A series of gemini surfactants based on cationic imidazolium ring as polar headgroup, abbreviated as lm-n-lm], 2Br(-) (n = 2, 5, 6 and 12), was synthesized. Their ability to stabilize silver nanoparticles in aqueous media was investigated. The resulting suspensions were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). They exhibit specific morphologies by adopting different supramolecular assemblies in aqueous media depending on the internal packing arrangements and on the number of spacer methylene units -(CH2)(n)-]. Individual colloids were extracted from the aqueous to chloroform layer and spread at the air/water interface to allow the formation of well-defined Langmuir films. By analysis of the surface pressure-area isotherms, the details about the packing behavior and orientation of the imidazolium gemini surfactant capped silver nanoparticles were obtained. Morphological features of the dynamic process of monolayer compression at the air-water interface were elucidated using Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). These monolayers were further transferred on mica sheets by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique at their associated collapse pressure and the morphology of these monolayers was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The number of spacer methylene units -(CH2)(n)-] of the gemini surfactants exerted critical influence in modulating the characteristics of the resulting Langmuir films. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. The interface between water and Langmuir films of long chain aliphatic molecules is investigated using accurate intermolecular potentials. The stabilities of various ice structures which could form at the interface are examined. Antiferroelectric ice is found to be the most stable, but this stability depends crucially on the first layer of water. Ferroelectric structures are found to collapse upon relaxation. Our model was not able to differentiate between the different nucleation properties of C31H63OH and C30H61OH. A better description of the alcohol–water interaction is probably required to account for this difference.

Understanding the behavior of petroleum films at the air/water interface is crucial for dealing with oil sticks and reducing the damages to the environment, which has normally been attempted with studies of Langmuir films made of fractions of petroleum. However, the properties of films from whole petroleum samples may differ considerably from those of individual fractions, Using surface pressure and surface potential measurements and Brewster angle and fluorescence microscopy, we show that petroleum forms it nonhomogeneous Langmuir film at the air-water interface. The surface pressure isotherms for petroleum Langmuir films exhibit gas (G), liquid-expanded (LE), and liquid-condensed phases, with almost no hysteresis in the compression-decompression cycles. Domains formed upon compression from the G to the LE phase were accompanied by an increase in fluorescence intensity with excitation at 400-440 nm owing to an increase in the surface density of the chromophores in the petroleum film. The surface pressure and the fluorescence microscopy data pointed to self-assembling domains into a pseudophase in thermo-dynamic equilibrium with other less emitting petroleum components. This hypothesis was supported by Brewster angle microscopy images, whereby the appearance of water domains even at high surface pressures confirms the tendency of petroleum to stabilize emulsion systems. The results presented here suggest that, for understanding the interaction with water, it may be more appropriate to use the whole petroleum samples rather than its fractions.

An increase of the reports involving mimetic systems has been observed. Briefly, these systems use biological phospholipids to exploit specific interactions between membrane-models and drugs. Here, the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) and Langmuir techniques were used to investigate the interaction between cardiolipin (CLP-negative phospholipid) and a cationic-like drug methylene blue (MB). Supported by a cationic polyelectrolyte (PAH), LbL films containing PAH/(CLP + MB) and PAH/(CLP + MB + AgNP) were grown up to 14 bilayers. The optical microscopy analysis revealed a decrease of the CLP vesicle sizes in the presence of MB as a possible consequence of the MB action onto the mechanical properties of the CLP membrane. From FTIR spectra, changes mainly related to peak position and band intensity and shape were observed in the spectra from PAH/CLP when in the presence of MB. The latter supports that the interactions between the phosphate and amine charged groups from CLP and PAH, respectively, established during the LbL film fabrication, besides the CLP hydrocarbon environment, are influenced by the presence of MB. Using the micro-Raman technique, a chemical mapping was build based on MB spectrum by resonance Raman scattering (RRS) and surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS). The later phenomenon was activated by Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) trapped within the LbL film allowing collecting spectra for a single bilayer of PAH/(CLP + MB + AgNP). A rough estimation showed a SERRS amplification of 10(3) in comparison to RRS spectra. As a complementary approach, Langmuir films of CLP in the presence of co-spread MB were investigated through surface pressure vs mean molecular area (pi-A) isotherms. The results showed that for concentrations of MB below 100 mol%, the drug is expelled to water subphase for high values of surface pressure (condensed phase). For concentration at 100% and higher, the MB keeps bound to CLP floating monolayer. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A soliton model for proton conductivity in Langmuir films is presented. The model contains three real scalar fields describing the hydrogen involved in the conduction, the hydrophilic head of the Langmuir film, and the water. Soliton solutions that describe proton motion along the hydrogen bonds are found. Under compression of the film, the distance between the minima of the proton potential and the strength of the hydrogen bonds between the film molecule and the water are changed. Such changes increase the probability of soliton creation. The model. presented allows proton conductivity data in Langmuir films to be explained. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V.

