Nell’alveo delle indagini sulla storia del commercio librario nell’Italia del Settecento, attente a individuare i legami fra circolazione del libro, diffusione delle idee illuministe e riforme politiche nella seconda metà del secolo, la ricerca ha l’obiettivo di offrire un quadro articolato della fisionomia di un mercante del libro attivo nel periodo più intenso del riformismo estense nel ducato di Modena: Moïsè Beniamino Foà (1730-1821). Il primo capitolo della tesi riguarda le cariche ufficiali che questi ricoprì al servizio delle istituzioni culturali promosse da Francesco III d’Este, le vicende che lo implicarono nelle maglie della censura e il suo impegno civile e politico a favore dei processi di emancipazione degli ebrei in età giacobina e napoleonica. Il secondo tenta di interpretare la genesi della sua fortuna economica attraverso l’esame del testamento e dell’inventario dell’asse ereditario: nel panorama di precarietà dei mestieri del libro dal secolo dei lumi ai primi decenni della Restaurazione, pare arduo individuare un libraio comparabile a Foà per solidità e capacità di investimento. All’analisi della clientela del mercante è dedicato il terzo capitolo, che si sviluppa seguendo il filo dei rapporti diplomatici intessuti da Francesco III con le corti italiane nell’orbita dell’influenza politica e culturale asburgica. Si descrivono, quindi, i viaggi europei e la rete dei contatti commerciali che garantirono la ricchezza dell’offerta rispecchiata dai numerosi cataloghi librari pubblicati nel corso di oltre un cinquantennio. Di questi si offre una descrizione bibliografica e quantitativa con un affondo sulla diffusione del libro scientifico. Con la fisionomia del mercante viaggiatore, Foà coniugava quella dell’erudito bibliofilo: la ricerca si conclude con la presentazione della sua biblioteca e dei suoi rapporti con i filologi dell’epoca.

Prendere decisioni è un’attivita incessante ed intrinseca nella nostra quotidianità, i ricercatori della Cornell University stimano che ogni giorno un adulto prenda circa 35.000 decisioni semi-consapevoli. Fare scelte è un attività molto dipendiosa a livello mentale e lo è ancora di più se le scelte da prendere sono importanti e hanno ripercussioni anche a livello collettivo e non solo individuale. L’affaticamento decisionale è un tema critico in molti ambiti professionali e può essere considerato un vero e proprio bias, uno studio su più di 1.000 decisioni prese da otto giudici israeliani per la libertà vigilata nel 2009 ha rilevato che la probabilità di ottenere esito favorevole era del 65% all’inizio di ogni sessione, ma diminuiva a meno del 10% prima della pausa pranzo, il lavoro mentale di decidere caso dopo caso, logorava in modo importante le energie decisionali dei giudici, (Tierney, 2011). Lo studio che partirà da queste premesse andrà ad indagare e approfondire il tema della Decison Fatigue, ancora poco conosciuto, lo stato attuale del mercato, e i possibili sbocchi lato prodotto. Successivamente sulla base dell’analisi precedente, da cui saranno estratti: target di riferimento, bisogni e soluzioni applicabili, sarà realizzato un device fisico che proporrà una soluzione mirata al contesto e ai problemi indiviuati.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength of a direct composite, for indirect application, that received heat treatment, with or without investment. One indirect composite was used for comparison. For determination of the heat treatment temperature, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed, considering the initial weight loss temperature and glass transition temperature (Tg). Then, after photoactivation (600 mW/cm² - 40 s), the specimens (10 x 2 x 2 mm) were heat-treated following these conditions: 170ºC for 5, 10 or 15 min, embedded or not embedded in investment. Flexural strength was assessed as a means to evaluate the influence of different heat treatment periods and investment embedding on mechanical properties. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). TGA showed an initial weight loss temperature of 180ºC and DSC showed a Tg value of 157°C. Heat treatment was conducted in an oven (Flli Manfredi, Italy), after 37°C storage for 48 h. Flexural strength was evaluated after 120 h at 37°C storage. The results showed that different periods and investment embedding presented similar statistical values. Nevertheless, the direct composite resin with treatments presented higher values (178.7 MPa) compared to the indirect composite resin (146.0 MPa) and the same direct composite submitted to photoactivation only (151.7 MPa). Within the limitations of this study, it could be concluded that the heat treatment increased the flexural strength of the direct composite studied, leading to higher mechanical strength compared to the indirect composite.

