Lt. Col. John Clark Papers, 1838-1851 [photocopy]

Lt. Col. John Clark (1787-1862) was born in Kingston, Upper Canada. In 1801 Clark became a private in the 1st regiment of the Lincoln Militia, serving under Ralfe Clench. By June 1812 he was promoted to lieutenant by Maj. Gen. Sir Isaac Brock. During the War of 1812 he served as lieutenant and adjutant for the Lincoln Militia flank company on the Niagara frontier under Col. William Claus, and was present at the surrender of the enemy at the battle of Queenston Heights. By 1838 the Lincoln Militia was being re-organized and Lt. Col John Clark was requested to lead the 5th Regiment, made up of men from both Grantham and Louth townships in Lincoln County. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1851?. Around this same time Clark bought from William May Jr. a house in Grantham Township. He was to call his home Walnut Dale Farm. John Clark also served as the customs collector for Port Dalhousie, and as a secretary in the Welland Canal Company. One hundred years later efforts by a local heritage group to save John Clark’s home failed, when the house was hit by arsonists. By this time the house had become known as the May-Clark-Seiler House. See RG 195 Anne Taylor Fonds for more information regarding the efforts of the heritage group to save this home. Clark died in 1862 at the age of 79 years and is buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery. John Clark’s daughter Catherine (mentioned in the diary portion of the papers) was married to William Morgan Eccles.

Anne Taylor Fonds

Anne Taylor was active in the St. Catharines arts community. She is married to Dr. Robert R. Taylor, a retired Brock University history professor. The fonds reflects her involvement in various local heritage and arts organizations. Heritage St. Catharines was active in raising public awareness of the value of heritage properties such as the May-Clark-Seiler house and the Port Dalhousie carousel. Anne Taylor currently resides in British Columbia.

Community mix, affordable housing and metropolitan planning strategy in Melbourne

Income segregation across Melbourne’s residential communities is widening, and at a pace faster than in some other Australian cities. The widening gap between Melbourne’s rich and poor communities raises fears about concentrations of poverty and social exclusion, particularly if the geography of these communities is such that they and their residents are increasingly isolated from urban services and employment centres. Social exclusion in our metropolitan areas and the government responses to it are commonly thought to be the proper domain of social and economic policy. The role of urban planning is typically neglected, yet it helps shape the economic opportunities available to communities in its attempts to influence the geographical location of urban services, infrastructure and jobs. Under the current metropolitan strategy ‘Melbourne 2030’ urban services and transport infrastructure are to be concentrated within Principal Activity Centres spread throughout the metropolitan area and it is the intention that lower-income households should have ready access to these activity centres. However, the Victorian state government has few housing policy instruments to achieve this goal and there are fears that community mix may suffer as house prices and rents are bid up in the vicinity of Principal Activity Centres, and lower-income households are displaced. But are these fears justified by the changing geography of house prices in the metropolitan region? This is the key research question addressed in this paper which examines whether the Victorian practice of placing reliance on the market to deliver affordable housing, while intervening to promote a more compact pattern of urban settlement, is effective.

