In the present work, the physical and chemical characteristics of the fruit of the oily palm coming from the river basin of the Manitf (Region Loreto - Peru) were studied. Also, the fractionation of the palm oil and the interesterification of mixtures of palm oil/estearin was carried out. Physico- chemical properties of the crude oil and of the products obtained and fatty acids were analysed by gas chromatography The level of saturated fatty acids increased from 51,17% in the palm oil to 54,31% in the stearin. The best products for the food industry were the interesterified samples as they had melting points close to 37 degrees C.

Blends of canola oil (CO) and fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil (FHCSO), with 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40% FHCSO (w/w) were interesterified under the following conditions: 0.4% sodium methoxide, 500 rpm stirring, 100C, 20 min. The original and interesterified blends were examined for triacylglycerol composition, melting point, solid fat content (SFC) and consistency. Interesterification caused considerable rearrangement of triacylglycerol species, reduction of trisaturated triacylglycerol content and increase in disaturated-monounsaturated and monosaturated-diunsaturated triacylglycerols in all blends, resulting in lowering of respective melting points. The interesterified blends showed reduced SFC at all temperatures and more linear melting profiles if compared with the original blends. Consistency, expressed as yield value, significantly decreased after the reaction. Iso-solid curves indicated eutectic interactions for the original blends, which were eliminated after randomization. The 80:20, 75:25, 70:30 and 65:35 (w/w) CO: FHCSO interesterified blends showed characteristics which are appropriate for their application as soft margarines, spreads, fat for bakery/all-purpose shortenings, and icing shortenings, respectively. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Recently, a number of studies have suggested a direct relationship between trans isomers and increased risk of vascular disease. In response, many health organizations have recommended reducing consumption of foods containing trans fatty acids. In this connection, chemical interesterification has proven the main alternative for obtaining plastic fats that have low trans isomer content or are even trans isomer free. This work proposes to evaluate the chemical interesterification of binary blends of canola oil and fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil and the specific potential application of these interesterified blends in food products.

Blends of soybean oil (50) and fully hydrogenated soybean oil (FHSBO), with 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% FHSBO (w/w) content were interesterified under the following conditions: 0.4% sodium methoxide, 500 rpm stirring, 100 degrees C, 20 min. O-Acyl esters were prepared from salicylic acid and diflunisal by esterification with the appropriate acyl anhydride (in the presence of sulfuric acid at 80 degrees C) or acyl chloride (in the presence of pyridine at 0 degrees C). Synthesis, identification and characterization of these compounds is described. In vitro hydrolysis, solubility and protein binding studies of these O-acyl esters were performed. For the diflunisal esters, the melting points fell as the side chain was increased from ethyl to pentyl. The melting points showed no significant difference as the length of the side chain was increased from pentyl to heptyl. The aspirin analogues showed a similar trend, The relationship between solubility and carbon chain length agreed closely with that for the melting points with carbon chain length. In vitro non-enzymatic hydrolysis studies concluded that: (1) hydrolysis rate constants generally decreased with carbon chain length; (2) the diflunisal esters have shorter half lives compared with their salicylate counterparts; and (3) the in vitro hydrolysis of these compounds was retarded by the presence of bovine serum albumin. Protein binding experiments showed that the strength of binding of the aspirin and diflunisal analogues to bovine serum albumin increased with carbon chain length. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The principle that alloys are designed to accommodate the manufacture of goods made from them as much as the properties required of them in service has not been widely applied to pressed and sintered P/M aluminium alloys. Most commercial alloys made from mixed elemental blends are identical to standard wrought alloys. Alternatively, alloys can be designed systematically using the phase diagram characteristics of ideal liquid phase sintering systems. This requires consideration of the solubilities of the alloying elements in aluminium, the melting points of the elements, the eutectics they form with aluminium and the nature of the liquid phase. The relative diffusivities are also important. Here we show that Al-Sn, which closely follows these ideal characteristics, has a much stronger sintering response than either Al-Cu or Al-Zn, both of which have at least one non-ideal characteristic. n a recent paper we reported an experimental study of two N-alkylimidazolium salts. These ionic compounds exhibit liquid crystalline behaviour with melting points above 50 degrees C in bulk. However, if they are sheared, a (possibly non-equilibrium) lamellar phase forms at room temperature. Upon shearing a thin film of the material between microscope slides, textures were observed that are strikingly similar to liquid (wet) foams. The images obtained from polarising optical microscopy (POM) were found to share many of the known quantitative properties of a two-dimensional foam coarsening process. Here we report an experimental study of this foam using a shearing system coupled with POM. The structure and evolution of the foam are investigated through the image analysis of time sequences of micrographs obtained for well-controlled sets of physical parameters (sample thickness, shear rate and temperature). In particular, we find that there is a threshold shear rate below which no foam can form. Above this threshold, a steady-state foam pattern is obtained where the mean cell area generally decreases with increasing shear rate. Furthermore, the steady-state internal cell angles and distribution of the cell number of sides deviate from their equilibrium (i.e. zero-shear) values.

