Utilizando imágenes foto-realistas se muestran a los dinosaurios no como exhibiciones de museo sino como seres vivos. El autor es una autoridad en dinosaurios reconocida mundialmente que trae a la vida una era gobernada por reptiles y otras criaturas. En la parte inferior de algunas páginas hay una línea cronológica para situar al dinosaurio en el tiempo en que vivió en la Era Mesozoica pero sólo ofrece una breve reseña de los diferentes períodos.

El conjunto de estrellas sobre el cielo forman imaginariamente dibujos que evocan figuras de animales, aves y peces: Escorpión, León, Ballena, Dragón, así hasta un total de diecinueve. Se completa con mapas e información sobre las estrellas.

Living in high-rise buildings could influence the health of residents. Previous studies focused on structural features of high-rise buildings or characteristics of their neighbourhoods, ignoring differences within buildings in socio-economic position or health outcomes. We examined mortality by floor of residence in the Swiss National Cohort, a longitudinal study based on the linkage of December 2000 census with mortality and emigration records 2001-2008. Analyses were based on 1.5 million people living in buildings with four or more floors and 142,390 deaths recorded during 11.4 million person-years of follow-up. Cox models were adjusted for age, sex, civil status, nationality, language, religion, education, professional status, type of household and crowding. The rent per m² increased with higher floors and the number of persons per room decreased. Mortality rates decreased with increasing floors: hazard ratios comparing the ground floor with the eighth floor and above were 1.22 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-1.28] for all causes, 1.40 (95% CI 1.11-1.77) for respiratory diseases, 1.35 (95% CI 1.22-1.49) for cardiovascular diseases and 1.22 (95% CI 0.99-1.50) for lung cancer, but 0.41 (95% CI 0.17-0.98) for suicide by jumping from a high place. There was no association with suicide by any means (hazard ratio 0.81; 95% CI 0.57-1.15). We conclude that in Switzerland all-cause and cause-specific mortality varies across floors of residence among people living in high-rise buildings. Gradients in mortality suggest that floor of residence captures residual socioeconomic stratification and is likely to be mediated by behavioural (e.g. physical activity), and environmental exposures, and access to a method of suicide.

Die Verwendung europäischer Architektursettings in japanischen "Trick"-Filmen (anime) ist mehr als die bloße Adaption einer – aus asiatischer Perspektive – exotischen Kulisse. Populäre Medien vertreten keine kritische Positionen; sie sind bemüht, an Vorstellungswelten und Seherfahrungen ihrer Betrachter anzuknüpfen. Auf diese Weise gelesen, sagen Kopien und bewusste (Re-)Kombinationen europäischer Motive im japanischen Film eine Menge über die Assoziationen, die asiatische Betrachter mit bestimmten Phasen europäischer Geschichte verbinden. Doch auch Eigengesetzlichkeiten des "Trick"-Films als Medium dürfen nicht vernachlässigt werden. Wenig bekannte Motive aus der expressionistischen Architektur können beispielsweise dazu eingesetzt werden, einen bloßen Verfremdungseffekt zu erzielen. In subtileren Beispielen kann der Umweg über europäische Kulissen aber auch dazu dienen, Spannungen der jüngeren Geschichte Japans in einem verfremdeten Gewand zu verarbeiten.

Animals can call on a multitude of sensory information to orient and navigate. In some cases they may calibrate these cues against each other to establish the most accurate information available. One such cue is the pattern of polarized light in the sky, which may be used as a geographical reference to calibrate other cues in the compass mechanism. Mammals, however, have not been shown to use this cue, even though they do calibrate a magnetic compass with sunset. In this paper we demonstrate that bats use polarization cues at sunset to calibrate a magnetic compass, subsequently used for orientation during a homing experiment. It is thus the only mammal known so far to make use of the polarization pattern in the sky. This is an intriguing finding as currently there is no clear understanding of how this cue is perceived in this taxon and has general implications for the sensory biology of mammalian vision.

For this project I prepared a series of recitals featuring music for horn and percussion, in which the horn part featured extended horn techniques. For this project, I considered anything beyond the open or muted horn an extended technique. These techniques range from the common hand-stopped note passages to complex new techniques involving half-valves, multi-phonics, and more, for new sounds desired by the composer. There are several pieces written for solo horn and percussion, with ensembles ranging from simple duets to solo horn with a full percussion ensemble. However, few include extended techniques for the horn. All of these select pieces are lesser known because of their difficulty, primarily because of the challenge of the extended techniques requested by the composer. In the introduction to this paper I give a brief background to the project, where the current repertoire stands, and my experiences with commissioning works for this genre. I then give a brief history and how-to on the more common extended techniques, which were found in almost every piece. I separated these techniques so that they could be referenced in the performance notes without being extremely repetitive in their description. Then follows the main performance notes of the repertoire chosen, which includes a brief description of the piece itself and a longer discussion for performers and composers who wish to learn more about these techniques. In this section my primary focus is the extended techniques used and I provide score samples with permission to further the education of the next musicians to tackle this genre. All works performed for this project were recorded and accompany this paper in the Digital Repository at the University of Maryland (DRUM). Due to the lack of repertoire, I successfully commissioned new pieces featuring extended techniques, which were featured in the final recital.
