Classical models of gravity gradient, solar radiation, aerodynamic and magnetic torques acting on a circular cylinder satellite. The magnitude of each such are compared with parameterization in terms of the dimensions of the satellite and its altitude in relation to the Earth's surface. Two different satellite data are considered. The results agree with the classical results and show that for altitude between 0 and 800 km the gravity gradient, aerodynamic and magnetic torques decrease with altitude while the solar radiation torque is almost independent of the altitude. The relative importance of these torques depends on the size, mass, moments of inertia and altitude of the satellite. The results can be useful to propagate the satellite attitude, to satellite missions analysis and to validate the analytical approaches. (C) 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. An analytical approach for spin-stabilized spacecraft attitude prediction is presented for the influence of the residual magnetic torques. Assuming an inclined dipole model for the Earth's magnetic field, an analytical averaging method is applied to obtain the mean residual torque every orbital period. The orbit mean anomaly is utilized to compute the average components of residual torque in the spacecraft body frame reference system. The theory is developed for time variations in the orbital elements, and non-circular orbits, giving rise to many curvature integrals. It is observed that the residual magnetic torque does not have component along the spin axis. The inclusion of this torque on the rotational motion differential equations of a spin stabilized spacecraft yields conditions to derive an analytical solution. The solution shows that residual torque does not affect the spin velocity magnitude, contributing only for the precession and the drift of the spin axis of the spacecraft. (c) 2005 COSPAR. A method for investigating the dynamics of atomic magnetic moments in current-carrying magnetic point contacts under bias is presented. This combines the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method for evaluating the current and the charge density with a description of the dynamics of the magnetization in terms of quasistatic thermally activated transitions between stationary configurations. This method is then implemented in a tight-binding (TB) model with parameters chosen to simulate the main features of the electronic structures of magnetic transition metals. We investigate the domain wall (DW) migration in magnetic monoatomic chains sandwiched between magnetic leads, and for realistic parameters find that collinear arrangement of the magnetic moments of the chain is always favorable. Several stationary magnetic configurations are identified, corresponding to a different number of Bloch walls in the chain and to a different current. The relative stability of these configurations depends on the geometrical details of the junction and on the bias; however, we predict transitions between different configurations with activation barriers of the order of a few tens of meV. Since different magnetic configurations are associated with different resistances, this suggests an intrinsic random telegraph noise at microwave frequencies in the I-V curves of magnetic atomic point contacts at room temperature. Finally, we investigate whether or not current-induced torques are conservative.

The purpose of this experiment was to assess the test-retest reliability of input-output parameters of the cortico-spinal pathway derived from transcranial magnetic (TMS) and electrical (TES) stimulation at rest and during muscle contraction. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle of eight individuals on three separate days. The intensity of TMS at rest was varied from 5% below threshold to the maximal output of the stimulator. During trials in which the muscle was active, TMS and TES intensities were selected that elicited MEPs of between 150 and 300 X at rest. MEPs were evoked while the participants exerted torques up to 50% of their maximum capacity. The relationship between MEP size and stimulus intensity at rest was sigmoidal (R-2 = 0.97). Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) ranged between 0.47 and 0.81 for the parameters of the sigmoid function. For the active trials, the slope and intercept of regression equations of MEP size on level of background contraction were obtained more reliably for TES (ICC = 0.63 and 0.78, respectively) than for TMS (ICC = 0.50 and 0.53, respectively), These results suggest that input-output parameters of the cortico-spinal pathway may be reliably obtained via transcranial stimulation during longitudinal investigations of cortico-spinal plasticity. Introduction: 3.0 Tesla MRI offers the potential to quantify the volume fraction and structural texture of cancellous bone, along with quantification of marrow composition, in a single non-invasive examination. This study describes our preliminary investigations to identify parameters which describe cancellous bone structure including the relationships between texture and volume fraction.

Key points • The clinical aims of MR spectroscopy (MRS) in seizure disorders are to help identify, localize and characterize epileptogenic foci. • Lateralizing MRS abnormalities in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) may be used clinically in combination with structural and T2 MRI measurements together with other techniques such as EEG, PET and SPECT. • Characteristic metabolite abnormalities are decreased N-acetylaspartate (NAA) with increased choline (Cho) and myoinositol (mI) (short-echo time). • Contralateral metabolite abnormalities are frequently seen in TLE, but are of uncertain significance. • In extra-temporal epilepsy, metabolite abnormalities may be seen where MR imaging (MRI) is normal; but may not be sufficiently localized to be useful clinically. • MRS may help to characterize epileptogenic lesions visible on MRI (aggressive vs. indolent neoplastic, dysplasia). • Spectral editing techniques are required to evaluate specific epilepsy-relevant metabolites (e.g. -aminobutyric acid (GABA)), which may be useful in drug development and evaluation. • MRS with phosphorus (31P) and other nuclei probe metabolism of epilepsy, but are less useful clinically. • There is potential for assessing the of drug mode of action and efficacy through 13C carbon metabolite measurements, while changes in sodium homeostasis resulting from seizure activity may be detected with 23Na MRS.
