Aromatic aldehydes and aryl isocyanates do not react at room temperature. However, we have shown for the first time that in the presence of catalytic amounts of group(IV) n-butoxide, they undergo metathesis at room temperature to produce imines with the extrusion of carbon dioxide. The mechanism of action has been investigated by a study of stoichiometric reactions. The insertion of aryl isocyanates into the metal n-butoxide occurs very rapidly. Reaction of the insertion product with the aldehyde is responsible for the metathesis. Among the n-butoxides of group(IV) metals, Ti((OBu)-Bu-n)(4) (8aTi) was found to be more efficient than Zr((OBu)-Bu-n)(4) (8aZr) and Hf((OBu)-Bu-n)(4) (8aHf) in carrying out metathesis. The surprisingly large difference in the metathetic activity of these alkoxides has been probed computationally using model complexes Ti(OMe)(4) (8bTi), Zr(OMe)(4) (8bZr) and Hf(OMe)(4) (8bHf) at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory. These studies indicate that the insertion product formed by Zr and Hf are extremely stable compared to that formed by Ti. This makes subsequent reaction of Zr and Hf complexes unfavorable.

The insertion reactions of zirconium(IV) n-butoxide and titanium(IV) n-butoxide with a heterocumulene like carbodiimide, carbon dioxide or phenyl isocyanate are compared. Both give an intermediate which carries out metathesis at elevated temperatures by inserting a second heterocumulene in a head-to-head fashion. The intermediate metallacycle extrudes a new heterocumulene, different from the two that have inserted leading to metathesis. As the reaction is reversible, catalytic metathesis is feasible. In stoichiometric reactions heterocumulene insertion, metathesis and metathesis cum insertion products are observed. However, catalytic amounts of the metal alkoxide primarily led to metathesis products. It is shown that zirconium alkoxides promote catalytic metathesis (isocyanates, carbon dioxide) more efficiently than the corresponding titanium alkoxide. The difference in the metathetic activity of these alkoxides has been explained by a computational study using model complexes Ti(OMe)(4) (1bTi) and Zr(OMe)(4) (1bZr). The computation was carried out at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level of theory.

This thesis discusses two major topics: the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of bulky monomers and the radical-mediated hydrophosphonation of olefins. The research into the ROMP of bulky monomers is further divided into three chapters: wedge-shaped monomers, the alternating copolymerization of 1-methyloxanorbornene derivatives with cyclooctene, and the kinetic resolution polymerization of 1-methyloxanorbornene derivatives. The wedge-shaped monomers can be polymerized into diblock copolymers that possess photonic crystal properties. The alternating copolymerization of 1-methyloxanorbornene derivatives with cyclooctene is performed with > 90% alternation via two different routes: typical alternating copolymerization and a sequence editing approach. The kinetic resolution polymerization of these same 1-methyloxanorbornene monomers achieves only modest selectivity (S=4), but there is evidence that the growing polymer chain forms a helix that influences the selectivity of the resolution. The last topic is the radical-mediated hydrophosphonation of olefins. This synthetic method provides access to Wittig reagents that are capable of highly cis-selective olefinations of aldehydes.