We report here genome sequences and comparative analyses of three closely related parasitoid wasps: Nasonia vitripennis, N. giraulti, and N. longicornis. Parasitoids are important regulators of arthropod populations, including major agricultural pests and disease vectors, and Nasonia is an emerging genetic model, particularly for evolutionary and developmental genetics. Key findings include the identification of a functional DNA methylation tool kit; hymenopteran-specific genes including diverse venoms; lateral gene transfers among Pox viruses, Wolbachia, and Nasonia; and the rapid evolution of genes involved in nuclear-mitochondrial interactions that are implicated in speciation. Newly developed genome resources advance Nasonia for genetic research, accelerate mapping and cloning of quantitative trait loci, and will ultimately provide tools and knowledge for further increasing the utility of parasitoids as pest insect-control agents.

A study of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) in Papua New Guinea for the years 1958-87 revealed four instances of familiar BL. Incident cases occurred within 1 year of each other in the four families. Personal follow-up was possible for three of these families whose pedigrees showed that two or more siblings were affected. There was no significant variation of the incidence of BL by year of diagnosis or month of onset. There was significant variation in annual average incidence of BL between the three provinces studied, with the highest incidence in the Nuku and Lumi census districts (of the West Sepik Province). This is the first report of familial BL outside Africa.

Background: A DNA vaccine (pVAXhsp65) containing the gene of a heat-shock protein (hsp65) from Mycobacterium leprae showed high immunogenicity and protective efficacy against tuberculosis in BALB/c mice. A possible deleterious effect related to autoimmunity needed to be tested because hsp65 is highly homologous to the correspondent mammalian protein. In this investigation we tested the effect of a previous immunization with DNAhsp65 in the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a rat model of multiple sclerosis. Methods: Female Lewis rats were immunized with 3 pVAXhsp65 doses by intramuscular route. Fifteen days after the last DNA dose the animals were evaluated for specific immunity or submitted to induction of EAE. Animals were evaluated daily for weight loss and clinical score, and euthanized during the recovery phase to assess the immune response and inflammatory infiltration at the central nervous system. Results: Immunization with pVAXhsp65 induced a specific immune response characterized by production of IgG(2b) anti-hsp65 antibodies and IFN-gamma secretion. Previous immunization with pVAXhsp65 did not change EAE clinical manifestations (weight and clinical score). However, the vaccine clearly decreased brain and lumbar spinal cord inflammation. In addition, it downmodulated IFN-gamma and IL-10 production by peripheral lymphoid organs. Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that this vaccine does not trigger a deleterious effect on EAE development and also points to a potential protective effect. Copyright (C) 2010 S. Karger AG, Basel

Foram analisados sucos industrializados de diversas frutas brasileiras, assim como frutas naturais das espécies utilizadas na fabricação dos sucos processados, adquiridos na Capital do Estado de São Paulo, para se determinar sua concentração em ácido ascórbico. O método utilizado na dosagem do ácido ascórbico foi o de Tillmans. Os resultados foram expressos em valores médios. Dentre os sucos industrializados analisados, os sucos integrais de caju e os concentrados de laranja e tangerina, foram os que apresentaram maior teor de ácido ascórbico. Os valores médios para sucos de frutas frescas foram mais elevados que para os industrializados (exceção dos concentrados) . Calculou-se também a quantidade de ácido ascórbico (em mg) contida em um copo (250 ml) de refresco ou de suco natural, bem como seu custo. Esses dados foram também relacionados com as necessidades diárias recomendadas, as quais poderão ser preenchidas de maneira menos dispendiosa pelas diluições necessárias de suco de caju processado ou por suco fresco de laranja.

A measurement is presented of the tt¯ inclusive production cross section in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement was performed in the lepton+jets final state using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The cross section was obtained using a likelihood discriminant fit and b-jet identification was used to improve the signal-to-background ratio. The inclusive tt¯ production cross section was measured to be 260±1(stat)+22−23(stat)±8(lumi)±4(beam) pb assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV, in good agreement with the theoretical prediction of 253+13−15 pb. The tt¯→(e,μ)+jets production cross section in the fiducial region determined by the detector acceptance is also reported.

A search is performed for top-quark pairs (tt¯) produced together with a photon (γ) with transverse momentum >20 GeV using a sample of tt¯ candidate events in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.59 fb−1 of proton--proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In total 140 and 222 tt¯γ candidate events are observed in the electron and muon channels, to be compared to the expectation of 79±26 and 120±39 non-tt¯γ background events respectively. The production of tt¯γ events is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations away from the null hypothesis. The tt¯γ production cross section times the branching ratio (BR) of the single-lepton decay channel is measured in a fiducial kinematic region within the ATLAS acceptance. The measured value is σfidtt¯γ=63±8(stat.)+17−13(syst.)±1(lumi.) fb per lepton flavor, in good agreement with the leading-order theoretical calculation normalized to the next-to-leading-order theoretical prediction of 48±10 fb.

