BACKGROUND: Most information about the lifetime prevalence of mental disorders comes from retrospective surveys, but how much these surveys have undercounted due to recall failure is unknown. We compared results from a prospective study with those from retrospective studies. METHOD: The representative 1972-1973 Dunedin New Zealand birth cohort (n=1037) was followed to age 32 years with 96% retention, and compared to the national New Zealand Mental Health Survey (NZMHS) and two US National Comorbidity Surveys (NCS and NCS-R). Measures were research diagnoses of anxiety, depression, alcohol dependence and cannabis dependence from ages 18 to 32 years. RESULTS: The prevalence of lifetime disorder to age 32 was approximately doubled in prospective as compared to retrospective data for all four disorder types. Moreover, across disorders, prospective measurement yielded a mean past-year-to-lifetime ratio of 38% whereas retrospective measurement yielded higher mean past-year-to-lifetime ratios of 57% (NZMHS, NCS-R) and 65% (NCS). CONCLUSIONS: Prospective longitudinal studies complement retrospective surveys by providing unique information about lifetime prevalence. The experience of at least one episode of DSM-defined disorder during a lifetime may be far more common in the population than previously thought. Research should ask what this means for etiological theory, construct validity of the DSM approach, public perception of stigma, estimates of the burden of disease and public health policy.

We present measurements of the linear polarization amplitudes and the strong relative phases that describe the flavor-untagged decays Bd0→J/ψK*0 and Bs0→J/ψ in the transversity basis. We also measure the mean lifetime τ̄s of the Bs0 mass eigenstates and the lifetime ratio τ̄s/τd. The analyses are based on approximately 2.8fb-1 of data recorded with the D0 detector. From our measurements of the angular parameters we conclude that there is no evidence for a deviation from flavor SU(3) symmetry for these decays and that the factorization assumption is not valid for the Bd0→J/ψK*0 decay. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

In the present study, the effect of iodine concentration on the photovoltaic properties of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) based on TiO2 nanoparticles for three different ratios of lithium iodide (LiI) and iodine (I-2) has been investigated. The electron transport properties and interfacial recombination kinetics have been evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is found that increasing the concentration of lithium iodide for all ratios of iodine and lithium iodide decreases the open-circuit voltage (V-oc) whereas short circuit current density (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) shows improvement. The reduction in V-oc and increment in J(sc) is ascribed to the higher concentration of absorptive Li+ cations which shifts the conduction band edge of TiO2 positively. The increase in FF is due to the reduction in electron transport resistance (R-omega) of the cell. In addition for all the ratios of LiI/I-2 increasing the concentration of I-2 decreases the V-oc which is attributed to the increased recombination with tri-iodide ions (I-3(-)) as verified from the low recombination resistance (R-k) and electron lifetime (tau) values obtained by EIS analysis. Two-photon excitation enabled for the first time the observation and measurement of excited state fluorescence lifetimes from three flavanols in solution, which were ∼1.0 ns for catechin and epicatechin, but <45 ps for epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The shorter lifetime for EGCG is in line with a lower fluorescence quantum yield of 0.003 compared to catechin (0.015) and epicatechin (0.018). In vivo experiments with onion cells demonstrated that tryptophan and quercetin, which tend to be major contributors of background fluorescence in plant cells, have sufficiently low cross sections for two-photon excitation at 630 nm and therefore do not interfere with detection of externally added or endogenous flavanols in Allium cepa or Taxus baccata cells. Applying two-photon excitation to flavanols enabled 3-D fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy and showed that added EGCG penetrated the whole nucleus of onion cells. Interestingly, EGCG and catechin showed different lifetime behaviour when bound to the nucleus: EGCG lifetime increased from <45 to 200 ps, whilst catechin lifetime decreased from 1.0 ns to 500 ps. Semi-quantitative measurements revealed that the relative ratios of EGCG concentrations in nucleoli associated vesicles: nucleus: cytoplasm were ca. 100:10:1. Solution experiments with catechin, epicatechin and histone proteins provided preliminary evidence, via the appearance of a second lifetime (τ2 = 1.9–3.1 ns), that both flavanols may be interacting with histone proteins. We conclude that there is significant nuclear absorption of flavanols. This advanced imaging using two-photon excitation and biophysical techniques described here will prove valuable for probing the intracellular trafficking and functions of flavanols, such as EGCG, which is the major flavanol of green tea.

