We have studied the optical properties of a series of InGaN/AlInGaN 10-period multiple quantum wells (MQW) with differing well thickness grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy that emit at around 380 nm. The aim of this investigation was to optimise the room temperature internal quantum efficiency, thus the quantum well (QW) thicknesses were accordingly chosen so that the overlap of the electron/hole wave function was maximised. At low temperature, we observed a reduction of the photo luminescence decay time with decreasing well width in line with the theoretical predictions. For a structure with well thicknesses of 1.5 nm, we measured a photoluminescence internal quantum efficiency of 67% at room temperature with a peak emission wavelength of 382 nm. The electrical and microstructural properties of SnO2-based varistors with the addition of 0.025 and 0.050 mol% of Fe2O3 have been characterised. Electric field (E) versus current density (J) curves showed that the effect of Fe2O3 addition is to increase both the non-linear coefficient and the breakdown voltage. Variations in the potential barrier height were inferred from impedance spectroscopy (IS) analysis. Through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the presence of precipitates of secondary phases was confirmed. Samples with precipitates displayed poor electrical properties. We report a study on the micro-structural changes in GaN due to neon ion implantation using the x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering techniques. An implantation dose of 10(14) cm(-2) was found unable to produce lattice deformation observable by Raman measurements. For higher doses of implantation several disorder activated Raman scattering centers were observed which corroborate the literature. A new dose dependent feature has been recorded at 1595 cm(-1) for higher implantation doses which is suggested to be the vibrational mode of microcavities produced in the lattice.

A 275 mu m thick GaN layer was directly grown on the SiO2-prepatterned sapphire in a home-built vertical hydride vapour phase epitaxy (HVPE) reactor. The variation of optical and structure characteristics were microscopically identified using spatially resolved cathodeluminescence and micro-Raman spectroscopy in a cross section of the thick film. The D X-0(A) line with the FWHM of 5.1 meV and etch- pit density of 9 x 10(6) cm(-2) illustrated high crystalline quality of the thick GaN epitaxial layer. Optically active regions appeared above the SiO2 masks and disappeared abruptly due to the tapered inversion domains at 210 - 230 mu m thickness. The crystalline quality was improved by increasing the thickness of the GaN/sapphire interface, but the region with a distance of 2 mu m from the top surface revealed relatively low quality due to degenerate surface reconstruction by residual gas reaction. The x-ray rocking curve for the symmetric (0 0 2) and asymmetric (1 0 2) reflections also showed good quality and a small wing tilt of the epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) GaN.

Epitaxial growth of AlN has been performed by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with ammonia. The structural properties of materials were studied by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD and TEM diffraction pattern confirm the AlN is single crystalline 2H-polytype with the epitaxial relationship of (0001)AlNparallel to(111)Si, [11 (2) over bar0](AlN)parallel to[110](Si), [10 (1) over bar0](AlN)parallel to[11 (2) over bar](Si). Micro-Raman scattering measurement shows that the E-2 (high) and A(1) (LO) phonon mode shift 9 cm(-1) toward the low frequency, which shows the existence of large tensile strain in the AlN films. Furthermore, the appearance of forbidden A, (TO) mode and its anomalous shift toward high frequency was found and explained. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Pb1-xCaxTiO3 (0.10less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.40) thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates were prepared by the soft solution process and their characteristics were investigated as a function of the calcium content (x). The structural modifications in the films were studied using x-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering techniques. Lattice parameters calculated from x-ray data indicate a decrease in lattice tetragonality with the increasing content of calcium in these films. Raman spectra exhibited characteristic features of pure PbTiO3 thin films. Variations in the phonon mode wave numbers, especially those of lower wave numbers, of Pb1-xCaxTiO3 thin films as a function of the composition corroborate the decrease in tetragonality caused by the calcium doping. As the Ca content (x) increases from 0.10 to 0.40, the dielectric constant at room temperature abnormally increased at 1 kHz from 148 to 430. Also calcium substitution decreased the remanent polarization and coercive field from 28.0 to 5.3 muC/cm(2) and 124 to 58 kV/cm, respectively. These properties can be explained in terms of variations of phase transition (ferroelectric-paraelectric), resulting from the substitution the lead site of PbTiO(3)for the nonvolatile calcium. Food microstructure represents the way their elements arrangement and their interaction. Researchers in this field benefit from identifying new methods of examination of the microstructure and analysing the images. Experiments were undertaken to study micro-structural changes of food material during drying. Micro-structural images were obtained for potato samples of cubical shape at different moisture contents during drying using scanning electron microscopy. Physical parameters such as cell wall perimeter, and area were calculated using an image identification algorithm, based on edge detection and morphological operators. The algorithm was developed using Matlab.

The relationship between coronal knee laxity and the restraining properties of the collateral ligaments remains unknown. This study investigated correlations between the structural properties of the collateral ligaments and stress angles used in computer-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA), measured with an optically based navigation system. Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric knees (mean age: 81 ± 11 years) were dissected to leave the menisci, cruciate ligaments, posterior joint capsule and collateral ligaments. The resected femur and tibia were rigidly secured within a test system which permitted kinematic registration of the knee using a commercially available image-free navigation system. Frontal plane knee alignment and varus-valgus stress angles were acquired. The force applied during varus-valgus testing was quantified. Medial and lateral bone-collateral ligament-bone specimens were then prepared, mounted within a uni-axial materials testing machine, and extended to failure. Force and displacement data were used to calculate the principal structural properties of the ligaments. The mean varus laxity was 4 ± 1° and the mean valgus laxity was 4 ± 2°. The corresponding mean manual force applied was 10 ± 3 N and 11 ± 4 N, respectively. While measures of knee laxity were independent of the ultimate tensile strength and stiffness of the collateral ligaments, there was a significant correlation between the force applied during stress testing and the instantaneous stiffness of the medial (r = 0.91, p = 0.001) and lateral (r = 0.68, p = 0.04) collateral ligaments. These findings suggest that clinicians may perceive a rate of change of ligament stiffness as the end-point during assessment of collateral knee laxity.

