The aim of this work is the study of batch liquid-liquid extraction of phenol from aqueous solutions in a bench-scale well-mixed reactor. The influence of the ratio of phase volumes, temperature, and rotational speed on phenol removal (0.72-1.1% w/w) was investigated using methyl isobutyl ketone as an extracting solvent. For this purpose, the ratio of phase volumes were set at 0.1 and 0.2, the temperature at 10, 20, and 30 degrees C, and the rotational speed at 300, 400, and 500 rpm. A physical model based on the material balance of the phases as well as the equation of mass flux between the phases allowed the estimation of the overall coefficient of mass transfer coupled with the superficial area. Moreover, it proved to fit, satisfactorily well, the experimental data of residual phenol concentration in the organic phase versus time under all the conditions investigated.

This work investigated the purification of phosphoric acid using a suitable organic solvent, followed by re-extraction of the acid from the solvent using water. The work consisted of practical batch and continuous studies and the economics and design of a full scale plant, based on the experimental data. A comprehensive literature survey on the purification of wet process phosphoric acid by organic solvents is presented and the literature describing the design and operation of mixer-settlers has also been reviewed. In batch studies, the equilibrium and distribution curves for the systems water-phosphoric acid-solvent for Benzaldehyde, Cyclohexanol and Methylisobutylketone (MIBK) were determined together with hydrodynamic characteristics for both pure and impure systems. The settling time increased with acid concentration, but power input had no effect. Drop size was found to reduce with acid concentration and power input. For the continuous studies a novel horizontal mixer~settler cascade was designed, constructed and operated using pure and impure acid with MIBK as the solvent. The cascade incorporates three air turbine agitated, cylindrical 900 ml mixers, and three cylindrical 200 ml settlers with air-lift solvent interstage transfer. Mean drop size in the fully baffled mixer was correlated. Drop size distributions were log-normal and size decreased with acid concentration and power input and increased with dispersed phase hold-up. Phase inversion studies showed that the width of the ambivalent region depended upon rotor speed, hold-up and acid concentration. Settler characteristics were investigated by measuring wedge length. Distribution coefficients of impurities and acid were also investigated. The following optimum extraction conditions were found: initial acid concentration 63%, phase ratio of solvent to acid 1:1 (v/v), impeller speed recommended 900 r.p.m. In the washing step the maximum phase ratio of solvent to water was 8:1 (v/v). Work on phosphoric acid concentration involved constructing distillation equipment consisting of a 10& spherical still. A 100 T/d scale detailed process design including capital cost, operating cost and profitability was also completed. A profit model for phosphoric acid extraction was developed and maximised. Recommendations are made for both the application of the results to a practical design and for extensions of the study.

In this work, we have examined the activity and selectivity of new catalysts for the single-stage production of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK, 4- methyl-2-pentanone) from acetone (both in liquid and gas phase), using a fixed bed reactor operated in the temperature range between 373 and 473 K. The main reaction pathways for the synthesis of MIBK from acetone are given in Fig.1. The first step is the self condensation of acetone to diacetone alcohol (DAA, 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone); the second step is the dehydration of DAA to mesityl oxide (MO, 4-methyl-3-penten-2-one); the final step is the selective hydrogenation of the carbon–carbon double bond of MO to form MIBK. The most commonly observed side reactions are over-condensations and unselective hydrogenations (also shown in Fig.1). Two types of catalysts were studied: i)Pd supported on MgO-SiO2 mixed oxides with ratio of Mg to Si, synthetized using Ohnishi’s method and ii)Pd supported on alumina doped with 5% or 10% of MgO. The different Mg-Si and Mg-Al catalysts were characterized by different techniques (XRD, BET, SEM, NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD) and tested under different conditions in the condensation of acetone to diacetone alcohol and its dehydration to mesityl oxide to enhance the activity. Palladium was chosen as metal component, and its hydrogenation activity was studied. A low hydrogenation activity negatively affects the acetone conversion and promotes the production of mesityl oxide. Hydrogenation conditions being too severe may favor the unwanted hydrogenation of acetone to 2-propanol and of MIBK to methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC, 4-methyl-2-pentanol) but this effect is less detrimental to the MIBK selectivity than an unsufficient hydrogenation activity.

Biomass is the world’s most important renewable carbon source, whose major component, carbohydrates, can be valorized by transformation into biofuels and high value-added chemicals. Among the latter, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), obtained by C6 carbohydrates dehydration, is a versatile and key intermediate for the production of a large spectrum of biobased chemicals. Different catalytic systems have been evaluated for HMF production, mostly based on heterogeneous catalysis as alternative to the use of conventional mineral acids [1]. Moreover, niobium oxide has shown interesting properties as acid catalyst for dehydration of sugars [2-3]. On the other hand, the high surface area and large pore size of mesoporous solids make them suitable for many catalytic processes. In the present work, the dehydration of glucose to HMF has been evaluated by using different mesoporous mixed Nb2O5-ZrO2 in a biphasic water–Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) solvent system to avoid the HMF degradation. Different experimental parameters, such as reaction temperature and time, as well as the addition of CaCl2 have been studied in order to maximize the HMF yield.N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms have corroborated the mesostructured character of catalysts, being all isotherms of Type IV according to the IUPAC classification. BET surface area decreases for catalysts with higher Zr content (Table 1). Likewise, pore volume and average pore diameter values diminish after Zr incorporation. Concerning the acid properties, a clear correlation between Nb and acidity can be observed, in such a way that total acidity, as deduced from NH3-TPD, decreases when the Zr content rises, and consequently the amount of Nb is reduced. These mesoporous Nb-Zr catalysts have been tested in the dehydration of glucose to HMF at 175 ºC under batch operation in aqueous solution, using MIBK as co-solvent. It can be observed that both glucose conversion and HMF yield increase with the Nb content, being maximum (90% and 36%, respectively) after 90 minutes for Nb2O5. This trend changes when CaCl2 is added to the reaction medium, improving the catalytic performance of mixed oxides and ZrO2, but Nb2O5 maintains similar results than without salt addition. This could be justified by the interaction between CaCl2 and Lewis acid sites, since zirconium oxide possesses a higher amount of this acid sites type.
