Thin-film analyses of silicate standards at 200 kv : the effect of temperature on element loss

Preliminary data is presented on a detailed statistical analysis of k-factor determination for a single class of minerals (amphiboles) which contain a wide range of element concentrations. These amphiboles are homogeneous, contain few (if any) subsolidus microstructures and can be readily prepared for thin film analysis. In previous studies, element loss during the period of irradiation has been assumed negligible for the determination of k-factors. Since this phenomena may be significant for certain mineral systems, we also report on the effect of temperature on k-factor determination for various elements using small probe sizes (approx.20 nm).

The modulus of elasticity of steel - is it 200 GPa?

In cold-formed steel construction, the use of a range of thin, high strength steels (0.35 mm thickness and 550 MPa yield stress) has increased significantly in recent times. A good knowledge of the basic mechanical properties of these steels is needed for a satisfactory use of them. In relation to the modulus of elasticity, the current practice is to assume it to be about 200 GPa for all steel grades. However, tensile tests of these steels have consistently shown that the modulus of elasticity varies with grade of steel and thickness. It was found that it increases to values as high as 240 GPa for smaller thicknesses and higher grades of steel. This paper discusses this topic, presents the tensile test results for a number of steel grades and thicknesses, and attempts to develop a relationship between modulus of elasticity, yield stress and thickness for the steel grades considered in this investigation.

Sources and composition of sub-200 nm sea spray aerosol inferred from volatility and hygroscopicity

Enrichment of marine organics in remote marine aerosols can influence their ability to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), which are sites for water vapour to condense into cloud droplets. This project identified the composition and hygroscopicity of sea spray aerosol (SSA) formed at the ocean surface due to bursting of entrained air bubbles. SSA from organically enriched waters in the southwest Pacific and Southern Oceans were investigated. Results indicate that current emission schemes may not adequately predict SSA CCN, influencing the representation of cloud formation in climate modelling.

In search of Gustav: The story of the Lilienfeld (later Lynfield) family covering the last 200 years 1800-1920

This is the first of three books about the history of Geoffrey Lynfield's family. It is about four Lilienfeld brothers--Geoffrey Lynfield's grandfather and his brothers. They were born in the Jewish enclave of Marburg and ended up in South Africa when and where the first diamonds were discovered. The manuscript also includes photographs and documents.

Egyptin kristillisten kirjureiden jäljillä : Tutkimus 100- ja 200-lukujen Uuden testamentin kanonisten ja apokryfisten käsikirjoitusten ulkoisista piirteistä

Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on tutkia kaikkein varhaisimpia Uuden testamentin kanonisia ja apokryfisia käsikirjoituksia sekä niiden kirjureita. Huomion keskipisteenä ovat kyseisten käsikirjoitusten ulkoiset piirteet, kuten esimerkiksi kirjoitusmateriaali, muoto, koko ja käsiala. Näiden avulla vertaan kanonisia käsikirjoituksia apokryfisiin ja pyrin selvittämään, erosivatko näiden kopiointimenetelmät toisistaan. Yksi keskeisimmistä kysymyksistä on se, voidaanko ulkoisten piirteiden avulla päätellä jotain käsikirjoitusten asemasta ja arvostuksesta. Tutkimuksen aluksi esittelen tutkimusaineistoni käsikirjoitukset ja tekstit. Päädyin vertaamaan kanonisia evankeliumeita kaikkiin 100- ja 200-luvuilta löydettyihin apokryfisiin käsikirjoituksiin, joihin sisältyy esimerkiksi Tuomaan ja Pietarin evankeliumit sekä Hermaan paimen. Kaikki tämän ajanjakson kristilliset käsikirjoitukset ovat löytyneet Egyptistä, minkä vuoksi tutkimukseni keskittyy Egyptiin ja sen kirjureihin. Ennen varsinaista käsikirjoitusten analyysiä käsittelen käsikirjoitusten löytöpaikkoja, kaanonin sekä antiikin kirjureiden historiaa. Ensimmäiseksi käsittelen käsikirjoitusten materiaalia, eli papyrusta ja pergamenttia. Tässä suhteessa kanoniset käsikirjoitukset eivät eroa apokryfisista, vaan aineistot ovat tämän suhteen identtisiä. Tämän jälkeen huomio kiinnittyy käsikirjoitusten muotoon, eli siihen kirjoitettiinko käsikirjoitukset koodeksiin vai kääröön. Analyysin edetessä paljastuu, että apokryfisissa käsikirjoituksissa käytettiin useammin käärömuoto kuin kanonisissa käsikirjoituksissa. Voidaan esittää, että kristityt kirjoittivat koodeksiin kaikkein arvostetuimmat tekstit, joten käärömuoto voi kertoa käsikirjoituksen sisältävän tekstin alemmasta arvostuksesta. Tutkimuksen seuraavissa osioissa käsitellään koodeksien kokoa, marginaaleja, palstoja sekä käsialan kokoa. Lukujen perusteella voidaan sanoa, että kanoniset koodeksit muodostavat hieman yhtenäisemmän linjan kuin apokryfiset koodeksit. Kanonisten koodeksien kirjureiden toimintatavat ovat siis olleet hieman yhtenäisempiä. Käsikirjoitusten käsialan tarkempi analyysi paljastaa kuitenkin, että niin kanoniset kuin apokryfiset käsikirjoitukset kirjoitettiin suhteellisen hyvällä käsialalla. Tutkimuksen viimeisessä luvussa käy ilmi, että apokryfisten koodeksien epäyhtenäisyys johtuu osittain niiden erilaisista käyttötarkoituksista. Apokryfisia koodekseja valmistettiin enemmän kristittyjen henkilökohtaiseen käyttöön verrattuna kanonisiin koodekseihin. Tästä huolimatta suurin osa käsikirjoituksista oli seurakuntien liturgisessa käytössä. Toisin sanoen niin kanonisia evankeliumeita kuin apokryfisia tekstejä luettiin ääneen seurakuntien kokoontumisissa, mikä kertoo niiden arvosta.

