The split-pulse laser method is used to reinvestigate the optical attenuation of distilled water in the region from 430 to 630 nm. The studies are then extended to ionic solutions of NaCl, MgCl2, and Na2SO4, these salts forming the major constituents of seawater. The effect of the concentration of these constituents on optical attenuation is investigated. Further, optical attenuation studies are carried out for the region from 430 to 630 nm for an aqueous solution prepared with all the major constituents in the same proportions as in natural seawater. These values are then compared with values obtained for natural seawater. The relative role of dissolved salts and suspended particles on optical attenuation in seawater is discussed. The lowest attenuation is observed at ~450 nm for all solutions and is found to coincide with that for distilled water.

To determine if magnesium deficiency aggravates the effects of a high-fat diet in growing rats in terms of obesity, lipid profile and insulin resistance. The study population comprised 48 newly weaned male Wistar Hannover rats distributed into four groups according to diet, namely, control group (CT; n = 8), control diet provided ad libitum; pair-feeding control group (PF; n = 16), control diet but in the same controlled amount as animals that received high-fat diets; high-fat diet group (HF; n = 12), and magnesium-deficient high-fat diet group (HFMg(-); n = 12). The parameters investigated were adiposity index, lipid profile, magnesium status, insulin sensitivity and the phosphorylation of proteins involved in the insulin-signaling pathway, i.e. insulin receptor β-subunit, insulin receptor substrate 1 and protein kinase B. The HF and HFMg(-) groups were similar regarding gain in body mass, adiposity index and lipid profile, but were significantly different from the PF group. The HFMg(-) group exhibited alterations in magnesium homeostasis as revealed by the reduction in urinary and bone concentrations of the mineral. No inter-group differences were observed regarding glucose homeostasis. Protein phosphorylation in the insulin-signaling pathway was significantly reduced in the high-fat groups compared with the control groups, demonstrating that the intake of fat-rich diets increased insulin resistance, a syndrome that was aggravated by magnesium deficiency. Under the experimental conditions tested, the intake of a magnesium-deficient high-fat diet led to alterations in the insulin-signaling pathway and, consequently, increased insulin resistance.

In this study the role of different metal centers (magnesium, zinc and copper) on the enhancement of the hydrophilic character of metallochlorophylls, was evaluated. The solvatochromism as well as the aggregation process for these compounds in water/ethanol mixtures at different volume ratios were evaluated using Fluorescence, and Resonant Light Scattering (RLS) measurements, aiming to characterize the behavior of these compounds. Independently on the studied metallochlorophyll, the presence of at least 60% of water results in a considerable increase in the fluorescence emission, probably a direct consequence of a lower aggregation of these compounds, which is confirmed by the results from RLS measurements. Additionally, the results suggest that magnesium and zinc chlorophyll should be promising phototherapeutic agents for Photodynamic Therapy.

The variation in the Ca:Mg ratio in amendments used to neutralize soil acidity is one way of altering the availability of those nutrients to the plants in acid soils. The objective of the work was to evaluate the effect of different proportions of calcium and magnesium in the form of CaCO(3) and MgCO(3) Oil the nutrient uptake, and initial production of dry matter by corn plants. The study was carried out in greenhouse conditions, in Lages, SC, with a completely randomized experimental design, with three replications. The treatments were the application of equivalent to 21.0 t ha(-1) of lime, using mixtures of CaCO(3) and MgCO(3) in several proportions to obtain different Ca:Mg ratios (1: 1, 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 16:1 and 32:1), on a Humic Alic Cambisol, with 310 g kg(-1) of clay. The application of treatments caused the following Ca:Mg ratios in the CEC: 1. 1: 1, 2.1:1, 4.0:1, 8.1:1, 16.4:1 and 31.8:1. The high concentrations of exchangeable Ca in soil caused by addition of lime with high Ca content inhibited the uptake of Mg and K by the corn plants. The increase in the soil Ca:Mg ratio reduced the dry matter production and height of plants in the initial stage of development.