Introduction: Obesity is an epidemic in the United States, especially among Hispanics and African-Americans. Studies of obesity and breast cancer risk and subtype have been conducted primarily in non-Hispanic whites. Obesity is inversely associated with premenopausal breast cancer, but both obesity and weight gain increase the risk of postmenopausal disease. Obesity has been associated with breast cancer subtype in many studies. Methods: To assess the association between changes in body mass index (BMI) over the lifetime, weight gain, and breast cancer in Mexican-American women, we conducted a case-control study using 149 cases and 330 age-matched controls. In a second study, we identified 212 African-American and 167 Mexican-American women with breast cancer in the ongoing ELLA Bi-National Breast Cancer Study, abstracted medical charts to classify tumors as ER+/PR+, HER2+, or ER-/PR-/HER2-, and assessed the association between lifetime changes in body mass index, weight gain, and breast cancer subtype. In both studies, growth mixture modeling was use to identify trajectories of change in BMI over the lifetime, and these trajectories were used as exposures in a logistic regression model to calculate odds ratios (OR). Results: There was no association between trajectories of change in BMI and breast cancer risk in Mexican-American women. In addition, BMI at ages 15 and 30 and at diagnosis was not associated with breast cancer. However, adult weight gain was inversely associated with breast cancer risk (per 5kg, OR=0.92, 95% CI: 0.85-0.99). The case-only analysis found no association between obesity at ages 15 and 30 and at diagnosis and breast cancer subtype. Further, there was no association between adult weight gain (defined as weight change from age 15 to time of diagnosis) and breast cancer subtype. Conclusions: Obesity was not associated with breast cancer risk in Mexican-American women, while adult weight gain reduced the risk independently of menopausal status. These results are contradictory of those in non-Hispanic white women and suggest that the etiology of breast cancer may differ by race/ethnicity. Further, obesity was not associated with breast cancer subtype in African-American and Mexican-American women, contrary to results in non-Hispanic white women. ^

We report new data on oxygen isotopes in marine sulfate (delta18O[SO4]), measured in marine barite (BaSO4), over the Cenozoic. The delta18O[SO4] varies by 6x over the Cenozoic, with major peaks 3, 15, 30 and 55 Ma. The delta18O[SO4] does not co-vary with the delta18O[SO4], emphasizing that different processes control the oxygen and sulfur isotopic composition of sulfate. This indicates that temporal changes in the delta18O[SO4] over the Cenozoic must reflect changes in the isotopic fractionation associated with the sulfide reoxidation pathway. This suggests that variations in the aerial extent of different types of organic-rich sediments may have a significant impact on the biogeochemical sulfur cycle and emphasizes that the sulfur cycle is less sensitive to net organic carbon burial than to changes in the conditions of that organic carbon burial. The delta18O[SO4] also does not co-vary with the d18O measured in benthic foraminifera, emphasizing that oxygen isotopes in water and sulfate remain out of equilibrium over the lifetime of sulfate in the ocean. A simple box model was used to explore dynamics of the marine sulfur cycle with respect to both oxygen and sulfur isotopes over the Cenozoic. We interpret variability in the delta18O[SO4] to reflect changes in the aerial distribution of conditions within organic-rich sediments, from periods with more localized, organic-rich sediments, to periods with more diffuse organic carbon burial. While these changes may not impact the net organic carbon burial, they will greatly affect the way that sulfur is processed within organic-rich sediments, impacting the sulfide reoxidation pathway and thus the delta18O[SO4]. Our qualitative interpretation of the record suggests that sulfate concentrations were probably lower earlier in the Cenozoic.

We studied Mg/Ca in high-Mg, shallow-water benthic foraminifera in culture and in samples from natural environments, in order to evaluate the expression of latitudinal and seasonal temperature variability in Mg/Ca in their tests. We cultured Planoglabratella opercularis (d'Orbigny) and Quinqueloculina yabei Asano under controlled temperature (10°-25°C) and salinity (30-38) conditions. Both species show a linear correlation between Mg/Ca and temperature, but they differ in temperature sensitivity. Salinity does not significantly influence Mg/Ca. In the samples collected in nature, Mg/Ca and seawater temperatures are positively correlated, but there are more complexities than in the records for cultured specimens due to such factors as seasonal fluctuations in temperature. We conclude that Mg/Ca ratios in monospecific benthic foraminiferal samples may be used as a reliable temperature proxy, if the lifetime of the species is taken into account.

Ionic interactions to stabilize Langmuir films at the air/water interface have been used to develop improved duolayer films. Two-component mixtures of octadecanoic (stearic) acid and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (polyDADMAC) with different ratios were prepared and applied to the water surface. Surface pressure isotherm cycles demonstrated a significant improvement in film stability with the inclusion of the polymer. Viscoelastic properties were measured using canal viscometry and oscillating barriers, with both methods showing that the optimum ratio for improved properties was four octadecanoic acid molecules to one DADMAC unit (1:0.25). At this ratio it is expected multiple strong ionic interactions are formed along each polymer chain. Brewster angle microscopy showed decreased domain size with increased ratios of polyDADMAC, indicating that the polymer is interspersed across the surface. This new method to stabilize and increase the viscoelastic properties of charged monolayer films, using a premixed composition, will have application in areas such as water evaporation mitigation, optical devices, and foaming.