In this work, we investigate Langmuir monolayers froth an amide extracted from dried roots of Ottonia propinqua, a native Brazilian plant believed to exhibit anesthetic and hallucinogen activities. In addition to producing monolayers from the amide itself, we probe the molecular-level action of the amide on phospholipids employed as simple membrane models. The surface pressure-molecular area (pi-A) isotherms for the amide were little affected by a number of subphase conditions. Almost no changes were observed upon varying the compression speed, spreading volume onto the surface, ions in the subphase, ionic strength and the solution solvent. However, stronger effects occurred when the subphase temperature and pH were altered, as the isotherms were shifted to larger areas with increasing temperatures and decreasing pHs. These results are discussed in terms of the molecular packing adopted by the amide at the air-water interface. In the mixed films with arachidic acid, the area per molecule varied linearly with the concentration of amide, probably due to phase separation. on the other hand, in the mixed films with dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC), small amounts of the amide were sufficient to change the pi-A isotherms significantly. This points to a strong molecular-level interaction, probably between the phosphate group in the zwitterion of DPPC and the nitrogen from the amidic group. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. This study shows the incorporation of ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug, in Langmuir monolayers as cell membrane models. Significant effects were observed for dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC) monolayers with relevant changes in the elasticity of the monolayer. Dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG) monolayers were affected by small concentrations of ibuprofen, from 1 to 5 mol%. For both types of monolayer, ibuprofen could penetrate into the hydrophobic part of the monolayer, which was confirmed with polarization-modulated infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) images showed that ibuprofen prevents the formation of large domains of DPPC. The pharmacological action should occur primarily with penetration of ibuprofen via electrically neutral phospholipid headgroups of the membrane.

The luminescent ultrathin Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing Tb-2(C6H3S2O8)(2) (Tiron-Tb) were successfully obtained. The modifications of compression isotherms of dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODA) have been observed when the Tiron-Tb complex was dissolved in the subphase. The effect of Tiron-Tb in the subphase on Langmuir films of DODA has been studied. Low-angle X-ray diffraction result indicates that the LB films have a good periodic layered structure. The UV and IR spectra results show the Tiron-Tb complex is incorporated into LB films layer-by-layer and the LB films are homogeneously deposited. The LB films containing Tiron-Tb can emit strong green luminescence, and the luminescence signal can be detected from a single layer. The luminescence properties of LB films have been discussed compared with those of the solutions.

Three new amphiphilic rare earth complexes with only two organic long chains Ln (MOP)(2)Cl (MOP=monooctadecyl phthalate, Ln=Eu, Tb, Gd) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis. The complexes (Eu, Tb) showed good luminescence property with long fluorescence lifetime, whereas the intensity and lifetime of Tb complex are greater than those of Eu complex, By measuring the triplet energy levels of ligand based on energy transfer mechanism, above phenomena have been well explained. The Langmuir films of the complexes on the air/water interface were also studied and the results show that all of them have good film-forming property.

