This article modifies the usual form of the Dubinin-Radushkevich pore-filling model for application to liquid-phase adsorption data, where large molecules are often involved. In such cases it is necessary to include the repulsive part of the energy in the micropores, which is accomplished here by relating the pore potential to the fluid-solid interaction potential. The model also considers the nonideality of the bulk liquid phase through the UNIFAC activity coefficient model, as well as structural heterogeneity of the carbon. For the latter the generalized adsorption integral is used while incorporating the pore-size distribution obtained by density functional theory analysis of argon adsorption data. The model is applied here to the interpretation of aqueous phase adsorption isotherms of three different esters on three commercial activated carbons. Excellent agreement between the model and experimental data is observed, and the fitted Lennard-Jones size parameter for the adsorbate-adsorbate interactions compares well with that estimated from known critical properties, supporting the modified approach. On the other hand, the model without consideration of bulk nonideality, or when using classical models of the characteristic energy, gives much poorer bts of the data and unrealistic parameter values.

The characterization of three commercial activated carbons was carried out using the adsorption of various compounds in the aqueous phase. For this purpose the generalized adsorption isotherm was employed, and a modification of the Dubinin-Radushkevich pore filling model, incorporating repulsive contributions to the pore potential as well as bulk liquid phase nonideality, was used as the local isotherm. Eight different flavor compounds were used as adsorbates, and the isotherms were jointly fitted to yield a common pore size distribution for each carbon. The bulk liquid phase nonideality was incorporated through the UNIFAC activity coefficient model, and the repulsive contribution to the pore potential was incorporated through the Steele 10-4-3 potential model. The mean micropore network coordination number for each carbon was also determined from the fitted saturation capacity based on percolation theory. Good agreement between the model and the experimental data was observed. In addition, excellent agreement between the bimodal gamma pore size distribution and density functional theory-cum-regularization-based pore size distribution obtained by argon adsorption was also observed, supporting the validity of the model. The results show that liquid phase adsorption, using adsorptive molecules of different sizes, can be an effective means of characterizing the pore size distribution as well as connectivity. Alternately, if the carbon pore size distribution is independently known, the method can be used to measure critical molecular sizes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science.

A modification of the Dubinin-Radushkevich pore filling model by incorporation of the repulsive contribution to the pore potential, and of bulk non-ideality, is proposed in this paper for characterization of activated carbon using liquid phase adsorption. For this purpose experiments have been performed using ethyl propionate, ethyl butyrate, and ethyl isovalerate as adsorbates and the microporous-mesoporous activated carbons Filtrasorb 400, Norit ROW 0.8 and Norit ROX 0.8 as adsorbents. The repulsive contribution to the pore potential is incorporated through a Lennard-Jones intermolecular potential model, and the bulk-liquid phase non-ideality through the UNIFAC activity coefficient model. For the characterization of activated carbons, the generalized adsorption isotherm is utilized with a bimodal gamma function as the pore size distribution function. It is found that the model can represent the experimental data very well, and significantly better than when the classical energy-size relationship is used, or when bulk non-ideality is neglected. Excellent agreement between the bimodal gamma pore size distribution and DFT-cum-regularization based pore size distribution is also observed, supporting the validity of the proposed model. A simple percolation theory-based method for determination of the pore network connectivity using liquid phase adsorption isotherm data combined with a density functional theory (DFT)-based pore size distribution is presented in this article. The liquid phase adsorption experiments have been performed using eight different esters as adsorbates and microporous-mesoporous activated carbons Filtrasorb-400, Norit ROW 0.8 and Norit ROX 0.8 as adsorbents. The density functional theory (DFT)-based pore size distributions of the carbons were obtained using DFT analysis of argon adsorption data. The mean micropore network coordination numbers, Z, of the carbons were determined based on DR characteristic plots and fitted saturation capacities using percolation theory. Based on this method, the critical molecular sizes of the model compounds used in this study were also obtained. The incorporation of percolation concepts in the prediction of multicomponent adsorption equilibria is also investigated, and found to improve the performance of the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) model for the large molecules utilized in this study. As a basis for the commercial separation of normal paraffins a detailed study has been made of factors affecting the adsorption of binary liquid mixtures of high molecular weight normal paraffins (C12, C16, and C20) from isooctane on type 5A molecular sieves. The literature relating to molecular sieve properties and applications, and to liquid-phase adsorption of high molecular weight normal paraffin compounds by zeolites, was reviewed. Equilibrium isotherms were determined experimentally for the normal paraffins under investigation at temperatures of 303oK, 323oK and 343oK and showed a non-linear, favourable- type of isotherm. A higher equilibrium amount was adsorbed with lower molecular weight normal paraffins. An increase in adsorption temperature resulted in a decrease in the adsorption value. Kinetics of adsorption were investigated for the three normal paraffins at different temperatures. The effective diffusivity and the rate of adsorption of each normal paraffin increased with an increase in temperature in the range 303 to 343oK. The value of activation energy was between 2 and 4 kcal/mole. The dynamic properties of the three systems were investigated over a range of operating conditions (i.e. temperature, flow rate, feed concentration, and molecular sieve size in the range 0.032 x 10-3 to 2 x 10-3m) with a packed column. The heights of adsorption zones calculated by two independent equations (one based on a constant width, constant velocity and adsorption zone and the second on a solute material balance within the adsorption zone) agreed within 3% which confirmed the validity of using the mass transfer zone concept to provide a simple design procedure for the systems under study. The dynamic capacity of type 5A sieves for n-eicosane was lower than for n-hexadecane and n-dodecane corresponding to a lower equilibrium loading capacity and lower overall mass transfer coefficient. The values of individual external, internal, theoretical and experimental overall mass transfer coefficient were determined. The internal resistance was in all cases rate-controlling. A mathematical model for the prediction of dynamic breakthrough curves was developed analytically and solved from the equilibrium isotherm and the mass transfer rate equation. The experimental breakthrough curves were tested against both the proposed model and a graphical method developed by Treybal. The model produced the best fit with mean relative percent deviations of 26, 22, and 13% for the n-dodecane, n-hexadecane, and n-eicosane systems respectively.

