Conventionally two-dimensional NMR spectra are recorded in the absolute-intensity mode (1-4). It has recently been demonstrated that absorption-mode 2D spectra have much higher resolution and are the preferred mode of presentation, especially for 2D spectra of biomolecules (5-7). Indeed, any experimental scheme which yields phasemixed lineshapes is subject to modification to yield pure-phase spectra, even at the expense of intensity and anomalous multiplet structure (8-10). For this purpose two types of filters are already known: the z filter (9, 20) and the purging pulse (8, 10). In this note, we propose a 45” pulse pair as a filter for obtaining pure-phase 2D spectra, mainly for experiments in which the above filters do not yield pure-phase spectra.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been employed to investigate oxides of second- and third-row transition metals, including those of rare earths. Systematics in the spin—orbit splittings and binding energies of core levels of the metals are described. In most of the cases studied, the dependence of the spin—orbit splittings on the atomic number Z is given by the relation ΔE = a(Z - Z0)4, where a is the quantum defect parameter and Z0 is the effective screening. Core-level binding energies are found to increase with the oxidation state of the metal. Most of the core-level binding energies are related to the atomic number Z by the expression E = x(Z - Z0)2, giving rise to linear plots of ln E versus ln Z. Specific features of individual oxides, with respect to satellites, multiplet structure, configuration mixing, and other properties are also discussed. The spectra of PrO2, Pr6O11, TbO2 and Tb4O7 are reported for the first time.

We give a list of all possible schemes for performing amino acid and codon assignments in algebraic models for the genetic code, which are consistent with a few simple symmetry principles, in accordance with the spirit of the algebraic approach to the evolution of the genetic code proposed by Hornos and Hornos. Our results are complete in the sense of covering all the algebraic models that arise within this approach, whether based on Lie groups/Lie algebras, on Lie superalgebras or on finite groups.

We investigate the possibility of interpreting the degeneracy of the genetic code, i.e., the feature that different codons (base triplets) of DNA are transcribed into the same amino acid, as the result of a symmetry breaking process, in the context of finite groups. In the first part of this paper, we give the complete list of all codon representations (64-dimensional irreducible representations) of simple finite groups and their satellites (central extensions and extensions by outer automorphisms). In the second part, we analyze the branching rules for the codon representations found in the first part by computational methods, using a software package for computational group theory. The final result is a complete classification of the possible schemes, based on finite simple groups, that reproduce the multiplet structure of the genetic code. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Mathematical models, as instruments for understanding the workings of nature, are a traditional tool of physics, but they also play an ever increasing role in biology - in the description of fundamental processes as well as that of complex systems. In this review, the authors discuss two examples of the application of group theoretical methods, which constitute the mathematical discipline for a quantitative description of the idea of symmetry, to genetics. The first one appears, in the form of a pseudo-orthogonal (Lorentz like) symmetry, in the stochastic modelling of what may be regarded as the simplest possible example of a genetic network and, hopefully, a building block for more complicated ones: a single self-interacting or externally regulated gene with only two possible states: ` on` and ` off`. The second is the algebraic approach to the evolution of the genetic code, according to which the current code results from a dynamical symmetry breaking process, starting out from an initial state of complete symmetry and ending in the presently observed final state of low symmetry. In both cases, symmetry plays a decisive role: in the first, it is a characteristic feature of the dynamics of the gene switch and its decay to equilibrium, whereas in the second, it provides the guidelines for the evolution of the coding rules.

Signal resolution in H NMR is limited primarily by multiplet structure. Recent advances in pure shift NMR, in which the effects of homonuclear couplings are suppressed, have allowed this limitation to be circumvented in 1D NMR, gaining almost an order of magnitude in spectral resolution. Here for the first time an experiment is demonstrated that suppresses multiplet structure in both domains of a homonuclear two-dimensional spectrum. The principle is demonstrated for the TOCSY experiment, generating a chemical shift correlation map in which a single peak is seen for each coupled relationship, but the principle is general and readily extensible to other homonuclear correlation experiments. Such spectra greatly simplify manual spectral analysis and should be well-suited to automated methods for structure elucidation. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

We investigate for very general cases the multiplet and fine structure splitting of muonelectron atoms arising from the coupling of the electron and muon angular momenta, including the effect of the Breit operator plus the electron state-dependent screening. Although many conditions have to be fulfilled simultaneously to observe these effeets, it should be possible to measure them in the 6h- 5g muonic transition in the Sn region.

