Alienated Selfhood and Heroism: A Poststructuralist Reading of John le Carré’s Spy Fiction Novels

John le Carré’s novels “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” (1963), “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” (1974), and “The Tailor of Panama” (1997), focus on how the main characters reflect the somber reality of working in the British intelligence service. Through a broad post-structuralist analysis, I will identify the dichotomies - good/evil in “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” past/future in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” and institution/individual in “The Tailor of Panama” - that frame the role of the protagonists. Each character is defined by his ambiguity and swinging moral compass, transforming him into a hybrid creation of morality and adaptability during transitional time periods in history, mainly during the Cold War. Le Carré’s novels reject the notion of spies standing above a group being celebrated. Instead, he portrays spies as characters who trade off individualism and social belonging for a false sense of heroism, loneliness, and even death.

Altered expression of beta-galactosidase-1-like protein 3 (Glb1l3) in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-specific 65-kDa protein knockout mouse model of Leber's congenital amaurosis

Purpose: In this study, we investigated the expression of the gene encoding beta-galactosidase (Glb)-1-like protein 3 (Glb1l3), a member of the glycosyl hydrolase 35 family, during retinal degeneration in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-specific 65-kDa protein knockout (Rpe65(-/-)) mouse model of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA). Additionally, we assessed the expression of the other members of this protein family, including beta-galactosidase-1 (Glb1), beta-galactosidase-1-like (Glb1l), and beta-galactosidase-1-like protein 2 (Glb1l2).Methods: The structural features of Glb1l3 were assessed using bioinformatic tools. mRNA expression of Glb-related genes was investigated by oligonucleotide microarray, real-time PCR, and reverse transcription (RT) -PCR. The localized expression of Glb1l3 was assessed by combined in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry.Results: Glb1l3 was the only Glb-related member strongly downregulated in Rpe65(-/-) retinas before the onset and during progression of the disease. Glb1l3 mRNA was only expressed in the retinal layers and the RPE/choroid. The other Glb-related genes were ubiquitously expressed in different ocular tissues, including the cornea and lens. In the healthy retina, expression of Glb1l3 was strongly induced during postnatal retinal development; age-related increased expression persisted during adulthood and aging.Conclusions: These data highlight early-onset downregulation of Glb1l3 in Rpe65-related disease. They further indicate that impaired expression of Glb1l3 is mostly due to the absence of the chromophore 11-cis retinal, suggesting that Rpe65 deficiency may have many metabolic consequences in the underlying neuroretina.

Will the "fight" ever end? : a critical reading of the metaphors and discourses that construct HIV/AIDS in an African context

In this thesis, I critically examine the discourses that inform how we conceptualise HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa as they are produced in a sample of Canadian news articles, two nonfiction texts - Stephanie Nolen's 28 Stories of AIDS in Africa and Jonathan Morgan and the Bambanani Women's Group's Long Life ... Positive HIV Stories - as well as two literary texts - John Le Carre's popular fiction novel The Constant Gardener and an anthology of stories and poems from Southern Africa titled Nobody Ever Said AIDS, compiled and edited by Nobantu Rasebotsa, Meg Samuelson and Kylie Thomas. Paying particular attention to the role of metaphor in discursive formation, I have found that military metaphors, usually used in conjunction with biomedical discourses, continue to dominate what is said about HIV/AIDS. However, the use of military metaphors to conceptualise HIV/AIDS contributes to stigma and limits the effectiveness of responses to the pandemic. I argue that accessing alternative metaphors and discourses, such as biopsychosocial discourse, can lead to a more layered - and more beneficial - conceptualisation of HIV/AIDS, encouraging a more active response to the pandemic.

Le ms. franç. nouv. acq. 4018, sous le titre de : « Le courier du Roy en Orient », renferme un autre exemplaire, assez peu différent, de cette rédaction développée. — La relation intitulée : « Le François négotiant en Orient », annoncée dans l'épître au duc de Bourgogne et à la fin du « Premier voyage », est conservée dans le ms. de l'Arsenal 4070.

La prévision de l’inflation par la méthode des réseaux de neurones : Le cas de la Tunisie

L’approche neuronale a occupé l’intérêt d’un grand nombre de chercheurs pour l’analyse et la prévision des séries temporelles dans divers domaines. Dans ce papier, nous étudions la capacité des réseaux de neurones artificiels (RNA) de type « perceptrons multicouches » pour prévoir le taux d’inflation en Tunisie. Nous essayons de trouver une meilleure technique de prévision de l’inflation en comparant les résultats obtenus par les RNA par rapport à ceux fournis par les modèles autorégressifs linéaires (AR) et par le modèle de prévision « naïve ». La comparaison est effectuée sur la base du critère de la racine carrée de l’erreur quadratique moyenne (root-mean-square error : RMSE) et sur le taux d’amélioration de ce dernier (évalué par rapport à la marche aléatoire). Les résultats trouvés ont montré la supériorité des RNA qui permettent de mieux retracer l’évolution de la série et offrent une meilleure performance en termes de pouvoir prédictif du taux d’inflation en Tunisie.

Standing wave bed forms at Plage de la Grande Roche, le Verdelet, Pléneuf-Val-André, Cote d’Armor (France)

Coastal Photograph by Hubert Chanson This photograph of standing wave bed forms was taken at very low tide. The tidal range was 10 m. The bed forms were located on the island of Le Verdelet, in a channel between Le Grande Jaune and Le Verdelet. It is likely that these standing wave bed forms were formed during transcritical shallow water flows at the end of ebb tide. The author’s watch is in the foreground for scale.
