Vanadia/ceria catalysts (2–10 wt% of V2O5) were prepared by wet impregnation of ammonium metavanadate in oxalic acid solution. Structural characterization was done with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area measurements, FT-IR spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic spectral analysis (51V MASNMR). XRD and 51V MASNMR results show highly dispersed vanadia species at lower loadings and the formation of CeVO4 phase at higher V2O5 loading. The catalytic activity of catalysts was conducted in liquid phase oxidation of ethylbenzene with H2O2 as oxidant. The oxidation activity is increased with loading up to 8 wt% V2O5 and then decreased with further increase in V2O5 content to 10 wt%. Different vanadia species evidenced by various techniques were found to be selective towards ethylbenzene oxidation. The CeVO4 formation associated with increased concentration of vanadia on ceria results the production of acetophenone along with 2-hydroxyacetophenone.

We here report the synthesis, characterization and catalytic performance of new supported Ru(III) and Ru(0) catalysts. In contrast to most supported catalysts, these new developed catalysts for oxidation and hydrogenation reactions were prepared using nearly the same synthetic strategy, and are easily recovered by magnetic separation from liquid phase reactions. The catalysts were found to be active in both forms, Ru(III) and Ru(0), for selective oxidation of alcohols and hydrogenation of olefins, respectively. The catalysts operate under mild conditions to activate molecular oxygen or molecular hydrogen to perform clean conversion of selected substrates. Aryl and alkyl alcohols were converted to aldehydes under mild conditions, with negligible metal leaching. If the metal is properly reduced, Ru(0) nanoparticles immobilized on the magnetic support surface are obtained, and the catalyst becomes active for hydrogenation reactions. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Glucaric acid (GA) is one of the building block chemicals derived from sugar biomass with higher added value. Nowadays, GA is produced by oxidation of glucose (Glu) with either stoichiometric oxidants (HNO3), or by means of electrochemical or biochemical synthesis. However, these processes show drawbacks from either the environmental or economic viewpoint. For this reason, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) supported on activated carbon (AC) have been studied as catalysts for the oxidation of Glu, using O2 as oxidant in the presence of a base. Using sol immobilization technique, Au NPs have been supported on AC following different experimental procedures. UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, TEM and TG analysis were utilized in the characterization of the catalysts. The operational conditions were optimized obtaining 24% of yield of GA, 37% to GO and 27% to byproducts in 1 h, 1000 rpm, 10 bar of O2 and Glu:Au:NaOH molar ratio of 1000:1:3000. Under such conditions, catalysts show relatively high Glu conversion (≥82%) with different GA yields. GO+GA yield is around 58-61%. Therefore, the oxidation reaction was performed at 15 min where Au/AC PVA0 reached the highest yield of GA (16%) and Au/AC PVA2.4 gave the lowest (8%). It is evident that the presence of PVA influences to a higher degree the reaction rate than the Au NPs size. Hence, the effect of different heat treatments where applied for the removal of PVA: washing with water at 60℃ or heat treatment (120-250℃) with Air/H2. Washing treatment and heat treatment at 120℃ with Air/H2 may have resulted in the mildest treatments for the removal of PVA. Finally, two different supports have been used in order to study the effect of metal-support interaction in the immobilization of Au NPs: ZrO2 and AC. Au/AC catalyst demonstrated a higher conversion of GO to GA at short reaction times (15.1% yield GA) compared to Au/ZrO2 (2.4% yield GA).

The principle that alloys are designed to accommodate the manufacture of goods made from them as much as the properties required of them in service has not been widely applied to pressed and sintered P/M aluminium alloys. Most commercial alloys made from mixed elemental blends are identical to standard wrought alloys. Alternatively, alloys can be designed systematically using the phase diagram characteristics of ideal liquid phase sintering systems. This requires consideration of the solubilities of the alloying elements in aluminium, the melting points of the elements, the eutectics they form with aluminium and the nature of the liquid phase. The relative diffusivities are also important. Here we show that Al-Sn, which closely follows these ideal characteristics, has a much stronger sintering response than either Al-Cu or Al-Zn, both of which have at least one non-ideal characteristic. The catalytic activity and durability of 2 wt.% Pd/Al2O3 in powder and washcoated on cordierite monoliths were examined for the liquid phase hydrodechlorination (LPHDC) of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), also known as dioxins. NaOH was employed as a neutralizing agent, and 2-propanol was used as a hydrogen donor and a solvent. Fresh and spent powder and monolith samples were characterized by elemental analysis, surface area, hydrogen chemisorption, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), and transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM/EDX). Three reactor configurations were compared including the slurry and monolith batch reactors as well as the bubble loop column resulting in 100, 70, and 72% sample toxicity reduction, respectively, after 5 h of reaction. However, the slurry and monolith batch reactors lead to catalyst sample loss via a filtration process (slurry) and washcoat erosion (monolith batch), as well as rapid deactivation of the powder catalyst samples. The monolith employed in the bubble loop column remained stable and active after four reaction runs. Three preemptive regeneration methods were evaluated on spent monolith catalyst including 2-propanol washing, oxidation/reduction, and reduction. All three procedures reactivated the spent catalyst samples, but the combustion methods proved to be more efficient at eliminating the more stable poisons.

