The MgAl2O4 ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state ceramic route and the dielectric properties studied in the microwave frequency region (3–13 GHz). The phase purity and crystal structure were identified using the X-ray diffraction technique. The MgAl2O4 spinel ceramics show interesting microwave dielectric properties (εr = 8.75, Qux f = 68 900 GHz (loss tangent = 0.00017 at 12.3 GHz), τf =−75 ppm/◦C). The MgAl2O4 has high negative τf, which precludes its immediate use in practical applications. Hence the microwave dielectric properties of MgAl2O4 spinels were tailored by adding different mole fractions of TiO2. The εr and Q factor of the mixed phases were increased with the molar addition of TiO2 into the spinel to form mixtures based on (1−x)MgAl2O4-xTiO2 (x = 0.0−1.0). For x = 0.25 in (1−x)MgAl2O4-xTiO2, the microwave quality factor reaches a maximum value of Qux f = 105 400 GHz (loss tangent = 0.00007 at 7.5 GHz) where εr and τf are 11.035 and −12 ppm/◦C, respectively. The microwave dielectric properties of the newly developed 0.75MgAl2O4-0.25TiO2 dielectric is superior to several commercially available low loss dielectric substrates.

The fabrication and characterization of micromachined reduced-height air-filled rectangular waveguide components suitable for integration is reported in this paper. The lithographic technique used permits structures with heights of up to 100 μm to be successfully constructed in a repeatable manner. Waveguide S-parameter measurements at frequencies between 75-110 GHz using a vector network analyzer demonstrate low loss propagation in the TE10 mode reaching 0.2 dB per wavelength. Scanning electron microscope photographs of conventional and micromachined waveguides show that the fabrication technique can provide a superior surface finish than possible with commercially available components. In order to circumvent problems in efficiently coupling free-space propagating beams to the reduced-height G-band waveguides, as well as to characterize them using quasi-optical techniques, a novel integrated micromachined slotted horn antenna has been designed and fabricated, E-, H-, and D-plane far-field antenna pattern measurements at different frequencies using a quasi-optical setup show that the fabricated structures are optimized for 180-GHz operation with an E-plane half-power beamwidth of 32° elevated 35° above the substrate, a symmetrical H-plane pattern with a half-power beamwidth of 23° and a maximum D-plane cross-polar level of -33 dB. Far-field pattern simulations using HFSS show good agreement with experimental results.

A novel technique for micro-machining millimeter and submillimeter-wave rectangular waveguide components is reported. These are fabricated in two halves which simply snap together, utilizing locating pins and holes, and are physically robust, and cheap, and easy to manufacture. In addition, S-parameter measurements on these structures are reported for the first time and display lower loss than previously reported micro-machined rectangular waveguides.

We propose a slow-wave MEMS phase shifter that can be fabricated using the CMOS back-end and an additional maskless post-process etch. The tunable phase shifter concept is formed by a conventional slow-wave transmission line. The metallic ribbons that form the patterned floating shield of this type of structure are released to allow motion when a control voltage is applied, which changes the characteristic impedance and the phase velocity. For this device a quality factor greater than 40 can be maintained, resulting in a figure of merit on the order of 0.7 dB/360 degrees and a total area smaller than 0.14 mm(2) for a 60-GHz working frequency. The Ph.D. thesis describes the simulations of different microwave links from the transmitter to the receiver intermediate-frequency ports, by means of a rigorous circuit-level nonlinear analysis approach coupled with the electromagnetic characterization of the transmitter and receiver front ends. This includes a full electromagnetic computation of the radiated far field which is used to establish the connection between transmitter and receiver. Digitally modulated radio-frequency drive is treated by a modulation-oriented harmonic-balance method based on Krylov-subspace model-order reduction to allow the handling of large-size front ends. Different examples of links have been presented: an End-to-End link simulated by making use of an artificial neural network model; the latter allows a fast computation of the link itself when driven by long sequences of the order of millions of samples. In this way a meaningful evaluation of such link performance aspects as the bit error rate becomes possible at the circuit level. Subsequently, a work focused on the co-simulation an entire link including a realistic simulation of the radio channel has been presented. The channel has been characterized by means of a deterministic approach, such as Ray Tracing technique. Then, a 2x2 multiple-input multiple-output antenna link has been simulated; in this work near-field and far-field coupling between radiating elements, as well as the environment factors, has been rigorously taken into account. Finally, within the scope to simulate an entire ultra-wideband link, the transmitting side of an ultrawideband link has been designed, and an interesting Front-End co-design technique application has been setup.

The goal of the thesis was to compare Galactic and extragalactic star-forming environments, to understand whether we can derive scaling relations for the extragalactic star formation from our understanding of the Galactic star formation; and to analyze the effect of the angular resolution of the observations and the molecular tracer used in extragalactic studies. It is therefore necessary to perform observations at the same linear resolution in both cases. With this in mind we have started a program aimed at comparing properties of mini-starburst regions in our Galaxy and starbursts in nearby galaxies at similar linear resolutions.

Heterodyne receivers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelength are widely used for radiometric spectral line observations for atmospheric remote sensing or radio astronomy. The quantitative analysis of such observations requires an accurate knowledge of the mixers's sideband ratio. In addition, its potential sensitivity to spurious harmonics needs to be well understood. In this paper, we discuss a measurement technique for these receiver characteristics, which is based on a scanning Martin Puplett Interferometer used in conjunction with a wide band digital autocorrelation spectrometer for the analysis of the intermediate frequency band. We present measurement results of different double sideband and sideband separating mixers, which were developed for the proposed 340GHz multi-beam limb sounder STEAMR.

Ice cores provide a robust reconstruction of past climate. However, development of timescales by annual-layer counting, essential to detailed climate reconstruction and interpretation, on ice cores collected at low-accumulation sites or in regions of compressed ice, is problematic due to closely spaced layers. Ice-core analysis by laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) provides sub-millimeter-scale sampling resolution (on the order of 100μm in this study) and the low detection limits (ng L–1) necessary to measure the chemical constituents preserved in ice cores. We present a newly developed cryocell that can hold a 1m long section of ice core, and an alternative strategy for calibration. Using ice-core samples from central Greenland, we demonstrate the repeatability of multiple ablation passes, highlight the improved sampling resolution, verify the calibration technique and identify annual layers in the chemical profile in a deep section of an ice core where annual layers have not previously been identified using chemistry. In addition, using sections of cores from the Swiss/Italian Alps we illustrate the relationship between Ca, Na and Fe and particle concentration and conductivity, and validate the LA-ICP-MS Ca profile through a direct comparison with continuous flow analysis results.