Al-C-N-O composite thin films have been synthesized by radio frequency reactive diode sputtering of an aluminum target in plasmas of N2+O2+CH4 gas mixtures. The chemical structure and composition of the films have been investigated by means of infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results reveal the formation of C-N, Al-C, Al-N and Al-O bonds. The X-ray diffraction pattern suggests that the films are of nanometer composite material and contain predominately crystalline grains of hexagonal AlN and α-Al2O3. A good thermal stability of the composite has been confirmed by the annealing treatment at temperatures up to 600 °C.

This study provides information about wood quality, structural properties, processing characterists and product suitability of wood harvested from fast-grown hardwood plantations. Wood quality attributes tested included density, extractive content, unit shrinkage, heartwood proportion and sapwood width. Structural properties tested included small clear and full section strength and stiffness, hardness, joint group, visual grade assessment and natural vibration-based grade assessment. The variation between the inner, intermediate and outer heartwood zones and the variation between provenances was also tested. Overall, the wood qualtiy attributes measured for 19 year-old E. cloeziana and 15 year-old E. pellita plantation material fall between those expected from the wood of mature, native forest trees and those found in younger plantation material of the same species.

The potato virus A (PVA) genome linked protein (VPg) is a multifunctional protein that takes part in vital infection cycle events such as replication and movement of the virus from cell to cell. VPg is attached to the 5´ end of the genome and is carried in the tip structure of the filamentous virus particle. VPg is also the last protein to be cleaved from the polyprotein. VPg interacts with several viral and host proteins and is phosphorylated at several positions. These features indicate a central role in virus epidemiology and a requirement for an efficient but flexible mechanism for switching between different functions. -- This study examines some of the key VPg functions in more detail. Mutations in the positively charged region from Ala38 to Lys44 affected the NTP binding, uridylylation, and in vitro translation inhibition activities of VPg, whereas in vivo translation inhibition was not affected. Some of the data generated in this study implicated the structural flexibility of the protein in functional activities. VPg lacks a rigid structure, which could allow it to adapt conformationally to different functions as needed. A major finding of this study is that PVA VPg belongs to the class of ´intrinsically disordered proteins´ (IDPs). IDPs are a novel protein class that has helped to explain the observed lack of structure. The existence of IDPs clearly shows that proteins can be functional and adapt a native fold without a rigid structure. Evidence for the intrinsic disorder of VPg was provided by CD spectroscopy, NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy, bioinformatic analysis, and limited proteolytic digestion. The structure of VPg resembles that of a molten globule-type protein and has a hydrophobic core domain. Approximately 50% of the protein is disordered and an α-helical stabilization of these regions has been hypothesized. Surprisingly, VPg structure was stabilized in the presence of anionic lipid vesicles. The stabilization was accompanied by a change in VPg structure and major morphological modifications of the vesicles, including a pronounced increase in the size and appearance of pore or plaque like formations on the vesicle surface. The most likely scenario seems to be an α-helical stabilization of VPg which induces formation of a pore or channel-like structure on the vesicle surface. The size increase is probably due to fusion or swelling of the vesicles. The latter hypothesis is supported by the evident disruption of the vesicles after prolonged incubation with VPg. A model describing the results is presented and discussed in relation to other known properties of the protein.

The influence of chemical specificity of hydrophilic surfaces on the structure of confined water in the subnanometer regime is investigated using grand canonical Monte Carlo Simulations. The structural variations for water confined between hydroxylated silica surfaces are contrasted with water confined between mica surfaces. Although both surfaces are hydrophilic, our Study shows that hydration of potassium ions on the mica surface has a strong influence on the water Structure and solvation force response of confined water. In contrast to the disrupted hydrogen bond network observed for water confined between Mica Surfaces, water between silica surfaces retains its hydrogen bond network displaying bulklike structural features down to surface separations as small as 0.45 nm. Hydrogen bonding of all invariant contact water layer with the surface silanol groups aids in maintaining a constant number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule for the silica surfaces. As a consequence water depletion and rearrangement upon decreasing confinement is a strong function of the hydrophilic surface specificity, particularly at smaller separations. An oscillatory solvation force response is only observed for water confined between Silica surfaces, and bulklike features are observed for both Surfaces above a surface separation of about 1.2 nm. We evaluate and contrast the water density, dipole moment distributions, pi pair correlation functions, and solvation forces as a function of the surface separation.

This letter explores the structural behavior of nanocrystalline tin mono sulfide (SnS) structures with respect to temperature (100-600 K). These studies emphasize that the structural properties of SnS nanocrystalline structures depend on the surrounding temperature. The lattice parameters of SnS nanocrystals slightly varied like their microstructures with the increase of temperature. These changes strongly influence the optical properties of SnS nanostructures. On the other hand, the structures exhibited higher strain (similar to 0.44%) than that of microstructured (0.3%) and bulk (0.12%) counterparts. The observed results are discussed under the light of existing concepts and reported.
