A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

Polarization-insensitivity is achieved in a reflective spatial light modulator by laying a quarter-wave plate (QWP) at the incident wavelength directly over the mirror pixels of a silicon backplane, and forming a nematle Fréedrickcz cell over the QWP to modulate the reflected phase. To achieve the highest drive voltage from the available silicon process, a switched voltage common front electrode design is described, with variable amplitude square wave drive to the pixels to maintain constant root-mean-square drive and minimize phase fluctuations during the dc balance refresh cycle. The silicon has been fabricated and liquid-crystal-on-silicon cells both with and without the QWP assembled; applications include optically transparent switches for optical networks, beam steering for add-drop multiplexers for wavelength-division- multiplexing telecommunications, television multicast, and holographic projection.

An investigation on growth, production and fishery of three Indian major carps: rohu, Labeo rohita, catla, Catla catla and mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala and three exotic carps: silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and common carp, Cyprinus carpio was carried out in Nasti baor during February to April months. In catch per unit effort (CPUE) study the highest catch/day/person (3.13 kg) and catch/day/gear (40.65 kg) was recorded in the month of March for kochal fishing. In komar fishing catch/day/person (15.08 kg) and catch/day/gear (1206 kg) was also found higher in March. Komar fishing was done only in March and April and its CPUE was greater in both the months than that of kochal. The average recovery rate (combination of all six species) was 37.80 considering the stocking from July month of the previous year. The recovery rate of common carp (54.1) was the highest and lowest (13.90) in case of silver carp. When the recovery was calculated on the basis of one year data and stocking, it was 55.6%. Analysis of production model revealed that the present production (54,806 kg/year) is less than both theoretical production (model I- 85,285 kg/year and model II -75,952 kg/year) estimated. Therefore, it may be concluded that the fish production from Nasti baor could still be increased from the present level of production.

Estudiar los beneficios que, dentro de un contexto de terapia psicomotriz, puede aportar la estimulación vestibular a la estabilización y mejora de las capacidades motrices y comunicativas de niños con necesidades educativas especiales para acceder al currículum. Planteamiento de hipótesis. 5 alumnos y 1 alumna con edades entre 7 y 13 años de un colegio rural de educación especial, con afectación motriz de grado diverso y divididos en 2 subgrupos: experimental y de comparación. Grupo de control: 3 chicos y 1 chica entre 10 y 13 años, pertenecientes a un colegio público rural. 1.Se evaluan los rendimientos de los sujetos en 3 áreas, mediante las siguientes pruebas: a.Escalas de valoración de la comunicación y el lenguaje, para obtener los perfiles de niveles de comunicación: escala madurativa de comunicación/lenguaje; protocolo de conversación-imitación; prueba para la evaluación del lenguaje. b.Escalas de valoración de la conducta motriz general, aplicables a la obtención de los niveles de rendimiento motor. c.Prueba de las reacciones tónico-posturales antigravitacionales. Se utiliza la prueba de equilibrio sobre un pie, como desencadenante de comportamientos que exteriorizan habilidades de control postural. 2.Realización de un programa de estimulación psicomotriz terapéutica general y uno de estimulación vestibular-propioceptiva. Tablas, porcentajes. La estimulación psicomotora general (EPG) genera en todos los sujetos progresos globales relativos en sus rendimientos motores y comunicativos. La EPG junto a la estimulación vestíbulo-propioceptiva (EVP) genera mejores rendimientos globales relativos en los sujetos del grupo experimental respecto de los del grupo de comparación (quienes sólo recibieron EPG). La EVP asociada a la EPG conlleva un mejor control de las reacciones tónico-posturales antigravitacionales en el grupo experimental respecto del de comparación. En la prueba de equilibrio sobre un pie, tanto en los grupos de muestra como en el grupo de control, los esquemas de patrones posturales obtenidos pueden equipararse a los del esquema de base, surgido de la observación clínica previa. Se requiere una mayor y más completa investigación en este tema a fin de corroborar, o no, los resultados surgidos de los datos de este estudio piloto.