We present the magnetic separation approach to facilitate the recovery of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) catalysts. The use of magnetically recoverable supports for the immobilization of AuNPs instead of traditional oxides, polymers or carbon based solids guarantees facile, clean, fast and efficient separation of the catalyst at the end of the reaction cycle. Magnetic separation can be considered an environmentally benign separation approach, since it minimizes the use of auxiliary substances and energy for achieving catalyst recovery. The catalyst preparation is based on the immobilization of Au(3+) on the surface of core-shell silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles, followed by metal reduction using two different methods. AuNPs were prepared by thermal reduction in air and by hydrogen reduction at mild temperature. Interestingly, the mean particle size of the supported AuNPs was similar (ca. 5.9 nm), but the polydispersity of the samples is quite different. The catalytic activity of both catalysts in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols was investigated and a distinct selectivity for benzyl alcohol oxidation was observed.

Yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics were sintered by liquid phase sintering at low temperatures using bioglass as sintering additive. ZrO2-bioglass ceramics were prepared by mixing a ZrO2 stabilized with 3 Mol%Y2O3 and different amounts of bioglass based on 3CaO center dot P2O5-MgO-SiO2 system. Mixtures were compacted by uniaxial cold pressing and sintered in air, at 1200 and 1300 degrees C for 120 min. The influence of the bioglass content on the densification, tetragonal phase stability, bending strength, hardness and fracture toughness was investigated. The ceramics sintered at 1300 degrees C and prepared by addition of 3% of bioglass, exhibited the highest strength of 435 MPa, hardness of 1170 HV and fracture toughness of 6.3 MPa m(1/2). These results are related to the low monoclinic phase content, high relative density and the presence of the thermal residual stress generated between the ZrO2-matrix and bioglass grain boundary, contributing to the activation of the toughening mechanisms. A selective method using three-phase liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) in conjunction with LC-MS-MS was devised for the enantioselective determination of chloroquine and its n-dealkylated metabolites in plasma samples. After alkalinization of the samples, the analytes were extracted into n-octanol immobilized in the pores of a polypropylene hollow fiber membrane and back extracted into the acidic acceptor phase (0.1 M TFA) filled into the lumen of the hollow fiber. Following LPME, the analytes were resolved on a Chirobiotic V column using methanol/ACN/glacial aceti acid/diethylamine (90:10:0.5:0.5 by volume) as the mobile phase. The MS detection was carried out using multiple reaction monitoring with ESI in the positive ion mode. The optimized LPME method yielded extraction recoveries ranging from 28 to 66%. The method was linear over 5 - 500 ng/mL and precision (RSD) and accuracy (relative error) values were below 15% for all analytes. The developed method was applied to the determination of the analytes in rat plasma samples after oral administration of the racemic drug.

A simple and rapid method, which involves liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) followed by HPLC analysis using Chiralpak AD column and UV detection, was developed for the enantioselective determination of mefloquine in plasma samples. Several factors that influence the efficiency of three-phase LPME were investigated and optimized. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the mean recoveries were 33.2 and 35.0% for (-)-(SR-)-mefloquine and (+)-(RS)-mefloquine, respectively. The method was linear over 50-1500 ng/ml range. Within-day and between-day assay precision and accuracy were below 15% for both enantiomers at concentrations of 150, 600 and 1200 ng/ml. Furthermore, no racemization or degradation were seen with the method described. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A three-phase liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) method using porous polypropylene hollow fibre membrane with a sealed end was developed for the extraction of mirtazapine (MRT) and its two major metabolites, 8-hydroxymirtazapine (8-OHM) and demethylmirtazapine (DMR), from human plasma. The analytes were extracted from 1.0 mL of plasma, previously diluted and alkalinized with 3.0 mL 0.5 mol L-1 pH 8 phosphate buffer solution and supplemented with 15% sodium chloride (NaCl), using n-hexyl ether as organic solvent and 0.01 moL L-1 acetic acid solution as the acceptor phase. Haloperidol was used as internal standard. The chromatographic analyses were carried out on a chiral column, using acetonitrile-methanol-ethanol (98:1:1, v/v/v) plus 0.2% diethylamine as mobile phase, at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min(-1). Multi-reaction monitoring (MRM) detection was performed by mass spectrometry (MS-MS) using a triple-stage quadrupole and electrospray ionization interface operating in the positive ion mode. The mean recoveries were in 18.3-45.5% range with linear responses over the 1.25-125 ng mL(-1) concentration range for all enantiomers evaluated. The quantification limit (LOQ) was 1.25 ng mL(-1). Within-day and between-day assay precision and accuracy (2.5, 50 and 100 ng mL(-1)) showed relative standard deviation and the relative error lower than 11.9% for all enantiomers evaluated. Finally, the method was successfully used for the determination of mirtazapine and its metabolite enantiomers in plasma samples obtained after single drug administration of mirtazapine to a healthy volunteer. An enantioselective liquid chromatographic method using two-phase hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME-HPLC) was developed for the determination of isradipine (ISR) enantiomers and its main metabolite (pyridine derivative of isradipine, PDI) in microsomal fractions isolated from rat liver. The analytes were extracted from 1 mL of microsomal medium using a two-phase HF-LPME procedure with hexyl acetate as the acceptor phase, 30 min of extraction, and sample agitation at 1,500 rpm. For the first time, ISR enantiomers and PDI were resolved. For this separation, a ChiralpakA (R) AD column with hexane/2-propanol/ethanol (94:04:02, v/v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.5 mL min(-1) was used. The column was kept at 23 A +/- 2 A degrees C. The drug and metabolite detection was performed at 325 nm and the internal standard oxybutynin was detected at 225 nm. The recoveries were 23% for PDI and 19% for each ISR enantiomer. The method presented quantification limits (LOQ) of 50 ng mL(-1) and was linear over the concentration range of 50-5,000 and 50-2,500 ng mL(-1) for PDI and each ISR enantiomer, respectively. The validated method was employed to an in vitro biotransformation study of ISR using rat liver microsomal fraction showing that (+)-(S)-ISR is preferentially biotransformed.

