The growth of magnetron sputtered Co/Au and Pd/Co/Au superlattices on Au and Pd buffer layers, deposited onto glass substrates, has been monitored optically and magneto-optically in real time, using rotating analyser ellipsometry and Kerr polarimetry, at a wavelength of 633 nm. The magneto-optical traces, combined with ex situ and in situ hysteresis loops, provide a detailed and informative fingerprint of the optical and magnetic properties of the films as they evolve during growth. For Co/Au, oscillations in the polar magneto-optical effect developed during the deposition of An overlayers on Co and these may be attributed to quantum well states. However, the hysteresis measurements show that the magnetic field required to maintain saturation magnetization throughout the experiment was larger than available in situ, introducing a degree of confusion concerning the interpretation of the data. This problem was overcome by the incorporation of Pd layers into the Co/Au structure, thereby eliminating variation in magnetic orientation during growth of the Au layers as a contributory factor to the observations.

Spin dynamics in (Ga,Mn)As films grown on GaAs(001) was investigated by Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The Kerr signal decay time of (Ga,Mn)As without external magnetic field applied was found to be several hundreds picoseconds, which suggested that photogenerated polarized holes and magnetic ions are coupled as a ferromagnetic system. Nonmonotonic temperature dependence of relaxation and dephasing (R&D) time and Larmor frequency manifests that Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanism dominates the spin R&D time at low temperature, while D'yakonov-Perel mechanism dominates the spin R&D time at high temperature, and the crossover between the two regimes is Curie temperature.

The ultrafast dynamics of in-plane four-state magnetization reversal from compressively strained (Ga,Mn)As film was investigated by magneto-optical Kerr rotation measurement. The magnetization reversal signal was dramatically suppressed upon pumping, and recovered slowly with time evolution. The low switching field H-c1 increased abruptly from 30 to 108 G on the first several picoseconds and recovered back to the value before optical pumping within about 500 ps, whereas the high switching field H-c2 did not change obviously upon pumping, implying a domain-wall nucleation/propagation at low fields and coherent magnetization rotation at high fields in the magnetization reversal process.

In situ ellipsometry and Kerr polarimetry have been used to follow the continuous evolution of the optical and magneto- optical properties of multiple layers of Co and Pd during their growth. Films were sputter deposited onto a Pd buffer layer on glass substrates up to a maximum of N = 10 bi-layer periods according to the scheme glass/Pd(10)Ar x (0.3Co/3Pd) (nm). Magnetic hysteresis measurements taken during the deposition consistently showed strong perpendicular anisotropy at all stages of film growth following the deposition of a single monolayer of Co. Magneto-optic signals associated with the normal-incidence polar Kerr effect indicated strong polarization of Pd atoms at both Co-Pd and Pd-Co interfaces and that the magnitude of the complex magneto-optic Voigt parameter and the magnetic moment of the Pd decrease exponentially with distance from the interface with a decay constant of 1.1 nm(- 1). Theoretical simulations have provided an understanding of the observations and allow the determination of the ultrathin- film values of the elements of the skew-symmetric permittivity tensor that describe the optical and magneto-optical properties for both CO and Pd. Detailed structure in the observed Kerr ellipticity shows distinct Pd-thickness-dependent oscillations with a spatial period of about 1.6 nm that are believed to be associated with quantum well levels in the growing Pd layer.

In this work, we investigated the magnetic properties of a monocrystalline Fe thin film and of Fe(80 Å)/Cr(t)/Fe(80 Å) tri-layers, with the nonmagnetic metallic Cr spacer layer thickness varying between 9 Å < t < 40 Å. The samples were deposited by the DC Sputtering on Magnesium Oxide (MgO) substrates, with (100) crystal orientation. For this investigation, experimental magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) techniques were employeed. In this case, these techniques allowed us to study the static and dynamical magnetization properties of our tri-layers. The experimental results were interpreted based on the phenomenological model that takes into account the relevant energy terms to the magnetic free energy to describe the system behavior. In the case of the monocrystalline Fe film, we performed an analytical discussion on the magnetization curves and developed a numerical simulation based on the Stoner-Wohlfarth model, that enables the numerical adjustment of the experimental magnetization curves and obtainment of the anisotropy field values. On the other hand, for the tri-layers, we analyzed the existence of bilinear and biquadratic couplings between the magnetizations of adjacent ferromagnetic layers from measurements of magnetization curves. With the FMR fields and line width angular dependencies, information on the anisotropy in three layers was obtained and the effects of different magnetic relaxation mechanisms were evidenced. It was also possible to observe the dependence of the epitaxy of the multilayers with growth and sputtering parameters. Additionally it was developed the technique of AC magnetic susceptibility in order to obtain further information during the investigation of magnetic thin films

n this master s dissertation a Kerr Magneto Optic s magnetometer effect was set up to do characterization of samples type films fine and ultra thin, these samples will be grown after the implementation of the sputtering technique at the magnetism laboratory of of this department. In this work a cooled electromagnet was also built the water and that it reaches close values to 10kOe with a gap of 22 mm including an area of uniform field of 25mm of diameter. The first chapter treats of the construction of this electromagnet from its dimensioning to the operation tests that involve measures of reached maximum field and temperature of the reels when operated during one hour. The second chapter is dedicated to the revision of the magnetism and the magnetization processes as well as it presents a theoretical base regarding the magnetic energies found in films and magnetic multilayer. In the sequence, the third chapter, is especially dedicated the description of the effects magneto opticians the effect kerr in the longitudinal, traverse and polar configurations, using for so much only the classic approach of the electromagnetism and the coefficients of Fresnel. Distinguished the two areas of observation of the effect regarding thickness of the film. The constructive aspects of the experimental apparatus as well as the details of its operation are explained at the room surrender, also presenting the preliminary results of the measures made in one serializes of permalloy films and concluding with the results of the characterization of the first films of iron and permalloy grown here at the theoretical and experimental physics department at UFRN