In an effort to detect West Nile virus (WNV) in Brazil, we sampled serum from horses and chickens from the Pantanal region of the state of Mato Grosso and tested for flavivirus-reactive antibodies by blocking ELISA. The positive samples were further confirmed for serological evidence of WNV infection in three (8%) of the 38 horses and one (3.2%) of the 31 chickens using an 80% plaque-reduction neutralisation test (PRNT80). These results provide evidence of the circulation of WNV in chickens and horses in Pantanal.

The aim of this work is to explore, within the framework of the presumably asymptotically safe Quantum Einstein Gravity, quantum corrections to black hole spacetimes, in particular in the case of rotating black holes. We have analysed this problem by exploiting the scale dependent Newton s constant implied by the renormalization group equation for the effective average action, and introducing an appropriate "cutoff identification" which relates the renormalization scale to the geometry of the spacetime manifold. We used these two ingredients in order to "renormalization group improve" the classical Kerr metric that describes the spacetime generated by a rotating black hole. We have focused our investigation on four basic subjects of black hole physics. The main results related to these topics can be summarized as follows. Concerning the critical surfaces, i.e. horizons and static limit surfaces, the improvement leads to a smooth deformation of the classical critical surfaces. Their number remains unchanged. In relation to the Penrose process for energy extraction from black holes, we have found that there exists a non-trivial correlation between regions of negative energy states in the phase space of rotating test particles and configurations of critical surfaces of the black hole. As for the vacuum energy-momentum tensor and the energy conditions we have shown that no model with "normal" matter, in the sense of matter fulfilling the usual energy conditions, can simulate the quantum fluctuations described by the improved Kerr spacetime that we have derived. Finally, in the context of black hole thermodynamics, we have performed calculations of the mass and angular momentum of the improved Kerr black hole, applying the standard Komar integrals. The results reflect the antiscreening character of the quantum fluctuations of the gravitational field. Furthermore we calculated approximations to the entropy and the temperature of the improved Kerr black hole to leading order in the angular momentum. More generally we have proven that the temperature can no longer be proportional to the surface gravity if an entropy-like state function is to exist.

Mesozooplankton is collected by vertical tows within the Black sea water body mass layer in the NE Aegean, using a WP-2 200 µm net equipped with a large non-filtering cod-end (10 l). Macrozooplankton organisms are removed using a 2000 µm net. A few unsorted animals (approximately 100) are placed inside several glass beaker of 250 ml filled with GF/F or 0.2 µm Nucleopore filtered seawater and with a 100 µm net placed 1 cm above the beaker bottom. Beakers are then placed in an incubator at natural light and maintaining the in situ temperature. After 1 hour pellets are separated from animals and placed in separated flasks and preserved with formalin. Pellets are counted and measured using an inverted microscope. Animals are scanned and counted using an image analysis system. Carbon- Specific faecal pellet production is calculated from a) faecal pellet production, b) individual carbon: Animals are scanned and their body area is measured using an image analysis system. Body volume is then calculated as an ellipsoid using the major and minor axis of an ellipse of same area as the body. Individual carbon is calculated from a carbon- total body volume of organisms (relationship obtained for the Mediterranean Sea by Alcaraz et al. (2003) divided by the total number of individuals scanned and c) faecal pellet carbon: Faecal pellet length and width is measured using an inverted microscope. Faecal pellet volume is calculated from length and width assuming cylindrical shape. Conversion of faecal pellet volume to carbon is done using values obtained in the Mediterranean from: a) faecal pellet density 1,29 g cm**3 (or pg µm**3) from Komar et al. (1981); b) faecal pellet DW/WW=0,23 from Elder and Fowler (1977) and c) faecal pellet C%DW=25,5 Marty et al. (1994).