Os Líquidos Iónicos (LIs) são sais orgânicos constituídos exclusivamente por iões e possuem pontos de fusão inferiores a 100ºC. As suas propriedades únicas e o facto de ser possível ajustar as suas propriedades físicas, químicas e biológicas, de acordo com o objetivo pretendido, tornam esta classe de compostos, um grande objeto de estudo de inúmeros investigadores. Desde os inícios da sua aplicação até à atualidade, a investigação nesta área expandiu o seu raio de ação, estando já descrito o seu potencial como agentes antimicrobianos e, mais recentemente, como compostos farmacêuticos ativos. Atualmente muitas das suas aplicações são baseadas nas suas propriedades biológicas. Esta Tese teve como objetivo avaliar a influência que os LIs podem exercer a nível do crescimento bacteriano e estudar alternativas de combater a resistência bacteriana. Todos os LIs utilizados neste trabalho tinham como anião o ácido valpróico, sendo utilizados catiões orgânicos de amónio e de imidazólio. Foram utilizadas 4 bactérias e avaliou-se a atividade biológica e a respetiva taxa de crescimento. O estudo da sua atividade biológica foi feito através da determinação da Concentração Mínima Inibitória (CMI) e a análise das suas curvas de crescimentos na presença e ausência de composto. Com este trabalho foi possível verificar que dentro dos compostos em estudo, LIs derivados do valproato, o Valproato com o cetilperidínio [valp] [cetylpir] foi o que influenciou o crescimento de todas as bactérias estudadas. Este estudo demonstrou o potencial antibacteriano de alguns compostos, podendo desta forma vir a ser utilizados para fins farmacêuticos

In this work we intend to eliminate the idea that laboratory exercises seem like cookbooks. That is, exercises shall be presented as a problematic situation. Based on observation and experimentation, the students should determine the E-Z configuration of maleic and fumaric acids. The basis of this laboratory exercise is the acid-catalyzed isomerization of maleic acid to fumaric acid. Students are given the starting material, reagents and the experimental procedure. They are told that the starting material is a dicarboxylic acid containing a C=C double bond of formula C4H4O4. Students determine melting points, solubilities, acidity and chromatographic patterns for both the starting material and the product, so that a configuration of each acid can be proposed. This type of experiment yields excellent results, because the students are left to deduce that maleic acid is less stable than fumaric acid. Additionally, they conclude that maleic acid is the "Z" isomer and fumaric acid is the "E" isomer. Finally, this laboratory exercise allows the students to develop simultaneously their critical-thinking skills with the respective laboratory techniques and not to see chemistry as recipes to be followed.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effects of blending and chemical interesterification reactions on the softening and melting behavior of chicken fat, its stearin and medium chain triacylglycerols, and blends thereof in various ratios. Chemical interesterification is a promising alternative to the current processes of modifying the physical properties of fats. In the experimental design 7 samples corresponding to 7 different blend proportions were used. The results were represented in triangular diagrams. The addition of stearin influenced the softening and melting points. The mixture response surface methodology proved to be an extremely useful tool for the optimization of the fat mixtures.

