Objective: To investigate the association of different types of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-detected medial meniscal pathology with subregional cartilage loss in the medial tibiofemoral compartment. Methods: A total of 152 women aged >= 40 years, with and without knee osteoarthritis (OA) were included in a longitudinal 24-month observational study. Spoiled gradient recalled acquisitions at steady state (SPGR) and T2-weighted fat-suppressed MRI sequences were acquired. Medial meniscal status of the anterior horn (AH), body, and posterior horn (PH) was graded at baseline: 0 (normal), 1 (intrasubstance meniscal signal changes), 2 (single tears), and 3 (complex tears/maceration). Cartilage segmentation was performed at baseline and 24-month follow-up in various tibiofemoral subregions using computation software. Multiple linear regression models were applied for the analysis with cartilage loss as the outcome. In a first model, the results were adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI). In a second model, the results were adjusted for age, BMI and medial meniscal extrusion. Results: After adjusting for age, BMI, and medial meniscal extrusion, cartilage loss in the total medial tibia (MT) (0.04 mm, P=0.04) and the external medial tibia (eMT) (0.068 mm, P=0.04) increased significantly for compartments with grade 3 lesions. Cartilage loss in the total central medial femoral condyle (cMF) (0.071 mm, P=0.03) also increased significantly for compartments with grade 2 lesions. Cartilage loss at the eMT was significantly related to tears of the PH (0.074 mm; P=0.03). Cartilage loss was not significantly increased for compartments with grade 1 lesions. Conclusion: The protective function of the meniscus appears to be preserved in the presence of intrasubstance meniscal signal changes. Prevalent single tears and meniscal maceration were found to be associated with increased cartilage loss in the same compartment, especially at the PH. Semiquantitative assessment of the knee by expert magnetic resonance imaging readers is a powerful research tool for understanding the natural history of osteoarthritis (OA). Several reliable semiquantitative scoring systems have been applied to large observational cross-sectional and longitudinal epidemiologic studies and interventional clinical trials. Such evaluations have enabled understanding of the relevance of disease in structures within the knee joint to explain pain and progression of OA. Compositional imaging of cartilage has added to our ability to detect early degeneration before morphologic changes are present, which may help to prevent the permanent morphologic changes commonly seen in knee OA.

Objective To assess several baseline risk factors that may predict patellofemoral and tibiofemoral cartilage loss during a 6-month period. Methods For 177 subjects with chronic knee pain, 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of both knees was performed at baseline and followup. Knees were semiquantitatively assessed, evaluating cartilage morphology, subchondral bone marrow lesions, meniscal morphology/extrusion, synovitis, and effusion. Age, sex, and body mass index (BMI), bone marrow lesions, meniscal damage/extrusion, synovitis, effusion, and prevalent cartilage damage in the same subregion were evaluated as possible risk factors for cartilage loss. Logistic regression models were applied to predict cartilage loss. Models were adjusted for age, sex, treatment, and BMI. Results Seventy-nine subregions (1.6%) showed incident or worsening cartilage damage at followup. None of the demographic risk factors was predictive of future cartilage loss. Predictors of patellofemoral cartilage loss were effusion, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 3.5 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.39.4), and prevalent cartilage damage in the same subregion with an adjusted OR of 4.3 (95% CI 1.314.1). Risk factors for tibiofemoral cartilage loss were baseline meniscal extrusion (adjusted OR 3.6 [95% CI 1.310.1]), prevalent bone marrow lesions (adjusted OR 4.7 [95% CI 1.119.5]), and prevalent cartilage damage (adjusted OR 15.3 [95% CI 4.947.4]). Conclusion Cartilage loss over 6 months is rare, but may be detected semiquantitatively by 3T MRI and is most commonly observed in knees with Kellgren/Lawrence grade 3. Predictors of patellofemoral cartilage loss were effusion and prevalent cartilage damage in the same subregion. Predictors of tibiofemoral cartilage loss were prevalent cartilage damage, bone marrow lesions, and meniscal extrusion.