The present work undertakes the preparation and physico-chemical characterisation of iron promoted sulphated zirconia (SZ) with different amounts of iron loading and their application to Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of benzene, toluene and xylene under different experimental conditions, XRD and laser Raman techniques reveal the stabilisation of the tetragonal phase of zirconia and the existence of iron in highly dispersed form as Fe203 on the catalyst surface. The surface acidic properties were determined by ammonia temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and perylene adsorption, The results were supported by the TGA studies after adsorption of pyridine and 2,6-dimethylpyridine (2,6-DMP), Strong Lewis acid sites on the surface, which are evident from TPD and perylene adsorption studies. explain the high catalytic activity of the systems towards benzoylation. The experimental results provide evidence for the truly heterogeneous nature of the reaction. The studies also establish the resistance to deactivation in the metal incorporated sulphated systems.

Silica xerogels were prepared from sonohydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane and exchange of the liquid phase of the wet gel by acetone. Monolithic xerogels were obtained by slow evaporation of acetone. The structural characteristics of the xerogels were studied as a function of temperature up to 1100 degrees C by means of bulk and skeletal density measurements, linear shrinkage measurements and thermal analyses (DTA, TG and DL). The results were correlated with the evolution in the UV-Vis absorption. Particularly, the initial pore structure of the dried acetone-exchanged xerogel was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering and nitrogen adsorption. The acetone-exchanged xerogels exhibit greater porosity in the mesopore region presenting greater mean pore size (similar to 4 nm) when compared to non-exchanged xerogels. The porosity of the xerogels is practically stable in the temperature range between 200 degrees C and 800 degrees C. Evolution in the structure of the solid particles (silica network) is the predominant process upon heating up to about 400 degrees C and pore elimination is the predominant process above 900 degrees C. At 1000 degrees C the xerogels are still monolithic and retain about 5 vol.% pores. The xerogels exhibited foaming phenomenon after hold for 10 h at 1100 degrees C. This temperature is even higher than that found for foaming of non-exchanged xerogels. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A great deal of effort has been made at searching for alternative catalysts to replace conventional Lewis acid catalyst aluminum trichloride (AlCl3). In this paper, immobilization of AlCl3 on mesoporous MCM-41 silica with and without modification was carried out. The catalytic properties of the immobilized catalyst systems for liquid-phase isopropylation of naphthalene were studied and compared with those of H/MCM-41 and H/mordenite. The structures of the surface-immobilized aluminum chloride catalysts were studied and identified by using solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The catalytic activity of the immobilized catalysts was found to be similar to that of acidic mordenite zeolite. A significant enhancement in the selectivity of 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene (2,6-DIPN) was observed over the immobilized aluminum chloride catalysts. Immobilization of aluminum chloride on mesoporous silica coupled with surface silylation is a promising way of developing alternative catalyst system for liquid-phase Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions. For the activated carbon (AC) production, we used the most common industrial and consumer solid waste, namely polyethyleneterephthalate (PET), alone or blended with other synthetic polymer such polyacrylonitrile (PAN). By mixing PET, with PAN, an improvement in the yield of the AC production was found and the basic character and some textural