The use of natural substances in health applications may be hampered by the difficulties in establishing the mechanisms of action, especially at molecular-level. The protein-polysaccharide complex extracted from the mushroom Agaricus blazei Murill, referred to as CAb, has been considered for treating various diseases with probable interaction with cell membranes. In this study, we investigate the interaction between CAb and a cell membrane model represented by a Langmuir monolayer of dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid (DMPA). CAb affects the structural properties of DMPA monolayers causing expansion and increasing compressibility. In addition, interaction with DMPA polar heads led to neutralization of the electrical double layer, yielding a zero surface potential at large areas per molecule. CAb remained at the interface even at high surface pressures, which allowed transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films onto solid supports with the CAb-DMPA mixture. The mass transferred, according to quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements, increased linearly with the number of deposited layers. With UV-vis absorption, fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopies, we confirmed that the LB films contain polysaccharides, proteins and DMPA. Therefore, the CAb biological action must be attributed not only to polysaccharides but also to proteins in the complex. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We report on the formation of Langmuir films of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl) 21H,23H-porphine,hereafter named tetrapyridyl porphyrins with distinct central ions (2H(+), Zn(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+)). The films were characterized with surface pressure and surface potential isotherms and in situ UV-vis absorbance. The measurements indicated strong aggregation of porphyrin monomers at the air-water interface, with a red shift of the Soret band in comparison with the spectrum obtained from CHCl(3) solutions. The shift was larger for the non-substituted H(2)TPyP, and depended on the metal ion. Significantly, aggregation occurred right after spreading of the Langmuir film, with on further shifts in the UV-vis spectra upon compression of the film, or even after transferring them onto solid substrates in the form of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The buildup of LB films from H(2)TPyP and ZnTPyP was monitored with UV-vis spectroscopy, indicating an equal amount of material deposited in each deposition step. Using FTIR in the transmission and reflection modes, we inferred that the H(2)TPyP molecules exhibit no preferential orientation in the LB films, while for ZnTPyP there is preferential orientation, with the porphyrin molecules anchored to the substrate by the lateral pyridyl groups. Langmuir films have been fabricated from poly[(2-methoxy-5-n-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (OC1OC6-PPV). The stability and the area per monomer for condensed films indicate the formation of true monolayers with a very small extent of aggregation, which is unusual for polymer films. This is attributed to the linearity of the alkyl side chain. The Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films produced from Langmuir films of OC1OC6-PPV have distinctive features compared to those of cast films, probably due to the organization in the LB films whereas the molecules are randomly oriented in cast films. Infrared absorption spectra recorded for both transmission and reflection modes indicate that OC1OC6-PPV molecules are anchored to the substrate by the lateral groups. This is confirmed by the Raman spectrum, in which a distortion of the vinylene group was observed, and by surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) on an LB monolayer deposited onto Ag nanoparticles. The more homogeneous nature of the LB films in comparison with the case of cast films was demonstrated by optical microscopy and fluorescence measurements where the emission spectra were essentially the same for different regions of an LB film but showed dispersion in cast films. The LB films also displayed reversible photoconductivity.

The fabrication of supramolecular structures from the tetraruthenated porphyrin-containing phosphines, {TPyP[RuCl3(dppb)](4)}, RuTPyP, is demonstrated with Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films. The surface pressure-molecular area isotherms (pi-A) point to an edge-on arrangement for the RuTPyP molecules in the condensed state. Weak aggregation in the Langmuir films was indicated by non-zero surface potentials at large areas per molecule and a slight red shift in the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum in comparison to the spectrum in solution. Further aggregation occurs in the Z-type Lang muir-Blodgett films, which was confirmed with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy of the deposited films. Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopic data for powder and Langmuir-Blodgett films indicate that the RuTPyP molecules are chemically stable in Langmuir-Blodgett films regardless of the contact with water during film fabrication. The nanostructured nature of the Langmuir-Blodgett films was manifested in cyclic voltammetry due to the high sensitivity of the metallic centers in RuTPyR Electrodes modified with Langmuir-Blodgett films exhibit an anodic peak at 100 mV and a cathodic peak at 7 mV, which is assigned to RuIII/RuII redox processes. Furthermore, Langmuir-Blodgett films from RuTPyP showed electrocatalytic activity for oxidation of benzyl alcohol, illustrated by a large shift of 100 mV in the anodic peak at 400 mV, while electropolymerized and cast films of the same compound displayed smaller and no activities, respectively.

The synthesis of a poly(azo)urethane by fixing CO2 in bis-epoxide followed by a polymerization reaction with an azodiamine is presented. Since isocyanate is not used in the process, it is termed clean method and the polymers obtained are named NIPUs (non-isocyanate polyurethanes). Langmuir films were formed at the air-water interface and were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area per met unit (Pi-A) isotherms. The Langmuir monolayers were further studied by running stability tests and cycles of compression/expansion (possible hysteresis) and by varying the compression speed of the monolayer formation, the subphase temperature, and the solvents used to prepare the spreading polymer solutions. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was used to fabricate ultrathin films of a particular polymer (PAzoU). It is possible to grow homogeneous LB films of up to 15 layers as monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Higher number of layers can be deposited when PAzoU is mixed with stearic acid, producing mixed LB films. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy and Raman scattering showed that the materials do not interact chemically in the mixed LB films. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and micro-Raman technique (optical microscopy coupled to Raman spectrograph) revealed that mixed LB films present a phase separation distinguishable at micrometer or nanometer scale. Finally, mixed and neat LB films were successfully characterized using impedance spectroscopy at different temperatures, a property that may lead to future application as temperature sensors. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to correlate the data.
