It is proved in [1],[2] that in odd dimensional spaces any uniform decay of the local energy implies that it must decay exponentially. We extend this to even dimensional spaces and to more general perturbations (including the transmission problem) showing that any uniform decay of the local energy implies that it must decay like O(t^(−2n) ), t ≫ 1 being the time and n being the space dimension.

We discuss the long-range interactions that arise in homogeneous turbulence as a consequence of the Biot-Savart law. We note that, somewhat surprisingly, these long-range correlations are very weak in decaying, isotropic turbulence, and we argue that this should also be true for magnetohydrodynamic, rotating and stratified turbulence. If this is indeed the case, it is possible to make explicit predictions for the rate of decay of energy in these anisotropic systems, and it turns out that these predictions are consistent with the available numerical and experimental evidence.

Previous researchers use the velocity decay as an input to investigate the ship’s propeller jet induced scour. A researcher indicated that most of the equations used to predict the stability of various protection systems are often missing a physical background. The momentum decay and energy decay are currently proposed as an initial input for seabed scouring investigation, which are more sensible in physics. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) experiments are used to obtain the velocity data and then transforming into momentum and energy decays. The findings proposed several exponential equations of velocity, momentum and energy decays to estimate the region exposed to the seabed scouring.

The one-electron reduced local energy function, t ~ , is introduced and has the property < tL)=(~>. It is suggested that the accuracy of SL reflects the local accuracy of an approximate wavefunction. We establish that <~~>~ <~2,> and present a bound formula, E~ , which is such that where Ew is Weinstein's lower bound formula to the ground state. The nature of the bound is not guaranteed but for sufficiently accurate wavefunctions it will yield a lower bound. ,-+ 1'S I I Applications to X LW Hz. and ne are presented.

In this paper, we investigated the nonlinear vibrations of a Non-ideal (NIS) electromechanical absorber (NEVA), taking into account a modified mathematical model of (MR) Damper. We observed the presence of the Sornmerfeld effect (it is the steady state frequencies of the DC motor, which it will usually increasing as more power (Voltage) is given to it, in a step-by-step fashion. When a resonance condition it is reached, the better part of this energy it is consumed to generate large amplitude vibrations of the foundation, without sensible change of the motor frequency). The obtained results, by using numerical and analytical simulations, were discussed, in details.

____ The Liénard type differential equation of the form x00 + f(x) ¢ x0 + g(x) = 0 has a central role in business cycle models by Káldor [3], Kalecki [4] and Goodwin [2], moreover in a new model describing the cyclical behavior of unemployment and entrepreneurship [1]. The same type of nonlinear equation explains the features of forced pendulums and electric circuits [5]. The related literature discusses mainly the existence of limit cycles, although the fundamental stability questions of this topic can be managed much more easily. The achieved results also outline the conditions for the existence of limit cycles. In this work, by the effective language of real valued analysis, we obtain easy-formulated results which may broaden the frames of economic and business cycle models, moreover we may gain new illustrative particular cases for e.g., [1].

Sleep deprivation leads to increased subsequent sleep length and depth and to deficits in cognitive performance in humans. In animals extreme sleep deprivation is eventually fatal. The cellular and molecular mechanisms causing the symptoms of sleep deprivation are unclear. This thesis was inspired by the hypothesis that during wakefulness brain energy stores would be depleted, and they would be replenished during sleep. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the energy metabolic processes taking place in the brain during sleep deprivation. Endogenous brain energy metabolite levels were assessed in vivo in rats and in humans in four separate studies (Studies I-IV). In the first part (Study I) the effects of local energy depletion on brain energy metabolism and sleep were studied in rats with the use of in vivo microdialysis combined with high performance liquid chromatography. Energy depletion induced by 2,4-dinitrophenol infusion into the basal forebrain was comparable to the effects of sleep deprivation: both increased extracellular concentrations of adenosine, lactate, and pyruvate, and elevated subsequent sleep. This result supports the hypothesis of a connection between brain energy metabolism and sleep. The second part involved healthy human subjects (Studies II-IV). Study II aimed to assess the feasibility of applying proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) to study brain lactate levels during cognitive stimulation. Cognitive stimulation induced an increase in lactate levels in the left inferior frontal gyrus, showing that metabolic imaging of neuronal activity related to cognition is possible with 1H MRS. Study III examined the effects of sleep deprivation and aging on the brain lactate response to cognitive stimulation. No physiologic, cognitive stimulation-induced lactate response appeared in the sleep-deprived and in the aging subjects, which can be interpreted as a sign of malfunctioning of brain energy metabolism. This malfunctioning may contribute to the functional impairment of the frontal cortex both during aging and sleep deprivation. Finally (Study IV), 1H MRS major metabolite levels in the occipital cortex were assessed during sleep deprivation and during photic stimulation. N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA/H2O) decreased during sleep deprivation, supporting the hypothesis of sleep deprivation-induced disturbance in brain energy metabolism. Choline containing compounds (Cho/H2O) decreased during sleep deprivation and recovered to alert levels during photic stimulation, pointing towards changes in membrane metabolism, and giving support to earlier observations of altered brain response to stimulation during sleep deprivation. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that sleep deprivation alters brain energy metabolism. However, the effects of sleep deprivation on brain energy metabolism may vary from one brain area to another. Although an effect of sleep deprivation might not in all cases be detectable in the non-stimulated baseline state, a challenge imposed by cognitive or photic stimulation can reveal significant changes. It can be hypothesized that brain energy metabolism during sleep deprivation is more vulnerable than in the alert state. Changes in brain energy metabolism may participate in the homeostatic regulation of sleep and contribute to the deficits in cognitive performance during sleep deprivation.

