by DSC. After blending, the temperature of the minimum in T-1 rho for PEO increased, while that for PVPh decreased, however, the minima, which correspond to the temperatures where the average correlation times for reorientation are close to 3.1 mu s, are separated by 45 K (in a 45% PEO-PVPh blend). These phenomena are explained in terms of the local nature of T-1 rho measurements. The motions of the individual homopolymer chains are only partially coupled in the blend. A short T-1 rho has been observed for protonated aromatic carbons, and assigned to phenyl rings undergoing large-angle oscillatory motion, The effects of blending, and temperature, on the proportion of rings undergoing oscillatory motion are analyzed.

This paper presents the results of the characterisation of templated silica xerogels as precursor material for molecular sieve silica membranes for gas separation. The template agent integrated in the xerogel matrix is a methyl ligand covalently bended to the siloxane network in the form of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES). Several surface and microstructural characterisation techniques such as TGA, FTIR, NMR, and nitrogen adsorption have been employed to obtain information on the reaction mechanisms involved in the sol-gel processing of such molecular sieves. The characterisation results show the effects of processing parameters such as heat treatment temperature, and the concentration of the covalently bonded template on the development of the pore structure. It was found that calcination temperature significantly enhanced the condensation reactions thus resulted in more Si-O-Si groups being formed. This was also confirmed with the data of FTIR characterisation showing enhanced silicon bands at higher heat treatment temperatures. As a result of the promoted densification and shrinkable pore network the micropore volume also reduced with increasing methyl ligand molar ratio. However, the mean pore diameter does not change significantly with calcination temperature. While the contribution of the templates towards controlling pore size is less precise, increasing the methyl ligand molar ratio results in the broadening of the pore size distribution and lower pore volume. Higher template concentration induces the collapse of the xerogel matrix due to capillary stress promoting dense xerogels with low pore volume (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

High quality MSS membranes were synthesised by a single-step and two-step catalysed hydrolyses employing tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), absolute ethanol (EtOH), I M nitric acid (HNO3) and distilled water (H2O). The Si-29 NMR results showed that the two-step xerogels consistently had more contribution of silanol groups (Q(3) and Q(2)) than the single-step xerogel. According to the fractal theory, high contribution of Q(2) and Q(3) species are responsible for the formation of weakly branched systems leading to low pore volume of microporous dimension. The transport of diffusing gases in these membranes is shown to be activated as the permeance increased with temperature. Albeit the permeance of He for both single-step and two-step membranes are very similar, the two-step membranes permselectivity (ideal separation factor) for He/CO2 (69-319) and He/CH4 (585-958) are one to two orders of magnitude higher than the single-step membranes results of 2-7 and 69, respectively. The two-step membranes have high activation energy for He and H-2 permeance, in excess of 16 kJ mol(-1). The mobility energy for He permeance is three to six-fold higher for the two-step than the single-step membranes. As the mobility energy is higher for small pores than large pores and coupled with the permselectivity results, the two-step catalysed hydrolysis sol-gel process resulted in the formation of pore sizes in the region of 3 Angstrom while the single-step process tended to produce slightly larger pores.