Liquid crystal based continuous phase retarder: From optically neutral to a quarter waveplate in 200 microseconds

Liquid crystal variable phase retarders have been incorporated into prototype devices for optical communications system applications, both as endless polarization controllers 1,2,3, and as holographic beam steerers 4. Nematic liquid crystals allow continuous control of the degree of retardation induced at relatively slow switching speeds, while ferroelectric liquid crystal based devices allow fast (sub millisecond) switching, but only between two bistable states. The flexoelectro-optic effect 5,6 in short-pitch chiral nematic liquid crystals allows both fast switching of the optic axis and continuous, electric field dependent control of the degree of rotation of the optic axis. A novel geometry for the flexoelectro-optic effect is presented here, in which the helical axis of the chiral nematic is perpendicular to the cell walls (grandjean texture) and the electric field is applied in the plane of the cell. This facilitates deflection of the optic axis of the uniaxial negatively birefringent material from lying along the direction of propagation to having some component in the polarization plane of the light. The device is therefore optically neutral at zero field for telecommunications wavelengths (1550nm), and allows a continuously variable degree of phase excursion to be induced, up to 2π/3 radians achieved so far in a 40μm thick cell. The retardation has been shown both to appear, on application of the field, and disappear on removal, at speeds of 100-500 μs. The direction of deflection of the optic axis is also dependent on the direction of the field, allowing the possibility, in a converging electrode "cartwheel cell", of endless rotation of the liquid crystal waveplate at a higher rate than achievable through dielectric coupling to plain nematic materials.

Efecto de diferentes láminas de riego por goteo y la aplicación fraccionada de 200 kg.ha-1 de nitrógeno, sobre el cultivo de maíz (Zea mays L.) en su rendimiento de chilote a una densidad de 125.000 ptas.ha-1