The selectivity of I-hexene metathesis using WCI6 as catalyst was evaluated with a series of hydrosilane-compounds as cocatalysts: Ph3SiH, Ph2SiH2, PhSiH3 and polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS). The metathesis reaction is favored by the addition of promoters. When in the presence of WCl4(OAr)(2), OAr = 2,6-dichlorophenoxide, 2,6-difluorophenoxide, olefin metathesis occurs with good selectivity without the use of promoters. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The kinetics of the metathesis of 1-hexene using Re2O7/-Al_2O_3 as the catalyst were investigated under a variety of conditions. The experiments were carried out under high vacuum conditions. The product solutions were characterised by gas liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy. The initial kinetics of the metathesis of 1-hexene showed that the reaction was first order in the weight of the catalyst and second order in the concentration of 1-hexene. A kinetic scheme which correlated the experimental data with the metallocarbene chain mechanism postulated by Herisson and Chauvin and the kinetics of the reaction was explained using a model based on the Langmuir-Hinshelwood theory. The low conversion of 1-hexene to its products is due to termination reactions which most likely occur by the decomposition of the metallocyclobutane intermediate to produce a cyclopropane derivative and an inactive centre. The optimum temperature for the metathesis of 1-hexene over Re_2O_7/-Al2O3 is 45oC and above this temperature, the rate of metathesis decreases rapidly. Co-catalysts alter the active sites for metathesis so that the catalyst is more selective to the metathesis of 1-hexene. However, the regeneration of metathesis activity is much worse for promoted catalysts than for the unpromoted. The synthesis and metathesis of 4,4-dimethyl-2-allowbreak (9-decenyl)-1,3-oxazoline and 4,4-dimethyl-2-allowbreak (3-pentenyl)-1,3-oxazoline was attempted and the products were analysed by thin layer chromatography, infra-red, 13C and 1H nmr and mass spectroscopy. Obtaining the oxazolines in a good yield with high purity was difficult and consequently metathesis of the impure products did not occur.

The olefin metathesis reaction has found many applications in polymer synthesis and more recently in organic synthesis. The use of single component late metal olefin metathesis catalysts has expanded the scope of the reaction to many new applications and has allowed for detailed study of the catalytic species.

The metathesis of terminal olefins of different steric bulk, different geometry as well as electronically different para-substituted styrenes was studied with the ruthenium based metathesis initiators, trans-(PCy3)2Cl2Ru=CHR, of different carbene substituents. Increasing olefin bulk was found to slow the rate of reaction and trans internal olefins were found to be slower to react than cis internal olefins. The kinetic product of a11 reactions was found to be the alkylidene, rather than the methylidene, suggesting the intermediacy of a 2,4-metallacycle. The observed effects were used to explain the mechanism of ring opening cross metathesis and acyclic diene metathesis polymerization. No linear electronic effects were observed.

In studying the different carbene ligands, a series of ester-carbene complexes was synthesized. These complexes were found to be highly active for the metathesis of olefinic substrates, including acrylates and trisubstituted olefins. In addition, the estercarbene moiety is thermodynamically high in energy. As a result, these complexes react to ring-open cyclohexene by metathesis to alleviate the thermodynamic strain of the ester-carbene ligand. However, ester-carbene complexes were found to be thermolytically unstable in solution.

Thermolytic decomposition pathways were studied for several ruthenium-carbene based olefin metathesis catalysts. Substituted carbenes were found to decompose through bimolecular pathways while the unsubstituted carbene (the methylidene) was found to decompose unimolecularly. The stability of several derivatives of the bis-phosphine ruthenium based catalysts was studied for its implications to ring-closing metathesis. The reasons for the activity and stability of the different ruthenium-based catalysts is discussed.

The difference in catalyst activity and initiation is discussed for the bis-phosphine based and mixed N-heterocyclic carbene/phosphine based ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts. The mixed ligand catalysts initiate far slower than the bis-phosphine catalysts but are far more metathesis active. A scheme is proposed to explain the difference in reactivity between the two types of catalysts.

A series of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and nitriles of significant interest in the fragrance industry have been prepared using Grubbs' catalysts in cross-metathesis reactions of electron-deficient olefins (i.e., acrolein, crotonaldehyde, methacrolein, and acrylonitrile) with various 1-alkenes, including 1-decene, 1-octene, 1-hexene and 2-allyloxy-6-methylheptane. The latter is of particular interest, as it has not previously being used as a substrate in cross-metathesis reactions and allows access to valuable intermediates for the synthesis of new fragrances. Most reactions gave good selectivity of the desired CM product (>= 90%). Detailed optimisation and mechanistic studies have been performed on the cross-metathesis of acrolein with 1-decene. Recycling of the catalyst has been attempted using ionic liquids.
