Marinas currently exist primarily to service recreational boats, and these vessels are a potential cause of both problems and opportunities in environmental management. Thus, on the one hand, destructive fuel and other pollutants may be expelled, boat wakes can cause littoral soil erosion, physical damage results from collisions with marine life, and litter and noise pollution occur in otherwise pristine habitat. Boats also provide access to otherwise inaccessible natural environments for educational and other management reasons. In this study, boat traffic at three large marinas located along the Queensland coastline has been field surveyed for introductory information. No attempt was made at this juncture to survey the behaviour of the boat crews and passengers (concerning actual destinations, activities on board, etc. or to survey the recreational boat industry. Such studies rely on boat registration records and personal questionnaires. Some other surveys relating to fishing draw on boat ramp surveys and direct submissions by recreational fishers; these provide some data on daily usage of boat ramps, but without particular attention to boats. We believe field observations of overall boat activities in the water are necessary for environmental management purposes. The aim of the survey was to provide information to help prioritize the potential impacts that boats’ activities have on the surrounding natural environment. Any impact by boats will be a product of their numbers, size, frequency of movement, carrying capacity and routes/destinations. The severity of impacts will dictate the appropriate management action.

A Tale of Two Marinas: Burnett Heads and Port of Bundaberg This exhibition showcases the work of 4th Year undergraduate Landscape Architecture and Civil and Environmental Engineering students in response to issues of sustainability in Burnett Heads and the Port of Bundaberg. The Burnett Heads & Port of Bundaberg project site, just north of Bargara, is a complex mix of port facilities, urban development, established residential and service areas, coastal conservation and agriculture. The project brief was to prepare a range of strategic planning and environmental management options for future urban and infrastructure development. 4th year undergraduate Landscape Architecture and Civil and Environmental Engineering students worked over one teaching semester with guidance from QUT academics and partner organisations to produce strategic planning, environmental management planning and design options for managing future growth in the area. The project process involved three visits to the site by QUT students and staff. The first visit at the project’s commencement included a formal briefing session with project partners the Burnett Mary Regional Group, Port of Brisbane Corporation, and Queensland Department of Local Government and Planning. Formal and informal community engagement facilitated by the Burnett Heads Progress Association also allowed students to gain some understanding of local values. A second visit mid-project involved a ‘Futures Workshop’ with students and community. This enabled the students to gain the benefit of local knowledge and experience in response to their work-in-progress, and to establish priorities for project completion. It strengthened the relationship between the community and the students. A final exhibition, ‘A Tale of Two Marinas’ was held at the Burnett Progress Hall just prior to completion of the project. The student work exhibited offers a diverse number of alternative options for the future urban development, infrastructure and environmental planning that the partner organisations have used for ongoing consultation.

Una población de peces oceánicos explotada por una pesquería, puede ser influenciada por un gran número de factores dentro del complejo sistema ecológico de que forma parte. De todos estos factores, solamente uno, la predación por el hombre, es susceptible de ser controlado o modificado en grado apreciable por la acción del hombre mismo. Cualquier administración o control de una pesquería, si tal cosa es siquiera posible, debe en consecuencia, ejercitarse a través de las actividades de los pescadores. Parece importante elucidar algunos de los principios básicos de los efectos de la pesca sobre una población de peces y, recíprocamente, el efecto de esa población en el volumen de la pesca, a fin de saber en qué circunstancías y de qué modo tal control a la acción de los pescadores puede influenciar los stocks y el rendimiento que de ellos se obtiene. Explora la percepción de las personas residentes en las comunidades costeras vinculadas a los espacios marinos protegidos en Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica y Panamá. Profundiza, a partir de estudios de caso y el análisis comparativo, los temas de gobernanza, derechos humanos y distribución justa y equitativa de beneficios derivados de la conservación. Los resultados destacan que los esfuerzos de conservación marina no han logrado establecer puentes que permitan satisfacer las necesidades sociales. Las comunidades han sido excluidas de los procesos de toma de decisiones, y los costos de la conservación han recaído en las pueblos costeros. Se plantean recomendaciones orientadas hacia el desarrollo de procesos de conservación marina y desarrollo local en aras de tender puentes en la búsqueda de formas y modelos de conservación marina que sean respetuosos de los derechos humanos y promuevan “el buen vivir” de las comunidades en territorios marino-costeros.