Um estudo da ansiedade em alunos de graduação em psicologia

Cientistas do comportamento humano se preocupam cada vez mais com a relação entre as variáveis ansiedade e rendimento pessoal, nas diversas etapas de trabalho do homem moderno. Alguns acham que há uma relação inversa entre as referidas variáveis. Nesta pesquisa procura-se verificar se a variável ansiedade pode apresentar implicações na escolha da profissão de psicólogo ou se a escolha inadequada da profissão pode aumentar o nível de ansiedade de uma pessoa. São focalizadas algumas teorias da ansiedade e suas abordagens clássicas - com definições e modelos, na visão de renomados autores, entre os quais se destacam Kierjeggard, Freud, Rollo May, Clark Hull, Spielberger e outros -, incluindo-se também várias teorias na área de influência do rendimento escolar. Um estudo de campo foi realizado em diversas Universidades do Rio de Janeiro e Faculdades Isoladas de Psicologia, sendo o Inventário de Ansiedade de Spielberger, na sua tradução para o Português, efetuada por Ângela Biaggio, com a finalidade de responder às seguintes questões: o alto índice da ansiedade levaria os alunos a procurarem os cursos de Psicologia ou, ainda, os cursos tornariam os alunos mais ansiosos. Os instrumentos utilizados para medir a variável independente foram os questionários de Charles D. Spielberger , o IDATE (Inventário de Ansiedade Traço e Estudo) e os procedimentos estatísticos, usados, através do t-teste e da análise de variância. O estudo baseia-se, entre outros pontos, nas diferenças de escores apresentados entre alunos do primeiro semestre do curso de Psicologia, semestres intermediários, o último semestre do mesmo curso, e, ainda, uma comparação entre os escores de alunos do primeiro semestre do curso de Psicologia e do curso de Administração de Empresas. Os resultados obtidos não apresentaram diferenças significativas nos estados de ansiedade dos grupos submetidos ao experimento. O estudo mostrou que o aluno de Psicologia não é mais ansioso que o de Administração e o nível de ansiedade não aumenta durante o curso, concluindo-se que a procura pelo curso não implica em situações ansiosas.

Mobility, targeting and private school vouchers

This paper uses general equilibrium simulations to explore the role ofresidential mobility in shaping the impact of different types of private school voucher policies. In particular, general vouchers available to all residents in the state are compared to vouchers specifically targeted to either underprivileged school districts or underprivileged households. The simulations are derived from a three-community mo deI of low, middle and high income school districts (calibrated to New York data), where each school district is composed of multiple types of neighborhoods that may vary in house quality as well as the leveI of neighborhood extemalities. Households that differ in both their income and in the ability leveI of their children choose between school districts, between neighborhoods within their school district, and between the local public school or a menu of private school altematives.Local public school quality within a district is endogenously determined bya combination of the average peer quality of public school attending children as well as local property and state income tax supported spending. Financial support (above a required state minimum) is set by local majority rule. Finally, there exists the potential for a private school market composed of competitive schools that face production technologies similar to those ofpublic schools but who set tuition and admissions policies to maximize profits. In tbis model, it is demonstrated that school district targeted vouchers are similar in their impact to non-targeted vouchers but vastIy different from vouchers targeted to low income households. Furthermore, strong migration effects are shown to significantly improve the likely equity consequences of voucher programs.

Indenture acknowledging sale of property, Boston, 1753

Document acknowledges the sale of the late Samuel Clark's house and property to Alexander Hill. Samuel Clark's executor, James Clark, was required by law to sell the property to the highest bidder in order to pay the debts of the deceased.

Transcript (original spelling and grammar retained): By His Excellency Robert Prescott Esquire, Captain General and Governor in Chief in and over His Majestys Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, General and Commander in Chief of all His Majesty’s forces in the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and their several Dependencies and in the Island of Newfoundland &ca. &ca. &ca. I do hereby authorise and permit Thomas Clark of Queenstown in the County of Lincoln in the Province of Upper Canada merchant to take possession of all that Lot, piece and parcel of Land (being part of the land reserved by his Majesty for Military purposes) situate, lying and being at Queenstown in the Township of Newark, in the Home District in the said Province of Upper Canada, bounded and abutted as follows, that is to say beginning at the Distance of two Chains and ninety links from the South East End of his Majesty’s Store House, the said distance being measured along the Bank up Stream, thence South thirty nine degrees and an half West one Chain and fifty links thence south fifty degrees and an half East one Chain and thirty links thence North thirty nine degrees and an half East to the Edge of the Bank and from thence along the Bank to the place of beginning, containing thirty one perches and one hundred and twenty five square links and to occupy and hold the said Lot, piece and parcel of Land during pleasure subject nevertheless to the provisoes and Conditions herein after contained, that is to say.
