Gallium is an important material used in the electronic industry whose demand in the world market is increasing in view of its potential applications. A selective technique is required to allow for the production of the metal, separated from aluminium. Due to the fact that microemulsions constitute an attractive alternative to metal extraction procedures, microemulsified systems have been employed as gallium-selective extraction agents. Two surfactants have been synthesized: sodium 12-N,N-diethylamino-9,10-dihydroxyestearate (AMINE) and saponified coconut oil (SCO), both produced from raw materials readily available in Northeastern Brazil. Also, the commercial extraction agent KELEX-100, conventionally used with the same purpose, has been used in this work for comparison. The optimization of the extraction process with microemulsions was carried out by investigating the influence of some parameters, namely the type of cosurfactant, the cosurfactant/surfactant (C/S) ratio, the pH and concentration of metals in the aqueous phase. Pseudoternary diagrams, which are representative of the microemulsified systems under study, have been constructed in order to establish the boundaries of the regions where the several Winsor systems are formed. An experimental planning methodology (Scheffé Net) has been used to optimize the extraction. The extraction percentage values were as high as 100% for gallium and 99.99% for aluminium for the system with KELEX-100; 96.6% for gallium and 98.8% for aluminium for the system containing AMINE; and 88% for gallium and 85% for aluminium for the system with SCO. The microemulsified system chosen for presenting the best results in gallium extraction was composed by SCO/isoamyl alcohol/kerosene/Bayer licquor with a C/S ratio of 28 and pH of the original aqueous phase of 6.0. The selectivity that has not been observed in the extraction stage was accomplished in the reextraction process using HCl. For the KELEX-100 system, gallium was reextracted at 100% with 6M HCl and aluminium was reextracted at 100% with 0.8M HCl. For the AMINE system, the reextraction percentages were also 100% for both metals, using 6M HCl for gallium and 0.5M HCl for aluminium. On the other hand, the reextraction percentages for the system with SCO were as high as 84% for gallium and 92% for aluminium, with HCl in the same concentrations as those used in the AMINE system. Finally, an optimized system was applied in the gallium extraction process employing a reciprocating perforated-plates extractor. As a result, the metal content was extracted at a recovery rate of 95% for gallium and 97% for aluminium

Bayer hydrotalcites prepared using the seawater neutralisation (SWN) process of Bayer liquors are characterised using X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis techniques. The Bayer hydrotalcites are synthesised at four different temperatures (0, 25, 55, 75 °C) to determine the effect on the thermal stability of the hydrotalcite structure, and to identify other precipitates that form at these temperatures. The interlayer distance increased with increasing synthesis temperature, up to 55 °C, and then decreased by 0.14 Å for Bayer hydrotalcites prepared at 75 °C. The three mineralogical phases identified in this investigation are; 1) Bayer hydrotalcite, 2), calcium carbonate species, and 3) hydromagnesite. The DTG curve can be separated into four decomposition steps; 1) the removal of adsorbed water and free interlayer water in hydrotalcite (30 – 230 °C), 2) the dehydroxylation of hydrotalcite and the decarbonation of hydrotalcite (250 – 400 °C), 3) the decarbonation of hydromagnesite (400 – 550 °C), and 4) the decarbonation of aragonite (550 – 650 °C).

In February 2010, the Delhi High Court delivered its decision in Bayer Corp v Union of India in which Bayer had appealed against an August 2009 decision of the same court. Both decisions prevented Bayer from introducing the concept of patent linkage into India’s drug regulatory regime. Bayer appealed to the Indian Supreme Court, the highest court in India, which agreed on 2 March 2010 to hear the appeal. Given that India is regarded as a global pharmaceutical manufacturer of generic medications, how its judiciary and government perceive their international obligations has a significant impact on the global access to medicines regime. In rejecting the application of patent linkage, the case provides an opportunity for India to further acknowledge its international human rights obligations.