We investigate the evolution of electronic structure with dimensionality (d) of Ni-O-Ni connectivity in divalent nickelates, NiO (3-d), La2NiO4, Pr2NiO4 (2-d), Y2BaNiO5 (1-d) and Lu2BaNi5 (0-d), by analyzing the valence band and the Ni 2p core-level photoemission spectra in conjunction with detailed many-body calculations including full multiplet interactions. Experimental results exhibit a reduction in the intensity of correlation-induced satellite features with decreasing dimensionality. The calculations based on the cluster model, but evaluating both Ni 3d and O 2p related photoemission processes on the same footing, provide a consistent description of both valence-band and core-level spectra in terms of various interaction strengths. While the correlation-induced satellite features in NiO is dominated by poorly screened d(8) states as described in the existing literature, we find that the satellite features in the nickelates with lower dimensional Ni-O-Ni connectivity are in fact dominated by the over-screened d(10)L(2) states. It is found that the changing electronic structure with the dimensionality is primarily driven by two factors: (i) a suppression of the nonlocal contribution to screening; and (ii) a systematic decrease of the charge-transfer energy Delta driven by changes in the Madelung potential. X-ray Raman scattering and x-ray emission spectroscopies were used to study the electronic properties and phase transitions in several condensed matter systems. The experimental work, carried out at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, was complemented by theoretical calculations of the x-ray spectra and of the electronic structure. The electronic structure of MgB2 at the Fermi level is dominated by the boron σ and π bands. The high density of states provided by these bands is the key feature of the electronic structure contributing to the high critical temperature of superconductivity in MgB2. The electronic structure of MgB2 can be modified by atomic substitutions, which introduce extra electrons or holes into the bands. X ray Raman scattering was used to probe the interesting σ and π band hole states in pure and aluminum substituted MgB2. A method for determining the final state density of electron states from experimental x-ray Raman scattering spectra was examined and applied to the experimental data on both pure MgB2 and on Mg(0.83)Al(0.17)B2. The extracted final state density of electron states for the pure and aluminum substituted samples revealed clear substitution induced changes in the σ and π bands. The experimental work was supported by theoretical calculations of the electronic structure and x-ray Raman spectra. X-ray emission at the metal Kβ line was applied to the studies of pressure and temperature induced spin state transitions in transition metal oxides. The experimental studies were complemented by cluster multiplet calculations of the electronic structure and emission spectra. In LaCoO3 evidence for the appearance of an intermediate spin state was found and the presence of a pressure induced spin transition was confirmed. Pressure induced changes in the electronic structure of transition metal monoxides were studied experimentally and were analyzed using the cluster multiplet approach. The effects of hybridization, bandwidth and crystal field splitting in stabilizing the high pressure spin state were discussed. Emission spectroscopy at the Kβ line was also applied to FeCO3 and a pressure induced iron spin state transition was discovered.

The mixed double-decker Eu\[Pc(15C5)4](TPP) (1) was obtained by base-catalysed tetramerisation of 4,5-dicyanobenzo-15-crown-5 using the half-sandwich complex Eu(TPP)(acac) (acac = acetylacetonate), generated in situ, as the template. For comparative studies, the mixed triple-decker complexes Eu2\[Pc(15C5)4](TPP)2 (2) and Eu2\[Pc(15C5)4]2(TPP) (3) were also synthesised by the raise-by-one-story method. These mixed ring sandwich complexes were characterised by various spectroscopic methods. Up to four one-electron oxidations and two one-electron reductions were revealed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). As shown by electronic absorption and infrared spectroscopy, supramolecular dimers (SM1 and SM3) were formed from the corresponding double-decker 1 and triple-decker 3 in the presence of potassium ions in MeOH/CHCl3.