The decentralized power is characterised by generation of power nearer to the demand centers, focusing mainly on meeting local energy needs. A decentralized power system can function either in the presence of grid, where it can feed the surplus power generated to the grid, or as an independent/stand-alone isolated system exclusively meeting the local demands of remote locations. Further, decentralized power is also classified on the basis of type of energy resources used-non-renewable and renewable. These classifications along with a plethora of technological alternatives have made the whole prioritization process of decentralized power quite complicated for decision making. There is abundant literature, which has discussed various approaches that have been used to support decision making under such complex situations. We envisage that summarizing such literature and coming out with a review paper would greatly help the policy/decision makers and researchers in arriving at effective solutions. With such a felt need 102 articles were reviewed and features of several technological alternatives available for decentralized power, the studies on modeling and analysis of economic, environmental and technological asibilities of both grid-connected (GC) and stand-alone (SA) systems as decentralized power options are presented. Spike detection in neural recordings is the initial step in the creation of brain machine interfaces. The Teager energy operator (TEO) treats a spike as an increase in the `local' energy and detects this increase. The performance of TEO in detecting action potential spikes suffers due to its sensitivity to the frequency of spikes in the presence of noise which is present in microelectrode array (MEA) recordings. The multiresolution TEO (mTEO) method overcomes this shortcoming of the TEO by tuning the parameter k to an optimal value m so as to match to frequency of the spike. In this paper, we present an algorithm for the mTEO using the multiresolution structure of wavelets along with inbuilt lowpass filtering of the subband signals. The algorithm is efficient and can be implemented for real-time processing of neural signals for spike detection. The performance of the algorithm is tested on a simulated neural signal with 10 spike templates obtained from [14]. The background noise is modeled as a colored Gaussian random process. Using the noise standard deviation and autocorrelation functions obtained from recorded data, background noise was simulated by an autoregressive (AR(5)) filter. The simulations show a spike detection accuracy of 90%and above with less than 5% false positives at an SNR of 2.35 dB as compared to 80% accuracy and 10% false positives reported [6] on simulated neural signals.

Water-ethanol mixtures exhibit many interesting anomalies, such as negative excess partial molar volume of ethanol, excess sound absorption coefficient at low concentrations, and positive deviation from Raoult's law for vapor pressure, to mention a few. These anomalies have been attributed to different, often contradictory origins, but a quantitative understanding is still lacking. We show by computer simulation and theoretical analyses that these anomalies arise from the sudden emergence of a bicontinuous phase that occurs at a relatively low ethanol concentration of x(eth) approximate to 0.06-0.10 (that amounts to a volume fraction of 0.17-0.26, which is a significant range!). The bicontinuous phase is formed by aggregation of ethanol molecules, resulting in a weak phase transition whose nature is elucidated. We find that the microheterogeneous structure of the mixture gives rise to a pronounced nonmonotonic composition dependence of local compressibility and nonmonotonic dependence in the peak value of the radial distribution function of ethyl groups. A multidimensional free energy surface of pair association is shown to provide a molecular explanation of the known negative excess partial volume of ethanol in terms of parallel orientation and hence better packing of the ethyl groups in the mixture due to hydrophobic interactions. The energy distribution of the ethanol molecules indicates additional energy decay channels that explain the excess sound attenuation coefficient in aqueous alcohol mixtures. We studied the dependence of the solvation of a linear polymer chain on the composition of the water-ethanol solvent. We find that there is a sudden collapse of the polymer at x(eth) approximate to 0.05-a phenomenon which we attribute to the formation of the microheterogeneous structures in the binary mixture at low ethanol concentrations. Together with recent single molecule pulling experiments, these results provide new insight into the behavior of polymer chain and foreign solutes, such as enzymes, in aqueous binary mixtures.