En la unidad experimental de la Universidad Nacional Agraria (U.N.A.) ubicada en el km 121⁄2 Carretera Norte. Se estableció el ensayo en época seca comprendido en el período durante los meses de (Marzo-Mayo) de 2012, que consistió en el estudio del Efecto de diferentes láminas de riego por goteo (al: 4.5;a2:3.6;a3: 2.5litros/m/día) y la aplicación fraccionada del nitrógeno (b1: 100 % a los 21 ddg;b2: 50 % a los 21 ddg y 50 % a los 42 ddg;b3: 100 % a los 42 ddg), sobre el cultivo del maíz (zea maysL.) en su rendimiento de chilote, con una variedad mejorada de Maíz NB-S a una densidad de 125,000 plantas. El ensayo se trabajó con un diseño bifactorial 3x3, utilizando un arreglo de parcelas divididas, en bloques completos al azar, con cuatro repeticiones y nueve tratamientos. Se trabajó con dos factores: A (Láminas riego /goteo) y B (Momentos de aplicación de la dosis a razón de 200 kg.ha-1 de N) recolectando los datos en la etapa de campo alos 14,35, 48 ddg y la cosecha a los 60 ddg. Las variables cuantitativas evaluadas en el estudio durante el crecimiento del cultivo fueron las características de: Altura de planta (cm),Diámetro del tallo (cm), Número de hojas por planta y para la Cosecha del chilote a los 60 ddg. Se midieron las variables: A altura de la primera y segunda inserción del chilote en (cm), Peso del chilote con brácteas y sin brácteas (gr), Longitud del chilote con brácteas y sin brácteas (cm), Diámetro del chilote con brácteas y sin brácteas(cm), Rendimiento del chilote (kg. ha-1) . Los datos recolectados se sometieron a un análisis estadístico y procesamiento de datos con el software InfoStat versión 2008, a consideración de la separación de medias por rangos múltiples de Duncan (α=0.05). Se realizaron los análisis económicos cumpliendo la metodología empleada por el CIMMYT (1988) de viabilidad y rentabilidad. El mejor en estudio de los nueve tratamientos evaluados, la interacciona 1 b2 (4.5 lt de agua/m/día; 200 kg. ha-1 de N aplicado (Urea) el 50 % de la dosis a los 21 ddg y 50 % a los 42 ddg.) indujo al mayor rendimiento de chilote con una producción de 2,229.16 kg. ha-1, con un total de costos variables de 4,458.00 C$.ha-1 y un beneficio neto de 14,266.94 córdobas por hectáreas y una tasa de retorno marginal de 1927,59%.

Numerical Study on Flow Field and Temperature Distribution in Growth Process of 200 mm Czochralski Silicon Crystals

The melt flow and temperature distribution in a 200 mm silicon Czochralski furnace with a cusp magnetic field was modeled and simulated by using a finite-volume based FLUTRAPP ( Fluid Flow and Transport Phenomena Program) code. The melt flow in the crucible was focused, which is a result of the competition of buoyancy, the centrifugal forces caused by the rotations of the crucible and crystal, the thermocapillary force on the free surfaces and the Lorentz force induced by the cusp magnetic field. The zonal method for radiative heat transfer was used in the growth chamber, which was confined by the crystal surface, melt surface, crucible, heat shield, and pull chamber. It was found that the cusp magnetic field could strength the dominant counter-rotating swirling flow cell in the crucible and reduce the flow oscillation and the pulling-rate fluctuation. The fluctuation of dopant and oxygen concentration in the growing crystal could thus be smoothed.

Deputados de todos os partidos reuniram-se para discutir o sistema de governo. O Deputado Amaury Muller (PDT-RS) declara estar convencido de que é a sociedade que deve discutir esta questão, de tal forma que ela própria possa definir sua posição. O Deputado Marcelo Cordeiro (PMDB-BA) afirma que é preciso um novo regime político que assegure a maior participação do povo e a fiscalização dos atos do governo e que esse sistema é o parlamentarismo. O Deputado Victor Faccioni (PDS-RS) considera que o sistema parlamentar de governo é a mudança mais fundamental da Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC). O Presidente do PMDB, Deputado Ulysses Guimarães reúne-se com o Presidente do PFL, o Senador Marco Marciel (PFL-PE) e demais líderes desses dois partidos. PFL e PMDB querem que a nova Constituição seja fruto do entendimento e o primeiro tema discutido foi o sistema de governo. Ulysses Guimarães (PMDB-SP) reconhece que há posições divergentes sobre o sistema de governo dentro dos próprios partidos e diz que é justo que se dê uma preferência para a decisão sobre esse assunto, na medida em que ele afeta toda a estrutura do projeto. Começam as Sessões Extraordinárias da Comissão de Sistematização para discutir as emendas populares. A primeira sessão contou com a participação de representantes da sociedade civil e a discussão girou em torno dos direitos da mulher, entre os quais o aborto foi o tema mais polêmico. A Deputada Abigail Feitosa (PMDB-BA) considera que o aborto deve ser matéria de lei ordinária. A Deputada Dirce Tutu Quadros (PTB-SP) defende que deva ser dado a mulher o direito de fazer ou não o aborto. Projeto de emenda popular, que concede aposentadoria às mulheres após 25 anos de serviço, ganhou o apoio do Relator da Constituição Bernardo Cabral e de muitos constituintes.
