Phase diagrams for the systems Ln2O3---H2O (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu and Y) studied at 5000 to 10,000 psi and temperature range of 200–900°C, show that Ln(OH)3 hexagonal and LnOOH monoclinic are the only stable phases from Nd to Ho. The cubic oxide phase (C---Ln2O3) is stable for systems of Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, with no evidence of its equilibrium in the systems of lighter lanthanides. Using strong acids, HNO3 and HCOOH, as mineralisers the cubic oxides could be stabilised from Eu down to Lu. Solid solution phases of CeO2---Y2O3 and Eu2O3---Y2O3 have also been synthesised with HNO3 as mineraliser, since these compounds have promising use as solid electrolyte and phosphor materials respectively.

Accurate electronic structures of the technologically important lanthanide/rare-earth sesquioxides (Ln2O3, with Ln=La, ⋯,Lu) and CeO2 have been calculated using hybrid density functionals HSE03, HSE06, and screened exchange (sX-LDA). We find that these density functional methods describe the strongly correlated Ln f electrons as well as the recent G0W0@LDA+U results, generally yielding the correct band gaps and trends across the Ln period. For HSE, the band gap between O 2p states and lanthanide 5d states is nearly independent of the lanthanide, while the minimum gap varies as filled or empty Ln 4f states come into this gap. sX-LDA predicts the unoccupied 4f levels at higher energies, which leads to a better agreement with experiments for Sm2O 3, Eu2O3, and Yb2O3. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Two series of lanthanide oxides with different morphologies were synthesized through calcinations of two types of citrate polymeric precursors. These oxides were characterized by XRD patterns, SEM electronic microscopy, and N(2) adsorption isotherms. SEM microscopy analysis showed that the calcination of crystalline fibrous precursors [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O] (L = citrate) originated fibrous shaped particles. On the other hand, the calcination of irregular shaped particles of precursors [LnL center dot xH(2)O] originated irregular shaped particles of oxide, pointing out a morphological template effect of precursors on the formation of the respective oxides.

Catalysis research underpins the science of modern chemical processing and fuel technologies. Catalysis is commercially one of the most important technologies in national economies. Solid state heterogeneous catalyst materials such as metal oxides and metal particles on ceramic oxide substrates are most common. They are typically used with commodity gases and liquid reactants. Selective oxidation catalysts of hydrocarbon feedstocks is the dominant process of converting them to key industrial chemicals, polymers and energy sources.[1] In the absence of a unique successfiil theory of heterogeneous catalysis, attempts are being made to correlate catalytic activity with some specific properties of the solid surface. Such correlations help to narrow down the search for a good catalyst for a given reaction. The heterogeneous catalytic performance of material depends on many factors such as [2] Crystal and surface structure of the catalyst. Thermodynamic stability of the catalyst and the reactant. Acid- base properties of the solid surface. Surface defect properties of the catalyst.Electronic and semiconducting properties and the band structure. Co-existence of dilferent types of ions or structures. Adsorption sites and adsorbed species such as oxygen.Preparation method of catalyst , surface area and nature of heat treatment. Molecular structure of the reactants. Many systematic investigations have been performed to correlate catalytic performances with the above mentioned properties. Many of these investigations remain isolated and further research is needed to bridge the gap in the present knowledge of the field.

The synthesis and characterization of lanthanide(III) citrates with stoichiometries 1:1 and 2:3; [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O], Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are reported. L stands for (C6O7H5)(3-) and LH for (C6O7H6)(2-). Infrared absorption spectra of both series evidence coordination of carboxylate groups through symmetric bridges or chelation. X-ray powder patterns show the amorphous character of [LnL center dot xH(2)O]. The compounds [Ln(2)LH(3)center dot 2H(2)O] are crystalline and isomorphous. Emission spectra of Eu compounds suggest C-2v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron of [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and C-4v for [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O]. Thermal analyses (TG-DTG-DTA) were carried out for both series. The thermal analysis patterns of the two series are quite different and both fit in a 4-step model of thermal decomposition, with lanthanide oxides as final products.

We report a method for estimating the positions of charge transfer (CT) bands in Eu3+-doped complex crystals. The environmental factor ( he) influencing the CT energy is presented. he consists of four chemical bond parameters: the covalency, the bond volume polarization, the presented charge of the ligand in the chemical bond, and the coordination number of the central ion. These parameters are calculated with the dielectric theory of complex crystals. The relationship between the experimental CT energies and calculated environmental factors was established by an empirical formula. The calculated values are in good agreement with the experimental results. Such a relationship was confirmed by detailed analysis. In addition, our method is also useful to predict the charge-transfer position of any other rare earth ion.

