Neutral and cationic organometallic ruthenium(II) piano stool complexes of the type [(eta(6)-cymene)R-uCl(X)(Y)] (complexes R1-R8) has been synthesized and characterized. In cationic complexes, X, Y is either a eta(2) phosphorus ligand such as 1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (DPPM) and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE) or partially oxidized ligands such as 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane monooxide (DPPMO) and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane monooxide (DPPEO) which are strong hydrogen bond acceptors. In neutral complexes. X is chloride and Y is a monodentate phosphorous donor. Complexes with DPPM and DPPMO ligands ([(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(2)-DPPM)Cl]PF6 (R2), [(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(2)-DPPMO)Cl]PF6 (R3), [(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(1)-DPPM)Cl-2] (R5) and [(eta(6)-cymene)Ru(eta(1)-DPPMO)Cl-2] (R6) show good cytotoxicity. Growth inhibition study of several human cancer cell lines by these complexes has been carried out. Mechanistic studies for R5 and R6 show that inhibition of cancer cell growth involves both cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction. Using an apoptosis PCR array, we identified the sets of antiapoptotic genes that were down regulated and pro-apoptotic genes that were up regulated. These complexes were also found to be potent metastasis inhibitors as they prevented cell invasion through matrigel. The complexes were shown to bind DNA in a non intercalative fashion and cause unwinding of plasmid DNA in cell-free medium by competitive ethidium bromide binding, viscosity measurements, thermal denaturation and gel mobility shift assays.

The half-sandwhich ruthenium chloro complexes bearing chelated diphosphazane ligands, [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl{kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] [R = C6H3Me2-2,6] (1) and [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuCl{kappa(2)-P, P-X2PN(R)PYY'}] [R = Me, X = Y = Y' = OC6H5 (2); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = Y' = OC6H5 (3) or OC6H4'Bu-4 (4)] have been prepared by the reaction of CpRu(PPh3)(2)Cl with (RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2) [R = C6H3Me2-2,6 (L-1)] or by the reaction of [Cp*RuCl2](n) with X2PN(R)PYY' in the presence of zinc dust. Among the four diastereomers (two enantiomeric pairs) possible for the "chiral at metal" complexes 3 and 4, only two diastereomers (one enantiomeric pair) are formed in these reactions. The complexes 1, 2, 4 and [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl {kappa(2)-P,P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)] [Y = Ph (5) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)-(6)] react with NaOMe to give the corresponding hydride complexes [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] (7), [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P'-X2PN(R)PY2)] [R = Me, X = Y = OC6H5 (8); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = OC6H4'Bu-4 (9)] and [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH(kappa(2)-P, P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)][Y =Ph (10) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)(11a) and (SCSPSRu)-(11b)]. Only one enantiomeric pair of the hydride 9 is obtained from the chloro precursor 4 that bears sterically bulky substituents at the phosphorus centers. On the other hand, the optically pure trichiral complex 6 that bears sterically less bulky substituents at the phosphorus gives a mixture of two diastereomers (11a and 11b). Protonation of complex 7 using different acids (HX) gives a mixture of [(eta(5)- Cp)Ru(eta(2)-H-2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2))]X (12a) and [(eta(5)-Cp)Ru(H)(2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}]X (12b) of which 12a is the major product independent of the acid used; the dihydrogen nature of 12a is established by T, measurements and also by synthesizing the deuteride analogue 7-D followed by protonation to obtain the D-H isotopomer. Preliminary investigations on asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of 2-acetonaphthone in the presence of a series of chiral diphosphazane ligands show that diphosphazanes in which the phosphorus centers are strong pi-acceptor in character and bear sterically bulky substituents impart moderate levels of enantioselectivity. Attempts to identify the hydride intermediate involved in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation by a model reaction suggests that a complex of the type, [Ru(H)(Cl){kappa(2)-P,P-X2PN(R)PY2)(solvent)(2)] could be the active species in this transformation. A facile synthetic route for a new class of organoborane compounds (Mes)(2)B-arene-acacH and (Mes)(2)Barene-acacBF2 (Mes = mesityl and arene = C6H4 or C6Me4) is reported. The new dyads exhibit intriguing photophysical properties. A small structural change in spacer connecting the two chromophores leads to fine tuning of photophysical properties. The dyad containing 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl phenyl spacer acts as a selective ``turn-on'' chemodosimetric sensor for cyanide ion. Steric crowding around the boron centre significantly alters anion binding events. From NMR titration studies it is established that fluoride and cyanide follow different binding mechanisms which lead to intriguing optical properties in the reported probes.

