This paper describes the development and solution of binary integer formulations for production scheduling problems in market-driven foundries. This industrial sector is comprised of small and mid-sized companies with little or no automation, working with diversified production, involving several different metal alloy specifications in small tailor-made product lots. The characteristics and constraints involved in a typical production environment at these industries challenge the formulation of mathematical programming models that can be computationally solved when considering real applications. However, despite the interest on the part of these industries in counting on effective methods for production scheduling, there are few studies available on the subject. The computational tests prove the robustness and feasibility of proposed models in situations analogous to those found in production scheduling at the analyzed industrial sector. Foundries can be found all over Brazil and they are very important to its economy. In 2008, a mixed integer-programming model for small market-driven foundries was published, attempting to minimize delivery delays. We undertook a study of that model. Here, we present a new approach based on the decomposition of the problem into two sub-problems: production planning of alloys and production planning of items. Both sub-problems are solved using a Lagrangian heuristic based on transferences. An important aspect of the proposed heuristic is its ability to take into account a secondary practice objective solution: the furnace waste. Computational tests show that the approach proposed here is able to generate good quality solutions that outperform prior results. Neueste Entwicklungen in Technologien für dezentrale Energieversorgungsstrukturen, erneuerbare Energien, Großhandelsenergiemarkt, Mini- und Mikronetze, verteilte Intelligenz, sowie Informations- und Datenübertragungstechnologien werden die zukünftige Energiewelt maßgeblich bestimmen. Die derzeitigen Forschungsbemühungen zur Vernutzung aller dieser Technologien bilden die Voraussetzungen für ein zukünftiges, intelligentes Stromnetz. Dieses neue Konzept gründet sich auf die folgenden Säulen: Die Versorgung erfolgt durch dezentrale Erzeugungsanlagen und nicht mehr durch große zentrale Erzeuger; die Steuerung beeinflusst nicht mehr allein die Versorgung sondern ermöglich eine auch aktive Führung des Bedarf; die Eingabeparameter des Systems sind nicht mehr nur mechanische oder elektrische Kenngrößen sondern auch Preissignale; die erneuerbaren Energieträger sind nicht mehr nur angeschlossen, sondern voll ins Energienetz integriert. Die vorgelegte Arbeit fügt sich in dieses neue Konzept des intelligenten Stromnetz ein. Da das zukünftige Stromnetz dezentral konfiguriert sein wird, ist eine Übergangsphase notwendig. Dieser Übergang benötigt Technologien, die alle diese neue Konzepte in die derzeitigen Stromnetze integrieren können. Diese Arbeit beweist, dass ein Mininetz in einem Netzabschnitt mittlerer Größe als netzschützende Element wirken kann. Hierfür wurde ein neues Energiemanagementsystem für Mininetze – das CMS (englisch: Cluster Management System) – entwickelt. Diese CMS funktioniert als eine von ökonomischorientierte Betriebsoptimierung und wirkt wie eine intelligente Last auf das System ein, reagierend auf Preissignale. Sobald wird durch eine Frequenzsenkung eine Überlastung des Systems bemerkt, ändert das Mininetz sein Verhalten und regelt seine Belastung, um die Stabilisierung des Hauptnetzes zu unterstützen. Die Wirksamkeit und die Realisierbarkeit des einwickelten Konzept wurde mit Hilfe von Simulationen und erfolgreichen Laborversuchen bewiesen.

A lot sizing and scheduling problem prevalent in small market-driven foundries is studied. There are two related decision levels: (I the furnace scheduling of metal alloy production, and (2) moulding machine planning which specifies the type and size of production lots. A mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation of the problem is proposed, but is impractical to solve in reasonable computing time for non-small instances. As a result, a faster relax-and-fix (RF) approach is developed that can also be used on a rolling horizon basis where only immediate-term schedules are implemented. As well as a MIP method to solve the basic RF approach, three variants of a local search method are also developed and tested using instances based on the literature. Finally, foundry-based tests with a real-order book resulted in a very substantial reduction of delivery delays and finished inventory, better use of capacity, and much faster schedule definition compared to the foundry`s own practice. Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) address environmental risks in supply chains and certification of environmental claims. Governments supporting EMSs have encouraged producers to respond to anticipated consumer environmental concerns. Attempts at implementing EMSs have rarely been in direct response to market demand but are usually farmer organisation driven – to forestall increased regulation. In Australia, consumer demand for foods produced to environmentally sustainable standards is minimal because consumers don’t believe these products offer special benefits. EMS implementation is expensive and onerous; and the products require a market premium. Food consumers have difficulty differentiating the terms organic, environmentally-friendly, and sustainably-produced in food labelling.

This paper presents a Bi-level Programming (BP) approach to solve the Transmission Network Expansion Planning (TNEP) problem. The proposed model is envisaged under a market environment and considers security constraints. The upper-level of the BP problem corresponds to the transmission planner which procures the minimization of the total investment and load shedding cost. This upper-level problem is constrained by a single lower-level optimization problem which models a market clearing mechanism that includes security constraints. Results on the Garver's 6-bus and IEEE 24-bus RTS test systems are presented and discussed. Finally, some conclusions are drawn. © 2011 IEEE.

Recent studies point to climate change being one of the long-term drivers of agricultural market uncertainty. To advance in the understanding of the influence of climate change on future agricultural market developments, we compare a reference scenario for 2030 with alternative simulation scenarios that differ regarding: (1) emission scenarios; (2) climate projections; and (3) the consideration of carbon fertilization effects. For each simulation scenario, the CAPRI model provides global and EU-wide impacts of climate change on agricultural markets. Results show that climate change would considerably affect agrifood markets up to 2030. Nevertheless, market-driven adaptation strategies (production intensification, trade adjustments) would soften the impact of yield shocks on supply and demand. As a result, regional changes in production would be lower than foreseen by other studies focused on supply effects.

During the last few decades, identifying and examining the characteristics of market-driven firms have been a dominant theme in strategic marketing research. It has been argued that market-driven firms are superior in their market sensing and customer linking capabilities, enabling market-driven firms to outperform their competitors. This paper reports the findings of a study that examines the role market-focused learning capability and marketing capability in innovation-based competitive strategy on sustainable competitive advantage. The findings indicate that entrepreneurship is an important factor in sustained competitive advantage (SCA) and while market-focused learning capability leads to higher degrees of innovation, marketing capability enables SCA. A review of the extant literature concludes that market-driven intangibles and innovations are increasingly considered to be the most critical firm-specific resources, but also finds a lack of elaboration of which types of these resources are most important. In this paper, we incorporate these observations into a conceptual model and link it to highly developed institutional settings for the model evaluation. From the point of view of firm revenue management, we can anticipate that performance advantages created through deployment of intellectual and relational capital in marketing and innovation are more likely to be superior. In essence, they constitute the integration of organisational intangibles both in cognitive and behavioural level to create an idiosyncratic combination for each firm. Our research findings show feasible paths for sharpening the edge of market-driven intangibles and innovations. We discuss the key results for research and practice.