and chemical properties were enhanced. The PET–PAN mixture was subjected to carbonisation, with a pyrolysis yield of 31.9%, between that obtained with PET (16.9%) or PAN (42.6%) separately. The AC revealed a high surface area (1400, 1230 and 1117 m2 g−1) and pore volume (0.46, 0.56 and 0.50 cm3 g−1), respectively, for PET, PAN and PET–PAN precursors. Selected ACs were successfully tested for 4- chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) and diuron removal from the liquid phase, showing a higher adsorption capacity (1.7 and 1.2 mmol g−1, respectively, for MCPA and diuron) and good fits with the Langmuir (PET) and Freundlich equation (PAN and PET–PAN blend). With MCPA, the controlling factor to the adsorption capacity was the porous volume and the average pore size. Concerning diuron, the adsorption was controlled essentially by the external diffusion. A remarkable result is the use of different synthetic polymers wastes, as precursors for the production of carbon materials, with high potential application on the pesticides removals from the liquid phase.

Yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics were sintered by liquid phase sintering at low temperatures using bioglass as sintering additive. ZrO2-bioglass ceramics were prepared by mixing a ZrO2 stabilized with 3 Mol%Y2O3 and different amounts of bioglass based on 3CaO center dot P2O5-MgO-SiO2 system. Mixtures were compacted by uniaxial cold pressing and sintered in air, at 1200 and 1300 degrees C for 120 min. The influence of the bioglass content on the densification, tetragonal phase stability, bending strength, hardness and fracture toughness was investigated. The ceramics sintered at 1300 degrees C and prepared by addition of 3% of bioglass, exhibited the highest strength of 435 MPa, hardness of 1170 HV and fracture toughness of 6.3 MPa m(1/2). These results are related to the low monoclinic phase content, high relative density and the presence of the thermal residual stress generated between the ZrO2-matrix and bioglass grain boundary, contributing to the activation of the toughening mechanisms. A selective method using three-phase liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) in conjunction with LC-MS-MS was devised for the enantioselective determination of chloroquine and its n-dealkylated metabolites in plasma samples. After alkalinization of the samples, the analytes were extracted into n-octanol immobilized in the pores of a polypropylene hollow fiber membrane and back extracted into the acidic acceptor phase (0.1 M TFA) filled into the lumen of the hollow fiber. Following LPME, the analytes were resolved on a Chirobiotic V column using methanol/ACN/glacial aceti acid/diethylamine (90:10:0.5:0.5 by volume) as the mobile phase. The MS detection was carried out using multiple reaction monitoring with ESI in the positive ion mode. The optimized LPME method yielded extraction recoveries ranging from 28 to 66%. The method was linear over 5 - 500 ng/mL and precision (RSD) and accuracy (relative error) values were below 15% for all analytes. The developed method was applied to the determination of the analytes in rat plasma samples after oral administration of the racemic drug.

A simple and rapid method, which involves liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) followed by HPLC analysis using Chiralpak AD column and UV detection, was developed for the enantioselective determination of mefloquine in plasma samples. Several factors that influence the efficiency of three-phase LPME were investigated and optimized. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the mean recoveries were 33.2 and 35.0% for (-)-(SR-)-mefloquine and (+)-(RS)-mefloquine, respectively. The method was linear over 50-1500 ng/ml range. Within-day and between-day assay precision and accuracy were below 15% for both enantiomers at concentrations of 150, 600 and 1200 ng/ml. Furthermore, no racemization or degradation were seen with the method described. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
