Nanocrystalline Fe powders were synthesized by transmetallation reaction and embedded in silica to form Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite. Thermomagnetic study of the as-prepared Fe sample indicates the presence of Fe3O4 and Fe particles. Oxidation studies of Fe and Fe-SiO2 show an increased thermal stability of Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite over pure Fe. The Fe-SiO2 shows an enhanced oxidation temperature (i.e., 780 K) and a maximum saturation magnetization value of (135 emu/g) with 64 wt.% of Fe content in silica. Electrical and dielectric behaviour of the Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite has been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. Low frequency ac conductivity and dielectric constants were found to be influenced by desorptions of chemisorbed moisture. High saturation magnetization, thermal stability, frequency-dependent conductivity and low power loss make Fe-silica a promising material for high frequency applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Electrical and magnetic properties of several oxide systems of K2NiF4 structure have been compared to those of the corresponding perovskites. Members of the La1−xSr1+xCoO4 system are all semiconductors with a high activation energy for conduction unlike La1−xSrxCoO3 (x ≥ 0.3) which is metallic; the latter oxides are ferromagnetic. La0.5Sr1.5CoO4 shows a magnetization of 0.5 μB at 0 K (compared to 1.5 μB of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3), but the high-temperature susceptibilities of the two systems are comparable. In SrO · (La0.5Sr0.5MnO3)n, both magnetization and electrical conductivity increase with the increase in n approaching the value of the perovskite La0.5Sr0.5MnO3. LaSrMn0.5Ni0.5(Co0.5)O4 shows no evidence of long-range ferromagnetic ordering unlike the perovskite LaMn0.5Ni0.5(Co0.5)O3; high-temperature susceptibility behavior of these two insulating systems is, however, similar. LaSr1−xBaxNiO4 exhibits high electrical resistivity with the resistivity increasing proportionately with the magnetic susceptibility (note that LaNiO3 is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal). High-temperature susceptibility of LaSrNiO4 and LaNiO3 are comparable. Susceptibility measurements show no evidence for long-range ordering in LaSrFe1−xNixO4 unlike in LaFe1−xNixO3 (x ≤ 0.35) and the electrical resistivity of the former is considerably higher. Electrical resistivity of Sr2RuO4 is more than an order of magnitude higher than that of SrRuO3. Some generalizations of the properties of two- and three-dimensional oxide systems have emerged from these experimental observations.

CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were prepared by solution combustion method. The nanoparticle are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PXRD reveals single phase, cubic spinel structure with Fd (3) over barm (227) space group. SEM micrograph shows the particles are agglomerated and porous in nature. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal g=2.150 and is attributed to super exchange between Fe3+ and Co2+. Magnetization values of CoFe2O4 nanoparticle are lower when compared to the literature values of bulk samples. This can be attributed to the surface spin canting due to large surface-to-volume ratio for a nanoscale system. The variation of dielectric constant, dielectric loss, loss tangent and AC conductivity of as-synthesized nano CoFe2O4 particles at room temperature as a function of frequency has been studied. The magnetic and dielectric properties of the samples show that they are suitable for electronic and biomedical applications.

SrCrxFe12-xO19 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9) hexaferrites were prepared by a microwave-hydrothermal method and subsequently sintered at 950 degrees C for 90 min using the microwave sintering method. The results show that, with increasing Cr3+ content, the lattice parameters changed anisotropically. The average grain sizes of sintered samples were in the range of 280 nm to 660 nm. The saturation magnetization systematically decreased with increasing Cr3+ doping, but the coercivity values increased. The electrical resistivity (log rho) decreased linearly with increasing temperature up to a certain temperature known as the transition temperature (T-c), and T-c decreased with further increase (x>0.5) of the Cr3+ content. This decrease in log rho and the activation energy (E-g) is due to electron hopping and occupancy of doped ions at different lattice sites. We found that the dielectric constant and dielectric loss for all the samples decreased with the Cr3+ content. The structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of Cr3+-doped SrFe12O19 hexaferrites have thus been investigated.