The use of microwave in chemistry has known benefits over conventional heating methods, e.g. reduced reaction times, chemical yield improvement and the possibility if reducing or eliminating the use of organic solvents. We describe herein a procedure for the nitration of salicylaldehyde in water using a domestic microwave oven, which can be used as an experiment in the undergraduate chemistry laboratory. The experiment involves safe and rapid preparation and identification of the position isomers by thin layer chromatography and 1H NMR, or by their melting points.

Microwave synthesis is considered a breakthrough in the field of chemistry due to its benefits over conventional heating methods. We describe, for the first time, the total synthesis of phenytoin adapted for a microwave reactor, proposed as an experiment for undergraduate courses. When carried out with microwaves, the synthetic route provided phenytoin in 6 min and 30 s, while for conventional heating the total time was 170 min. The experiment also involves rapid identification of compounds by TLC, ¹H NMR, FT-IR and melting points determination.

Since their original discovery in 1914, ionic liquids (IL) have been widely examined and explored in chemistry due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Ionic liquids are collectively known as organic salts and have melting points of 100 °C or under. The molten salts most employed in analytical chemistry, including gas chromatography (GC), consist of an organic cation paired with an organic or inorganic anion. This class of materials exhibits negligible vapor pressure and may have their properties (e.g.thermal stability and selectivity) structurally tuned by imparting different moieties to the cation/anion. Currently, there are an estimated 1018possible combinations of IL. In this context, the prospection of highly selective IL-based stationary phases for gas-liquid chromatography has enabled high peak capacity and efficient separations of many critical pairs in complex samples. In this review, we present and discuss fundamental characteristics of ionic liquids and introduce important solvation models for gas-liquid systems. In addition, recent advances and applications of IL in conventional and multidimensional gas chromatography are outlined.

Synthesis, electronic, infrared, elemental micro analytical studies were carried on N-(benzothiazol-2-yl)trichloroethanamide [4] and N-(benzothiazol-2-yl)chloroethanamide [5]. They were also screened in vitro and in vivo for antibacterial activity. The results indicate that the compounds are very stable and that they show high antibacterial activities against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria tested. Both derivatives of 2-aminobenzothiazole were active against the multiresistant bacteria with IZD ranging from 9 -18 mm [5] and 9 - 20mm [4]. From the MIC results it is observed that the [5] derivative produced a better antibacterial activity than the [4] derivative. The lethal concentrations (LC50) of the compounds were also determined. Their solubilities and melting points were also determined.

Extensive studies have been initiated to generate enough data to register the methyl homologue (MBC-MIC, see List of Abbreviations, page 14) of benomyl (MBC-BIC) as a commercial product through a joint effort between the federal government and Canadian industry. The objective of this study, as part of the whole project, was to generate fundamental data on the physical properties of the series of benomyl homologues (MBC-MIC, MBC-EIC, MBC-PIC and MBC-BIC). These data include the half lives of these compounds in water at the pH range from 2 to 12; they ranged from 0.7 to 10. 1 hours. Standard solutions of these compounds in concentrated acid were found to be stable for at least two weeks, and in the case of MBC-MIC it was stable at least 1 month. Another major goal of this study was to determine the solubility of each compound in water at different pHs in the range of 1 to 12. The solubility of the compounds ranged from 0.6 jig/mL to 396 fig/mL. In addition, it was possible to prepare stable stock solutions at concentrations > 1 000 |ig/mL in concentrated nitric acid. Several aspects of analytical methods have been improved to accurately assess the solubility and rate of degradation of benomyl and its homologues in alkaline conditions. The determination of melting points was attempted but all compounds decomposed before melting.To complement the studies of the benomyl homologue series attempts were made to explore the presence of any relationships between the structures of the compounds and their properties. Although there were some exceptions, the compound's solubility decreased and half life increased as the molecular size increased from the methyl to the butyl analogue.