Two major topics are covered: the first chapter is focused on the development of post-metallocene complexes for propylene polymerization. The second and third chapters investigate the consequences of diisobutylaluminum hydride (HAliBu2) additives in zirconocene based polymerization systems.
The synthesis, structure, and solution behavior of early metal complexes with a new tridentate LX2 type ligand, bis(thiophenolate)pyridine ((SNS) = (2-C6H4S)2-2,6-C5H3N) are investigated. SNS complexes of Ti, Zr, and Ta having dialkylamido coligands were synthesized and structurally characterized. The zirconium complex, (SNS)Zr(NMe2)2, displays C2 symmetry in the solid state. Solid-state structures of tantalum complexes (SNS)Ta(NMe2)3 and (SNS)TaCl(NEt2)2 also display pronounced C2 twisting of the SNS ligand. 1D and 2D NMR experiments show that (SNS)Ta(NMe2)3 is fluxional with rotation about the Ta N(amide) bonds occurring on the NMR timescale. The fluxional behavior of (SNS)TaCl(NEt2)2 in solution was also studied by variable temperature 1H NMR. Observation of separate signals for the diastereotopic protons of the methylene unit of the diethylamide indicates that the complex remains locked on the NMR timescale in one diastereomeric conformation at temperatures below -50 °C.
Reduction of Zr(IV) metallocenium cations with sodium amalgam (NaHg) produces EPR signals assignable to Zr(III) metallocene complexes. Thus, chloro-bridged heterobinuclear ansa-zirconocenium cation [((SBI))Zr(μ-Cl)2AlMe2]+B(C6F5)4¯ (SBI = rac-dimethylsilylbis(1-indenyl)), gives rise to an EPR signal assignable to the complex (SBI)ZrIII(μ-Cl)2AlMe2, while (SBI)ZrIII-Me and (SBI)ZrIII(-H)2AliBu2 are formed by reduction of [(SBI)Zr(μ-Me)2AlMe2]+B(C6F5)4¯ and [(SBI)Zr(μ-H)3(AliBu2)2]+B(C6F5)4¯, respectively. These products are also formed, along with (SBI)ZrIII-iBu and [(SBI)ZrIII]+ AlR4¯ when (SBI)ZrMe2 reacts with HAliBu2, eliminating isobutane en route to the Zr(III) complex. Studies concerning the interconversion reactions between these and other (SBI)Zr(III) complexes and reaction mechanisms involved in their formation are also reported.
The addition of HAliBu2 to precatalyst [(SBI)Zr(µ-H)3(AliBu2)2]+ significantly slows the polymerization of propylene and changes the kinetics of polymerization from 1st to 2nd order with respect to propylene. This is likely due to competitive inhibition by HAliBu2. When the same reaction is investigated using [(nBuCp)2Zr(μ-H)3(AliBu2)2]+, hydroalumination between propylene and HAliBu2 is observed instead of propylene polymerization.

A series of salicylaldimine-based neutral Ni(II) complexes (3a-j) [ArN = CH(C6H40)]Ni(PPh3)Ph [3a,Ar = C6H5; 3b,Ar = C6H4F(o); 3c, Ar = C6H4F(m); 3d, Ar = C6H4F(p); 3e, Ar = C6H3F2(2,4); 3f, Ar = C6H3F2(2,5); 3g, Ar = C6H3F2(2,6); 3h, Ar = C6H3F2(3,5); 3i, Ar = C6H2F3(3,4,5); 3j, Ar = C6H5] have been synthesized in good yield, and the structures of complexes 3a and 3i have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Using modified methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst, these neutral Ni(II) complexes exhibited high catalytic activities for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene.

A series of oligoaniline-functionalized mono- and bis-topic terpyridine ligands, i.e. C6H5[N(R)C6H4](n)TPY (R = H, butyl, tert-butyloxycarbonyl; n = 1-4; TPY = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridyl) and TPYC6H4[N(R)C6H4](m)TPY (R = H, tert-butyloxycarbonyl; m = 2, 4), and the corresponding monoand bis-nuclear ruthenium(II) complexes have been synthesized and verified. The spectroscopic results indicate that two kinds of pi-pi* transitions from TPY and oligoaniline fragments of ligands strongly shift to lower energy, and the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition ((MLCT)-M-1) bands of all obtained complexes are considerably red-shifted (Delta lambda(max) = 22-64 nm) and their intensities become much more intense (approximately 4-6 times), compared with those of the reported complex [Ru(TPY)(2)](2+). Moreover, the spectroscopic properties of the ligands and complexes with longer oligoaniline units (n = 3, 4) are markedly influenced by the external stimulus, such as the oxidation and proton acid doping.