The seawater neutralisation process is currently used in the Alumina industry to reduce the pH and dissolved metal concentrations in bauxite refinery residues, through the precipitation of Mg, Al, and Ca hydroxide and carbonate minerals. This neutralisation method is very similar to the co-precipitation method used to synthesise hydrotalcite (Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3•4H2O). This study looks at the effect of temperature on the type of precipitates that form from the seawater neutralisation process of Bayer liquor. The Bayer precipitates have been characterised by a variety of techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The mineralogical composition of Bayer precipitates largely includes hydrotalcite, hydromagnesite, and calcium carbonate species. XRD determined that Bayer hydrotalcites that are synthesised at 55 °C have a larger interlayer distance, indicating more anions are removed from Bayer liquor. Vibrational spectroscopic techniques have identified an increase in hydrogen bond strength for precipitates formed at 55 °C, suggesting the formation of a more stable Bayer hydrotalcite. Raman spectroscopy identified the intercalation of sulfate and carbonate anions into Bayer hydrotalcites using these synthesis conditions.

Hydrotalcite and thermally activated hydrotalcites were examined for their potential as methods for the removal of oxalate anions from Bayer Process liquors. Hydrotalcite was prepared and characterised by a number of methods, including X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption analysis and vibrational spectroscopy. Thermally activated hydrotalcites were prepared by a low temperature method and characterised using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption analysis and vibrational spectroscopy. Oxalate intercalated hydrotalcite was prepared by two methods and analysed with X-ray diffraction and for the first time thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy and infrared emission spectroscopy. The adsorption of oxalate anions by hydrotalcite and thermally activated hydrotalcite was tested in a range of solutions using both batch and kinetic adsorption models.

Bauxite refinery residues (red mud) are derived from the Bayer process by the digestion of crushed bauxite in concentrated sodium hydroxide at elevated temperatures and pressures. This slurry residue, if untreated, is unsuitable for discharge directly into the environment and is usually stored in tailing dams. The liquid portion has the potential for discharge, but requires pre-treatment before this can occur. The seawater neutralisation treatment facilitates a significant reduction in pH and dissolved metal concentrations, through the precipitation of hydrotalcite-like compounds and some other Mg, Ca, and Al hydroxide and carbonate minerals. The hydrotalcite-like compounds, precipitated during seawater neutralisation, also remove a range of transition metals, oxy-anions and other anionic species through a combination of intercalation and adsorption reactions: smaller anions are intercalated into the hydrotalcite matrix, while larger molecules are adsorbed on the particle surfaces. A phenomenon known as ‘reversion’ can occur if the seawater neutralisation process is not properly controlled. Reversion causes an increase in the pH and dissolved impurity levels of the neutralised effluent, rendering it unsuitable for discharge. It is believed that slow dissolution of components of the red mud residue and compounds formed during the neutralisation process are responsible for reversion. This investigation looked at characterising natural hydrotalcite (Mg6Al2(OH)16(CO3)∙4H2O) and ‘Bayer’ hydrotalcite (synthesised using the seawater neutralisation process) using a variety of techniques including X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. This investigation showed that Bayer hydrotalcite is comprised of a mixture of 3:1 and 4:1 hydrotalcite structures and exhibited similar chemical characteristic to the 4:1 synthetic hydrotalcite. Hydrotalcite formed from the seawater neutralisation of Bauxite refinery residues has been found not to cause reversion. Other components in red mud were investigated to determine the cause of reversion and this investigation found three components that contributed to reversion: 1) tricalcium aluminate, 2) hydrocalumite and 3) calcium hydroxide. Increasing the amount of magnesium in the neutralisation process has been found to be successful in reducing reversion.