Background & aims: This study was undertaken to assess magnesium intake and magnesium status in patients with type 2 diabetes, and to identify the parameters that best predict alterations in fasting glucose and plasma magnesium. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 51; 53.6 +/- 10.5 y) selected within the inclusion factors, at the University Hospital Onofre Lopes. Magnesium intake was assessed by three 24-h recalls. Urine, plasma and erythrocytes magnesium, fasting and 2-h postprandial glucose, HbA1, microalbuminuria, proteinuria, and serum and urine creatinine were measured. Results: Mean magnesium intake (9.37 +/- 1.76 mmol/d), urine magnesium (2.80 +/- 1.51 mmol/d), plasma magnesium (0.71 +/- 0.08 mmol/L) and erythrocyte magnesium (1.92 +/- 0.23 mmol/L) levels were low. Seventy-seven percent of participants presented one or more magnesium status parameters below the cut-off points of 3.00 mmol/L for urine, 0.75 mmol/L for plasma and 1.65 mmol/L for erythrocytes. Subjects presented poor blood glucose control with fasting glucose of 8.1 +/- 3.7 mmol/L, 2-h postprandial glucose of 11.1 +/- 5.1 mmol/L, and HbA1 of 11.4 +/- 3.0%. The parameters that influenced fasting glucose were urine, plasma and dietary magnesium, while plasma magnesium was influenced by creatinine clearance. Conclusions: Magnesium status was influenced by kidney depuration and was altered in patients with type 2 diabetes, and magnesium showed to play an important role in blood glucose control. A wide range of polyfunctional aryl and heteroaryl zinc reagents were efficiently prepared in THF by using (TMP)(2)Mg center dot 2LiCl (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperamidyl) in the presence of ZnCl(2). The possible pathways of this metalation procedure as well as possible reactive intermediates are discussed. This experimental protocol expands the tolerance of functional groups and allows an efficient zincation of sensitive heterocycles such as quinoxaline or pyrazine. The zincated arenes and heteroarenes react with various electrophiles providing the expected products in 60-95 % yield.

The electrochemical behaviour of magnesium was studied in representative chloride and sulphate solutions including NaCl, Na2SO4, NaOH and their mixed solutions, HCl, and H2SO4: (1) by measuring electrochemical polarisation curves, (2) by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and (3) by simultaneous measurement of hydrogen gas evolution and measurement of magnesium dissolution rates using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry (ICPEAS). These experiments showed that a partially protective surface film played an important role in the dissolution of magnesium in chloride and sulphate solutions. Furthermore, the experimental data were consistent with the involvement of the intermediate species Mg+ in magnesium dissolution at film imperfections or on a film-free surface. At such sites, magnesium first oxidised electrochemically to the intermediate species Mg+, and then the intermediate species chemically reacted with water to produce hydrogen and Mg2+. The presence of Cl- ions increased the film free area, and accelerated the electrochemical reaction rate from magnesium metal to Mg+. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The effect of trace additions of magnesium on the sintering of aluminum and its alloys is examined. Magnesium, especially at low concentrations, has a disproportionate effect on sintering because it disrupts the passivating Al2O3 layer through the formation of a spinel phase. Magnesium penetrates the sintering compact by solid-state diffusion, and the oxide is reduced at the metal-oxide interface. This facilitates solid-state sintering, as well as wetting of the underlying metal by sintering liquids, when these are present. The optimum magnesium concentration is approximately 0.1 to 1.0 wt pet, but this is dependent on the volume of oxide and, hence, the particle size, as well as the sintering conditions. Small particle-size fractions require proportionally more magnesium than large-size fractions do.

A magnesium-aluminium alloy of eutectic composition was solidified under two different cooling conditions, producing a low and a high growth rate of the eutectic solid-liquid interface. The high growth rate specimen contained smaller eutectic grains and cells, with a smaller interphase spacing compared with the low growth rate specimen. The high growth rate specimen also contained some primary Mg17Al12 dendrites, suggesting that the coupled zone is skewed towards the Mg phase with increased undercooling, A lamellar eutectic morphology was observed in the low growth rate specimen, while the morphology was fibrous in the high growth rate specimen.

The high strength to weight ratio of magnesium alloys makes them extremely attractive for applications in transport or aerospace technology. However, their corrosion behavior is a major issue and one reason why they are still not as popular as aluminum alloys. This papers reviews the corrosion mechanisms of magnesium and provides the basis for the design of new alloys with improved corrosion properties.

The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior and pre-exposure embrittlement of AZ31 magnesium alloy have been studied by slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) tests in this paper. It is showed that AZ31 sheet material is susceptible to SCC in distilled water, ASTM D1.387 solution, 0.01 M NaCl and 0.1 M NaCl solution. The AZ31 magnesium alloy also becomes embrittled if pre-exposed to 0.01 M NaCl solution prior to tensile testing. The degree of embrittlement increased with increasing the pre-exposure time, It is proposed that both the pre-exposure embrittlement and SCC were due to hydrogen which reduces the cohesive strength. i,e,. hydrogen embrittlement, (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