Objective Intrasubstance meniscal signal changes not reaching the articular surface on fast spin echo (FSE) sequences are considered to represent mucoid degeneration on MRI. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of prevalent intrasubstance signal changes with incident tears of the medial meniscus detected on 3.0 T MRI over a 1-year period. Materials and methods A total of 161 women aged a parts per thousand yen40 years participated in a longitudinal 1-year observational study of knee osteoarthritis. MRI (3.0 T) was performed at baseline and 12-month follow-up. The anterior horn, body, and posterior horn of the medial meniscus were scored by two experienced musculoskeletal radiologists using the Boston-Leeds Osteoarthritis Knee Score (BLOKS) system. Four grades were used to describe the meniscal morphology: grade 0 (normal), grade 1 (intrasubstance signal changes not reaching the articular surface), grade 2 (single tears), and grade 3 (complex tears and maceration). Fisher`s exact test and the Cochran-Armitage trend test were performed to evaluate whether baseline intrasubstance signal changes (grade 1) predict incident meniscal tears/maceration (grades 2 and/or 3) in the same subregion of the medial meniscus, when compared to subregions without pathology as the reference group (grade 0). Results Medial meniscal intrasubstance signal changes at baseline did not predict tears at follow-up when evaluating the anterior and posterior horns (left-sided p-values 0.06 and 0.59, respectively). No incident tears were detected in the body. Conclusion We could not demonstrate an association between prevalent medial meniscal intrasubstance signal changes with incident tears over a 1-year period.

Bovine rumen protein with two levels of residual lipids (1.9 per cent or 3.8 per cent) was subjected to thermoplastic extrusion under different temperatures and moisture contents. Protein solubility in different buffers, disulphide cross-linking and molecular weight distribution were determined on the extrudates. After extrusion, samples with 1.9 per cent residual lipids content had a higher concentration of protein insoluble by undetermined forces, irrespective of feed moisture and processing temperature used. Lipid content of 3.8 per cent in the feed material resulted in more protein participating in the extrudate network through non-covalent interactions (hydrophobic and electrostatic) and disulphide bonds. A small dependency of the extrusion process on moisture and temperature and a marked dependency on lipid content, especially phospholipid, was observed, Electrophoresis under non-reducing conditions showed that protein extrusion with low feed moisture promoted high molecular breakdown inside the barrel, probably due to intense shear force, and further protein aggregation at the die end

Natural fibers used in this study were both pre-treated and modified residues from sugarcane bagasse. Polymer of high density polyethylene (HDPE) was employed as matrix in to composites, which were prodUced by mixing high density polyethylene with cellulose (10%) and Cell/ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O (10%), using an extruder and hydraulic press. Tensile tests showed that the Cell/ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O (10%)/HDPE composites present better tensile strength than cellulose (10%)/HDPE composites. Cellulose agglomerations were responsible for poor adhesion between fiber and matrix in cellulose (10%)/HDPE composites. HDPF/natural fibers composites showed also lower tensile strength in comparison to the polymer. The increase in Young`s modulus is associated to fibers reinforcement. SEM analysis showed that the cellulose fibers insertion in the matrix Caused all increase of defects, which were reduced When modified cellulose fibers were Used. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Development and Characterization of L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine Containing Pellets employing Extrusion-Spheronization Method and Drying Process in Fluidized Bad Equipment"". In this work, five formulations of L-alanyl-L-glutamine (glutamine dipeptide) containing pellets with different drug concentration were developed and evaluated: F1 (9.07%); F2 (17.70%); F3 (27.98%); F4 (37.74%) e F5 (47.53%). Pellets were prepared by extrusion-spheronization method and, further, dried in fluidized bad equipment. The following assays were carried out with the batches obtained: granulometry, friability, true density and morphologic analysis. Between the five formulations evaluated, pellets obtained from F3 present best yield (75.80%), most uniform particle size distribution (89.67% of pellets with size in the range of 0.80 to 1.18), most high true density (2.1634 g/ml) and best aspect (1.0795 +/- 0.0410). Due to these features, pellets obtained from F3 were considered adequate to further polymeric coating process in order to produce a multiparticulate system to prolong L-alanyl-L-glutamine release.

The aim this work was develop gastro-resistant pellets of didanosine as well as study the impact on the pellets properties, regarding the way as the binder was added and drying process used. The pellets formation was accompanied by analysis of morphological parameters and didanosine dissolution. In the most cases, pellets showed diameter around 1.0 mm and shape parameters acceptable. The variations of the process did not interfere significantly in pellets size. In turn, drying in fluid bed favored the dissolution of didanosine, in contrast to binder addition on powder form that impaired. In another hand, this last resulted in the best aspect factor (about 1.1). Gastro-resistant pellets showed adequate dissolution, compatible with this type of dosage form. The variables of process studied enabled obtain pellets with characteristics of shape and dissolution just slightly different, indicating flexibility of the formulation for production of gastro-resistant pellets of didanosine.

