Bodies of Ding kiln white porcelains and their imitations from Guantai and Jiexiu kilns of the Chinese Song dynasty (960-1279 AD) were analysed for 40 trace elements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Numerous trace element compositions and ratios allow these visually similar products to be distinguished, and a Ding-style shard of uncertain origin is identified as a likely genuine Ding product. In Jiexiu kiln, Ding-style products have trace element features distinctive from blackwares of an inferior quality intended for the lower end market. Based on geochemical behaviour of these trace elements, we propose that geochemically distinctive raw materials were used for Ding-style products of a higher quality, which possibly also underwent purification by levigation prior to use. Capable of analysing over 40 elements with a typical long term precision of < 2%, this high precision ICP-MS method proves to be very powerful for grouping and characterising archaeological ceramics. Combined with geochemical interpretation, it can provide insights into the raw materials and techniques used by ancient potters. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Remote engineering (also known as online engineering) may be defined as a combination of control engineering and telematics. In this area, specific activities require computacional skills in order to develop projects where electrical devives are monitored and / or controlled, in an intercative way, through a distributed network (e.g. Intranet or Internet). In our specific case, we will be dealing with an industrial plant. Within the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of activities related to remote engineering, which may be connected to the phenomenon of the large extension experienced by the Internet (e.g. bandwith, number of users, development tools, etc.). This increase opens new and future possibilities to the implementation of advance teleworking (or e-working) positions. In this paper we present the architecture for a remote application, accessible through the Internet, able to monitor and control a roller hearth kiln, used in a ceramics industry for firing materials. The proposed architecture is based on a micro web server, whose main function is to monitor and control the firing process, by reading the data from a series of temperature sensors and by controlling a series of electronic valves and servo motors. This solution is also intended to be a low-cost alternative to other potential solutions. The temperature readings are obtained through K-type thermopairs and the gas flow is controlled through electrovalves. As the firing process should not be stopped before its complete end, the system is equipped with a safety device for that specific purpose. For better understanding the system to be automated and its operation we decided to develop a scale model (100:1) and experiment on it the devised solution, based on a Micro Web Server.

Reaaliaikainen, ennakoiva kunnonvalvonta on erittäin tärkeä osa modernin tehtaan tai tuotantolinjan toimintaa. Diplomityön teettäjä haluaa edelleen kehittää akustiseen emissioon perustuvaa kunnonvalvonta järjestelmäänsä, jotta siitä olisi enemmän hyötyä asiakkaalle. Diplomityö sisältää johdannonakustiseen emissioon ja akustisiin emissio sensoreihin. Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää päätöksentekojärjestelmä, jota käytettäisiin työn teettäjän valmistamien sensoreiden antaman tiedon automatisoituun analysointiin. Työssä on vertailtu kolmea eri ohjelmistotoimittajaa ja heidän ohjelmiaan, ja tehty ehdotus hankittavasta ohjelmistosta. Lisäksi työssä on kehitetty ohjeita, joiden avulla ohjelmisto ohjelmoidaan tuottamaan reaaliaikaista tietoa ja huolto-ohjeita sen käyttäjille. Lisäksi työssä annetaan ehdotuksia kunnonvalvonta- ja päätöksentekojärjestelmän edelleen kehittämiseen.

The formation of reference groups comprises an important procedure in chemical provenance studies of archaeological pottery. Material from ancient kilns is thought to be especially suitable for reference groups, as it comprises a definite unit of past production. Pottery from the Late Minoan IA kiln excavated at Kommos, Crete was analysed in order to produce a reference group in this important area of Minoan ceramic production. The samples were characterized by a combination of techniques providing information on the chemistry, mineralogy and microstructure of the ceramic body. Initially, the study was unable to establish, in a straightforward manner, a chemical reference group. Different ceramic pastes and a range of selective alterations and contaminations, affected by variable firing temperatures and burial environment, were shown to be responsible for the compositional variability. Procedures are described to compensate for such alterations and the perturbations in the data that they produce.

It is important to develop drying technologies for Eucalyptus grandis lumber, which is one of the most planted species of this genus in Brazil and plays an important role as raw material for the wood industry. The general aim of this work was to assess the conventional kiln drying of juvenile wood of three clones of Eucalyptus grandis. The specific aims were to compare the behavior between: i) drying defects indicated by tests with wood specimens and conventional kiln-dried boards; and ii) physical properties and the drying quality. Five 11-year-old trees of each clone were felled, and only flatsawn boards of the first log were used. Basic density and total shrinkage were determined, and the drying test with wood specimens at 100 °C was carried out. Kiln drying of boards was performed, and initial and final moisture content, moisture gradient in thickness, drying stresses and drying defects were assessed. The defect scoring method was used to verify the behavior between the defects detected by specimen testing and the defects detected in kiln-dried boards. As main results, the drying schedule was too severe for the wood, resulting in a high level of boards with defects. The behavior between the defects in the drying test with specimens and the defects of kiln-dried boards was different, there was no correspondence, according to the defect scoring method.