A measurement of the inclusive cross section for top quark pair production in pp collisions using events with an isolated lepton (muon or electron) and a τ lepton decaying to hadrons (τhad) is reported. Measurements of the branching ratios of top quark decays into leptons and jets using events with tt¯ (top antitop) pairs are also reported. Events were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The collected data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1. The inclusive cross section measured using events with an isolated lepton and a τhad is σtt¯=183±9(stat.)±23(syst.)±3(lumi.)pb. The measured top quark branching ratios agree with the Standard Model predictions within the measurement uncertainties of a few percent.

More sensitive methodologies are necessary to improve strongyloidiasis diagnosis. This study compared the sensitivities of the McMaster modified technique and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, both performed in faecal samples. Lewis rats were subcutaneously infected with 4,000, 400 or 40 infective third-stage larvae, considered as high, moderate or low infection, respectively. Seven days later, they were euthanized to count adult nematodes recovered from the small intestine. Stool samples were used to count the number of eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces and to detect parasite DNA by PCR performed with a species and a genus primer pair. The sensitivity of these assays depended upon parasite burden and the primer specificity. All assays presented 100% sensitivity at the highest parasite load. In the moderate infection, EPG and PCR with the genus primer maintained 100% specificity, whereas PCR sensitivity with the species primer decreased to 77.7%. In low infection, the sensitivity was 60% for EPG, 0% for PCR with the species primer and 90% for PCR done with the genus primer. Together, these results suggest that PCR with a genus primer can be a very sensitive methodology to detect Strongyloides venezuelensisin faeces of Lewis rats infected with very low parasite burden.

Opinnäytteeni teososana on 3D-Kalevala projektinimellä tunnetun animaation partikkeliefektit. Tarkastelen tarkemmin elokuvan Lumi-, Kylä-, Paja- ja Luola-kohtauksia. 3D-Kalevala on tietokoneella tehty animaatio, joka kertoo Suomen kansalliseepoksen Kalevalan päähenkilöstä Väinämöisestä. Elokuvassa vanha Väinämöinen muistelee nuoruutensa tapahtumia. 3D-Kalevala-projekti käynnistettiin vuonna 2003, mutta sen alkuperäiset tekijät eivät saaneet sitä valmiiksi, ja projektin teko keskeytettiin vuonna 2005. Vuoden 2006 keväällä projektiin perustettiin uusi kahden verkkoviestinnän opiskelijan projektiryhmä, jonka tehtävänä oli saada elokuva valmiiksi vuoden 2007 kevääseen mennessä. Kun aloitimme projektin tekemisen, olin kolmiulotteisessa mallinnuksessa aloittelija. Tästä johtuen opinnäytteen kirjallinen osa on opas aloittelijoille partikkelien maailmaan. Selvitän raportissani miten elokuvan partikkeliefektit rakennettiin, mitä niiden tekeminen minulta vaati ja miten ne loppujen lopuksi mielestäni onnistuivat. Elokuvan efektit tehtiin 3D Studio Max-ohjelman versiolla 6.0, ja tämän takia kirjoitankin efektien rakentamisesta kyseisen ohjelman keinoin. Projektin suuruuden vuoksi molemmat tekijät pääsivät tekemään monenlaisia töitä, mutta päävastuualueet olivat selvät. Minun osani oli tehdä elokuvaan efektejä. Partikkeliefektit ovat proseduraalisia efektejä, joiden avulla on mahdollista tehdä aidon näköisiä luonnonilmiöitä, kuten tulta, savua, kipinöitä ja veden roiskeita. Koska partikkeliefektit mallintavat reaalimaailman ilmiöitä, on tekijän hyvä olla kiinnostunut selvittämään ilmiöiden käyttäytymistä luonnossa. Raportoin myös projektin aikana huomaamistani hyvistä tavoista opiskella itsenäisesti partikkelien rakentamiseen käytettyjä tekniikoita. On hyvä lukea 3D Studio Maxin tasokasta käyttöohjesovellusta, tutustua Internetissä löytyviin 3D-aiheisiin foorumeihin, käydä aiheesta tutoriaaleja läpi sekä tutustua ohjelman ominaisuuksiin kokeilemalla ja tutkimalla itsenäisesti. Elokuvan efektit onnistuivat mielestäni kiitettävästi ottaen huomioon lähtötasoni. Löysin tapoja kehittää itseäni ja helppoja keinoja toteuttaa realistista jälkeä efektien rakentamisessa. Toivon, että raportistani olisi jollekin 3D-partikkeliefekteistä kiinnostuneelle hyötyä.
