Nonprofit organisations and public policy : exploring the research role of the Brotherhood of St Laurence

This paper begins to explore the role of the Brotherhood of St Laurence as a nonprofit welfare organisation and its influence on public policy in Australia. The Brotherhood's impact on Australian social policy has been evident through a range of actions: the production of research on relevant social issues; the preparation of submissions and position papers and involvement in consultations with governments on social policy; and the personal influence of many of the charismatic (mostly) men who have led the organisation throughout its history. This paper highlights the Brotherhood’s research aspect and speculates upon the impact of its considerable research contribution. The Brotherhood has been involved in service delivery through a range of often innovative programs throughout its history, but the organisation's involvement in research and advocacy has rendered it unique in comparison to any other nonprofit welfare organisation in Australia. This paper finds that different kinds of research can be utilised in different ways; by studying the output of the Brotherhood it will explore and highlight how knowledge utilisation takes place. Um Novíssimo Testamento para o Século XXI: A Reescrita dos Evangelhos em Gore Vidal e José Saramago

Esta dissertação reflete sobre a forma como os dois romancistas intentam criar um quinto evangelho adaptado às contingências do século XXI, encarando Jesus numa perspetiva humana, para assim questionar a verdade totalizadora do dogma religioso e negar a existência de uma entidade superior, produto da imaginação humana. Numa tradição de crítica bíblica iniciada com os racionalistas e ampliada em tempos de pós-modernidade, estes romancistas utilizam estratégias discursivas que passam pelo uso da paródia e da metaficção, que colocam em plano de destaque a construção romanesca. Vidal opta por parodiar os atos dos apóstolos na tentativa de consolidação da Igreja primitiva, operando uma crítica ao capitalismo, à cultura mediática e ao mundo do entretenimento contemporâneos, assentes na aparência (material) e não na essência (espiritual). Para tal, desconstrói o momento culminante do cristianismo, a morte de Jesus no Calvário e reescreve os evangelhos através de meios tecnológicos, presentificando a figura de Jesus e colocando-o em paralelo com os intervenientes do conflito israelo-palestiniano. Por seu turno, Saramago propõe uma releitura sobre a vida e ações de Jesus à luz do Humanismo, esvaziando-o da sua divindade. Assim, apresenta Jesus como profeta radical na sua luta contra os ricos e os poderosos, com a missão de fazer cumprir a profecia que aponta para a vinda de um messias que colocaria Israel no caminho da abundância. O pecado é um dos temas centrais desta obra e o motor da ação. Este depende do exercício do livre-arbítrio, ameaça sempre constante na possibilidade de salvação eterna por parte do crente.

La multiculturalité, la communauté et les femmes non-conventionnelles dans The Diviners de Margaret Laurence et O Pioneers! de Willa Cather

Résumé Ce mémoire traite des enjeux multiculturels du tournant du vingtième siècle en Amérique du Nord, des problématiques de la communauté de face-à-face ainsi que de la non-conventionalité des protagonistes féminins présents dans The Diviners (1974) de Margaret Laurence et O Pioneers! (1913) de Willa Cather. Cette étude a pour objectif de faire des liens entre ces deux œuvres qui ont été écrites par des auteures féminines, qui mettent en scène des femmes fortes et émancipées dans des petites communautés multiculturelles de l’Ouest. Cette étude traitera également des différences entre les deux romans, soit l’époque et le contexte. Cette étude s’intéressera, en premier lieu, aux différents enjeux de la multiculturalité et analysera les deux romans à la lumière de concepts tels le Melting pot, l’assimilation et l’interculturalité. Cette étude s’intéressera ensuite aux problématiques de la communauté de face-à-face. Elle aura pour objectif de déconstruire l’idéal type de la communauté de face-à-face et de démontrer comment frictions et rejets font partie du quotidien des personnages des deux romans. En dernier lieu, cette étude s’intéressera à la non-conventionalité des personnages féminins principaux. En effet, chacune à leur manière, les protagonistes fracassent les stéréotypes féminins de leur milieu et de leur époque afin de s’émanciper.
