The biological species (biospecies) concept applies only to sexually reproducing species, which means that until sexual reproduction evolved, there were no biospecies. On the universal tree of life, biospecies concepts therefore apply only to a relatively small number of clades, notably plants and animals. I argue that it is useful to treat the various ways of being a species (species modes) as traits of clades. By extension from biospecies to the other concepts intended to capture the natural realities of what keeps taxa distinct, we can treat other modes as traits also, and so come to understand that the plurality of species concepts reflects the biological realities of monophyletic groups. We should expect that specialists in different organisms will tend to favour those concepts that best represent the intrinsic mechanisms that keep taxa distinct in their clades. I will address the question whether modes of reproduction such as asexual and sexual reproduction are natural classes, given that they are paraphyletic in most clades.

The Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network (NICRN) undertakes research in a range of medical fields, which have recently been expanded to include mental health. The NICRN is part of a UK-wide initiative to provide opportunities for patients and clinicians to participate in high-quality clinical research.This suite of leaflets provides both the public and clinical researchers with an introduction to the work of the NICRN. They provide an overview of the NICRN's goals and highlight what the network can offer to patients, carers and researchers. Each leaflet includes specific details on the NICRN's work in that area and reasons why clinical research plays such a vital role in improving the delivery of health and social care

Contiene hojas de trabajo estructuradas de tal forma, que desarrollan un enfoque sistemático en la investigación de la ciencia en la enseñanza primaria, especialmente, entre alumnos de siete a once años. Cumple con los planes de estudios nacionales de todo el Reino Unido. Estas hojas de trabajo, son fotocopiables y proporcionan treinta y ocho ideas, con objetivos de aprendizaje dirigidos a los niños, es decir, cada uno de ellos se centra en que éstos desarrollen una aptitud específica en cualquier aspecto de la ciencia.

Endophytic insects and their parasitoids provide valuable models for community ecology. The wasp communities in inflorescences of fig trees have great potential for comparative studies, but we must first describe individual communities. Here, we add to the few detailed studies of such communities by describing the one associated with Ficus rubiginosa in Australia. First, we describe community composition, using two different sampling procedures. Overall, we identified 14 species of non-pollinating fig wasp (NPFW) that fall into two size classes. Small wasps, including pollinators, gallers and their parasitoids, were more abundant than large wasps (both galler and parasitoid species). We show that in figs where wasps emerge naturally, the presence of large wasps may partly explain the low emergence of small wasps. During fig development, large gallers oviposit first, before and around the time of pollination, while parasitoids lay eggs after pollination. We further show that parasitoids in the subfamily Sycoryctinae, which comprise the majority of all individual NPFWs, segregate temporally by laying eggs at different stages of fig development. We discuss our results in terms of species co-existence and community structure and compare our findings to those from fig wasp communities on other continents.
