The thesis aims to present the results of experimental investigations on the changes of optical properties of metallic thin films due to heating. The parameters which are measured are reflectivity, refractive indices and the ellipsometric quantities V and A . The materials used in the studies are metals like Silver, Aluminium and Copper. By applying the optical method the interdiffusion taking place in multilayer ‘films of Aluminium and Silver has also been studied. Special interest has been taken to reveal the mechanisms of the hillock growth and surface roughness caused by heating and their relation with the stress in the film

Adsorption of 4,4'-thiobisbenzenethiol (4,4'-TBBT) on a colloidal silver surface and a roughened silver electrode surface was investigated by means of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for the first time, which indicates that 4,4'-TBBT is chemisorbed on the colloidal silver surface as dithiolates by losing two H-atoms of the S-H bond, while as monothiolates on the roughened silver electrode. The different orientations of the molecules on both silver surfaces indicate the different adsorption behaviors of 4,4'-TBBT in the two systems.

Measurements have been made of the depolarisation factors \sigma u ,\sigma v ,\sigma h, and the intensity of scattering in the horizontal transverse direction, in the case of solutions of four different samples of chlorinated rubber in carbon tetrachloride. The size, shape and molecular weight of the micelles have been deduced by the application of the light scattering theories of Gans, Vrklajan and Katalinic and Debye. The extent to which the degradation of the rubber molecule occurs on chlorination has also been assessed.

The biocatalytic growth of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) has been employed in the design of new optical biosensors based on the enhanced resonance light scattering (RLS) signals. Both absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed Au-NP seeds could be effectively enlarged upon the reaction with H2O2, an important metabolite that could be generated by many biocatalytic reactions.

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the neutron Compton profile, J(y), for Be and for D in polycrystalline ZrD2 over a range of momentum transfers, q between 27 and 178 °A−1. The measurements were performed using the inverse geometry spectrometer eVS which is situated at the UK pulsed spallation neutron source ISIS. We have investigated deviations from impulse approximation (IA) scattering which are generically referred to as final state effects (FSEs) using a method described by Sears. This method allows both the magnitude and the q dependence of the FSE to be studied. Analysis of the measured data was compared with analysis of numerical simulations based on the harmonic approximation and good agreement was found for both ZrD2 and Be. Finally we have shown how (∇2V), where V is the interatomic potential, can be extracted from the antisymmetric component of J(y).

In the thin-film photovoltaic industry, to achieve a high light scattering in one or more of the cell interfaces is one of the strategies that allow an enhancement of light absorption inside the cell and, therefore, a better device behavior and efficiency. Although chemical etching is the standard method to texture surfaces for that scattering improvement, laser light has shown as a new way for texturizing different materials, maintaining a good control of the final topography with a unique, clean, and quite precise process. In this work AZO films with different texture parameters are fabricated. The typical parameters used to characterize them, as the root mean square roughness or the haze factor, are discussed and, for deeper understanding of the scattering mechanisms, the light behavior in the films is simulated using a finite element method code. This method gives information about the light intensity in each point of the system, allowing the precise characterization of the scattering behavior near the film surface, and it can be used as well to calculate a simulated haze factor that can be compared with experimental measurements. A discussion of the validation of the numerical code, based in a comprehensive comparison with experimental data is included.

Cell-material interactions are crucial for cell adhesion and proliferation on biomaterial surfaces. Immobilization of biomolecules leads to the formation of biomimetic substrates, improving cell response. We introduced RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) sequences on poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) film surfaces using thiol chemistry to enhance Schwann cell (SC) response. XPS elemental analysis indicated an estimate of 2-3% peptide functionalization on the PCL surface, comparable with carbodiimide chemistry. Contact angle was not remarkably reduced; hence, cell response was only affected by chemical cues on the film surface. Adhesion and proliferation of Schwann cells were enhanced after PCL modification. Particularly, RGD immobilization increased cell attachment up to 40% after 6 h of culture. It was demonstrated that SC morphology changed from round to very elongated shape when surface modification was carried out, with an increase in the length of cellular processes up to 50% after 5 days of culture. Finally RGD immobilization triggered the formation of focal adhesion related to higher cell spreading. In summary, this study provides a method for immobilization of biomolecules on PCL films to be used in peripheral nerve repair, as demonstrated by the enhanced response of Schwann cells.