A three-phase hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction method for the analysis of rosiglitazone and its metabolites N-desmethyl rosiglitazone and p-hydroxy rosiglitazone in microsomal preparations is described for the first time. The drug and metabolites HPLC determination was carried out using an X-Terra RP-18 column, at 22 degrees C. The mobile phase was composed of water, acetonitrile and acetic acid (85:15:0.5, v/v/v) and the detection was performed at 245 nm. The hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction procedure was optimized using multifactorial experiments and the following optimal condition was established: sample agitation at 1750 rpm, extraction for 30 min, hydrochloric acid 0.01 mol/L as acceptor phase, 1-octanol as organic phase, and donor phase pH adjustment to 8.0. The recovery rates, obtained by using 1 mL of microsomal preparation, were 47-70%. The method presented LOQs of 50 ng/mL and it was linear over the concentration range of 50-6000 ng/mL, with correlation coefficients (r) higher than 0.9960, for all analytes. The validated method was employed to study the in vitro biotransformation of rosiglitazone using rat liver microsomal fraction.

A method for the determination of artemether (ART) and its main metabolite dihydroartemisinin (DHA) in plasma employing liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) for sample preparation prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) was developed. The analytes were extracted from 1 nil, of plasma utilizing a two-phase LPME procedure with artemisinin as internal standard. Using the optimized LPME conditions, mean absolute recovery rates of 25 and 32% for DHA and ART, respectively, were achieved using toluene-n-octanol (1:1, viv) as organic phase with an extraction time of 30 min. After extraction, the analytes were resolved within 5 min using a mobile phase consisting of methanol-ammonium acetate (10 mmol L(-1) pH 5.0, 80:20. v/v) on a laboratory-made column based on poly(methyltetradecylsiloxane) attached to a zirconized-silica support. MS-MS detection was employed using an electrospray interface in the positive ion mode. The method developed was linear over the range of 5-1000 ng mL(-1) for both analytes. Precision and accuracy were within acceptable levels of confidence (<15%). The assay was applied to the determination of these analytes in plasma from rats treated with ART. The two-phase LPME procedure is affordable and the solvent consumption was very low compared to the traditional methods of sample preparation. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A method for the simultaneous analysis of the enantiomers of mefloquine (MQ) and its main metabolite carboxymefloquine (CMQ) in plasma is described for the first time. The assay involves two-step liquid-phase micro-extraction (LPME) and enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography. In the first LPME step, the enantiomers of MQ were extracted from an alkalinized sample through a thin layer of di-n-hexyl ether immobilized in the pores of the hollow fiber and into 0.01 M perchloric acid as acceptor solution. In the second LPME step, the same sample was acidified to enable the extraction of CMQ using the same organic solvent and 0.05 M sodium hydroxide as acceptor phase. The analytes were resolved on a Chirobiotic T column in the polar-organic mode of elution and detected at 285 nm. The recovery rates from 1 mL of plasma were in the range 35-38%. The method presented limits of quantification of 50 ng/mL for all analytes and was linear up to 1,500 and 3,000 ng/mL for the enantiomers of MQ and CMQ, respectively. The plasmatic concentrations of (+)-(RS)-MQ were higher than those of (-)-(SR)-MQ after oral administration of the racemic drug to rats.
