Rusia sufrió grandes cambios tras la desintegración de la URSS en 1991. No obstante, con la llegada de Vladimir Putin al poder, los intereses geoestratégicos de Rusia sobre el espacio postsoviético revivieron con nuevo ímpetu debido a una mayor cantidad de recursos a disposición del Estado. La República de Moldavia es un claro ejemplo del resurgir de la política exterior rusa hacia el espacio postsoviético, siendo incluso, una región clave en la lucha de la Federación Rusa por recuperar su zona de influencia.

The development of the private equity industry since the 2008 financial crisis

The private equity industry was experiencing a phenomenal boom at the turn of the century but collapsed abruptly in 2008 with the onset of the financial crisis. Considered one of the worst crises since the Great Depression of the 1930s, it had sent ripples around the world threatening the collapse of financial institutions and provoking a liquidity crunch followed by a huge downturn in economic activity and recession. Furthermore, the physiognomy of the financial landscape had considerably altered with banks retracting from the lending space, accompanied by a hardening of financial regulation that sought to better contain systemic risk. Given the new set of changes and challenges that had arisen from this period of financial turmoil, private equity found itself having to question current practices and methods of operation in order to adjust to the harsh realities of a new post-apocalyptic world. Consequently, this paper goes on to explore how the private equity business, management and operation model has evolved since the credit crunch with a specific focus on mature markets such as the United States and Europe. More specifically, this paper will aim to gather insights on the development of the industry since the crisis in Western Europe through a case study approach using as a base interviews with professionals working in the industry and those external to the sector but who have/have had considerable interaction with PE players from 2007 to the present.

Cloning and genetic characterization of Skb1: A novel regulator of Shk1 and mitosis in Schizosaccharomyces pombe

A partial skb1 gene was originally isolated in a yeast two-hybrid screen for Shk1-interacting polypeptides. Shk1 is one of two Schizosaccharomyces pombe p21Cdc42/Rac-activated kinases (PAKs) and is an essential component of the Ras1-dependent signal transduction pathways regulating cell morphology and mating responses in fission yeast. After cloning the skb1 gene we found the Skb1 gene product to be a novel, nonessential protein lacking homology to previously characterized proteins. However the identification of Skb1 homologs in C. elegans, S. cerevisiae, and H. sapiens reveals evolution has conserved the skb1 gene. Fission yeast cells carrying a deletion of skb1 exhibit a defect in cell size but not mating abilities. This defect is suppressed by high copy shk1. Fission yeast overexpressing skb1 were found to undergo cell division at a length 1.5X greater than normal. In the two-hybrid system, Skb1 interacts with a subdomain of the Shk1 regulatory region distinct from that with which Cdc42 interacts, and forms a ternary complex with Shk1 and Cdc42. By use of yeast genetics, we have established a role for Skb1 as a positive regulator of Shk1. Co-overexpression of shk1 with skb1 was found to suppress the morphology defect, but not the sterility, of ras1Δ fission yeast. Thus, the function of Skb1 is restricted to a morphology control pathway. We determined that Skb1 functions as a negative regulator of mitosis and does this through a Shk1-dependent mechanism. The mitotic regulatory function of Skb1 and Shk1 was also partially dependent upon Wee1, a direct negative regulator of the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdc2. The role for Skb1 and Shk1 as mitotic regulators is the first connection from a PAK protein to control of the cell cycle. Furthermore, Skb1 is the first non-Cdc42/Rac PAK modulator to be identified. ^