Dynamic light scattering measurements have been made to elucidate changes in the coil conformation of a high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) fraction when the non-ionic surfactant C(12)E(5) is present in dilute solutions. The measurements were made at 20 degrees C as functions of(a) the C(12)E(5) concentration at constant PEO concentration, (b) the PEO concentration at constant C(12)E(5) concentration, and (c) the C(12)E(5)/PEO concentration ratio. The influence of temperature on the interactions in terms of the relaxation time distributions was also examined up to the cloud point. It was found that when the C(12)E(5)/PEO weight ratio was >2 and when the temperature was >14 degrees C, the correlation functions became bimodal with well-separated components. The fast mode derives fi om individual surfactant micelles which are present in the solution at high number density. The appearance of the slow mode, which dominates the scattering, is interpreted as resulting from the formation of micellar clusters due to an excluded-volume effect when the high molar mass (M = 6 x 10(5)) PEO is added to the surfactant solution. It is shown that the micellar clusters form within the PEO coils and lead to a progressive swelling of the latter for steric reasons. The dimensions of the PEO/C(12)E(5) complex increase with increasing surfactant concentration to a value of R(H) approximate to 94 nm (R(g) approximate to 208 nm) at C-C12E5 = 3.5%. Fluorescence quenching measurements show that the average aggregation number of C(12)E(5) increases significantly on addition of the high molar mass PEG. With increasing temperature toward the cloud point the clusters increase in number density and/or become larger. The cloud point is substantially lower than that for C12E5 in water solution and is strongly dependent on the PEO concentration.

Both absolute molecular weight and molecular sizes (radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius) of a vinyl-type polynorbornene eluting from size-exclusion chromatography columns were determined by combined with a static and dynamic laser light scattering detector. The hydrodynamic radius of polymer fraction eluting from size-exclusion chromatography columns was obtained from dynamic laser light scattering measurements at only a single angle of 900 by introducing a correction factor. According to the scaling relationship between molecular sizes and molecular weight and the ratio between radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius, the vinyl-type polynorbornene took a random coil conformation in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 150 degreesC.
Laser light-scattering study of novel thermoplastics .2. Phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C)
Resumo:
Five narrowly distributed fractions of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C) were studied in CHCl3 by both static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS) at 25 degrees C. The dynamic LLS showed that the PES-C samples contain some large polymer clusters as in previously studied phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone)(PEK-C). These large clusters can be removed by a 0.1-mu m filter. Our results showed that [R(g)(2)](1/2)(z) = (3.35 +/- 0.13) x 10(-2) M(w)((0.52 +/- 0.03)) and [D] = (2.26 +/- 0.02) x 10(-4)M(w)-((0.54) +/- 0.03)) with [R(g)(2)](1/2)(z), M(w) and [D] being the z-average radius of gyration, the weight-average molecular weight, and the z-average translational diffusion coefficient, respectively. A combination of static and dynamic LLS results enabled us to determine D = (2.45 +/- 0.04) x 10(-4)M-((0.55 +/- 0.05)), where D and M correspond to monodisperse species. Using this scaling relationship, we have successfully converted the translational diffusion coefficient distribution into the molecular weight distribution for each of the five PES-C fractional The weight-average molecular weights obtained from dynamic light scattering have a good agreement with that obtained from static laser light-scattering measurements.

An amperometric biosensor for salicylate detection was developed by immobilizing salicylate hydroxylase via glutaraldehyde onto a polypyrrole film doped with hexacyanoferrate, supported on a glassy carbon electrode surface. The sensor monitors the catechol produced in the enzymatic reaction on the film surface, at an applied potential of 150 mV vs. SCE. A [NADH]/[salicylate] ratio between 2 and 4 gave the best response. The biosensor presented the best performance in a solution with pH=7.4. The response time was about 40 s. A linear range of response was observed for salicylate concentrations between 1.0x10(-5) and 1.0x10(-4) mol l(-1) and the equation adjusted for this curve was I=(-0.04+/-0.01)+(11.4+/-0.2)[salicylate] with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 for n=6. The biosensor retains its activity for at least 10 days despite daily use. The results obtained using the biosensor for salicylate determination, in three different samples of antithermic drugs, presented a good correlation with the standard colorimetric method.

