This study tested hypotheses that locus of causality attributions for the academic performance of others are influenced by whether the other is a specific individual, or a typical other, and whether the other is similar or dissimilar to self. The research was carried out in two studies. Study 1 entailed development of two scales to measure perceptions of interpersonal similarity: 254 Australian undergraduates rated their similarity to either a specific other or to typical other students. In Study 2, 332 subjects completed one of the 16-item scales developed in Study 1, along with Rosenberg's self-esteem scale, and self-attribution and other-attribution versions of the Multidimensional Multi-attribution Causation Scale (MMCS). Results showed that attributions for the academic performance of others were strongly affected by whether the other was perceived to be similar or dissimilar to self, especially when the other was a specific individual. In particular, causal attributions for similar specific others were more favourable than attributions for self.

Yield strength (YS) ageing curves have been modelled for A356 and A357 aluminium casting alloys below the solvus temperature of the main hardening precipitate. Predictions are based on the Shercliff and Ashby methodology (Acta MetaH. Mater. 38 (1990) 1789) for wrought alloys. Differences between strengthening in wrought and cast Al-Si-Mg alloys are considered. A Brinell hardness to YS conversion incorporating strain hardening has been established to enable YS ageing curves to be predicted with reduced experimental effort. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. We determined NGF involvement in MMCs and colonic motor alterations in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced gut dysfunction model in rats. Animals received OVA (6 weeks), with/without simultaneous K252a (TrkA antagonist) treatment. MMCs, rat mast cell protease II (RMCPII) levels and colonic contractility in vitro were assessed. OVA increased MMC density and RMCPII concentration. Spontaneous contractility was similar in both groups and inhibited by K252a. Carbachol responses were increased by OVA in a K252a-independent manner. NO-synthase inhibition increased spontaneous activity in OVA-treated animals in a K252a-dependent manner. These observations support an involvement of NGF in the functional changes observed in this model.

The corrosion behaviour of metal matrix composites (MMCs) is strictly linked with the presence of heterogeneities such as reinforcement phase, microcrevices, porosity, secondary phase precipitates, and interaction products. Most of the literature related to corrosion behaviour of aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) is focused on SiC reinforced AMCs. On the other hand, there is very limited information available in the literature related to the tribocorrosion behaviour of AMCs. Therefore, the present work aims to investigate corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviour of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy matrix composites reinforced with B4C particulates. Corrosion behaviour of 15 and 19% (vol) B4C reinforced Al-Si-Cu-Mg matrix composites and the base alloy was investigated in 0.05M NaCl solution by performing immersion tests and potentiodynamic polarisation tests. Tribocorrosion behaviour of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy and its composites were also investigated in 0.05M NaCl solution. The tests were carried out against alumina ball using a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer. Electrochemical measurements were performed before, during, and after the sliding tests together with the recording of the tangential force. Results suggest that particle addition did not affect significantly the tendency of corrosion of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy without mechanical interactions. During the tribocorrosion tests, the counter material was found to slide mainly on the B4C particles, which protected the matrix alloy from severe wear damage. Furthermore, the wear debris were accumulated on the worn surfaces and entrapped between the reinforcing particles. Therefore, the tendency of corrosion and the corrosion rate decreased in Al-Si-Cu-Mg matrix B4C reinforced composites during the sliding in 0.05M NaCl solution. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is an Amazon herb using in native cultures in Peru. In mammals, it has been described several effects of this herb. However, this is the first report of its use on the diet of fish. The aim of this study was to determinate the effect of this plant on the growth and immune activity in Oreochromis niloticus. Nile tilapia (81.3 ± 4.5 g) were distributed into 5 groups and supplemented with 0 (non-supplement fish), 75, 150, 300, and 450 mg of U. tomentosa.kg(-1) of diet for a period of 28 days. Fish were inoculated in the swim bladder with inactivated Streptococcus agalactiae and samples were taken at 6, 24, and 48 h post inoculation (HPI). Dose dependent increases were noted in some of the evaluated times of thrombocytes and white blood cells counts (WBC) in blood and exudate, burst respiratory activity, lysozyme activity, melanomacrophage centers count (MMCs), villi length, IgM by immunohistochemistry in splenic tissue, and unexpectedly on growth parameters. However, dietary supplementation of this herb did not affect red blood cells count (RBC), hemoglobin, and there were no observed histological lesions in gills, intestine, spleen, and liver. The current results demonstrate for the first time that U. tomentosa can stimulate fish immunity and improve growth performance in Nile tilapia.