Factors that affect the settleability of seawater neutralised bauxite refinery residues are poorly understood, in particular, the settleability of precipitates in the absence of red mud and those formed with different alumina/caustic (AC) ratios. The influence of temperature, AC ratio, caustic concentration and the volumetric ratio of seawater on the settleability of seawater neutralisation precipitates and their respective compositions and stabilities have been determined. An array of techniques have been used to determine the composition and stability of precipitates and include pH, conductivity, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Temperature has been shown to have a significant influence on the settleability and calcium carbonate phase distributions in precipitates, as well as the overall stability of the precipitates. More complex phase compositions have also been found for Bayer liquors with lower AC ratios. The caustic concentration and temperature of the reaction have the greatest influence on the settling efficiency of the precipitates. Assessments on the chemical stability of the precipitates, precipitate settleability and discharge water quality have been made. In addition, productivity and environmental impacts caused by changes in precipitate settleability have also been considered.

La investigación se realizó en la finca Jalisco del municipio de Comalapa. Los objetivos fueron evaluar dos protocolos de sincronización celo en vacas lecheras. El trabajo consistió en la comparación de dos protocolos (DIB de syntex + Bay OvSynch Bayer) para la sincronización de vacas lecheras. Para el experimento se conformaron tres grupos de 12 vacas cada uno, con un periodo post-parto de 80±10 días, las cuales se examinaron por el método de palpación rectal para definir su estado ginecológico y ciclicidad, se definió el estado corporal por medio de la observación de la condición corporal (CC). Fecha de parto de acuerdo a los registro que lleva el productor y las variables a evaluar fueron las siguientes: (1)Tasa de Concepción (TC) (2) Porcentaje de Preñez a Primer Servicio (PPPS) (3)Porcentaje de Preñez a Segundo Servicio (PPSS) (4)Porcentaje de Preñez Acumulada Sincronización más Toro(PAST). así como el Análisis de Costo de los tratamientos. Los resultados derivados del análisis para el tratamiento 1 DIB syntex el porcentaje de preñez a primer servicio fue del 66.66 % y a segundo servicio fue del 50% para una preñez acumulada del 83.33%, con el tratamiento 2 Bay OvSynch Bayer el resultados de preñez a primer servicio fue del 50% y a segundo servicio fue del 50% con una preñez acumulada del 75%, el grupo testigo presento una efectividad del 25%. Se puede concluir que las vacas sometidas a estudio respondieron con éxito a los tratamientos hormonales exógenos pudiéndose obtener porcentajes de hasta 83.33% de éxito en la preñez. Lo que se traduce a una mayor rentabilidad del hato obteniendo un ternero cada año. Se recomienda el tratamiento DIB SYNTEX para la sincronización de celo en vacas lecheras pues se obtuvo buenos resultados 83.33% en las gestaciones acumuladas, Se debe tomar en cuenta el estado nutricional, la condición corporal y de igual manera la ciclicidad de los animales, pues se vuelve determinante para obtener buenos resultados en estos programas, sobre todo en el Bay Ovsynch que no tiene buenos resultados en vacas acíclicas o los resultados son muy bajos; a la vez recomiendo Realizar chequeo ginecológico periódico en las vacas que tienen peso y edad adecuados con el fin de realizar los tratamientos para evitar así preñeces tardías y mejorar los índices reproductivos del hato.

Lignosulphonates (LS) and fermentable sugars are the main components of spent sulphite liquors (SSL) produced in acid sulphite pulping. In spite of different methods have been used for spent liquor fractionation such as precipitation or vaporization; membrane technology allows the separation of these components from the SSL due to their different size molecular weight, offering great advantages with regards to the traditionally methods (less energy consumption, high selective separation, and many others). In the present study, ceramic membranes with different cut-offs (15 kDa, 5 kDa and 1 kDa) were used to achieve the sugar purification and the LS concentration. The membranes were evaluated according to their efficacy and efficiency properties. Different series system were tested in order to improve the aptitudes of a singular membrane. The system with the three membranes in series (15, 5 and 1 kDa respectively) obtained the most purified permeate stream, referred to the sugar content. Also, a characterisation of the LS contained in the different streams produced in this system was carried out in order to know in a more precise manner the valorisation potential of these components by means of biorefinery processes.