Protein functional motions are ultimately connected to water dynamics. The goal of this study is to link the conformational dynamics of albumin to a dynamic transition taking place at ∼ 42°C in water. We report the results of dynamic light scattering measurements of albumin aqueous solution in the temperature interval 20-65°C. The processing of the experimental data produced the temperature dependence of the macromolecular hydrodynamic radius. We demonstrate that the growth of the macromolecular size in this temperature range can be divided into two stages that are connected to the dynamical properties of water. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The critical behavior of osmotic susceptibility in an aqueous electrolyte mixture 1-propanol (1P)+water (W)+potassium chloride is reported. This mixture exhibits re-entrant phase transitions and has a nearly parabolic critical line with its apex representing a double critical point (DCP). The behavior of the susceptibility exponent is deduced from static light-scattering measurements, on approaching the lower critical solution temperatures (TL’s) along different experimental paths (by varying t) in the one-phase region. The light-scattering data analysis substantiates the existence of a nonmonotonic crossover behavior of the susceptibility exponent in this mixture. For the TL far away from the DCP, the effective susceptibility exponent γeff as a function of t displays a nonmonotonic crossover from its single limit three-dimensional (3D)-Ising value ( ∼ 1.24) toward its mean-field value with increase in t. While for that closest to the DCP, γeff displays a sharp, nonmonotonic crossover from its nearly doubled 3D-Ising value toward its nearly doubled mean-field value with increase in t. The renormalized Ising regime extends over a relatively larger t range for the TL closest to the DCP, and a trend toward shrinkage in the renormalized Ising regime is observed as TL shifts away from the DCP. Nevertheless, the crossover to the mean-field limit extends well beyond t>10−2 for the TL’s studied. The observed crossover behavior is attributed to the presence of strong ion-induced clustering in this mixture, as revealed by various structure probing techniques. As far as the critical behavior in complex or associating mixtures with special critical points (like the DCP) is concerned, our results indicate that the influence of the DCP on the critical behavior must be taken into account not only on the renormalization of the critical exponent but also on the range of the Ising regime, which can shrink with decrease in the influence of the DCP and with the extent of structuring in the system. The utility of the field variable tUL in analyzing re-entrant phase transitions is demonstrated. The effective susceptibility exponent as a function of tUL displays a nonmonotonic crossover from its asymptotic 3D-Ising value toward a value slightly lower than its nonasymptotic mean-field value of 1. This behavior in the nonasymptotic, high tUL region is interpreted in terms of the possibility of a nonmonotonic crossover to the mean-field value from lower values, as foreseen earlier in micellar systems.

The main goal of this thesis is to show the versatility of glancing angle deposition (GLAD) thin films in applications. This research is first focused on studying the effect of select deposition variables in GLAD thin films and secondly, to demonstrate the flexibility of GLAD films to be incorporated in two different applications: (1) as a reflective coating in low-level concentration photovoltaic systems, and (2) as an anode structure in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). A particular type of microstructure composed of tilted micro-columns of titanium is fabricated by GLAD. The microstructures form elongated and fan-like tilted micro-columns that demonstrate anisotropic scattering. The thin films texture changes from fiber texture to tilted fiber texture by increasing the vapor incidence angle. At very large deposition angles, biaxial texture forms. The morphology of the thin films deposited under extreme shadowing condition and at high temperature (below recrystallization zone) shows a porous and inclined micro-columnar morphology, resulting from the dominance of shadowing over adatom surface diffusion. The anisotropic scattering behavior of the tilted Ti thin film coatings is quantified by bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) measurements and is found to be consistent with reflectance from the microstructure acting as an array of inclined micro-mirrors that redirect the incident light in a non-specular reflection. A silver-coating of the surface of the tilted-Ti micro-columns is performed to enhance the total reflectance of the Ti-thin films while keeping the anisotropic scattering behavior. By using such coating is as a booster reflector in a laboratory-scale low-level concentration photovoltaic system, the short-circuit current of the reference silicon solar cell by 25%. Finally, based on the scattering properties of the tilted microcolumnar microstructure, its scattering effect is studied as a part of titanium dioxide microstructure for the anode in DSSCs. GLAD-fabricated TiO2 microstructures for the anode in a DSSC, consisting of vertical micro-columns, and combined vertical topped with tilted micro-columns are compared. The solar cell with the two-part microstructure shows the highest monochromatic incident photon to current efficiency with 20% improvement compared to the vertical microstructure, and the efficiency of the cell increases from 1.5% to 2% due to employing the scattering layer.