Foundry aluminum alloys play a fundamental role in several industrial fields, as they are employed in the production of several components in a wide range of applications. Moreover, these alloys can be employed as matrix for the development of Metal Matrix Composites (MMC), whose reinforcing phases may have different composition, shape and dimension. Ceramic particle reinforced MMCs are particular interesting due to their isotropic properties and their high temperature resistance. For this kind of composites, usually, decreasing the size of the reinforcing phase leads to the increase of mechanical properties. For this reason, in the last 30 years, the research has developed micro-reinforced composites at first, characterized by low ductility, and more recently nano-reinforced ones (the so called metal matrix nanocomposite, MMNCs). The nanocomposites can be obtained through several production routes: they can be divided in in-situ techniques, where the reinforcing phase is generated during the composite production through appropriate chemical reactions, and ex situ techniques, where ceramic dispersoids are added to the matrix once already formed. The enhancement in mechanical properties of MMNCs is proved by several studies; nevertheless, it is necessary to address some issues related to each processing route, as the control of process parameters and the effort to obtain an effective dispersion of the nanoparticles in the matrix, which sometimes actually restrict the use of these materials at industrial level. In this work of thesis, a feasibility study and implementation of production processes for Aluminum and AlSi7Mg based-MMNCs was conducted. The attention was focused on the in-situ process of gas bubbling, with the aim to obtain an aluminum oxide reinforcing phase, generated by the chemical reaction between the molten matrix and industrial dry air injected in the melt. Moreover, for what concerns the ex-situ techniques, stir casting process was studied and applied to introduce alumina nanoparticles in the same matrix alloys. The obtained samples were characterized through optical and electronic microscopy, then by micro-hardness tests, in order to evaluate possible improvements in mechanical properties of the materials.

Homologous recombination contributes both to the generation of allelic diversity and to the preservation of genetic information. In plants, a lack of suitable experimental material has prevented studies of the regulatory and enzymatic aspects of recombination in somatic and meiotic cells. We have isolated nine Arabidopsis thaliana mutants hypersensitive to x-ray irradiation (xrs) and examined their recombination properties. For the three xrs loci described here, single recessive mutations were found to confer simultaneous hypersensitivities to the DNA-damaging chemicals mitomycin C (MMCs) and/or methyl methanesulfonate (MMSs) and alterations in homologous recombination. Mutant xrs9 (Xrays, MMSs) is reduced in both somatic and meiotic recombination and resembles yeast mutants of the rad52 epistatic group. xrs11 (Xrays, MMCs) is deficient in the x-ray-mediated stimulation of homologous recombination in somatic cells in a manner suggesting a specific signaling defect. xrs4 (Xrays, MMSs, MMCs) has a significant deficiency in somatic recombination, but this is accompanied by meiotic hyper-recombination. A corresponding phenotype has not been reported in other systems and thus this indicates a novel, plant-specific regulatory circuit linking mitotic and meiotic recombination.

The mechanical properties and wear behaviour of B(SiC) fibre-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) and aluminium alloy (2014) produced by metal infiltration technique were determined. Tensile tests were peliormed at different conditions on both the alloy matrix and its composite, and the tensile fracture surfaces were also examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Dry wear of the composite materials sliding on hardened steel was studied using a pin-on-disc type machine. The effect of fibre orientation on wear rate was studied to provide wear resistance engineering data on the MMCs. Tests were carried out with the wear surface sliding direction set normal, parallel and anti-parallel to the fibre axis. Experiments were perfonned for sliding speeds of 0.6, 1.0 and 1.6 m/s for a load range from 12 N to 60 N. A number of sensitive techniques were used to examine worn surface and debris, i.e: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Backscattered Electron Microscopy (BSEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, the effect of fibre orientation on the wear rate of the Borsic-reinforced plastic matrix composites (PMCs) produced by hot pressing technique was also investigated under identical test conditions. It was found that the composite had a markedly increased tensile strength compared with the matrix. The wear results also showed that the composite exhibited extremely low wear rates compared to the matrix material and the wear rate increased with increasing sliding speed and normal load. The effect of fibre orientation was marked, the lowest wear rates were obtained by arranging the fibre perpendicular to the sliding surface, while the highest wear was obtained for the parallel orientation. The coefficient of friction was found to be lowest in the parallel orientation than the others. Wear of PMCs were influenced to the greatest extent by these test parameters although similar findings were obtained for both composites. Based on the results of analyses using SEM, BSED and XPS, possible wear mechanisms are suggested to explain the wear of these materials.

Interfaces in conventional monolithic alloys exert an important influence on fatigue and fracture behavior. In discontinuously reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs), the role of interface is even more dominant. The interfacial is higher in MMCs and the interfaces are generally of high energy and chemically unstable. This paper reviews the factors which can affect interfacial strength in discontinuously reinforced MMCs, and the ways in which interfacial strength can be controlled. The effects of interfacial strength on fatigue crack propagation and fracture behavior are then illustrated.