A series of multiferroic materials with the compositional formula, Tb1 - xDyxMnO3 (where x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were prepared by the sol gel method. After characterizing the samples structurally, a systematic investigation of specific heat, magnetization and dielectric properties over the temperature range, 4-300 K, was undertaken. Based on these studies, it was found that all the samples exhibit a transition at 40 K and the observed behavior may be attributed to the ordering of Mn3+ ions. Further, all the five samples are found to exhibit a ferroelectric transition in the temperature range 20-24 K. Finally, yet another transition was also exhibited by all the samples at temperatures below 10 K and is attributed to the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering of rare-earth ionic moments. The magnetic entropy of all the samples was also computed with the help of their heat capacity data. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the results of crystal structure, magnetization and resistivity measurements of Bi doped LaVO3. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that if doping Bi in the La site is less than ten percent, the crystal structure of La1-xBixVO3 remains unchanged and its symmetry is orthorhombic. However, for higher Bi doping (>10%) composite compounds are found where the XRD patterns are characterized by two phases: LaVO3+V2O3. Energy-dispersive analysis of the x-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) results are used to find a proper atomic percentage of all samples. The temperature dependence of the mass magnetization of pure and single phase doped samples have transition temperatures from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic region at TN=140 K. This measurement for bi-phasic samples indicates two transition temperatures, at TN=140 K (LaVO3) and TN=170 K (V2O3). The temperature dependence of resistivity reveals semiconducting behavior for all samples. Activation energy values for pure and doped samples are extracted by fitting resistivity versus temperature data in the framework of thermal activation process.

Fine particles of lithium ferrite were synthesized by the sol-gel method. By subsequent heat treatment at different temperatures, lithium ferrites of different grain sizes were prepared. A structural characterization of all the samples was conducted by the x-ray diffraction technique. A grain size of around 12 nm was observed for Li0.5Fe2.5O4 obtained through the sol-gel method. Magnetic properties of lithium ferrite nanoparticles with grain size ranging from 12 to 32 nm were studied. Magnetization measurements showed that Li0.5Fe2.5O4 fine particles exhibit a deviation from the predicted magnetic behaviour. The as-prepared sample of lithium ferrite showed a maximum saturation magnetization of 75 emu g−1. Variation of coercivity is attributed to the transition from multi-domain to single domain nature. Dielectric permittivity and ac conductivity of all the samples were evaluated as a function of frequency, temperature and grain size. Variation of permittivity and ac conductivity with frequency reveals that the dispersion is due to the Maxwell–Wagner type interfacial polarization

The purpose of this experiment was to assess the test-retest reliability of input-output parameters of the cortico-spinal pathway derived from transcranial magnetic (TMS) and electrical (TES) stimulation at rest and during muscle contraction. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle of eight individuals on three separate days. The intensity of TMS at rest was varied from 5% below threshold to the maximal output of the stimulator. During trials in which the muscle was active, TMS and TES intensities were selected that elicited MEPs of between 150 and 300 X at rest. MEPs were evoked while the participants exerted torques up to 50% of their maximum capacity. The relationship between MEP size and stimulus intensity at rest was sigmoidal (R-2 = 0.97). Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) ranged between 0.47 and 0.81 for the parameters of the sigmoid function. For the active trials, the slope and intercept of regression equations of MEP size on level of background contraction were obtained more reliably for TES (ICC = 0.63 and 0.78, respectively) than for TMS (ICC = 0.50 and 0.53, respectively), These results suggest that input-output parameters of the cortico-spinal pathway may be reliably obtained via transcranial stimulation during longitudinal investigations of cortico-spinal plasticity. We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependent structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of oriented La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 by Pulsed Laser Deposition. We observe that these films undergo a reduction in Curie temperature (T-c) with a decrease in film thickness, and it is found to be primarily caused by the finite size effect since the finite scaling law [T-c(infinity) T-c(t)/T-c(infinity) = (c/t)lambda holds good over the studied thickness range. We rule out the contribution from the strain induced suppression of Curie temperature with decreasing film thickness since all the films exhibit a constant out of plane tensile strain (0.5%) irrespective of their varying thickness. However, we observe that the coercivity of the films is an order of magnitude higher than that of the bulk due to the tensile strain. In addition, we also observe an increase in the magneto resistance peak and a decrease in coercivity and electrical resistivity with an increase in film thickness. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Investigations on thin films that started decades back due to scientific curiosity in the properties of a two-dimensional solid, has developed into a leading research field in recent years due to the ever expanding applications of the thin films in the fann of a variety of active and passive microminiaturized components and devices, solar cells, radiation sowces and detectors, magnetic memory devices, interference filters, refection and antireflection coatings etc. [1]. The recent environment and energy resource concerns have aroused an enonnous interest in the study of materials in thin film form suitable for renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic devices. Recognition of the immense potential applications of the chalcopyrites that can fonn homojunctions or heterojunctions for solar cell fabrication has attracted many researchers to extensive and intense research on them. In this thesis, we have started with studies performed on CuInSe, thin films, a technologically well recognized compound belonging to the l•ill-VI family of semiconductors and have riveted on investigations on the preparation and characterization of compoWlds Culn3Se5. Culn5Seg and CuIn7Se12, an interesting group of compounds related to CuInSe2 called Ordered Vacancy Compounds, having promising applications in photovoltaic devices. A pioneering work attempted on preparing and characterizing the compound Culn7Sel2 is detailed in the chapters on OVC's. Investigation on valence band splitting in avc's have also been attempted for the first time and included as the last chapter in the thesis. Some of the salient features of the chalcopyrite c.ompounds are given in the next section .of this introductory chapter.

