[Excerpt] This book is about restoring the upward mobility of U.S. workers. Specifically it is about the one workforce-development strategy that is currently aimed at exactly that goal – the strategy of creating (or re-creating) not just jobs but also career ladders. Career-ladder strategies aim to devise explicit pathways of occupational advancement.

The experimental realization of various spin ladder systems has prompted their detailed theoretical investigations. Hen we study the evolution of ground-state magnetization with an external magnetic field for two different antiferromagnetic systems: a three-legged spin-1/2 ladder, and a two-legged spin-1/2 ladder with an additional diagonal interaction. The finite system density-matrix renormalization-group method is employed for numerical studies of the three-chain system, and an effective low-energy Hamiltonian is used in the limit of strong interchain coupling to study the two- and three-chain systems. The three-chain system has a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization. The two-chain system has a plateau at zero magnetization due to a gap above the singlet ground state. It also has a plateau at half of the saturation magnetization for a certain range of values of the couplings. We study the regions of transitions between plateaus numerically and analytically, and find that they are described, at first order in a strong-coupling expansion, by an XXZ spin-1/2 chain in a magnetic field; the second-order terms give corrections to the XXZ model, We also study numerically some low-temperature properties of the three-chain system, such as the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. The new bulky silicon-containing ditin precursor p-(RCl2SnCH2SiMe2)2C6H4 (R = CH2SiMe3 (4)) has been synthesized and further reacted to form a unique double ladder {[p-(R(Cl)SnCH2SiMe2)2C6H4]O}4 (6). The two layers within 6 are twisted with respect to one another, resulting in a helical motif and a total absence of molecular symmetry so that there are eight chiral tin atoms within the system. The structure is compared to the double ladder {[m-(R(Cl)SnCH2CH2)2C6H4]O}4 (11), which was prepared from the less sterically demanding ditin precursor m-(RCl2SnCH2CH2)2C6H4 (10). The two layers within 11 are parallel, and the molecule contains only two kinds of tin atom.

Preliminary results are described on the synthesis and characterization of novel spacer-bridged tetraorganodistannoxanes, {[[R(Cl)Sn]2(CH2)2]O}4 (n = 5 – 8, 10, 12; R = CH2SiMe3) containing particularly long organic spacers. In the solid state, these compounds reveal typical double-ladder structures with eight tin atoms per molecule, whereas in solution a partial and reversible rearrangement takes place to form tetraorganodistannoxanes, {[[R(Cl)Sn]2(CH2)n]O}2 (n = 5 – 8, 10, 12; R = CH2SiMe3), having four tin atoms per molecule.

The synthesis of the α,ω-bis[dichloro(trimethylsilylmethyl)stannyl]alkanes, (Me3SiCH2)C12Sn(CH2)nSnCl2(CH2SiMe3) (13, n=5; 14, n=6; 15, n=7; 16, n=8; 17, n=10; 18, n=12) and the corresponding oligomethylene-bridged diorganotin oxides [(Me3SiCH2)(O)Sn(CH2)nSn(O)(CH2SiMe3)]m (19, n=5; 20, n=6; 21, n=7; 22, n=8; 23, n=10; 24; n=12) is reported. The reaction of the diorganodichlorostannanes 13–18 with the corresponding diorganotin oxides 19–24 provided the spacer-bridged tetraorganodistannoxanes {[(Me3SiCH2)ClSn(CH2)nSnCl(CH2SiMe3)]O}4 (25, n=5; 26, n=6; 27, n=7; 28, n=8; 29, n=10; 30, n=12). Compounds 13–30 have been identified by elemental analyses and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Compounds 25, 27, 29 and 30 have also been characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and electrospray mass spectrometry. For the latter the essential double ladder motif is maintained for all n in the solid state, but subtle changes in alignment of the ladder planes occur. Separation between the two layers of the double ladder ranges from approx. 8.7  Å (for 25, n=5) to approx. 15 Å (for 30, n=12). In solution there is some dissociation of the double ladders into the corresponding dimers. The degree of dissociation is favoured by increasing oligomethylene chain length n.

We investigated the potential selective effect of fish ladders on physiological and morphological profiles of the curimbata, Prochilodus lineatus, during reproductive migration in Brazil. We registered sex, body weight and length, plasma glucose, hepatosomatic and gonadosomatic indices (HSI and GSI, respectively), hematocrit, leucocrit, blood cell and nucleus areas, and the diameter of white and red muscle fibers in fish sampled at the bottom (downstream) and at the top (upstream) of a fish ladder at a hydroelectric dam. Males and females at the top of the ladder showed higher size (weight and length), white muscle fiber diameters, plasma glucose levels and lower hematocrit when compared with those at the bottom. These size and muscle traits assist fish to overcome the ladder barrier and bypass the dam, an effort that might be reflected in the glucose levels. Females also showed higher GSI at the top of the fish ladder, a trait possibly facilitating their reproduction upstream. These results indicate that a dam system favors fish with specific morphological-physiological profile. This may have a strong influence upon upstream fish populations over generations and implies the presence of artificial selective pressure.

The dynamics of holon-doublon pairs is studied in Hubbard two-leg ladders using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. We find that the geometry of the two-leg ladder, which is qualitatively different from a one-dimensional chain due to the presence of a spin gap, strongly affects the propagation of a doublon-holon pair. Two distinct regimes are identified. For weak interleg coupling, the results are qualitatively similar to the case of the propagation previously reported in Hubbard chains, with only a renormalization of parameters. More interesting is the case of strong interleg coupling where substantial differences arise, particularly regarding the double occupancy and properties of the excitations such as the doublon speed. Our results suggest a connection between the presence of a spin gap and qualitative changes in the doublon speed, indicating a weak coupling between the doublon and the magnetic excitations.

Magnetic insulators have proven to be usable as quantum simulators for itinerant interacting quantum systems. In particular the compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 (for short: (Hpip)2CuBr4) was shown to be a remarkable realization of a Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid (TLL) and allowed us to quantitatively test the TLL theory. Substitution weakly disorders this class of compounds and thus allows us to use them to tackle questions pertaining to the effect of disorder in TLL as well, such as that of the formation of the Bose glass. In this paper we present, as a first step in this direction, a study of the properties of the related (Hpip)2CuCl4 compound. We determine the exchange couplings and compute the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat, using a finite temperature density matrix renormalization group procedure. Comparison with the measured specific heat at zero magnetic field confirms the exchange parameters and Hamiltonian for the (Hpip)2CuCl4 compound, giving the basis needed to begin studying the disorder effects.

Sets of RNA ladders can be synthesized by transcription of a bacteriophage-encoded RNA polymerase using 3′-deoxynucleotides as chain terminators. These ladders can be used for sequencing of DNA. Using a nicked form of phage SP6 RNA polymerase in this study substantially enhanced yields of transcriptional sequencing ladders. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) of chain-terminated RNA ladders allowed DNA sequence determination of up to 56 nt. It is also demonstrated that A→G and C→T variations in heterozygous and homozygous samples can be unambiguously identified by the mass spectrometric analysis. As a step towards single-tube sequencing reactions, α-thiotriphosphate nucleotide analogs were used to overcome problems caused by chain terminator-independent, premature termination and by the small mass difference between natural pyrimidine nucleotides.