A series of new titanium complexes bearing two regioisomeric trifluoromethyl-containing enaminoketonato ligands (3a-h and 6a-h), [PhN=CRCHC(CF3)O](2)TiCl2 (3a, R = Me; 3b, R = n-C5H11; 3c, R = i-Pr; 3d, R = Cy; 3e, R = t-Bu; 3f, R = CH=CHPh; 3g, R = Et; 3h, R = n-C11H23) and [PhN=C(CF3)CHC(R)O](2)TiCl2 (6a, R = Ph; 6b, R = n-C5H11; 6c, R = i-Pr; 6d, R = Cy; 6e, R = t-Bu; 6f, R = CH=CHPh; 6g, R = CHPh2; 6h, R = CF3) have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray crystal structures analyses suggest that complexes 3c-e and 6c-d all adopt a distorted octahedral geometry around the titanium center. Complexes 3c, 3d and 6c display a cis-configuration of the two chlorine atoms around the titanium center, while complex 6d shows a trans-configuration of the two chlorine atoms. Especially, the configurational isomers (cis and trans) of complex 3e were identified both in solution and in the solid state by NMR and X-ray analyses. With modified methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst, all the complexes are active towards ethylene polymerization, and produce high molecular weight polymers.

A series of chromium(III) complexes LCrCl3 (4a-c) bearing chelating 2,2'-iminodiphenyisulfide ligands [L = (2-ArMeC=NAr)(2)S] was synthesized in good yields from the corresponding ligands and CrCl3.(THF). Using modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display moderate activities towards ethylene polymerization, and produce highly linear polyethylenes with broad molecular weight distribution. Polymer yields, catalyst activities and the molecular weights, as well as the molecular weight distributions of the polymers can be controlled over a wide range by the variation of the structures of the chromium(III) complexes and the polymerization parameters, such as Al/Cr molar ratio, reaction temperature and ethylene pressure.

A series of titanium and zirconium complexes based on aminoiminophosphorane ligands [Ph2P(Nt-Bu)(NR)](2)MCl2 (4, M = Ti, R = Ph; 5, M = Zr, R = Ph; 6, M = Ti, R = SiMe3; 7, M = Zr, R = SiMe3) have been synthesized by the reaction of the ligands with TiCl4 and ZrCl4. The structure of complex 4 has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The observed very weak interaction between Ti and P suggests partial pi-electron delocalization through both Ti and P. The complexes 4-7 are inactive for ethylene polymerization in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) or i-Bu3Al-Ph3CB(C6F5)(4) under atmospheric pressure, and is probably the result of low monomer ethylene concentration and steric congestion around the central metal.

Reactions of Rh and Ir hydrido complexes. [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(solv)(EtOH)]ClO4 (solv = Me2CO, 1a; EtOH, 1b) and [Ir(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(Me2CO)(2)]BF4 (2), with various N,N'-donor bridging ligands, such as pyrazine (pyz), 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (tmdp) and di(4-pyridyl) disulfide (dpds), in some solvents were examined, and their reaction products were characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis. IR, H-1 NMR and UV-vis spectra. Rh hydrido complexes, la or 1b, formed a dinuclear Rh complex, [Rh-2(PPh3)(2) {(eta(6)-C6H5PPh2}(2)] (ClO4)(2).6CH(2)Cl(2) (3.6CH(2)Cl(2)), in dichloromethane with a reductive elimination of hydrogen. The reactions of 1a or 1b with the pyz ligand in dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran gave triangular Rh-3 complexes, [Rh-3(PPh3)(6)(pyz)(3)](ClO4)(3).CH2Cl2 (5.CH2Cl2) and [Rh-3(PPh3)(6)(pyz)(3)](ClO4)(3).EtOH (5.EtOH), respectively, in contrast to the formation of a dinuclear Rh hydrido complex, [Rh-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(Me2CO)(2)(pyz)](ClO4)(2).EtOH A-EtOH). in acetone. The reactions of la or 1b with the tmdp ligand in dichloromethane and 3-methyl-2-butanone also afforded dinuclear Rh complexes, [Rh-2(PPh3)(4)(tmdp)(2)](ClO4)(2) (6) and [Rh-2(PPh3)(4)(tmdp)(2)](ClO4)(2).4MeCOCHMe(2) (6.4MeCOCHMe(2)), respectively. On the other hand, Ir hydrido complex 2 reacted with pyz and dpds ligands in dichloromethane to afford dinuclear Ir complexes, [Ir-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(Me2CO)(2)(pyz)]- (BF4)(2).3CH(2)Cl(2) (7.3CH(2)Cl(2)) and [Ir-2(H)(4)(PPh3)(4)(dpds)(2)](BF4)(2).3CH(2)Cl(2).H2O (8.3CH(2)Cl(2).H2O), respectively, without any reductive elimination of hydrogen. Based on structural studies in solution and in the solid state. it was demonstrated that various Rh and Ir complexes were selectively produced depending on the choice of solvents and N,N'-donor bridging ligands.