Different nitrogen oxide removal technologies for rotary lime kiln are studied in this thesis, the main focus being in commercial technologies. Post-combustion methods are investigated in more detail as potential possible NOx removal with combustion methods in rotary lime kiln is more limited or primary methods are already in use. However, secondary methods as NOx scrubber, SNCR or SCR technologies are not listed as the Best Available Technologies defined by European Union. BAT technologies for NOx removal in lime kiln are (1) Optimised combustion and combustion control, (2) Good mixing of fuel and air, (3) Low-NOx burner and (4) Fuel selection/low-N fuel. SNCR method is the most suitable technique for NOx removal in lime kiln when NOx removal from 50 % to 70 % is required in case primary methods are already in use or cannot be applied. In higher removal cases ammonia slip is an issue in SNCR. By using SCR better NOx reduction can be achieved but issues with catalyst materials are expected to arise because of the dust and sulphur dioxide which leads to catalyst poison formation in lower flue gas temperatures. NOx scrubbing has potential when simultaneous NOx and SO2 removal is required. The challenge is that NO cannot be scrubbed directly, but once it is oxidized to NO2 or further scrubbing can be performed as the solubility of NO2 is higher. Commercial installations have not been made regarding SNCR, SCR or NOx scrubbing regarding rotary lime kiln. For SNCR and SCR the closest references come from cement industry.

The feasibility of carbon sequestration in cement kiln dust (CKD) was investigated in a series of batch and column experiments conducted under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. The significance of this work is the demonstration that alkaline wastes, such as CKD, are highly reactive with carbon dioxide (CO2). In the presence of water, CKD can sequester greater than 80% of its theoretical capacity for carbon without any amendments or modifications to the waste. Other mineral carbonation technologies for carbon sequestration rely on the use of mined mineral feedstocks as the source of oxides. The mining, pre-processing and reaction conditions needed to create favorable carbonation kinetics all require significant additions of energy to the system. Therefore, their actual net reduction in CO2 is uncertain. Many suitable alkaline wastes are produced at sites that also generate significant quantities of CO2. While independently, the reduction in CO2 emissions from mineral carbonation in CKD is small (~13% of process related emissions), when this technology is applied to similar wastes of other industries, the collective net reduction in emissions may be significant. The technical investigations presented in this dissertation progress from proof of feasibility through examination of the extent of sequestration in core samples taken from an aged CKD waste pile, to more fundamental batch and microscopy studies which analyze the rates and mechanisms controlling mineral carbonation reactions in a variety of fresh CKD types. Finally, the scale of the system was increased to assess the sequestration efficiency under more pilot or field-scale conditions and to clarify the importance of particle-scale processes under more dynamic (flowing gas) conditions. A comprehensive set of material characterization methods, including thermal analysis, Xray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence, were used to confirm extents of carbonation and to better elucidate those compositional factors controlling the reactions. The results of these studies show that the rate of carbonation in CKD is controlled by the extent of carbonation. With increased degrees of conversion, particle-scale processes such as intraparticle diffusion and CaCO3 micropore precipitation patterns begin to limit the rate and possibly the extent of the reactions. Rates may also be influenced by the nature of the oxides participating in the reaction, slowing when the free or unbound oxides are consumed and reaction conditions shift towards the consumption of less reactive Ca species. While microscale processes and composition affects appear to be important at later times, the overall degrees of carbonation observed in the wastes were significant (> 80%), a majority of which occurs within the first 2 days of reaction. Under the operational conditions applied in this study, the degree of carbonation in CKD achieved in column-scale systems was comparable to those observed under ideal batch conditions. In addition, the similarity in sequestration performance among several different CKD waste types indicates that, aside from available oxide content, no compositional factors significantly hinder the ability of the waste to sequester CO2.

Due to their relatively high calcium oxide content, industrial mineral oxide wastes are potential candidates for mineral sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Cement kiln dust (CKD), a byproduct of cement manufacturing contains 20-60% CaO making it a possible candidate for CO2 sequestration. In this study, three types of CKD are characterized, before and after carbonation, using environmental scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis to determine the mineralogical and morphological changes occurring due to carbonation. The reactants, products, and precipitation mechanisms were investigated to enhance understanding of the governing processes and allow better utilization of CKD for CO2 sequestration. The results of multiple independent analyses confirmed the formation of CaCO3 during carbonation. Examinations of the reaction pathways found that CaO and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) were the major reactants. Three types of CaCO3 precipitation mechanisms were observed: (1) diffusion of CO2 into Ca(OH)2 particles causing precipitation in the pores of the particle and the growth of a CaCO3 ring from the outside inward, (2) precipitation onto existing particles, and (3) precipitation from aqueous solution. The growth of a CaCO3 ring on the outside of a particle may slow further diffusion of CO2 into a particle slowing iv the overall sequestration rate. Additionally, changes caused by carbonation in the solubility of trace metals were studied by mixing pre- and post-carbonated CKD with water and analyzing the solution using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Decreases in the leaching of chromium, lead, and copper were observed, and is an incentive for use of CKD for CO2 sequestration. Equilibrium modeling using PHREEQC confirmed that CaO and Ca(OH)2 would carbonate readily and form CaCO3.