Two species of Antarctic fish were stressed by moving them from seawater at -1 degrees C to seawater at 10 degrees C and holding them for a period of 10 min. The active cryopelagic species Pagothenia borchgrevinki maintained heart rate while in the benthic species Trematomus bernacchii there was an increase in heart rate. Blood pressure did not change in either species. Both species released catecholamines into the circulation as a consequence of the stress. P. borchgrevinki released the greater amounts, having mean plasma concentrations of 177 +/- 54 nmol.l(-1) noradrenaline and 263 +/- 131 nmol.l(-1) adrenaline at 10 min. Pla.sma noradrenaline concentrations rose to 47 +/- 14 nmol.l(-1) and adrenaline to 73 +/- 28 nmol.l(-1) in T. bernacchii. Blood from P. borchgrevinki was tonometered in the presence of isoprenaline. A fall in extracellular pH suggests the presence of a Na+/H+ antiporter on the red cell membrane, the first demonstration of this in an Antarctic fish. Treatment with the beta-adrenergic antagonist drug sotalol inhibited swelling of red blood cells taken from temperature-stressed P. borchgrevinki, suggesting that the antiporter responds to endogenous catecholamines.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to review a group of patients with meniscal injuries resulting from structural failure unrelated to trauma or degenerative problems to which was given the name ""meniscal injury due to fatigue"". Material and Method: Evaluations were made on 140 patients with meniscal injuries without any apparent cause, who were therefore considered to have meniscal injuries due to fatigue. Among these, 85 patients were male and 55 were female. The medial meniscus was the most affected site (92% of the cases). Results: All these injuries were diagnosed by means of clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging. The patients underwent meniscectomy by means of arthroscopy and the results were divided into two types: good and poor. Poor results were found in 27% of the cases, among which nine patients progressed to idiopathic osteonecrosis. Conclusion: We conclude that injuries due to fatigue must be assessed as injuries caused by failure and, therefore, constituting a syndromic pathological condition that may progress to idiopathic osteonecrosis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically the root surfaces of teeth submitted to orthodontic and surgical extrusion procedures in a dog model. Eighteen adult male dogs, divided into six groups of three dogs each, were used in the study Each animal underwent two procedures: rapid orthodontic extrusion and surgical extrusion of the maxillary lateral incisors. The animals were sacrificed to produce samples at 7, 14, 45, 90, 120, and 180 days after surgery for assessment of cross sections of the coronal, medial, and apical thirds of the treated teeth. At early time points, some active surface and inflammatory resorption was observed exclusively in the surgical extrusion group; however, samples collected at later times demonstrated functional repair of the resorption gaps in both groups. Ankylosis was observed as a minor event and was apparently of a transient nature in samples of the surgical extrusion group. The results demonstrate the importance of maintaining the periodontal ligament and cementum surface; both are vital for the prevention of root resorption. It may be postulated that orthodontic extrusion is more conservative and physiologic than surgical extrusion; however the results showed that function was restored in both groups. H+-ATPase is considered essential for growth of Lactococcus lactis. However, media containing hemin restored the aerobic growth of an H+-ATPase-negative mutant, suggesting that hemin complements proton extrusion. We show that inverted membrane vesicles prepared from hemin-grown L. lactis cells are capable of coupling NADH oxidation to proton translocation.

Research on the stability of flavours during high temperature extrusion cooking is reviewed. The important factors that affect flavour and aroma retention during the process of extrusion are illustrated. A substantial number of flavour volatiles which are incorporated prior to extrusion are normally lost during expansion, this is because of steam distillation. Therefore, a general practice has been to introduce a flavour mix after the extrusion process. This extra operation requires a binding agent (normally oil), and may also result in a non-uniform distribution of the flavour and low oxidative stability of the flavours exposed on the surface. Therefore, the importance of encapsulated flavours, particularly the beta -cyclodextrin-flavour complex, is highlighted in this paper.

It is believed that surface instabilities can occur during the extrusion of linear low density polyethylene due to high extensional stresses at the exit of the die. Local crack development can occur at a critical stress level when melt rupture is reached. This high extensional stress results from the rearrangement of the flow at the boundary transition between the wall exit and the free surface. The stress is highest at the extrudate surface and decreases into the bulk of the material. The location of the region where the critical level is reached can determine the amplitude of the extrudate surface distortion, This paper studies the effect of wall slip on the numerically simulated extensional stress level at the die exit and correlates this to the experimentally determined amplitude of the surface instability. The effect of die exit radius and die wall roughness on extrusion surface instabilities is also correlated to the exit stress level in the same way. Whereas full slip may completely suppress the surface instability, a reduction in the exit stress level and instability amplitude is also shown for a rounded die exit and a slight increase in instability is shown to result from a rough die wall. A surface instability map demonstrates how the shear rate for onset of extrusion surface instabilities can be predicted on the basis of melt strength measurements and simulated stress peaks at the exit of the die.