In the present paper the magneto-optical Franz-Keldysh effect is predicted to occur in graphene. Explicit expressions for the energies of Landau-level excitations in a graphene monolayer in the presence of a high quantizing magnetic field and driven by an intense electromagnetic radiation are derived. The combination of both fields favors the electromagnetic blueshifts and redshifts of the Landau level and in addition, magneto-optical electron transitions between sublevels in the system can take place.

WE have designed a dual-beam magneto-optical (MO) storage system to test the dynamic storage properties of MO disks. The characteristics of this dual-beam system are demonstrated. Magnetic field modulated direct overwrite, which is a promising technique for highspeed MO storage, is realized on TbFeCo MO disks with this dual-beam MO system. The effect of light intensity, magnetic field intensity, and linear velocity of the disk and the modulating frequency variation on carrier-to-noise ratio is investigated. The conventional TbFeCo magneto-optical (MO) medium has a relatively smaller Kerr rotation angle in the blue region than in the red. With the recording wavelength gradually moving to the short wavelength, if TbFeCo is still used as recording medium, the conventional MO disk structure must be optimized to get a larger carrier to noise ratio (CNR). Sabi et al. have found that adding a metal layer attached to the TbFeCo film as thermal control layer is a useful way to get a high CNR. In this paper, we proved this through calculation, and carried out optimization of the new type of disk. Calculation results showed that the new structure is useful in preventing an excessive temperature increase, and has a better thermal response. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ferrofluids belonging to the series NixFe1 xFe2O4 were synthesised by two different procedures—one by standard co-precipitation techniques, the other by co-precipitation for synthesis of particles and dispersion aided by high-energy ball milling with a view to understand the effect of strain and size anisotropy on the magneto-optical properties of ferrofluids. The birefringence measurements were carried out using a standard ellipsometer. The birefringence signal obtained for chemically synthesised samples was satisfactorily fitted to the standard second Langevin function. The ball-milled ferrofluids showed a deviation and their birefringence was enhanced by an order. This large enhancement in the birefringence value cannot be attributed to the increase in grain size of the samples, considering that the grain sizes of sample synthesised by both modes are comparable; instead, it can be attributed to the lattice strain-induced shape anisotropy(oblation) arising from the high-energy ball-milling process. Thus magnetic-optical (MO) signals can be tuned by ball-milling process, which can find potential applications.

A study of the magneto-optical (MO) spectral response of Co nanoparticles embedded in MgO as a function of their size and concentration in the spectral range from 1.4 to 4.3 eV is presented. The nanoparticle layers were obtained by sputtering at different deposition temperatures. Transmission electron microscopy measurements show that the nanoparticles have a complex structure which consists of a crystalline core having a hexagonal close-packed structure and an amorphous crust. Using an effective-medium approximation we have obtained the MO constants of the Co nanoparticles. These MO constants are different from those of continuous Co layers and depend on the size of the crystalline core. We associate these changes with the size effect of the intraband contribution to the MO constants, related to a reduction of the relaxation time of the electrons into the nanoparticles.

We report magnetic and magneto-optical measurements of two Mn12 single-molecule magnet derivatives isolated in organic glasses. Field-dependent magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) intensity curves (hysteresis cycles) are found to be essentially identical to superconducting quantum interference device magnetization results and provide experimental evidence for the potential of the optical technique for magnetic characterization. Optical observation of magnetic tunneling has been achieved by studying the decay of the MCD signal at weak applied magnetic field

In this paper, we report the measurement of Rb(2) molecule formation rate constant due to a two body process in a magneto-optical trap as a function of the sample temperature. The ground state molecules are detected by two-photon ionization, through the intermediate a(3)Sigma(+)(u) -> 2(3)Pi(g) molecular band. Our results show that the Rb(2) molecules formed in the MOT could be due to a wave shape resonance, which enhances the molecule formation rate. This effect may be used to enhance the molecule production; and therefore it maybe important to future experiments involving production and trapping of cold ground state molecules.

The magneto-optical rotation at room temperature was measured for three Ga:S:La:O chalcogenide glasses at several laser lines in the visible. The first sample was a binary system constituted by 70 mol % Ga2S3 and 30 mol % La2O3, whereas in the second and third ones the lanthanum oxide was partially substituted by lanthanum sulfide, keeping the amount of gallium sulfide fixed. A pulsed magnetic field between 50 and 80 kG was used for the Faraday rotation measurements. The Verdet constant for one of the ternary samples was found to be as high as 0.205 min G(-1) cm(-1) at 543 nm, indicating that these chalcogenide glasses are very promising for magneto-optical applications. The data for each sample were fitted using the expected analytical expression for the magneto-optical dispersion. Measurements of the refractive index of the glasses at 632.8 nm are also reported. Data on the magneto-optical properties of two high Verdet constant, heavy-metal oxide diamagnetic glasses are also included for comparison.