Isothermal sections of the phase diagrams for the systems Ln-Pd-O (Ln = lanthanide element) at 1223 K indicate the presence of two inter-oxide compounds Ln(4)PdO(7) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, three compounds Ln(4)PdO(7), Ln(2)PdO(4) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = Eu, Gd and only one compound of Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = Tb to Ho. The lattice parameters of the compounds Ln(4)PdO(7), Ln(2)PdO(4) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) show systematic nonlinear variation with atomic number. The unit cell volumes decrease with increasing atomic number. The standard Gibbs energies, enthalpies and entropies of formation of the ternary oxides from their component binary oxides (Ln(2)O(3) and PdO) have been measured recently using an advanced version of the solid-state electrochemical cell. The Gibbs energies and enthalpies of formation become less negative with increasing atomic number of Ln. For all the three compounds, the variation in Gibbs energy and enthalpy of formation with atomic number is markedly non-linear. The decrease in stability with atomic number is most pronounced for Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5), followed by Ln(4)PdO(7) and Ln(2)PdO(4). This is probably related to the repulsion between Pd2+ ions on the opposite phases Of O-8 cubes in Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5), and the presence of Ln-filled O-8 cubes that share three faces with each other in Ln4PdO7. The values for entropy of formation of all the ternary oxides from their component binary oxides are relatively small. Although the entropies of formation show some scatter, the average value for Ln = La, Pr, Nd is more negative than the average value for the other lanthanide elements. From this difference, an average value for the structure transformation entropy of Ln(2)O(3) from C-type to A-type is estimated as 0.87 J.mol(-1).K-1. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of these ternary oxides from elements at 1223 K are presented as a function of lanthanide atomic number. By invoking the Neumann-Kopp rule for heat capacity, thermodynamic properties of the inter-oxide compounds at 298.15 K are estimated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Five Ln(2)SrMCuO(6.5) oxides (M = Co, Ln = Y and Ho; M = Fe, Ln = Y, Ho, and Dy) were synthesized, and their crystal structures, IR spectra, and physical properties were studied. They have almost the same structure and crystallize in orthorhombic systems. Below room temperature, Y2SrFeCuO6.5, a known layered oxide, shows antiferromagnetic behavior, but the four new oxides are paramagnetic. Y2SrFeCuO6.5 fits the Curie-Weiss law in the temperature range 300-100 K, but Y2SrCoCuO6.5 shows complex magnetic behavior because of the disproportion of some Co+3 to Co+2 and Co+4 The five oxides are all p-type semiconductors in the measured temperature range and have large electrical resistivities at room temperature.

Four new polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of nicotinic acid N-oxide and isonicotinic acid N-oxide have been synthesized and structurally determined. In the isomorphous compounds [(Ln(L-1)(3) (H2O)(2))(n)]. 4nH(2)O(HL1 = nicotinic acid N-oxide; Ln = Eu, 1; Ln = Er, 2) the lanthanide(III) ions form infinite double chains along the b direction through the coordination of bridging carboxylate and N-oxide groups. The chains are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and uncoordinated N-oxide groups and between aqua ligands and lattice water molecules, to form a three-dimensional network. [(Eu(L-2)(2)-(H2O)(4))(n)](NO3)(n). nH(2)O (HL2 = isonicotinic acid N-oxide, 3) has a polymeric structure in which the europium (III) ions are connected into infinite chains by pairs of syn-syn carboxylate groups. Adjacent chains are interlinked by hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups to form a layer parallel to the (100) plane, and such layers are connected by hydrogen bonds between nitrate anions and aqua ligands, and between oxide groups and lattice water molecules, into a three-dimensional network. In [(Er-2(L-2)(4)(H2O)(10))](NO3)(2). H2O, 4, dinuclear units are inter-linked into a three-dimensional network through hydrogen bonding between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups of both bidentate bridging and unidentate L-2 ligands. Factors affecting the formation of coordination chains and dinuclear units are discussed. Luminescence properties of 1 and 3 have also been studied. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. We present the synthesis of AgLnMo(2)O(8) compounds with Ln = La-Nd and Sm. These compounds represent a scheelite-type structure characterized by MoO4- tetrahedrons. IR spectra show five absorption peaks in the region of 1000-400cm(-1), around 800cm(-1) and 400cm(-1), which correspond to the modes of the tetrahedral MoO42- groups. All of AgLnMo(2)O(8) (Ln = La-Nd and Sm) oxides are dielectric materials at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility ofAgLnMo(2)O(8) (Ln = Ce-Nd and Sm) shows Curie-Weiss law behavior from 100K to 300K. This indicates that both Ce and Pr exist in +3 oxidation state in AgLnMo(2)O(8). For AgLaMo2O8, diamagnetic properties are found as expected.