The linear isomer of dodecylbenzene (DDB), 1-phenyldodecane, was aged at temperatures of 105 and 135 degrees C in air and the resultant products were analyzed using a range of analytical techniques. On ageing, the 1-phenyldodecane darkened, the acid number, dielectric loss and water content increased and significant oxidation peaks were detected in the infrared spectrum. When aged in the presence of copper, a characteristic peak at 680 nm was also detected by UV/visible spectroscopy but, compared with previous studies of a cable-grade DDB, the strength of this peak was much increased and no appreciable precipitate formation occurred. At the same time, very high values of dielectric loss were recorded. On ageing in the absence of copper, an unusually strong infrared carbonyl band was seen, which correlates well with the detection of dodecanophenone by gas chromatography / mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It was therefore concluded that the ageing process proceeds via the initial production of aromatic ketones, which may then be further oxidized to carboxylic acids. In the presence of copper, these oxidation products are present in lower quantities, most of these oxidation products being combined with the copper present in the oil to give copper carboxylates. The behavior is described in terms of a complex autoxidation mechanism, in which copper acts as both an oxidizing and a reducing agent, depending on its oxidation state and, in particular, promotes elimination via the oxidation of intermediate alkyl radical species to carbocations.

A new family of vanadium-substituted chromium sulfides (VxCr2-xS3, 0 < x < 2) has been prepared and characterized by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient measurements. Vanadium substitution leads to a single-phase region with a rhombohedral Cr2S3 structure over the composition range 0.0 < x e 0.75, while at higher vanadium contents (1.6 e x < 2.0) a second single-phase region, in which materials adopt a cation-deficient Cr3S4 structure, is observed. Materials with the Cr2S3 structure all exhibit semiconducting behavior. However, both transport and magnetic properties indicate an increasing degree of electron delocalization with increasing vanadium content in this compositional region. Materials that adopt a Cr3S4-type structure exhibit metallic behavior. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal that all materials undergo a magnetic ordering transition at temperatures in the range 90–118 K. Low-temperature magnetization data suggest that this involves a transition to a ferrimagnetic state.
Electromagnetic, rock magnetic, and geochemical properties of surficial sediments in Eckernförde Bay
Resumo:
Submarine groundwater discharge in coastal settings can massively modify the hydraulic and geochemical conditions of the seafloor. Resulting local anomalies in the morphology and physical properties of surface sediments are usually explored with seismo-acoustic imaging techniques. Controlled source electromagnetic imaging offers an innovative dual approach to seep characterization by its ability to detect pore-water electrical conductivity, hence salinity, as well as sediment magnetic susceptibility, hence preservation or diagenetic alteration of iron oxides. The newly developed electromagnetic (EM) profiler Neridis II successfully realized this concept for a first time with a high-resolution survey of freshwater seeps in Eckernförde Bay (SW Baltic Sea). We demonstrate that EM profiling, complemented and validated by acoustic as well as sample-based rock magnetic and geochemical methods, can create a crisp and revealing fingerprint image of freshwater seepage and related reductive alteration of near-surface sediments. Our findings imply that (1) freshwater penetrates the pore space of Holocene mud sediments by both diffuse and focused advection, (2) pockmarks are marked by focused freshwater seepage, underlying sand highs, reduced mud thickness, higher porosity, fining of grain size, and anoxic conditions, (3) depletion of Fe oxides, especially magnetite, is more pervasive within pockmarks due to higher concentrations of organic and sulfidic reaction partners, and (4) freshwater advection reduces sediment magnetic susceptibility by a combination of pore-water injection (dilution) and magnetite reduction (depletion). The conductivity vs. susceptibility biplot resolves subtle lateral litho- and hydrofacies variations.
